Chapter 1

On my birthday, Connor Simpson's first love jumped off a building due to depression. She died on the spot.

Connor blamed everything on me. I never celebrated my birthday again after she died.

After the murderer electrocuted me for more than ten hours, they forced me to call Connor. "Connor, it's my 25th birthday today. Can you come over and spend time with me?"

However, Connor did not notice anything unusual. His voice was laced with venomous iciness. "Clarisse Winter, Audrey wouldn't have died if it weren't for you. How dare you ask me to celebrate your birthday? If only you were the one who died."

I heard him coaxing a woman on the other end just before he hung up on me. That low and gentle tone was what I loved to hear the most in the past.

That night, the murderer cut my body into countless pieces, packed them in bags, and threw them in front of the police station. Connor was summoned back overnight.

He spent two days and two nights piecing together the body parts, but he did not realize that the dead person was the wife that he hated the most.

Connor Simpson arrived at the police station in the wee hours of the morning, anxiously inquiring, "Where was the body found? How long has she been dead?"

Police captain, Donald Leeman, glanced at the lipstick stain on Connor's collar and answered guiltily, "We just found her. The person's motorcycle was going too fast. We’ve already sent someone after them."

He had just finished speaking when another colleague came in from outside with a stern look. "Captain Leeman, that person should have a partner. We lost him. The road surveillance cameras are also broken. We have no leads for now."

Donald looked furious. "The murderer is challenging the police by sending the body to the police station so blatantly! We must catch them as soon as possible to give justice to the deceased!"

With that said, he patted Connor on the shoulder again. "I'm sorry I kept you from celebrating your wife's birthday."

Connor's grim face was filled with disgust at the mention of me. "Who's celebrating that murderer's birthday? Don't mention her to me!"

I floated aside, numb with heartache as I pondered, 'Yeah, he's not celebrating it.'

Rosalie Lincoln was not feeling well, and he was taking care of her.

Connor stopped loving me the day Audrey Xander died. He stayed out every night and constantly changed female companions to get back at me.

Even after I spent hours cooking a meal for him, all he said was, "Clarisse Winter, your cooking is as disgusting as you are."

That was until he met a girl in a bar who looked 80% like Audrey called Rosalie. He bought her a house and had another home outside.

Before my body was found, he had been outside watching a movie with Rosalie.

He hated me so much that he would never come to see me, let alone celebrate my birthday. In the first six months after Audrey's death, he drank every day to drown his sorrows. When he was drunk, he would strangle my neck while his features twisted with hatred.

"Don't you know she suffers from depression? You're already married to me, so why force her? Did you know she jumped in front of me? How miserable she must be for her to do that..."

I gasped with difficulty and said with tears, "Connor, I didn't do anything. I don't know anything. I beg you not to treat me like this."

He knew that I was bargaining with the vegetable seller in the market on the day of Audrey's death.

It was my birthday that day. However, he was always so busy that he did not even have time to celebrate my birthday with me.

I could only work hard on my own, prepare a table of dishes, and wait for him to come back and celebrate with me. However, all I got in return was his icy hatred.

No matter what I did or said, he stubbornly believed that I was the one who killed Audrey. He forgot that Audrey broke up with him first.

When he was in despair, I just leaned over and asked quietly, "Connor, can I pursue you?"

My heart was beating very hard when I asked him that. I had had a crush on him for ten years. It started in high school. He had good grades, so the mediocre me studied day and night to catch up to him. I finally got into the same college as him, but he still had no idea that I liked him.

Not long after college, he confessed his feelings to Audrey and got together with her. They became the most admired couple on the whole campus, and I could only hide in the corner and secretly watch him.

It was not until after graduating from college that Audrey broke up with him to study abroad.

I felt that my chance had come. No one knew how much I drank before asking this. I thought he would reject me, but he unexpectedly agreed. At that moment, endless joy made me dizzy.

We dated for two years. Even though his attitude toward me was not as passionate as how he treated Audrey, he was considerate. We eventually got married.

It was not until our third year of marriage that Audrey came back from abroad, and he reverted to his previous indifference.

Chapter 2

Connor, who used to occasionally say sweet nothings into my ear, was staring at me with a terrifying expression. After a long time, he angrily threw me on the bed. "Why aren't you the one who died? Why?"

With that said, he slammed the door and left. He did not even realize that I had gone missing two days ago.

'Connor, I'm really dead now. You must be elated,' I wondered as I smiled mockingly.

Donald froze and tried to say something, but Connor interrupted, "Show me the body. We'll do the autopsy now!"

Connor was the most famous forensic doctor in the city and had helped the police solve numerous major criminal investigations.

It had been two days and two nights from the moment he walked in the door. My body was finally pieced together, with only my head missing.

A trace of reluctance flashed across Connor's face. "The deceased is about 18-25 years old and was electrocuted before death. She has multiple fractures and several large and small knife wounds.

"Besides that, I found a gestational sac in her uterine cavity. She was probably one-month pregnant. Her pelvis is shattered... The murderer probably knew she was pregnant and tried their best to hit her in the stomach with a blunt object. If we can find the head, we should be able to identify the deceased."

Donald yelled, "What an animal! What grudge did they have against a pregnant woman that they would treat her like this?"

Connor rubbed between his temples, a little tired. "Besides that, they fed her a lethal dose of digoxin. The deceased was conscious while suffering all that."

All the police present were shocked by that statement. Such an inhuman revenge method was close to being devoid of humanity!

I felt a wave of bitterness.

Connor was really good.

During the 24 hours I was tortured, I could feel every wound on my body. That person took out a pregnancy test report from my bag and broke my hands and feet. After confirming that I could not fight back, he picked up a hammer and repeatedly hit my stomach.

That day, the abandoned warehouse was filled with my screams. He hit me a full 223 times.

I had no power to fight back and could only watch the blood ooze from my lower body before I finally died of excessive blood loss.

After confirming that I was dead, he picked up a saw beside him and sawed off my head. The sound of flesh and bones being torn apart by the saw teeth was sharp and piercing. The ground was covered with my blood.

'Connor, I was in so much pain,' I thought.

However, Connor touched my thigh the next second, and my breathing paused instantly.

'Is he going to find out?' I wondered.

I had a black birthmark on the inside of my thigh. He once thought it was ugly and asked me to get it removed with laser treatment.

Connor said, "There seems to be a burn here. The deceased's leg may have been burned by something."

I smiled bitterly before remembering that the man had ignored my screams and pressed a burning knife on it to cover up my identity. Now, there was nothing there except the burn marks.

The police present frowned. There had not been such a brutal tragedy in a long time.

Five years ago, there was a serial rape and murder case that targeted young women.

Connor had completed his internship and obtained a forensic license at the time.

To ensure my safety and find the murderer as soon as possible, he once locked himself in the autopsy room to dissect the body. He did not eat or drink for three days and three nights.

That was one of the few memories I had of him being nice to me.

Connor suddenly found a small piece of cloth of an unclear colour stuck in my hand. He picked it up with tissue forceps, put it in a container, handed it to Donald, and said solemnly, "Check if there's any DNA remaining on it."

Chapter 3

With that said, he turned to look at the other side. "See if anyone has made a police report recently. If they reported a missing woman, pay more attention. The deceased's blood has been sent for data comparison, but the results are expected to take three days."

Connor's phone rang once he finished speaking.

"Connor, why didn't anyone pick up the birthday cake I ordered for Clarisse at the bakery? She's not answering my calls either. Is Clarisse with you?"

It was his sister, Celia Simpson, who was also my only best friend at school. If it were not for her, I would not have met Connor.

My parents died young and I had no other relatives.

After Audrey's death, she was the only one who would secretly celebrate my birthday for me.

As expected, Connor's face darkened when he heard my name. "With me? Who does she think she is? As for why she didn't text you back, she was probably embarrassed. If it wasn't for her, would Audrey be dead? Despite this, you're even thinking of celebrating her birthday?"

Hearing Connor's hateful voice, Celia answered hesitantly, "Connor, you haven't moved on? But you already married Clarisse. Can't you treat her well? Besides, no one thought Audrey would jump. This has nothing to do with Clarisse, okay? Clarisse loves you so much..."

Connor interrupted her impatiently before she finished speaking. "Enough, don't mention her to me. She can go anywhere she wants. It has nothing to do with me. Your sister-in-law will only be Rosalie from now on!"

As soon as he finished speaking, it felt like a sharp knife was twisting in my heart and I was in so much pain that I could not breathe.

Ever since he met Rosalie, he would bring her home from time to time. They left traces of their love everywhere in the house.

Every time I argued with him, he just smirked. "Clarisse, you have no right to argue with me. You can't stand it? Divorce me then."

Although Connor was smiling, his eyes were indifferent. Seeing me crying in front of him, his smile widened. He knew that I loved him so much that I would not divorce him easily.

However, I wanted to tell him before I died. I wanted to say, 'Connor, let's get divorced as you wished.'

I had prepared the divorce agreement long ago. I was just reluctant to leave him, but he kept humiliating me and trampling over my feelings. It hurt me so much that I could not bear the pain. I did nothing wrong. Why did he have to treat me like that?

Celia sighed helplessly at hearing his remark. "Connor, stop doing this. Otherwise, you'll regret it."

Connor sneered and replied, "Why would I regret it? I wish she would die in front of me to atone for her sins!"

After hanging up, Connor stood straight and gloomily looked at the scenery outside the window.

Donald heard everything and advised, "Connor, your sister is right. The person is gone. You should cherish the people you have now. You've ignored her for so long. If it had been any other woman, she would have been unable to stand it long ago. Listen to me. Hurry and go find her."

Connor wiped his face and answered somewhat hoarsely, "No way. Audrey fled abroad to recuperate because she got depressed from her family going bankrupt and had people chasing her for debt every day. She didn't study abroad at all.

"If I didn't marry Clarisse, maybe Audrey wouldn't have relapsed into depression and jumped off a building. Maybe we could have gotten back together... Clarisse is the culprit. She shouldn’t even show herself in front of me again!"
