Chapter 4
This time, Emily took a long time to shower. She didn't come out until I smoked a pack of cigarettes. When I passed by the bathroom, I faintly heard her laughing.
She was video chatting with Daniel and was not even wearing any clothes.
I wondered, "She must be eager to tell Daniel the good news."
The moment I turned around and left, I felt that all my efforts seemed to be just for the sake of helping others.
After Emily came out, she pushed me into the bathroom and urged me to take a shower quickly. During that period, I had no idea what I had done. I just knew that my mind was a mess.
I let the cold water from the shower pour down on my head. Only in this way could I make my thoughts calmer.
When I came out of the bathroom, Emily was standing at the door as if she was afraid that I would escape. She couldn't wait to pull me into the bedroom. She pressed me on the bed and gently put on her stockings in front of me. She bit her red lips and looked seductive.
For some reason, I felt no emotion at all until my eyes fell on an object.
The condom on the bedside table was not the brand and model I had used before because I was allergic to other brands.
I picked up the condom and said, "Where did this condom come from?"
Emily, who was immersed in teasing me, was stunned for a moment. When she saw clearly what I had in my hand, her expression changed.
At that moment, I clearly saw that her expression looked unnatural.
Emily replied, "Honey, I...I don't know. I took it from the drawer. Did you buy the wrong one?"
Her eyes flickered, and she didn't dare to look at me.
I forced a smile and eased the embarrassment. "Maybe I bought it accidentally."
When Emily saw me turn around, she seemed to want to say something. But I didn't give her a chance to speak and walked out of the bedroom.
I took a can of cold beer from the refrigerator and went to the rooftop. I stared at the starry sky and smoked one cigarette after another without stopping. The bitter taste of beer became stronger in my mouth.
I looked through the photos of Emily and I on my phone. Those once beautiful memories could only be frozen on the phone in the end.
After I read them, I deleted all.
I looked at the clear night sky. My thoughts became extremely clear.
I wondered, "Some relationships will never have any result. Why bother to persist?"
When I put out the last cigarette, the night was over, and the dawn was rising.
Emily didn't look for me. I didn't go downstairs to look for her. When I went to the bedroom and took a look, she was sleeping soundly, as if what happened last night had never happened.
That night, I stayed alone in the study and stared blankly until dawn.
I planned to talk to Emily early in the morning.
Before I could look for her, Emily had already left early. She took all the beautiful clothes in the closet away. The suitcase disappeared.
The box of condoms that didn't belong to me also disappeared.
Emily just left without saying goodbye.
It wasn't long before I received a text message from Emily: [Honey, the doctor said that a pregnant woman's mood is very important and suggested that I go out more often to relax. I think we should be apart for a while. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. So, I plan to go back to my hometown and share this happy news with my family. Wait for me.]
Emily went back to her hometown.
However, Daniel's Twitter was updated soon after.
He posted a photo of them holding hands tightly on the train. The ring on Emily's hand was eye-catching. I bought it for Emily seven years ago.
Although I had expected the situation, I was still caught off guard.
During the days when Emily was not at home, Daniel would update his Twitter every day.
Daniel posted on day 1: [Every day with you is a beautiful day.]
He continued to post on day 2: [You are like a brilliant firework, lighting up my heart every night.]
I was speechless.
Emily, in the photos, was as happy as a little girl. I was lost in memories when looking at the photos.
Seven years ago, when we were in love, she also smiled so happily and carefree.
I wondered, "Since Emily has chosen Daniel, why should I force her to be with me?"
I silently nodded my thumbs up and typed: [You are so sweet. Why don't you get married?]
Chapter 5
During this period, I had been living in the group and had never set foot in that cold home again.
In the past, the most important things in my life were my family and my beloved Emily. So, I would get off work on time every day and turn down all unnecessary social engagements.
But now, I had re-planned my new life and started to devote myself to work. In my spare time, I went back to see my elderly parents.
Their greatest hope was that I could give them a grandson so that they could live out their days in peace.
I looked at their graying hair and suddenly felt that I was very unfilial. I had not taken good care of my parents for seven years.
During this period, I spent more time with my family.
The nostalgia I once had in my heart finally disappeared.
A week later, Emily came back, and Daniel sent her downstairs.
It just so happened that I was packing up some of my things at home and preparing to move out. I decided to cut off ties with everything here wholly.
When Daniel saw me, he called out politely, "Matthew, are you... moving out?"
I ignored him.
When Emily saw me packing my luggage, she immediately panicked and quickly stopped me. "Honey, where are you going?"
I looked at her belly and guilty look. I remained calm. "Go back to the company and live there for a while."
Emily glanced at Daniel. Daniel immediately interrupted and said, "Matthew, are you going to let Emily stay at home alone?"
I laughed after hearing this, "You will be with her. Why should I worry? Besides, didn't you also accompany her back to her hometown? I saw that you took good care of her."
Daniel smiled awkwardly. Emily immediately stepped in and explained, "Honey, you are jealous of such a small thing. You are too petty. I didn't let you accompany me because I didn't want you to take leave. You know that you will be deducted money for taking leave. It was unnecessary. Daniel was kind enough to accompany me. But instead of thanking him, you are blaming him in a sarcastic way. You should apologize to him right now."
