Chapter 1

I was in a relationship with Quinn Lucas for five years and thought I had touched her with my sincerity. That night, I got a phone call from her when I was preparing to propose to her. "Kyle, come to the hotel." Then, she sent me the address. When I arrived, she told me to buy contraceptives from the supermarket next door. I thought we were close to our happily ever after, so I was excited. When I knocked on the door of her room again, I saw a man, who took the contraceptives in my hand and thanked me. I froze in place...

Quinn Lucas and I were in a relationship for five years, and life was exceptionally tough for us during these five years. We lived in a basement and survived on countless meals bought from roadside stalls. Despite all the hardships she endured while with me, she never complained. She said she would be happy as long as I was around. We were happy back then. Life felt like a fairytale.

I stayed by her side as she started as an entry-level employee and quickly became the president of the family company. She told me she would not have become the president without my silent support. Those words made me teary-eyed, as she recognized my efforts.

I did not even tell her that sheer hard work alone during these five years was not enough for her to secure the president position. She needed connections more than that. Every time she successfully landed an important contract, it was because I pulled some strings. However, I never told her this as I felt that telling her the truth would be disrespectful.

I thought I should remain an ordinary man from her perspective. She was used to it, and I was also used to it. Therefore, I silently protected her and took on all the housework. I even hand-washed her stockings, lingerie, and high heels one by one. I did everything to support her career and to be the unsung man behind her success.

She never even stepped into the kitchen. She wanted me to propose to her on the fifth anniversary of our relationship and said that she would marry me without hesitation. Her request filled me with motivation, and I had always kept it in mind.

Tomorrow will be our fifth anniversary. I had already prepared the engagement ring in advance. I had waited five years for this moment.

Quinn and I were about to get our happily ever after. The fact that a company president like her did not look down on me moved me. It was already late when Quinn got home. My heart was filled with excitement because this was the moment I would propose to her. The ring in my hand felt like it was burning—just like the passion I felt.

I said, "Why are you home so late? Let me warm up the food for you."

Quinn replied, "You don't need to do that. I'm exhausted from working overtime today. I'm going to rest. Kyle, bring me a basin of water. I want to wash my feet."

Every time Quinn washed her feet, I would test the water temperature for her. All she had to do was put her feet in the basin, and I would take care of the rest. I had become accustomed to taking care of her in the past five years.

After she was done washing her feet, her phone rang as I was about to take out the ring to propose. She hurried into the bathroom with her phone. "Mason, don't worry. Why would I marry him? Besides, I'm a company president now, and he's only an ordinary employee. He has diligently taken care of me for five years for free. Where else could I find a servant like that? Alright, alright. I'll stop talking. Otherwise, he'll get suspicious."

Quinn came out of the bathroom after ending the call. When she saw me standing by the door, she was taken aback. "Did you hear everything?"

I answered, "I didn't hear you."

She explained, "My secretary called. It's so annoying to have to discuss work this late."

I chuckled inwardly. Ever since Quinn became the president, I lost count of how many times she had lied to me. I had not exposed her because I did not want our relationship to be tense. I threw the engagement ring into the trash. Even though I was heartbroken, I had to continue smiling when I saw her. I did not want her to sense something was amiss.

All because I loved her—five years ago, and even now.

I had no idea if our relationship could continue like this. It should have been a wonderful night, but I was upset. Watching Quinn sound asleep, I was incredibly conflicted.

I lit a cigarette as I endured the long painful night without even feeling an ounce of sleepiness. Today was our fifth anniversary. I regretted not proposing yesterday because I was not in the mood. My impulsiveness got in the way of my happily ever after just because I heard some upsetting things.

However, I adjusted my mindset today. I waited at home once I finished work. As soon as Quinn returned home, I would propose to her. I was so determined that I would not waver no matter what happened this time.

I checked the time. It was already 9pm, but Quinn had not returned yet. Just as I was about to call her, my phone rang. It was Quinn, and she asked me to go to the hotel. I was deeply moved to hear this. She had promised to marry me on our fifth anniversary, so this had to be the reason she had called me.

She seemed to still have feelings for me. My five years of persistence had not been in vain. I picked up the ring from the trash can again, as hope sparked within me once more. Although Quinn was now a company president, she had not forgotten about me.

I hurried over to the hotel and saw Quinn standing at the hotel room door. When she saw me, she seemed flirtatious. "Kyle, go to the pharmacy next door and get some contraceptives. I need them. Hurry, it's urgent."

I answered, "Quinn, do we really need that..."

Quinn interjected, "Cut the crap and go get them."

Quinn's words were like royal orders, and she had been ordering me around for the past five years. I had gotten used to following them. The reason I did all this was because I cared about her, I liked her, and I indulged her.

I rushed back and was about to push the door open when it suddenly opened.

A man stood at the door. "You were quick. Just hand them over."

He took the contraceptives from my hands, and I froze in place because I saw Quinn behind him. I thought the contraceptives were for me, but they turned out to be for another man.

"Kyle, I'm sorry. Today is Mason's birthday. It's his first birthday since returning to the country. I have to accompany him."

The man named Mason Clifford smiled at me, and I knew he was mocking me.

"Is this your boyfriend? Don't you think doing this will hurt his feelings?" Mason deliberately tried to provoke me.

"No, this is how it's been for the past five years," Quinn answered as she looked at him with admiration.

She had never looked at me that way. She was condescending every time she spoke to me.

"Your boyfriend is so well-behaved. I envy you." His tone was full of sarcasm.

Quinn smiled. "I know, right? I chose him because he was well-behaved. Other than that, he's good for nothing. It's been five years. I'm already a president, yet he's still an ordinary person. However, I'm used to it. All that matters is that he doesn't cause trouble and obediently serves me."

I was particularly upset to hear that. She always thought she would become president because she was lucky. However, what she did not know was that I used my family's connections to support her, even now. My butler had advised me to give up, saying that her company would soon be eliminated. However, I did not take his advice because I still loved Quinn and was determined to support her.

Then, she said, "Kyle, be good and go home. It's our fifth anniversary today. Make some delicious food. I have a surprise for you tonight."

When she was about to close the door, I stopped her. "Quinn, that's not necessary. It's over between us."
