Divorcing My Absent Husband Summary

I thought my marriage was perfect—until I brought our daughter home. While I bled through sleepless nights, my CEO husband Ryan hid in the guest room, praising his twenty-four-year-old assistant, Madison. The breaking point wasn't collapsing from exhaustion—it was when he blamed me. So I hired a doula on his credit card, packed my bags, and left him a night log and divorce papers. Now Ryan is desperate to prove he can be a father and husband. But he's too late—another man already showed me what it means to share the load.

Chapter 1 of Divorcing My Absent Husband

I sat in the emergency room at 2 AM, holding our two-month-old daughter as she burned with a fever. My hands shook so badly I could barely dial my husband’s number. He didn't answer the first time. Or the second. On the third try, his young assistant, Madison, picked up. "Ryan is presenting right now," she whispered urgently. I told her Ellie was in the hospital. When Ryan finally called back an hour later, his voice was thick with annoyance. "Madison said Ellie has a fever. If the doctor says she’s stable, do you really need me there?" I looked at my baby’s flushed face and thought about all the nights he slept in the guest room to "prepare for meetings." The panic in my chest suddenly went ice cold. "No," I said, my voice completely steady. Then I hung up, and blocked his number.

POV: Hannah

I stood in the middle of the living room, one arm wrapped tight around Ellie’s tiny frame as her little legs kicked and twisted against my hip. The gas had kept her crying nonstop through the night, her face scrunched up in that helpless way only a newborn can manage, and my lower back had started to burn hours ago. Every breath pulled tighter, every shift of my weight sent a fresh spike of pain up my spine, but I didn’t care. I just held her closer, rocking her gently while I waited for the front door to open.

The lock clicked. Relief flooded me so fast my knees almost buckled.

“Ryan?” I called out, voice softer than I meant it to be.

He stepped inside first, followed by a small cluster of people I didn’t recognize. A man in a crisp suit carrying a camera bag, a woman with a tablet, and a young woman in a tailored blouse who couldn’t have been more than twenty-five. The woman—Madison, I would learn later—looked at me with polite but distant eyes.

“Morning board meeting ran long,” Ryan said, shrugging out of his jacket. He glanced at the team behind him. “They needed the final shots for the quarterly report. Figured I’d get them done here so I wouldn’t have to leave again tonight.”

I forced a smile, even as my back screamed. Ellie let out a small whimper, and I pressed my lips to her forehead. “You’re home early. That’s… good.”

He nodded, already heading toward the guest room. “I’ll be back in ten. Need to change into something a little less formal for the photo.” He disappeared inside, closing the door behind him.

The team moved like they owned the place. The photographer, Derek, set up a portable light near the baby monitor station and started snapping test shots of the empty crib. Madison followed him, typing notes on her tablet. “We’ll need the baby in the center for the framing. This room has the best natural light.”

Ryan emerged five minutes later in a soft gray sweater that hugged his shoulders just right. He scooped Ellie up from my arms without asking, cradling her against his chest like he’d done it a hundred times. “Come on, little girl. Let’s get you set up for your first official corporate photo.”

I watched him walk to the arranged baby room—the one we’d decorated together last week—his steps confident, his voice already turning baby-soft. “Yeah, that’s it. Big smile, buddy.” He positioned the stool, the soft blanket, the stuffed bear on the shelf, exactly the way the photographer had instructed.

Derek adjusted his lens. “Perfect lighting. Hannah, you should join for the full shot. Show the family unit.”

Ryan glanced over his shoulder, still bouncing Ellie gently. “Nah. She hates photos anyway. Too many people staring.”

Madison stepped in before I could answer, her tone smooth and professional. “Hannah’s condition is too fragile right now. She just had a major surgery, and the pain meds are still strong. Better to keep her comfortable in the other room.”

Ryan didn’t even hesitate. He adjusted Ellie on his shoulder and kept his eyes on Derek. “Yeah. Hannah hates photos anyway.”

The words landed like a slap. I stood there frozen, the sound of my own heartbeat loud in my ears. This was the same man who had sat beside me in the delivery room, holding my hand, promising he’d share everything—every late night, every feeding, every single worry. He had sworn he’d be the one to change diapers and stay home when I needed him. Now he was letting Madison speak for me like I was background noise.

The shoot wrapped quickly. Ryan carried Ellie back to me once the last flash popped, but his arms were already pulling away. “I need to head out for the late dinner. Just pop her in the crib, she’ll settle if you nurse her quick.”

I took her back, the weight of her body familiar and grounding. I stepped back half a pace, keeping my arms locked around her. “If you want the title, do the work,” I said, loud enough for Madison to hear. My voice came out colder than I intended, but it felt right.

Ryan’s eyebrows lifted. “What?”

“I said, if you want the title, do the work.” I turned to Madison, holding Ellie steady even as my back protested. “She’s your promotion. Your photo op. Your family unit. Stop treating me like I’m disposable.”

Madison gave me a tight smile, already typing on her tablet again. “Noted, Hannah.”

Ryan opened his mouth, but I didn’t wait. I walked straight to our bedroom, yanked open the closet where his private clothes still hung, and started grabbing the sweaters, the dress shirts, the socks—everything he’d left behind. I dumped them into the rolling suitcase by the bed, zipping it shut with sharp, angry motions. Then I wheeled it into the hallway and stopped.

The suitcase sat there, wheels locked, the faint scent of his cologne still clinging to the fabric. I stood beside it, one hand on the handle, the other resting on Ellie’s back as she finally quieted against me. My pulse hammered in my throat. The main bedroom was now out of reach. The guest room was his. No more pretending nothing had changed.

Ryan stepped into the hallway behind me, eyes flicking from the suitcase to my face. For a second, neither of us spoke.

I didn’t look at him. I just held Ellie tighter and waited for whatever came next.
