Chapter 1 of Claimed By My Ex Husband's Godfather

The soft glow of candlelight danced across the elegant dining table, casting warm shadows on the crystal glasses and fine china. Elena Thompson had spent the entire day perfecting every detail. The herb-crusted lamb roast was timed to perfection, the salad crisp and fresh, and a bottle of his favorite vintage wine breathed beside two spotless glasses. Twelve years of marriage, and she still approached their anniversary with the devotion of a newlywed.

She smoothed the silk dress she had chosen, the one Daniel had once complimented, saying it made her look “proper and elegant.” It hugged her figure a little more snugly now after years of putting his needs above her own. She had quit her promising marketing career right after their wedding because he wanted a wife fully dedicated to their home. No late nights at the office, no business trips, no distractions. She had given it all up willingly, believing that her sacrifices were the foundation of their perfect life together.

“I’m so lucky,” she whispered to herself, adjusting a stray rose in the centerpiece. Her friends envied her, married to a successful businessman from a powerful family, living in this luxurious penthouse, never wanting for anything material. But lately, the nights had grown longer and emptier. Daniel’s “meetings” stretched later and later. He came home smelling of expensive cologne that wasn’t hers, his touches perfunctory when they happened at all.

Still, she pushed those doubts aside. Tonight would be different. She had prepared everything with love, just as she always did.

Her phone buzzed on the counter. A message from her best friend, Sophia.

Sophia: How’s the anniversary dinner coming along? Can’t wait to hear all about it tomorrow! 💕 Don’t forget to send pictures when he arrives.

Elena smiled and replied quickly.

Elena: Almost ready. He should be home soon. Wish me luck!

She set the phone down, glancing at the clock. 9:15 p.m. He was late, but traffic in the city was always unpredictable. He would walk through the door any minute, see the beautiful setup, and pull her into his arms like he used to in the early days.

A firm knock sounded at the door.

Her heart lifted. Maybe he had forgotten his keys in his rush this morning. She hurried over, a bright, welcoming smile blooming on her face as she opened it.

It wasn’t Daniel.

Towering in the doorway stood Alexander Voss, her husband’s godfather. At forty-six, he carried an aura of unshakeable power. His tailored black suit accentuated his broad shoulders, and silver threads lightly streaked his dark hair, adding to the sharp, commanding presence that made even seasoned businessmen nervous. His gray eyes, cold and piercing, swept over her once.

“Mr. Voss,” Elena said, surprised, stepping back politely. “I wasn’t expecting you this evening.”

Alexander’s gaze lingered on her for a moment, taking in the apron tied over her silk dress, the faint sheen of sweat on her forehead from hours in the kitchen, and the subtle exhaustion etched around her eyes that no amount of careful makeup could fully hide.

“You look unwell,” he said. His voice was deep, measured, carrying the weight of someone who rarely wasted words. There was no warmth in it, yet unlike the superficial pleasantries from Daniel’s family or friends, his observation felt genuine. As if he actually saw the woman beneath the perfect-wife facade.

Elena laughed lightly, waving a hand. “Oh, it’s nothing. Just a busy day preparing for our anniversary. Daniel should be home any moment. Would you like to come in for a drink while you wait?”

Alexander didn’t move. He simply handed her a thin folder.

“Documents for Daniel. Tell him I expect them reviewed and signed by morning.”

Their fingers brushed as she took the folder. His hand was steady and warm against her cooler skin. For a brief second, his eyes met hers again, sharp, observant, almost probing.

“Take care of yourself, Elena,” he added quietly before turning away. He disappeared down the private hallway toward the elevator without another word or backward glance.

Elena closed the door, leaning against it for a moment. Alexander Voss was a man of few words, emotionally distant even with his own godson’s family. Yet whenever their paths crossed, at family gatherings or rare dinners, he was the only one who seemed to notice her. Not as “Daniel’s wife,” but as a person. It was a small thing, but in her isolated world, it stood out.

She placed the folder on the side table and returned to the dining area. The candles had burned lower. The lamb was beginning to cool.

By 11:30 p.m., worry had crept in. She checked her phone again, no messages from Daniel. Just as she was about to call him, another notification chimed. An unknown number.

Unknown: If you want to know where your husband really spends his anniversary nights, go to The Grand Plaza Hotel. Room 1809.

Elena’s stomach dropped. Her thumb hovered over the delete button. This had to be a cruel prank. Daniel would never betray her. Not after everything she had sacrificed, her career, her independence, even strained ties with her own family when they expressed doubts about his world. She had been the obedient, supportive wife for twelve years. He loved her. He had to.

But the doubt lingered like a shadow. The late nights. The distant kisses. The way he sometimes looked through her rather than at her.

“No,” she whispered firmly. “I trust him. This is ridiculous.”

Yet at 11:50 p.m., unable to shake the unease, Elena grabbed her coat and keys. She would go, prove the message wrong, and come home to laugh about her paranoia with Daniel later. The drive through the glittering city streets felt surreal. Her hands gripped the wheel tightly.

The Grand Plaza Hotel loomed ahead, its opulent facade glowing under the night lights. She valet-parked and made her way to the 18th floor, her heart pounding with every step. The elevator hummed softly. In the mirrored walls, she saw a woman who looked smaller than she remembered, pale, determined, clinging to hope.

The hallway on the 18th floor was quiet, carpeted luxuriously. As she approached Room 1809, soft laughter drifted through the door, a woman’s light, intimate giggle followed by a man’s low chuckle.

Elena froze, her hand raised to knock. That laugh… it sounded familiar.

She knocked anyway.

The laughter stopped abruptly.

Footsteps approached. The door swung open.

Daniel Thompson stood there, his shirt casually unbuttoned at the collar, looking every inch the handsome, successful executive. His expression remained perfectly composed, no shock, no panic. Just mild annoyance, as if she had interrupted an important meeting.

“Elena?” he said evenly.

Before she could respond, a small figure darted into view from behind him, a boy, no older than ten, clutching a toy car in his hand.

“Daddy! Come play with me!”

The child’s innocent voice sliced through the air like a blade.

Daddy.

Elena pushed past Daniel on legs that suddenly felt like lead. Inside the luxurious suite, a woman rose from the edge of the king-sized bed, her long dark hair falling gracefully over her shoulders. She turned, and Elena’s blood ran cold.

Sophia.

Her best friend. The woman who had stood beside her at her wedding as maid of honor. The one she had confided in during every lonely night and every small marital struggle.

Sophia’s eyes widened briefly before settling into a look of cool composure mixed with something almost like pity.

“Elena… you shouldn’t have come here.”

The boy tugged at Daniel’s sleeve again. “Daddy, who is this lady?”

Daniel gently detached the child’s hand, his voice calm and authoritative. “Go back inside for a minute, Liam.”

As the boy disappeared into the adjoining room, Elena stood frozen, the pieces slamming together in her mind with devastating clarity. The child was ten. Their marriage had lasted twelve years. That meant…

Her voice emerged as a broken whisper. “How old is the child?”

Daniel met her gaze without flinching. No guilt clouded his handsome features. No remorse. Only cold, detached indifference, the same look he might give a minor business inconvenience.
