Chapter 1
I needed care the most because I had a miscarriage after a car accident, but Rodney Cook left me alone in the hospital, saying that there was an emergency at the company.
That night, I received a photo of him kissing.
I was familiar with the two in the photo, and they were Rodney and Macey Brown, his stepsister.
I didn't ask any questions and just quietly deleted the photo.
Later, he accompanied Macey to choose wedding rings. They looked like a couple about to get married.
I smiled, "Choose a big one. Otherwise, your love seems to be more fragile than paper."
He panicked instantly and grabbed my wrist in a hurry. "Macey and I have nothing to do with each other. Can you stop making a fuss?"
...
When I received a call from Rodney while driving, I had a car accident and lost the baby in my belly.
I was taken to the emergency room. After several hours of surgery, I survived.
When I woke up in the general ward, there was no one around me.
The nurse told me that my boyfriend arranged for me to be hospitalized and left in a hurry. He said that he had something urgent to deal with at work.
I calmly asked the nurse to call my parents for me.
It took my parents two hours to drive over. When they arrived, my mom turned her back to me and cried.
My father was usually quiet. His eyes flashed with anger.
"Where's Rodney? Why isn't he here?"
My parents both know that I gave up my job and came to this city because of Rodney.
If it were in the past, I would have tried hard to explain to my parents that Rodney was busy and that he worked so hard for a better future for us.
However, I didn't want to lie for him anymore.
I was tired.
My parents noticed the fatigue in my eyes and didn't ask any more questions.
Rodney called me and said a few words of concern. Then, he said that he had to go on a business trip. Since my parents were here, he would come over when I was discharged from the hospital.
My mom wanted to take the phone away and argue with Rodney, but I merely said "H'm" and hung up the phone.
My mom wanted to say something, but she just sighed when she saw my calm face.
My parents were with me in the hospital.
On the day of discharge, my parents waited for a long time because they wanted to see Rodney.
Rodney called me and said that his flight was delayed and he could not pick me up.
I calmly said OK.
In just two minutes, I received a message. It was a photo.
There were only two people's silhouettes in the photo, one of whom was Rodney, my boyfriend. His watch was the birthday gift I gave him last year.
The other one was Macey, Rodney's stepsister. They were kissing in the photo.
When Macey was in college, she and her boyfriend worked as singers in a bar. She had a fight with Rodney over this, and she didn't come back for many years.
I thought that they were just brother and sister.
Therefore, when she showed up last year in a bad state and dared not to go home, I took her to Rodney's and my apartment and took good care of her.
In order to be with Rodney, I tried my best, hoping that Macey could go home.
I didn't expect her to intervene in the relationship between Rodney and me again and again.
I deleted the only message from Rodney.
My parents dropped me off at the door of my house and ran into Rodney, who was about to go out.
"Cecilia, are you OK? I'm just about to pick you up."
I looked at the cartoon Band-Aid on his finger and said calmly, "I'm OK."
My parents were furious and confronted Rodney for a long time. Rodney kept looking at me, but this time, I remained silent and watched him being scolded by my parents.
Chapter 2
When I had recovered a lot, my parents left after half a month.
I returned to the institution the next day. I was a tutor at an educational institution.
I had just finished tutoring one of my students when I heard my phone ringing.
I quietly walked out the door with my phone in hand and picked up the phone.
"Cecilia, where's my car?"
I frowned. Rodney and I each had a car.
After I had a car accident, my car was taken for repair. Rodney's car was bought by my parents.
There was nothing wrong with me driving my car.
However, his words implied that the car should belong to him.
"I drove it. My car is being repaired. Think of a solution yourself in the next few days."
I was about to hang up the phone, but Rodney said, "How about you drive the car to my company at noon? I'll pick you up these few days.”
I was about to refuse when George Collins, the principal of the institution, came over and called my name.
So, I hung up the phone in a hurry.
"Cecilia, your abilities are obvious to all. The institution will have one more partner. The branch in the city nearby needs you."
I had considered it before, but when I thought about the trivial matters I would have to deal with after marrying Rodney, I rejected the principal.
Now...
"Mr. Collins, I'll go."
I took out the money that had been deposited in the card over the years. I was about to use it when I got married.
However, the marriage with Rodney seemed to be a losing gamble.
George looked at me with satisfaction and said that I could go there once the decoration was completed.
In the evening, my colleagues in the institution heard that I was going to be the principal of the branch and wanted to celebrate for me.
My phone rang untimely. "Cecilia, there is something wrong something wrong with Macey. She said she was going to see you. Go back and open the door for her."
Rodney's commanding tone made me feel disgusted.
My colleagues looked at me in confusion. "We are having a dinner party. Don't you have the key?"
"You drove the car away, and it will take me two hours to get back.”
"Take a taxi back."
"OK. Be cautious."
Rodney's hypocritical tone disgusted me, so I hung up the phone immediately.
Later, Rodney called two more times, and my colleagues were all embarrassed.
I had to answer the call. "Cecilia, do you have time?"
I suppressed my anger and said, "Yes, what's wrong?"
...
"Macey's ex-boyfriend came to ask her for money. She was beaten up by him and had no money. So, she had no choice but to bother us."
I just found Rodney's unnecessary explanation ridiculous.
Macey was his sister. No matter what happened to her, Rodney, as her brother, would help her.
I had a car accident that day because he asked me to buy a birthday cake for Macey on the way back.
Later, I had a car accident, but he used the excuse of being on a business trip to accompany her on her birthday.
"I see. Take good care of her."
Hearing my words, Rodney got angry. "If you care about Macey, you should go back and take care of her!"
My colleagues standing next to me heard Rodney's roar and widened their eyes. They probably couldn't believe that I had chosen such a man as my husband.
"What else do you want to say?"
"Do you have to be like this? Macey said there were many things that only you could understand. Why do you suddenly become like this?"
What he said was funny.
If he had had a car accident and laid in a hospital bed, facing a life-threatening situation, he might have been soberer than I did.
"In that case, why don't you go back and take care of her."
I hung up the phone. Rodney might realize that I didn't plan to go back, so he never called me again during the dinner.
I had a good relationship with my colleagues, and several of them even ordered milk in the restaurant and didn't have me drink alcohol.
I drove slowly, and it took a long time before I arrived downstairs of my house.
I thought I would have to face Rodney's questioning after returning home, but he was not at home.
The room was empty and eerily quiet.
I breathed a sigh of relief.
I washed up and was about to sleep, but suddenly, I heard rustling noises from the living room.
I had never been a good sleeper. When I got up and turned on the light, I saw a man standing in the living room.
"Cecilia, you're back."
Rodney reached out to hug me, but I slapped his hand away.
I didn't know what he was planning. He came back in the middle of the night. What about Macey?
"Cecilia, since you are here, take the money and go to the hospital. Macey's wound is serious, and I don't have enough cash."
"You don't have enough cash. Don't you have a card?"
I looked at the man in front of me coldly. I loved him and trusted him in the past.
When he took the money I gave him and went out to have fun with Macey, I wanted to keep him by my side.
"Cecilia, Macey is in danger. Please help her."
Rodney asked me for help because of Macey. I never expected their relationship to be so close.
"I don't have any money now."
Most of my money had been invested in the institution, and the remaining had been transferred to my mom. I only had enough money for food.
"Why are you kidding at a time like this, Cecilia? You have 200 thousand dollars in your card. Just think of it as Macey borrowing it from you. Besides, she can't spend 200 thousand dollars in the hospital."
When I looked at Rodney, who was looking at me with pleading eyes, horror flooded me in waves as if I had never known him before.
"Cecilia, say something. You're not jealous of Macey, are you?"
Rodney still thought that I was petty.
"Well, if you don't want to give me the money, I'll find a way myself."
Rodney searched through all the drawers and cabinets at home, and I knew he was trying to find my card.
Chapter 3
Rodney left in anger after he didn't find any money and the card.
No one bothered me anymore. My work had been going smoothly these days, and I was waiting for the institution in the neighboring city to successfully enroll students.
A week later, I received Rodney's message: [Go to Clevel Hospital to finish Macey's discharge procedures.]
I read the message silently and ignored it.
It was my day off, and I made myself a meal at noon.
Rodney came back with Macey. When he saw me having noodles, he became angry.
"Cecilia, why don't you go to the hospital?"
I finished the noodles in the bowl and put it in the dishwasher.
Before I said anything, Macey sobbed softly, "I'm sorry, Cecilia. I didn't know you were busy today."
"Is she busy? She's off today."
I listened to their words and found them noisy.
I was about to go back to my room to rest, but Rodney grabbed my arm.
"Cecilia, I was too busy to take care of you when you had a car accident. Can you forgive me?"
I paused. If he hadn't mentioned it, I would probably have forgotten about it.
It turned out that he knew that I needed someone to take care of me at that time.
Macey was hospitalized due to an accident, and he took care of her for a long time.
"OK," I said expressionlessly, and Rodney breathed a sigh of relief.
Rodney opened the door of another room. The sheet and quilt cover in the room were brand new.
I knew that Macey lived in that room before.
"Cecilia, I gave the sheet to Macey because we don't need it. Don't you mind?"
I glanced at Rodney calmly. "I don't mind."
If he had known to ask these questions earlier, I might have been deceived by him for a few more days.
But now, when I saw them acting in front of me, I thought they were funny.
...
The next day, Macey asked Rodney to rent a house for her.
George told me that I could go to the institution in advance to take a look.
Since I would be working there for a long time, I needed to go there in advance to prepare.
Fortunately, my mom stopped me from sharing the rent for the house with Rodney.
So, I could leave without concern.
I packed up all my things and left all the gifts Rodney had given me to him.
I thought they just went out to rent a house.
Macey took a photo of the house purchase contract and sent it to me. She sent the photo to me through Rodney's account.
I looked at the unread message and tapped the photo.
Then, I realized that the house Rodney bought was the one he rented for me.
This time, he bought the house only in his name.
Later, I found that Macey forwarded a recording to me.
"OK, Macey. There will always be a room for you in this house. Don't worry. I won't allow Cecilia to bully you again."
I looked at the message calmly. It would be good to leave such a good man to Macey.
When I arrived in the neighboring city, I found a community with beautiful and peaceful environment and chose a house.
I went to the real estate agency and signed a contract. Then, I used the 500 thousand dollars that my parents had raised as a down payment.
The house was large, with a total of two thousand square feet. There were three bedrooms and a living room.
However, the house hadn't been renovated yet, so I rented an apartment in the neighborhood.
I didn't expect Rodney to call me the next day.
"Cecilia, where are you? Can I go see you?"
Compared to his previous domineering attitude, Rodney was much gentler.
"No need."
I hung up the phone calmly and blocked Rodney's number.
For the following days, I was busy with the institution's enrollment. Without the disturbance of the annoying unfaithful man, everything in my life became smooth.
However, just when I thought Rodney would know what I meant by blocking him, he came to my door.
