Chapter 1
For sixteen years, I was the loyal shadow and unmarked bedmate of Darius, the Alpha Heir of the Silver Moon Pack. I took eighteen silver daggers for him, surviving only because of my hidden White Wolf bloodline.
But tonight, he tossed a vial of heat-inducing potion onto our bed and ordered me to drug Caleb, the terrifying Supreme Alpha of a rival pack.
"Make Vivian think he forced himself on you," he commanded coldly.
Darius wanted to ruin Caleb's reputation so Vivian, the noble female who once rejected Darius in disgust, would leave Caleb and come back to him. To Darius, my sixteen years of bloody loyalty and my eighteen silver scars meant less than winning back his childhood crush. He even promised to arrange a random mate for me afterward, wrapping his cruel dismissal in the guise of a reward.
Sixteen years of blind devotion turned to ash in my mouth. I was nothing but a disposable shield, a convenient tool to be thrown to a violent predator just to make another woman jealous.
I took the potion and walked into the Supreme Alpha's heavily guarded territory, ready to pay my final life debt and cut ties with Darius forever.
But when the terrifying Alpha's glowing golden eyes locked onto mine, he didn't tear me apart. Instead, he snapped an ancient mithril bracelet onto my wrist and claimed me as his fated Luna.
Chapter 1
Elara POV
The bedchamber's curtains, a deep claret velvet so thick they seemed to swallow the moonlight, plunged the room into a heavy stillness. I lay on the massive oak bed, the silence broken only by the crackle of the hearth. The air, still dense with the aftermath of our intimacy, clung to my skin.
Darius, the Alpha Heir of the Silver Moon Pack, stood by the fireplace. His back was a rigid line against the flickering light. He did not look at me. Instead, he tossed a small glass vial onto the silk sheets. The vial, no bigger than my thumb, made a soft, slithering sound as it rolled to a stop against the bare curve of my hip, its coldness a stark contrast to my skin. I looked down at the dark purple liquid swirling within.
"Take it," Darius ordered, his voice as flat and cold as river stone.
I sat up, pulling the sheet to the hollow of my throat. "What is this?" I asked, the words barely a whisper.
"A potion," he replied, finally turning his head. "It contains a trace of wolfsbane and a heavy dose of herbs to force an Omega into an early heat."
A knot of ice formed in the pit of my stomach. I stared at the man I had served for sixteen years. When I was five years old, a rogue wolf nearly tore my throat out in the snowy streets. Darius threw a single gold coin to the rogue and bought my life. He did it just to anger his father. Since that day, I became his shadow. I took eighteen silver daggers for him over the years. Silver was deadly to our kind. It poisoned the blood and stopped the healing process. The only reason I survived was the ancient White Wolf bloodline hidden deep within my veins. The White Wolf bloodline, ancient and silent, stirred faintly in my veins, as if it knew something I did not. No one knew about my bloodline, not even Darius. I was his unmarked bedmate, his loyal shield, and his willing Omega.
"Why?" I asked, my voice a faint tremor.
"I need you to drug Caleb," Darius said, walking toward the bed. "The Supreme Alpha of the Blood Eclipse Pack. Set him up. Make Vivian think he forced himself on you."
The weight of his words felt like a physical pressure, a heavy stone settling upon my sternum. "You want me to ruin another Alpha?" I whispered.
"I want Vivian to catch you," Darius corrected me. "I want her to see him as a monster."
Vivian was a high-ranking noble female in our pack. She was also Darius's childhood love. Years ago, Darius took a silver blade for Vivian, but she pushed him away in disgust because of the bloody mess. He brought me into his bed out of spite, showering me with affection to make her jealous. He even shattered the bones in his own older brother's arm when he tried to touch me, spending months recovering from the subsequent punishment. I thought that meant he cared for me. I thought I was more than a convenience.
"Vivian wants to be Caleb's Luna," Darius continued, his eyes darkening with a feverish obsession. "If she catches him losing control and attacking a lowly Omega like you, her pride will be wounded. She will give up on him. She will finally come back to me."
Sixteen years of blood and scars, and he weighed them against a woman who had never bled for him. I looked down at the vial again, then at my own hands. I thought of the eighteen silver-inflicted scars that mapped my body, and I realized their combined weight meant less to him than these few ounces of purple liquid.
"I will do it," I said. My voice was a hollowed-out thing.
Darius's forward momentum ceased. The muscles around his brows twitched as his gaze swept my face, searching for a flaw in my compliance. My swift agreement seemed to unsettle him more than any protest. As his own wolf grew restless, the scent of burnt wood from the hearth seemed to swell and thicken in the air.
"If you are afraid," Darius muttered, stepping closer, "I can find another female to do this. You do not have to..." He reached out to touch my cheek. My chin tilted back instinctively, a fraction of an inch, just enough for his fingers to meet empty air.
"I am not afraid," I said steadily. "I will do as you command."
His hand hovered in the space between us for a second before he let it fall. He masked the dark gloom in his eyes and picked up a velvet robe, throwing it over my shoulders.
"Good," he said coldly. "Slip the potion into his drink, tear your dress, and scream. Caleb will lose his mind. I will break the door down before he can actually mark you." He turned his back to me, walking toward the heavy oak door. "I will protect your reputation afterward," he added without looking back. "And when this is over, I will personally choose a strong Warrior from the pack to be your mate."
The door clicked shut, leaving me alone in the dark. I held the vial tightly in my hand, my fingers white. The cold emptiness inside me was not a void—it was a kindling, waiting for a spark.
Chapter 2
Elara POV
The morning light, filtered through the stained glass of the high windows, painted bruises of color on the stone floor. Every scrape of Darius's boots on the flagstones, every rustle of his vest, was a sound amplified in the vacuum between us. I dressed myself in a simple gray gown, smoothing out the wrinkles. I turned to face him and performed a perfect, deep curtsy. It was the standard greeting of a lowly Omega to an Alpha Heir.
Darius stopped buttoning his vest. He stared at my lowered head. "Elara," he called out, his tone unusually stiff. "If there is a specific mate you wish to bond with, tell me. I will use my power as the Alpha Heir to arrange it. We will part on good terms."
Parting on good terms. It was a dismissal wrapped in the guise of a kindness. I remembered the snowy night, the terrifying jaws of the rogue, and the gold coin that saved my life. I swallowed against the bitter constriction in my throat.
"Thank you, Alpha Heir," I smiled faintly. "I accept your arrangement."
Two days passed. Darius ordered the pack's craftsmen to forge a delicate silver necklace. It held a rare, glowing moonstone in the center. He placed it on my dressing table as a parting gift. Before I could even touch it, the door to my chamber burst open. Vivian stormed in, limping slightly. She had just returned from Blood Eclipse territory, her pride in shreds after Caleb had publicly rejected her. Her face was twisted in rage and humiliation. She saw the moonstone necklace, grabbed it, and hurled it against the stone wall. The gem struck the flagstones with a sharp crack, the impact scattering a constellation of glittering fragments across the floor.
Darius rushed into the room. I expected him to release his Alpha anger at the disrespect to his gift. Instead, he knelt on the cold floor. He gently took Vivian's injured foot into his lap and began to massage her ankle.
"Do not cry, Vivian," Darius said softly. "Caleb is just arrogant. You need to play hard to get. Show him you do not care."
I stood in the corner, invisible. I watched the man who had once shattered his brother's arm for me kneel at another's feet. Darius looked up at me. "Elara," he ordered. "Go to the kitchens. Prepare a basket with the finest cuts of fresh venison. It is Caleb's favorite. Vivian will deliver it to him as a peace offering."
I nodded and walked toward the door. As I stepped into the hallway, Vivian's sharp voice echoed from the room. "Why is she still here, Darius? She disgusts me."
"Patience, my sweet," Darius replied carelessly. "Once you agree to be my Luna, I will give you all the treasures in this castle. I will even give you Elara to do with as you please."
I stared at the basket, at the deep red of the meat that should have been mine. A slow, heavy cramp began to twist in my stomach, and the sixteen years of blind loyalty I had harbored felt suddenly like a frostbitten limb, numb and lost to me.
I walked down the grand stone stairs of the castle. The pack Warriors standing guard looked away, pretending I did not exist. They smelled the shift in the wind. They knew the Alpha Heir had abandoned me.
I packed the finest cuts of venison into a silver basket. I did not give it to Vivian. I walked out of the Silver Moon territory alone. Using the last of the coins Darius had ever given me, I paid a silent coachman to take me in a rickety carriage through the six grueling hours of treacherous, frozen pines that made up the neutral zone. By the time I reached the heavily fortified borders of the Blood Eclipse Pack, my entire body was stiff with cold.
A dozen heavily armed border guards surrounded the carriage instantly. After a harsh interrogation where I offered the basket as a tribute from a lowly Omega, they blindfolded me and marched me into a massive, imposing hall. Caleb, the Supreme Alpha, sat on a throne carved from black iron. He looked cold, terrifying, and utterly untouchable. When he saw me, he waved his hand. The heavily armed subordinates bowed and quickly left the hall, trembling in fear. Caleb leaned forward. His dark eyes locked onto mine, and his pupils slowly began to glow with a dangerous, golden light. His gaze was not that of a cold ruler, but of a wolf who had finally found his prey—or his salvation.
Chapter 3
Elara POV
I stepped forward and placed the silver basket on the long wooden table. "Supreme Alpha," I said softly. "I bring a gift from the Silver Moon Pack."
Caleb stood up. He walked slowly down the steps of his throne. As he got closer, he stopped. He took a deep breath, his chest expanding. I saw his golden eyes widen slightly. The scent. I did not know what he smelled, but the air between us suddenly grew thick and heavy. For me, a sudden, sharp chill struck the back of my throat, as if I had inhaled a lungful of frosted air. It was followed by the acidic tang of wild berries crushed under the heel of a leather boot, a scent edged with something like iron. My pulse, which had been steady, gave a hard, painful kick against my ribs. A strange, restless energy began to move under my skin, making my palms itch and my blood feel too warm in my veins.
Caleb completely ignored the venison. He ignored the political games Darius was trying to play. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a thick bracelet made of dark mithril. Ancient runes were carved deep into the metal. It was a powerful artifact designed to protect the wearer from silver weapons. Before I could speak, he grabbed my wrist. His grip was hard and unyielding. He snapped the mithril bracelet around my wrist and locked it. The mithril was cool against my skin, and I felt a strange hum of power, as if the bracelet recognized me.
"Supreme Alpha?" I whispered, confused and breathless.
"Will you come to the full moon ball?" Caleb asked, his voice a low, rough rumble.
"Do you want me to come?" I asked nervously.
A small, dangerous smile touched his lips. "Yes."
I pulled my hand back and fled the hall. My skin felt feverish, my thoughts a chaotic whirl. When I reached the iron gates of the Silver Moon castle, Darius was pacing in the snow. He looked relieved when he saw me, but then he stepped closer. He inhaled sharply. The muscles in his jaw bunched into hard knots.
"You smell like him!" Darius roared. He grabbed my arm and saw the mithril bracelet. "What is this?" he snarled. He fumbled with a hidden clasp, his frustration mounting until it finally sprang open. He tore the bracelet from my wrist, leaving a raw, red mark behind. The metal scraped my wrist raw, leaving a burning red mark that seemed to pulse with a faint, protective warmth.
"Take this back to him!" Darius shouted at a nearby Beta guard. "Tell him the Omegas in my territory do not need gifts from another Alpha!"
Darius dragged me into the castle. "Vivian has taken your bedchamber," he said coldly. "You will sleep in the cold side wing from now on." He pushed me into a small, damp room in the abandoned tower. He locked the door behind us and began pacing, cursing Caleb's name. His scent turned sharp with rage and something darker, more possessive. His eyes were wild with a sudden, predatory lust that had nothing to do with affection. He walked toward me, reaching for the laces of my dress.
"No," I said, stepping away from him. My voice was quiet but held a core of ice he had never heard before. "Leave."
Darius froze, his hand hovering in the air. He struggled to suppress the violent, chaotic wolf inside him, a vein throbbing in his temple. He clearly saw me not as a person, but as a possession Caleb had dared to touch. He glared at me, his pride warring with his base instincts, then finally turned and slammed the door behind him, the sound of the heavy bolt echoing my sentence.
I rotted in that freezing tower for three days. On the night of the full moon, the heavy iron lock finally clicked. Darius stood in the doorway, tossing a servant's uniform and the vial of potion at my feet. "Vivian's welcoming ball is tonight," he snarled. "Caleb is the guest of honor. You will serve him this wine. You will rip your clothes and scream. If you let him actually touch you, Elara, I will kill you myself."
I picked up the vial, but this time, I saw not a tool, but a key. A key to my own cage.
The ball was in full swing. I walked through the crowded hall, carrying a silver tray with a goblet of red wine. The potion was already mixed inside. I found Caleb standing near the balcony, away from the crowd. I offered him the goblet. Before he took it, he reached out and pinched my chin. His fingers were burning hot.
"Do you regret this, Elara?" he asked softly.
Guilt swallowed me. I shook my head, avoiding his piercing gaze. Caleb smiled faintly and drank the wine in one gulp. A moment later, he stumbled. I caught his arm and guided him into a nearby guest bedchamber. I helped him onto the bed covered in thick furs. My hands shook violently as I reached out and began to unbutton his silk shirt.
