Chapter 1
At his daughter’s first birthday party, the husband ordered a separate dish for his assistant.
Without a moment's hesitation, I sent a message to my lawyer friend and asked him to draft a divorce agreement.
Seeing the agreement, Gavin Rivers laughed out of anger.
"There are hundreds of dishes at the birthday banquet, but you're only staring at Ning Ning's dish?"
"Can you please curb your possessiveness?"
"Whatever you say," I said calmly, "I'm going to get a divorce anyway."
When I hurried back to the banquet hall, my husband's assistant took the seat that originally belonged to me.
She was wearing a dress of the same color as Gavin Rivers, and her every move and gesture acted like a hostess.
"Ren Zhu and the boss look like a perfect match."
"The boss goes to work with Ren Zhu every day, and they might even be living together."
When I heard the company employee's words, my heart felt like it was being gripped by an invisible hand.
Seeing me coming back, Riley Young apologized.
"Sister-in-law, it's all my fault that I spilled red wine on your clothes due to my clumsiness."
"You won't blame me?"
Before I could respond, Gavin Rivers spoke first.
"Don't I know what you are like?"
"Go sit at table number three. I ordered you a bowl of porridge."
Everyone praised Gavin Rivers for his attentiveness to his colleagues.
"Just now the girl said she had a stomachache, so Mr. Jiang ordered some porridge for her."
"Her feet were rubbed and bleeding, and Mr. Jiang put a band-aid on them for her."
"The lady must be lucky to have such a thoughtful man."
I smiled on the surface, but my nails dug deep into my palms.
Gavin Rivers used to hate stupidity more than anyone.
Sometimes he would get angry and fire his assistant just because he had an extra name tag.
I haven't seen such patience for a long time.
"Today's protagonist is my daughter, please don't talk about me."
Gavin Rivers spoke calmly without any explanation.
The birthday party was about to begin, and he stopped me from getting up.
"I forgot to tell you, I've already decided on Luna's godmother."
Before I could react, Riley Young put a protective locket on Luna.
She placed a kiss on the side of her daughter's face, "I will be Luna's mother from now on."
Looking up, the defiance in her eyes was clearly visible.
Keep everything simple.
Near the end, Gavin Rivers suddenly interrupted the flow.
"According to the rules, Luna should kowtow to Ningning to be recognized as her godmother today."
"Kowtow?" I frowned. "Luna is only one year old. Kowtow can easily cause suffocation and brain damage."
"Can you please think before you speak?"
Gavin Rivers said in a bad tone, "Is it Luna who can't do it, or are you still skeptical about the choice of Luna's godmother?!"
"Okay, Mr. Jiang, I've already delivered the protective locket, so the ceremony is complete."
Riley Young interrupted our argument, and the man who had been arguing with me the previous second immediately calmed down.
"Can I send a few words of blessing to Luna?"
With Gavin Rivers' tacit approval, the microphone was placed in Riley Young's hands.
I glanced across the table, and the wine glass with some red wine remaining on it was particularly eye-catching.
Riley Young smiled.
"I heard Luna is an IVF baby."
"Now that I look closely, it really lacks some human touch."
"The IVF baby must be very delicate. It's hard for my sister-in-law to take care of it."
"Oh, by the way, Luna knows that she is from the laboratory..."
There was a crisp sound.
I walked off the stage and slapped Riley Young in the face.
I hit her head and it tilted, and tears welled up in her eyes.
Another crisp sound.
Gavin Rivers said coldly, "This is returned to you on behalf of Ningning."
Chapter 2
After that, he picked up Riley Young and left the venue.
The scene was silent.
Try to put on a decent smile,
"Everyone can eat now."
When I got home, the left side of my face was still slightly hot.
After putting the child to sleep, I lay on the sofa with my cheeks wet.
I felt like there were dozens of lemons beating in my heart.
Sour. Swelling.
Even breathing became difficult.
It was not until late at night that the sound of the door being pushed open was heard.
Gavin Rivers reached out to touch my face, but I dodged him.
"I was wrong, Audrey Xu." He knelt on the ground and gently rubbed his face against my knees.
"But after all, you were the one who hit someone first."
"Ningning was drunk and talking nonsense. How can you argue with a drunk person?"
He smiled at me, straightened up and rubbed my nose, "Will you forgive me?"
In the moonlight, I saw the lipstick mark on the back of Gavin Rivers' collar.
I picked up the agreement on the table and handed it to him, my tone was filled with fatigue.
"Gavin Rivers, let's get a divorce."
"divorce?"
Gavin Rivers' expression was frozen as he took the agreement and read it over and over again.
After confirming that I was serious about filing for divorce, the agreement was thrown in my face by Gavin Rivers.
“Are you crazy Audrey Xu?”
"Luna just turned one year old, and you want to divorce me?"
"Do you think divorce can be accomplished with just a few words?"
"I know I was wrong today. I hit you, but everything has a cause and an effect."
"I've already apologized. When will your princess temper subside?"
"Get it straight. You're a mother now."
"Family harmony comes first!"
He said a lot and didn't notice the tears falling from my eyes.
There was a stinging pain on my face, and the wounds left by the staples on my face were burned by my tears.
Gavin Rivers subconsciously took out his wallet, his movements frozen as if paused.
"Your band-aid went to Riley Young, right?"
"I even ordered a bowl of porridge for her."
Facing my questioning, he was calm.
"So what? It doesn't mean anything."
"Divorce over a bowl of porridge and a band-aid."
“Audrey Xu, you’re making a fuss!”
Gavin Rivers spoke so loudly that he woke up his sleeping child.
The crying echoed throughout the living room.
Looking at his frowning brows, I asked,
"Do you know where Luna's bottles and formula are?"
The sudden question made Gavin Rivers freeze in his tracks.
There was a hint of sarcasm on his lips. How could he know where the milk powder was?
After having children, Gavin Rivers always believed that taking care of children was my job.
It has nothing to do with him as a father.
Holding the bottle, I signed my name on the agreement before entering the bedroom.
"You should sign it too, or I will file for divorce on the grounds that you cheated on me."
"You won't get any benefit then."
Gavin Rivers was still trying to defend himself, but I reached out and touched his face, which I had loved so much.
"Your mouth tastes like the red wine that Riley Young drank today."
"What did you do with her? It's hard to guess."
I coaxed Luna to sleep again, and when I came out, Gavin Rivers was no longer in the living room.
He tore the agreement into pieces and threw it into the trash can.
Even the pen was broken in half.
A luxury brand bag was quietly placed on the table.
That's what Gavin Rivers hid behind him as soon as he walked in.
When I opened it, a limited edition brand-name baby blanket appeared in front of me.
My eyes darkened.
Chapter 3
After becoming a mother, all the gifts Gavin Rivers gave me were related to children.
He wanted to trap me under the title of "Luna's Mom" step by step.
Two almost overlapping notification tones came from the phone.
There is news from the firm I communicated with before.
"I heard that Xu Lu temporarily retired because of having a child. I didn't expect that he would contact us on his own initiative."
"I believe that with your joining, we will be even more powerful."
“I wish us a pleasant cooperation.”
I replied to the message politely, exited the dialog box, and it showed that someone had added me as a friend.
The verification message is only five words long.
【My name is Riley Young.】
The moment I passed, her message came.
There were spots of blood on one towel and traces of moisture on the bed sheet.
Riley Young had nothing to say other than this photo.
I understand her subtext.
A little girl who just graduated and has nothing.
She had given Gavin Rivers everything she had.
Young people always have the courage of a moth flying into a flame.
Suddenly, I seemed to see myself when I was younger.
When I was sixteen, Gavin Rivers and I became the only two students in our small town to be admitted to a key high school.
Gavin Rivers' parents, who are middle school teachers, were so happy that they held banquets for three consecutive days.
But I didn't dare tell my father the news.
There were three or five wine bottles at his feet. He looked at me while clinking glasses with the matchmaker.
"Damn it, Xiuqin died a long time ago, leaving me with nothing but a money-loser like this."
"Fortunately, she looks like Xiuqin, so she should be able to get a good price, right?"
Gavin Rivers came to me excitedly and asked me when I would report.
I stammered and couldn't utter a complete sentence.
The door suddenly opened, and my father's flattering voice came,
"My little girl is good in every way. As long as you are ready, I will send her over immediately."
They looked at me as if I were a commodity.
I lowered my head in embarrassment, tears falling uncontrollably.
"I'm not going to school anymore. I have to get married."
"Do you want to get married?" Gavin Rivers' voice came muffled.
The response was drowned in tears.
That night, Gavin Rivers climbed up to the seventh floor with his bare hands. Under the night sky, his eyes were brighter than the stars.
"I brought the money, let's go to school."
Since I was a child, I was taught to listen to adults.
But at that moment, all I wanted was to hold Gavin Rivers' hand.
In high school, I was ostracized and laughed at because of my accent and the way I dressed.
Gavin Rivers is cheerful and sunny, and he quickly became friends with his city classmates.
Sensing my resistance to him, Gavin Rivers pulled me to a corner with a sullen face.
“Audrey Xu, if you don’t like me playing with them, I will only be with you.”
"Don't hate me."
Suddenly I seemed to have the confidence.
All the anxiety exploded at that moment.
I cried miserably, and he waited quietly for me to vent all my emotions.
From then on, Gavin Rivers would find me eating alone in a corner of the cafeteria.
Every day he would accompany me to drink white porridge which cost 50 cents a bowl.
Facing the strange looks from his classmates, Gavin Rivers remained calm and resolute.
"I'm from a small place too. If you look down on Audrey Xu, you're looking down on me."
Gavin Rivers and I had the same score on the college entrance exam.
Tentatively, I asked Gavin Rivers which exam he wanted to take.
He answered without hesitation, "I'll go wherever you go."
Gavin Rivers' love is passionate and sincere.
"Do you like..."
Just as I was about to ask, my father suddenly appeared in my sight.
His eyes were bloodshot.
"I finally found you."
