Chapter 1
At the product launch, I took the stage as vice president to deliver the keynote.
"The camera in this phone can capture a human face in crystal-clear detail from over three miles away."
A murmur rippled through the audience.
Someone wasn't buying it and spoke up right there in the crowd.
"The technology you're describing is something no company in the world has achieved."
"Stellaris Technologies is a newcomer. If you want people to believe you, show us actual results."
I gave a noncommittal nod.
"Of course. Please direct your attention to the screen."
The next second, an image filled the display: my husband and our business manager, walking into a hotel together. Every detail was razor-sharp.
……
In the photo, Elmer Mason's features were impossibly clear. You could make out the pores on his skin, even the stray gray hairs on his head.
I began walking the audience through the image in detail.
"I'm sure most of you recognize the two people in this photograph."
"On the left is my husband, Elmer Mason, who also serves as CEO of Stellaris Technologies."
"And on the right is our company's business manager, Lorraine Fox."
The audience exchanged uneasy glances. The venue had gone so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
"This photo was taken from the roof of the Stellaris Technologies building."
"The distance to the hotel is exactly three miles."
More than a few heads turned toward the corner of the room.
A flash of panic crossed Elmer's face before his expression hardened into something cold.
Lorraine, on the other hand, shot to her feet immediately.
"Ms. James, you're doing this on purpose to ruin me!"
"There's nothing going on between Mr. Mason and me!"
I raised an eyebrow, a faint smile on my lips. "When did I ever say there was something going on between you two?"
Lorraine's mouth opened and closed, no words coming out. Beside her, Elmer rose to his feet, his face dark.
"Ms. James, you put that photo up for everyone to see. Clearly you're implying something about me and Manager Fox."
"If you have something to say, say it directly."
"There's no need for these petty little games behind our backs."
He was still so composed. I continued.
"You're right. I do want to take this opportunity to ask what exactly the two of you were doing there."
The crowd was starting to sense something was off.
But instead of discomfort, faces lit up with the unmistakable glee of spectators settling in for a show. A few people even called out from their seats.
"Is this some kind of new guerrilla marketing strategy?"
"If it is, you have to admire the commitment."
"I don't think it's real either. Probably just a stunt to go viral."
Elmer responded smoothly, not missing a beat. "What a coincidence. We were actually at that hotel to field-test the product's performance."
"Though I have to say, your demo shots turned out better than ours."
If I hadn't already obtained hard evidence, I wouldn't have believed it either.
The man I'd loved for five years had been sneaking off to hotel rooms with our business manager behind my back.
When I first captured the image, I thought I'd gotten the wrong person.
But the company's new product was built for ultra-long-range, high-definition photography. Forget facial features; you could count individual pores.
Lorraine jumped in eagerly. "Yes, exactly! Mr. Mason and I were testing the new product!"
Everyone seemed to expect me to explode.
Instead, I calmly raised a hand, gesturing for them to relax.
"Manager Fox, if you have feelings for Mr. Mason, all you had to do was tell me."
"We can finalize the divorce paperwork today."
"Once we're divorced, the two of you can walk into any hotel you like, broad daylight, and no one will have a thing to say about it."
The color drained from Lorraine's face. She shook her head frantically.
She turned to the crowd, pleading. "Everything I said is the truth! You have to believe me!"
I knew why she wouldn't admit it. Her reputation was on the line.
And her real objective hadn't been accomplished yet.
By exposing everything here and now, I'd thrown her entire plan into chaos.
Chapter 2
Elmer straightened his suit and strode onto the stage to confront me.
"You know exactly how you got into this company, don't you, Gwendolen?"
"Without my family's support, where would you be today?"
"Now that you've grown wings, you think you can pull this kind of filthy stunt to kick me to the curb?!"
I smiled at him.
"That's right. That's exactly what I'm doing. Kicking you to the curb."
"Either forfeit your shares or give me seven million dollars in cash. Pick one."
Elmer froze for a moment, then laughed instead of getting angry. His eyes were full of contempt as he looked at me. He deliberately raised his voice so everyone in the venue could hear every word.
"Gwendolen James, what the hell has gotten into you today?"
"Those two options of yours? I'm not picking either one!"
He paused, then took a step forward. His tone carried a clear threat.
"But here's what you should be thinking about. Do you even realize this launch event is being livestreamed?"
"You're making a scene in front of all these people. Have you stopped to consider how much damage this is doing to Stellaris Technologies?"
I watched him try to change the subject and felt a cold laugh rise inside me. But my expression stayed perfectly calm, and I followed his thread right where he wanted it to go.
"Oh, I'm well aware it's a livestream."
"I also know there are already five million viewers watching right now."
"So let them be my witnesses. I, Gwendolen James, stand behind every single word I've said today."
The whispers in the venue swelled into open debate. Those who had ties to the Mason family, or who owed the Masons favors, stepped forward immediately, pointing fingers at me.
"Stellaris Technologies wouldn't exist without the Mason family backing it. What you're doing is beyond ungrateful."
"Exactly. She's just some nobody with no status and no connections. Doesn't even have the sense to know her place."
"Eating at the Masons' table, living off the Masons' money, and now she wants to turn around and bite the hand that feeds her."
"The Masons really drew the short straw. How'd they end up raising a snake like her?"
Over the years, I'd heard every kind of mockery imaginable. I was long past caring.
I looked past the crowd and let my gaze settle back on Elmer.
"Have you made up your mind? Which one is it going to be?"
Elmer stared at me, his expression shifting between dark and darker. Then he lunged forward, snatched the microphone from my hand, and bellowed into it.
"Get out!"
"Effective immediately, you are no longer vice president of Stellaris Technologies!"
"Stellaris has nothing to do with you anymore!"
Watching him come unglued like that, I couldn't help but smile.
Because I'd anticipated every bit of this.
I reached slowly into my pocket and pulled out the divorce papers I'd prepared well in advance.
"Since you won't forfeit your shares, then you've chosen the seven million."
"Sign."
Elmer stared at me in disbelief. "You planned all of this?"
"Are you really not going to stop until everyone knows, until you've destroyed me and destroyed this company?"
"I'm telling you one more time, there is absolutely nothing between me and Lorraine!"
I waved my hand, signaling him to save the explanations. A thread of impatience crept into my voice.
"We're both adults. There's no need for excuses."
"All you need to do is pay for the choices you've made."
When he opened his mouth to argue again, I leaned in close. Right next to his ear, I whispered with a smile.
"You don't seriously think I only had one photo, do you?"
"If you want more evidence, that's fine. I'll give the people exactly what they're asking for."
"Let everyone get a nice long look at those intimate pictures of you two."
I turned to grab the remote.
Elmer blocked my path, gripping my arm tight.
He'd panicked. His eyes darted across the crowd before he leaned in and hissed at me under his breath.
Chapter 3
"What the hell do you think you're doing?"
"Don't forget, Stellaris belongs to the Mason family. My father built this company from the ground up. Who gave you the right to pull any of this?!"
He raised the microphone and addressed the crowd with an apologetic tone.
"We've had a small hiccup at today's launch event, so we'll be ending the livestream here."
"Please bear with us a little longer. We'll have a full explanation for everyone soon."
Without waiting for a response, he turned toward the front rows and called for the company's security team.
"You. All of you. Get her out of here."
"And from this day forward, she is not to set foot inside Stellaris again!"
One of the guards moved to grab me, but their captain stepped in and blocked him.
Elmer was shaking with rage. "I sign your paychecks. Are you really going to disobey a direct order?!"
What happened next caught everyone off guard.
The security captain simply bowed to him and spoke in a measured voice.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Mason. We don't have the authority to do that."
Elmer went rigid, as if he hadn't heard correctly.
His voice trembled, anger bleeding through every syllable.
"What... what did you just say?"
"I'm giving you a direct order to throw this woman out, and you're telling me you don't have the authority?"
The captain shook his head again.
His tone was steady. Not a flicker of hesitation.
"That's correct, Mr. Mason. We genuinely do not have that authority."
It wasn't just Elmer who was stunned. Everyone in the room was.
It was common knowledge that the Mason family stood behind Stellaris Technologies. Elmer was the eldest grandson, the sitting CEO. His word was law inside this building.
How could something like this even happen?
Elmer recovered quickly, turning on the security captain with bared teeth.
"Are you staging a mutiny?"
"Do you want me to fire you right now and make sure you never work in this industry again?"
Watching him bully a man just doing his job, puffing himself up like some petty tyrant, I couldn't hold back any longer.
"Enough. Throwing your weight around with a security guard makes you feel powerful?"
"Or do you just not understand plain English?"
Nobody expected me to push back that hard.
The old me had always kept her head down around the Masons, always dimmed her own light in Elmer's presence. Everyone assumed I was afraid of him, afraid of his family.
And now here I was, humiliating the Mason family's golden grandson in front of a packed room.
Whispers rippled through the crowd.
"Has Gwendolen lost her mind? Talking to Mr. Mason like that? Isn't she afraid the family will come after her?"
"With the kind of power the Masons have, crushing her would be nothing."
"She's probably going for broke. Figures she might as well squeeze them for everything she can while she's at it."
"Honestly, it's terrifying. The Masons gave her a hand up when she had nothing, and this is how she repays them."
Elmer seized the moment, riding the wave of public opinion to bury me.
He lifted the microphone, his voice heavy with practiced sorrow.
"You all see it now, don't you?"
"You saw how my family treated her."
"We gave her everything. Opened our hearts, broke protocol to bring her into the executive team, handed her opportunities most people would kill for."
"And what does she do? She turns around and bites the hand that fed her. Tries to steal the entire company."
I watched his award-worthy performance and couldn't help but laugh.
"Go ahead, play the victim. Just be careful you don't end up shooting yourself in the foot."
Elmer's expression darkened, contempt dripping from his gaze.
"So you've really thrown away every last shred of decency, haven't you?"
When I didn't flinch, he snapped.
"Fine. If security won't remove you, I'll call the police!"
He pulled out his phone, fingers jabbing at the screen.
I didn't rush. Didn't panic. Just let the words fall, cool and unhurried.
"Go ahead. Call them. I don't mind."
Elmer had no comeback. He stood there, phone in hand, trembling from head to toe.
