Chapter 1 of On the day my sister got engaged, I was diagnosed with cancer

On the day of my cousin's engagement, I waited alone in the sterile, fluorescent-lit corridor of the hospital, clutching the result in my trembling hands. The rough paper felt like it was infused with lead, weighing down my very soul. Each breath I took was a struggle, as if the air itself had conspired to suffocate me.

The doctor’s words echoed in my mind, a haunting refrain: “Terminal cancer. Discovered too late. You have, at most, three months left to live.” The diagnosis had hit me like a sledgehammer, shattering my world into a thousand irreparable pieces.

As I staggered out of the hospital, my vision blurred with a veil of tears. The bustling crowd around me seemed like a distant, abstract concept. The lively chatter of passersby felt alien and mocking, as if they were unaware of the impending darkness that had just enveloped me.

I fumbled with my phone, hands shaking uncontrollably, and dialed my mother’s number. The call connected, and I could barely manage to choke out the words, my voice cracking under the weight of despair. “Mom, I-I got the results from the doctor. I-I-I have cancer. It’s terminal. The doctor said I’m going to die.”

On the other end of the line, her response was a chilling contrast to the gravity of my words. Her voice was cold, almost indifferent. “Good. If you haven't got much time to live then at least you won’t be around to cause any more trouble or compete with your sister.”

Before I could process her words, the call ended abruptly, leaving me with a dead silence that felt even more suffocating. My heart ached as tears streamed down my face, the sting of betrayal mixing with the deepening sense of despair. I stood there, motionless, in shock. How could my mother be so cruelly indifferent at a time when I needed her most?

The world around me continued at its relentless pace, but for me, time had stopped. All I could feel was the gnawing void where love and support should have been replaced by a profound loneliness that seemed to engulf me entirely.

I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself as I faced the harsh reality of my situation. My life, once filled with the hopes and dreams of a bright future, now seemed reduced to a mere countdown, marked by the cold, unfeeling hands of fate.

With a heavy heart and a mind consumed by sorrow, I began to walk away from the hospital, each step feeling like a struggle against the weight of my impending fate.

The night I met Nate was nothing short of serendipitous. I had just finished a late shift at my part-time job, the weight of the day dragging me down, and the campus was in darkness. As I hurried back to my dorm, my steps echoed in the empty street, the anxiety of being alone at night was amplified by the shadows that seemed to move with me.

As I rounded a corner, the rustling sound behind me grew louder. Heavy footsteps echoed my own, and my heart raced with rising panic. Driven by fear, I swung the umbrella I was carrying with all my strength, only to be struck dumb with shock when I saw who was there.

Standing wide-eyed and bewildered, was Nate. He was the son of one of our professors, a detail I was oblivious to at the time. His surprise quickly turned into a gentle smile. With hands held up, he calmly reassured me, “I’m sorry for startling you. I didn’t mean to scare you. I was just trying to catch up and say hello.”

The awkwardness of the moment melted away as we exchanged introductions. Nate was kind, with an easy charm that seemed to cut through the tension and awkwardness. Over the months that followed, our chance meeting evolved into a series of encounters and what began as casual conversations grew into deeper connections. The more I got to know him, the more I felt drawn to his warmth and sincerity.

Our relationship flourished under the encouragement of his father, who had always been supportive of the special thing we had. By the time we graduated from graduate school, Nate’s proposal was a dream come true. His father’s blessing was the final piece in our puzzle of happiness. It felt like everything was falling into place, and I was ready to embrace the future we had envisioned together.

But there was one final thing for us to do—Nate wanted to visit my parents to discuss our marriage. It had been six years since I left home for college, and within that span of time, my parents had never reached out. Despite the distance and the silence, I steeled myself to face them for the sake of our future.

The fated day came. Arriving at the house, the familiar yet distant memories of my childhood came flooding back. My parents greeted us with stoic indifference. My mother’s words cut like ice, “You didn’t need to come back.”

Nate, ever the diplomat, stepped in to break the tension. His polite and respectful demeanor was a stark contrast to the cold reception. After a strained dinner, we left the house, the weight of the evening lingering between us.

"Hey," he said, reaching out to find my hand in the darkness. "Everything will be okay," he murmured gently. I gave a small nod, and he brought our joined hands to his lips, pressing a tender kiss against them.

The awkward silence as we drove home was a stark reminder of the chasm that lay between my past and my future.

The next day, to my absolute shock, my phone rang, and I saw my mother’s name flashing on the screen. She hadn’t called me in years. My stomach twisted into knots as I hesitated before picking up.

"Hello?" I answered, my voice tentative, unsure of what to expect.

"Come home for dinner," she said, her tone unusually soft, almost inviting. "I'll be cooking your favorites."

The words stunned me. Was this the same woman who couldn’t care less about me for all these years? A small spark of hope ignited inside me. Could she finally be changing? Could she, after all this time, be making an effort?

I mulled it over for a moment, then told myself that maybe . . . just maybe, this was a turning point. Maybe she wanted to rebuild some semblance of a mother-daughter relationship. My heart, ever-yearning for her love and approval, took over, and I found myself agreeing.

I spent the rest of the day in a daze, half nervous, half hopeful. As evening drew near, I made my way back to the house I swore to never step foot in, the house that had always felt more like a prison than a home.

When I arrived, my mother greeted me at the door with a smile—an unfamiliar sight. Her eyes softened as she ushered me inside. The table was set, filled with dishes I hadn’t tasted in what felt like a lifetime. The aromas of my favorite childhood meals filled the air, stirring bittersweet memories.

"Come, sit," she said, motioning to my old seat at the table. I sat down hesitantly, my heart pounding in my chest.

Throughout dinner, she kept piling food onto my plate, telling me to eat more, commenting on how thin I’d gotten. For the first time in what seemed like forever, I felt a sliver of affection from her. It was like I was finally getting a glimpse of the mother I had always dreamed of having—caring, attentive, loving. I tried to savor it, letting the moment linger as long as I could.

But then . . . the warmth turned to ice.

Without warning, she dropped the bombshell that shattered the illusion. "I want you to break up with Nate," she said, her voice casual, as if she was merely suggesting I switch brands of laundry detergent.

My fork clattered onto the plate. I stared at her, the words barely sinking in. "Excuse me?" I croaked, unsure if I’d heard her correctly.

"Leigh Ann likes him," she continued, unfazed. "It would be better if you stepped aside for her. She’s your cousin, after all. Family. Don’t you think you owe her that much?"

I blinked, disbelief crashing over me. "You want me to . . . give up Nate? For Leigh Ann?" My voice shook with the absurdity of it all.

She didn’t even flinch. "Yes. You’ve had your time with him, but now it’s time to think about what’s best for the family. Leigh Ann likes him, and frankly, he’d be better off with her."

I felt a lump rise in my throat. Was this really happening? My own mother was sitting across from me, asking me—no, demanding—that I hand over the man I loved to my cousin like I was giving up a toy I no longer wanted.

My mind reeled. How could she even suggest such a thing? I searched her face for any sign of compassion, any sign that this was some kind of twisted joke, but there was none. She was serious. Dead serious.

"I’m not going to do that," I said firmly, my voice barely a whisper, but strong with conviction. "I love Nate, and I’m not just going to walk away from him because Leigh Ann has a crush."

My mother’s face darkened instantly. The warmth she had feigned earlier disappeared in an instant, replaced by cold fury. She slammed her hand onto the table, the sharp sound cutting through the air like a blade.

"Ungrateful brat!" she spat, her voice dripping with venom. "After everything I’ve done for you, after all the years I put up with you, this is how you repay me? Choosing some boy over your own family?"

I could barely believe what I was hearing. My heart sank as I realized that this was the real reason she had invited me over—not out of love, but to manipulate me into giving her what she wanted. The warmth I had felt moments ago felt like a cruel joke.

"You don’t deserve anything, not him, not us," she hissed. "You’re a selfish, worthless girl, and I regret the day I ever gave birth to you."

Her words hit me like a physical blow, each one cutting deeper than the last. I could feel my world crumbling around me, the love and approval I had so desperately sought from her dissolving into ashes right before my eyes.

I stood up slowly, my legs trembling beneath me. I couldn’t stay there a moment longer. Without another word, I turned and walked out, my mother’s cruel voice still echoing in my ears.

From that moment on, everything I had ever known, everything I had ever believed in, had been turned upside down. I had no family. I had no home. All I had left was Nate—and I would fight with every last breath I had to keep him.
