Chapter 1 of Don't Call Me Your Mate, Alpha

ELARA'S POV

The bad ideas hit me somewhere between the second glass of champagne and my father's text.

Contract signed. Ceremony Friday. He's waiting at The Obsidian Room. VIP 3. Don't embarrass me.

Don't embarrass him. The man had just sold me to a sixty-three-year-old Alpha whose last three bondmates had mysteriously "disappeared," and his only worry was whether I'd chew with my mouth open.

I stared at the screen until it blurred. Then I laughed—the unhinged kind.

Friday. Four days. The same week my graduate fellowship application was due. And he hadn't even told me he was negotiating, let alone closing the deal.

The Obsidian Room was seven blocks away. I could cover seven blocks in heels if my rage burned hot enough.

It burned hot enough.

A hostess stepped into my path the moment I crossed the black marble lobby. "Miss, do you have a—"

"Meeting someone. VIP 3. He's expecting me." Technically true. The wrong he, but I'd clarify that once I introduced my palm to his face.

VIP 3 sat at the end of a dim corridor. Through the frosted glass I saw a man's silhouette—broad shoulders, easily 6'3", the posture of old money and zero patience. My father's taste in tyrants.

I didn't knock. I kicked. The door cracked open like a starter pistol.

"Hey!"

He didn't turn. Rude. Also perfect—I wanted him off balance.

"Listen here, you geriatric fossil—" I marched in. "My father might think I'm an asset he can liquidate, but I am not merchandise. I am not a bargaining chip. And I am absolutely not spreading my legs for some debt-collecting dinosaur who probably needs a little blue pill just to—"

He started to turn.

My palm connected with his cheek so hard it sounded less like a slap than a gunshot.

"To hell with your contract!" My voice cracked but held. "To hell with my father's debts. Fuck the money, fuck the arrangement, and fuck you. I'm not for sale."

Silence. The kind with its own atmospheric pressure.

The wrong man had gone completely still—not the stillness of shock, but the stillness of a predator deciding whether you're worth the effort.

His head was still half-turned from the blow. Sharp jaw, a dark curl across his brow, a mouth pressed into a line of pure fury. Then he looked at me.

His eyes were silver. Not blue-gray—silver, like winter moons, like the edge of a blade. And furious.

The air changed. A pressure slammed into my chest—invisible, suffocating, claiming—and my lungs forgot how to work.

Alpha pheromones. Not the muted scent of a man who'd learned to manage his nature. This was raw dominance, unchecked, flooding the room until I could taste it. My knees buckled before my brain authorized it.

And then—cold fir. Snow-dusted evergreens. Woodsmoke on frozen air, crisp and sharp and almost painfully sweet.

My body recognized it before my brain did. Heat pooled low in my stomach. Every nerve rerouted toward this stranger with my handprint reddening on his cheek.

Mate bond scent. The one-in-ten-million signature that marked a fated pair. The thing my mother used to describe with misty eyes before she died.

The thing that meant my body had just identified its perfect genetic match in the man I'd called a geriatric fossil and then assaulted.

"I—" My voice came out two percent human, ninety-eight percent hormonal desperation.

"Stop!" One word. Soft. Dangerous.

He hadn't moved—hands still clasped behind his back. But those silver eyes were doing something that rearranged my internal organs.

"Did you just..." He tilted his head, almost curious. "Slap me?"

"I can explain…"

"Across my face!"

"Technically the cheek—"

"How Dare You" Level, quiet, somehow worse than a scream.

"I was aiming for someone else."

The confession hung between us, absurd and useless.

"Someone else," he repeated.

"A sick old man. Sixty-three.Arranged bonding." The words fell out of me in fragments. "I thought you were him."

"Come on, is it that hard to tell me from a 60-year-old? " The word was a door closing.

The door I'd kicked creaked wider. A server stood frozen, clutching a wine list like scripture.

"Alpha," he stammered. "Your guest has arrived. She's waiting in the—" His eyes found the handprint. "Lobby," he finished weakly.

Kaelen. Not Silas or Mortimer or whatever name my father's fossil-bride carried. The Kaelen. Heir to the Ashford pack. The Alpha who'd allegedly made a rival pack leader wet himself with eye contact alone. The living terror of the continent's supernatural elite.

And I'd just slapped him across his obscenely beautiful face.

"Oh god," I whispered.

His eyes hadn't left mine. The fir scent intensified, and my pulse dropped somewhere much lower.

"My guest," he told the server, conversational, "can wait. This one and I are not finished."

The server vanished. Smart man.

Kaelen took one step. Just one, but the room shrank to the size of a phone booth.

"You kicked my door." Another step. "You called me a fossil." Another. "You said, and I quote, 'fuck the money, the arrangement, and fuck you.'" He stopped less than a foot away. "And then you slapped me."

"It's been a crazy night, right?"

His mouth twitched, then sharpened. "The scent, little hurricane. You feel it too."

Not a question.

I swallowed. "It's... ma…mate bond"

"But you slapped me" He said it like a curse, head tilting, silver eyes burning.

"What happens next, do you think?"
