Chapter 2
Greg unceremoniously ordered enough oysters and clams to cover the whole table.
"Noah, eat more of these oysters. They are good for you." Greg glanced meaningfully at Joanna. "Joanna often complains to me that you're lacking in a certain area."
Then he picked up a bunch of clams and bit into them, coating his mouth with the sauce.
Joanna sat next to Greg and across from me at the table. She did not refute him. Instead, she covered her mouth and chuckled. "Greg, don't speak nonsense. Leave him with some dignity."
Under the table, I could clearly see Greg rubbing Joanna's calf with his foot. Joanna did not dodge. Instead, she lifted her foot and hooked it around his.
[Patience level is rising... Current progress: 10%.]
The system's notification echoed in my mind.
Greg opened a bottle of beer and pushed it right in front of me. "Come on, drink! Don't act like a girl. I heard your monthly salary is only $8,000? Joanna must've suffered being with you."
Joanna sighed and looked at me bitterly. "Yeah. I wanted to buy that new bag, but he kept dragging his feet. Greg is better. That necklace he gave me back then was worth over $10,000, and he gave it to me without even blinking."
I picked up the wine glass and politely filled Greg's glass instead of getting angry. "You're right. I'm indeed incapable. I'll need your help with Joanna's fitness routine from now on."
Greg laughed and reached out to hold Joanna's shoulder. "Don't worry. I'll train her well."
Joanna blushed and shyly pushed him away, but her efforts failed.
When it was time to pay, the waiter brought the bill over. "Sir, that'll be $860."
I took out the card my salary was paid to and deliberately made the swipe fail. "Sorry, insufficient balance."
I awkwardly scratched my head and used a credit card.
Greg scoffed and spat on the ground. "What a nuisance, having to use a credit card for a meal. Joanna, what do you see in a man like this?"
Joanna rolled her eyes and took Greg's arm. "I see him as honest and easy to control."
On the way home, Joanna sat in the passenger seat and covered her nose. "Noah, what's that smell in the car? It smells fishy. Get the car washed tomorrow. Give it a thorough cleaning inside and out. Also, Greg said he's a little short on cash lately. Don't you have $50,000 left on your credit card limit? Cash it out and lend it to him."
The veins on the back of my hand gripping the steering wheel bulged as I nodded in agreement. "Okay."
[Mission completed! Reward: Panoramic listening device.]
Back at home, I slipped the miniature listening device into the fold of her phone case while Joanna was taking a shower.
I put on my earphones and immediately heard the sound of water from the bathroom and Joanna's voice as she sent a voice message, "Darling, that idiot agreed. Tomorrow, I'll make him cash it out. Also, we need to hurry up with that thing we discussed. I'll transfer his premarital assets and then dump him."
Greg's voice came through. "Hehe, you're smart. Did I hurt you tonight?"
"Hehe, shut up! You're so annoying..." I took off my headphones and threw them on the table. My stomach churned.
The bathroom door opened. Joanna came out wrapped in a towel, her hair still wet. She walked up to me and looked condescendingly at me. "Noah, I think we should have a child."
She touched her belly, her face serious. "I've thought about it. I'm not getting any younger. Go to the hospital for a full checkup tomorrow, especially for your sperm motility. Also, for the sake of raising our child, you'll have to give me your bank card from now on. Men shouldn't have money. Money corrupts you."
The next morning, I pretended to go to the hospital for a checkup, but I actually went to the bank and the Ministry of Housing.
The results chilled me to the core.
The card in my name, with $500,000 in savings, had been emptied by Joanna in batches. The remarks were all 'loans' or 'shopping'. The recipients were all Greg.
Chapter 3
This half a million dollars was the inheritance left to me by my parents, and it was also the down payment I was planning to use to buy a bigger house. Now, it was all gone.
Greg's social media feed just updated with a photo of him collecting a car. It was a brand new BMW 5 Series.
The caption wrote: [Hard work pays off. Here's a big toy I'm rewarding myself with!]
His 'toy' was bought with my hard-earned money.
When I got home, Joanna was sitting on the couch applying a face mask. Seeing me back, she handed me a health examination report. "Noah, take a look for yourself."
I picked it up and looked at it. The report was fake. It said I had severe asthenospermia, and my chances of conceiving naturally were extremely low.
"The doctor said you'll basically never become a father."
Joanna looked disdainful, with deep contempt in her eyes. "No wonder we haven't had any luck in conceiving during our three-year marriage. Noah, are you even a man?"
I had just opened my mouth when my phone vibrated.
Greg had sent a message. I clicked on it to open a video. The background was the gym's locker room.
In the video, Joanna was kneeling on the ground, looking up. The scene was unbearable to look at.
Then, there was a text message.
Greg: [Your wife feels so nice, but you can't make her happy. I'll make the baby for you.]
Smash! I smashed the glass cup in my hand hard on the ground, and fragments flew everywhere.
[Warning! Warning! Impulsiveness during the mission will result in the system being unlinked and the host being eliminated!]
The system's red light blared again.
I gasped for breath, my chest heaving.
Joanna was startled, screaming, "Noah, what's wrong with you? You can't perform, yet you have the nerve to throw a tantrum? Clean up the floor! If you cut my foot, I won't spare you!"
I crouched down, picking up the glass shards one by one. The sharp edges cut my fingers, and blood dripped onto the floor. The pain brought me back to my senses.
That evening, Joanna brought Greg home. She called it her personal trainer's at-home fertility yoga sessions.
"Since you can't perform, I'll have to get my body in shape. Even if we do IVF, we need a good foundation," Joanna said matter-of-factly.
Yoga mats were laid out in the living room. The two of them did partner yoga in front of me, and their movements were extremely suggestive.
Joanna let out soft moans, completely ignoring me.
I was sitting on the couch next to them, watching this scene unfold.
[New Extreme-Level Mission: Hand them water, wipe their sweat, and compliment Greg's physique.]
[Mission Reward: $5 million in cash, Patience level +20.]
I stood up, poured two glasses of cold water, grabbed a towel, and walked over to them.
Greg was on top of Joanna. Seeing me approach, he whistled provocatively. "Oh, Hughes, you're so thoughtful."
I handed him the water and picked up a towel.
Greg deliberately brought his sweaty face closer. "Here, wipe me down."
I took the towel and gently wiped his face like a servant attending to his master.
"Mr. Adams, you have a great physique. I could never build muscles like that in my entire life," I said with a smile.
Greg patted his chest muscles proudly. "Of course. A man has to be tough, unlike a spineless wimp like you."
Joanna lay on the mat, her eyes alluring. "All right, ignore that loser. Greg, let's continue."
It was late, yet Greg showed no sign of leaving.
"Oh, it's too late. I'm too lazy to go back." He stretched and looked at Joanna.
Joanna immediately chimed in, "Then stay for the night. The guest room is empty, anyway."
She turned to me and ordered, "Noah, go make Greg's bed. Get that new silk comforter. Don't use your old one. It's dirty."
I turned around to enter the guest room and take out a new quilt from the cupboard.
As I made the bed, my hand reached under the pillow, where a pair of scissors lay.
I gripped the handle. The icy touch sent a chill through my body. Just one stab. Just one stab into that monster's neck…
[Patience level 99%... Almost full.]
[Please endure the final mission.]
Chapter 4
I closed my eyes and slowly released the scissors.
During Greg's stay, our home became their love nest.
I was like a housekeeper, cooking for them, doing the laundry, and even helping Greg wash his smelly socks after he changed into new ones.
My emotions had been suppressed to the extreme. I was like a pressure cooker about to explode.
There was a family dinner on Saturday.
Joanna proposed it, saying it was to announce good news.
All the relatives sat at one table in the private room.
Joanna held Greg's hand as she pushed the door open. "Let me introduce you all. This is my chosen brother, Greg Adams. He's the owner of a chain of fitness centers."
The relatives' gazes were immediately drawn to the gold watch on Greg's wrist.
"Oh, this young man is so energetic. He must be a successful person." My mother-in-law smiled so widely that the wrinkles on her face were obvious. She pulled Greg to the main seat.
I sat silently in the corner. Nobody paid any attention to me.
During the meal, Joanna stood up, holding a glass of juice. "I called everyone here to announce good news."
She touched her belly as a happy smile spread across her face. "I'm pregnant."
The private room instantly erupted in excitement.
"Congratulations! Congratulations!"
"The Hughes family finally has a baby!"
The relatives raised their glasses.
I sat there, gripping my cutlery tightly.
Pregnant? We had not been intimate for three months. It was obvious whose child it was.
My mother-in-law glanced at me, saying sarcastically, "Oh, this child will be as smart as his uncle. Hopefully, he won't end up like a certain someone who's been a spineless coward and a failure his whole life."
Greg proudly put his arm around Joanna's shoulder as if he were the master of the household. "Don't worry, Mrs. Laker. I'll adopt this baby as my godson and treat him like my own."
After a few rounds of drinks, Joanna pulled a document from her bag and threw it in front of me. "Noah, now that I'm pregnant, this house has to be transferred to my name to provide for the baby. Also, Greg said he's willing to contribute money and effort to get our child into the best school possible, but his name has to be added to the house as a guarantee for the baby's education fund."
I looked at the Property Gift Agreement.
The house was bought in full before our marriage. Now, she not only wanted to take it away, but also wanted to add the other man's name to it. She even wanted me to make room for their b*stard child.
"Noah, just sign it." Greg lit a cigarette and blew a puff of smoke in my face. "You know what you're like. This child has a future with me. If you sign, I can leave you a small room in this house to live in and take care of you in your old age. If you don't sign..."
He sneered, his threat palpable.
All the relatives at the table were looking at me.
"Noah, hurry up and sign! Joanna wouldn't scam you, would she?"
"That's right. Even Mr. Adams is willing to help. Don't be ungrateful."
I lowered my head as my shoulders began to tremble violently.
[Ding!]
[Mission complete! You have endured total humiliation.
[Patience level has reached 100%!]
[Reward distributed. $100 million in cash received!]
[A top-tier legal team is ready for you!]
[God-level fighting techniques loaded!]
A warm current instantly surged through my body. My muscles seemed to inflate with power as countless fighting techniques instantly rushed into my mind.
I looked up at Greg's repulsive face, Joanna's greedy eyes, and these snobbish relatives.
I suddenly laughed out loud. My laughter grew louder and louder as it echoed throughout the private room.
Everyone was stunned.
"Noah, have you lost your mind?" Joanna yelled with a frown.
I picked up the agreement and tore it in two in front of everyone. Rip! Then, I tore it again, this time into shreds.
I threw the paper scraps at Joanna's face. "You'll get this signature over my dead body!"
