Chapter 3

Claire's POV

The coffee in my hand had gone cold two hours ago. I kept holding it anyway. The paper cup was soft at the rim where I'd chewed it.

Above the double doors, the red light burned. *SURGERY IN PROGRESS.*

At 3:02 a.m., footsteps came down the hall. Fast. Expensive shoes.

Daniel.

I shot to my feet. Cold coffee sloshed over my knuckles. He came. He finally understood. He finally knew how bad it was.

He wore his charcoal suit, tie still knotted. A smear of white frosting clung to his left cuff. A gold paper wristband circled his wrist. *NOAH'S 6TH, VIP.*

He didn't glance at the red light. He didn't ask for a doctor.

"Why didn't you pick up?" he said. "I called you twice on the drive over."

I stared at that gold band. Eleven years of marriage, and I didn't know the man wearing it.

"Our daughter is on an operating table, Daniel."

"I know where she is." He checked his watch. "Claire, we need to talk about something more urgent than your attitude."

---

He set his leather briefcase on the plastic side table and snapped it open.

Out came a stapled document. He laid it flat. Then he placed his silver pen on top, perfectly straight, the way he did at board meetings.

*PERSONAL LOAN AGREEMENT. Amount: $180,000.00. Borrower: Lily Ward.*

"What is this?"

"Lily's house. The bank is threatening foreclosure. She says she's running out of time." He tapped the page. "I need you to transfer it from Emily's recovery account. Lily will pay it back. Eventually."

I laughed. One short sound, like a cough.

"You're joking."

"Do I look like I'm joking?"

I dug into my purse. My fingers found the little blue passbook with the bent corner. I'd opened that account the week Emily was diagnosed. Every birthday check from my aunt went into it. Every bonus. Every dollar I skipped spending on myself.

I held it up between us.

"This is for after. Physical therapy. Follow-up surgeries. Home nursing. Dr. Patel said recovery could take years."

"The hospital is handling the surgery."

"The surgery isn't the recovery."

"You can save it back. We'll rebuild it." He pushed the pen an inch toward me. "Emily has doctors taking care of her. Noah could lose his home on Monday. Be reasonable."

Be reasonable.

He used to say that when I asked why his phone was face down.

---

I didn't yell.

I opened the folder on the chair beside me. The nurse had given me the papers at midnight. I'd read the top one so many times the crease had gone fuzzy.

I slid it out and smoothed it beside his loan agreement.

*CRITICAL CONDITION NOTICE. Patient: Emily Mercer. Age: 5.*

I pressed my finger to her name.

"Read it."

"Claire—"

"Read her name, Daniel. Out loud. That's your daughter. Your blood. Not a pipe that burst. Not a birthday party."

His eyes flicked down. Half a second. Maybe less.

Then he picked up the loan agreement and laid it right on top of the notice. Covered her name completely.

"Doctors always make it sound worse," he said. "It's liability. They scare you so you'll sign anything."

My hand flattened on the pages. My knuckles went white against the paper.

"So her life is worth less than Noah's house."

"Don't twist my words."

"Then say different ones."

His jaw tightened. He rubbed his thumb over his wedding ring. It gleamed under the hallway lights. He must have polished it for the party.

"You're being hysterical. This is exactly why I didn't want to come."

"Why did you come?"

He didn't answer that. He leaned in, his voice low and reasonable, like he was explaining a budget.

"What if she never recovers, Claire? Are you going to let that money sit there forever while Noah loses everything?"

The hallway went silent. Even the vending machine stopped humming.

I looked at the red light. Then at him.

"If she never recovers," I said slowly, "you'll have nothing left to be late for."

---

I slid the notice out from under his papers. Folded it once. Put it back in my folder, over my heart.

"No."

"No what?"

"Not one cent. Not a dollar. Not a dime. That money belongs to Emily."

He grabbed my wrist. His grip was tight enough to grind bone.

"You're doing this on purpose. You've always hated them. You want Lily and Noah to suffer."

"Get your hand off me."

"Not until you—"

"Danny?"

The voice came from the end of the corridor. Soft. Sweet.

Lily walked toward us in a pale pink party dress, a cardigan draped over her shoulders. Her heels tapped the tile. Glitter still sparkled on her cheekbone.

She went straight to Daniel. Slid her arm through his. Like she'd done it a thousand times.

He let her.

His fingers left my wrist. Red marks bloomed where they'd been.

"You," I said. "Get out of this hospital."

Lily's lower lip trembled. Her eyes went shiny on cue.

"Claire, I only came because Danny was so upset. I wanted to help."

"Help? You took her ambulance."

"That's not fair." She pressed closer to his side. "You don't understand what Noah means to him. You never even tried."

"Your son has a mother. My daughter has a father." I tapped the visitor badge clipped to my chest. *PARENT — EMILY MERCER.* "Or she's supposed to. Why does your boy deserve his love more than she does?"

Lily didn't answer me.

She looked up at Daniel. A long look. A question in it.

He gave the smallest nod.

She opened her white handbag and pulled out a folded sheet of paper. The creases were sharp. Old. Like it had been folded and unfolded many times.

"You keep calling Noah another woman's child, Claire." Her voice had gone very calm. "Maybe you should ask Daniel whose child he really is."

My stomach dropped.

"What are you talking about?"

Daniel stared at the floor. Not at me. Not at the light. At the floor.

"Daniel," I said. "What is she talking about?"

He said nothing.

Lily unfolded the paper, one panel at a time. I saw a lab logo. A table of numbers. A line in bold at the bottom.

*Probability of Paternity: 99.99%.*

She held it up so I could read it, and said every word clearly.

"Noah is Daniel's son, Claire. Your daughter isn't his only child."
