Chapter 2
"Her boyfriend is here!"
"Oh my god, how old is she? She does whatever is desperate and bold for love."
When Eileen mentioned Clara, there was a look of disdain in her eyes.
I didn't like Clara either, but I spoke up for her by saying, "She just arrived here a few days ago, and you gave her a nickname. You have to get rid of this habit."
"I don't care why she is here but don't talk such nonsense to others. If she hears it, she will accuse you of spreading rumors."
Eileen exclaimed, "Clara told me so herself!"
After hearing her words, I was stunned for a few seconds. I, who had been nervous, seemed to be relieved.
Clara was here alone to be with her boyfriend, hiding it from her parents and being in pursuit of love. If so, then all of this made sense.
Back at her desk, Clara had started working. As she tapped on the keyboard with her fair and slender fingers, crisp sounds rang out. As she stretched her beautiful and straight neck slightly, it rendered her pearl necklace even whiter.
Clara's beautiful appearance was truly enviable.
"Clara." I took the initiative to walk up to her. Since I knew she was in trouble, as a colleague, I should take care of her more.
I admired her courage and her purity.
After all, it was rare for a woman in her mid-thirties to gamble everything for the sake of love.
"Shall we have dinner together after getting off work?"
Eileen pulled my sleeve forcefully, her eyes full of fear. She seemed to be wondering if I had gone crazy.
Clara responded generously, "Sure!"
The time to get to work was approaching. All of a sudden, a storm accompanied by pouring rain poured on everything without warning.
Clara looked worriedly out of the window and asked, "Libby, are we having dinner today?"
Eileen, who disliked Clara, retorted, "How can you? It is raining heavily outside. Are you talking nonsense?"
Through the window, I saw Gavin's car parked downstairs.
"Let's eat together another day. I'm off work first."
Eileen looked at me with envy and said, "Gavin picked you up from work rain or shine. I'm so jealous."
"I'm in a sorry state. I'm going to be soaked."
I pushed Eileen and said with a smile, "How about going to my place?"
Eileen smiled boldly and picked up her bag, quickly saying, "I've been waiting for you to say that!"
"Libby..."
I turned back and looked at Clara in confusion, asking, "What's wrong?"
"Can I hitch a ride too? I don't live far from your place."
For some reason, Clara's words made my heart skip a beat again.
...
"Gavin, can I hitch a ride? I hope you don't mind."
Gavin had been smiling. The moment he saw Clara, he stopped smiling. When he met my scrutinizing gaze, he felt something was wrong. Smiling reluctantly, he asked, "Excuse me..."
Before I could speak, Clara interrupted and sat next to Gavin, saying, "Senior! It's me, Clara!"
"You recommended this job to me!"
Gavin raised an eyebrow and said, "Oh, long time no see. I didn't recognize you."
The way Clara sat in the co-pilot seat was too skilled, which made me look gloomy and unhappy.
Eileen stared at Clara and questioned, "Hey! Why are you sitting in the co-pilot seat?"
"Do you think you're the owner? If you want a free ride, you should behave like one!"
Gavin realized that something was wrong. He quickly said, "Clara, why don't you sit in the back?"
Clara looked embarrassed as she said, "Senior, as you know, I have been car-sick since college."
She meant that she couldn't sit in the co-pilot seat.
Gavin looked at me as if he were in a dilemma and asked for my help, saying, "Clara does have severe motion sickness."
Chapter 3
Gavin tightly held the steering wheel, waiting for my response.
"If you feel sick, swim back to your house."
"If not, let your boyfriend come pick you up. Why pretend in front of someone else's husband?"
Eileen truly lived up to her reputation as someone with a silver tongue. With just a few words, she made Clara's eyes turn red.
"Eileen, are you bullying your new colleague like this?"
Gavin, who always cared about his face, naturally chimed in when he saw Eileen making things difficult for Clara.
Standing outside the car door and holding an umbrella, I got my pants soaked halfway. I said indifferently, "Drive away. You guys should go ahead."
"You can continue with your long-time-no-see drama, I'll swim back to my house. I'll be drier than I am now."
Listening to my weird words, Gavin frowned. He knew that I was angry.
"Honey..."
I ignored Gavin, who was pretending to be pitiful. Instead, I grabbed Clara's shoulder and said, "Car sickness?"
"Okay, you go to the driver's seat. You won't get car sick when you drive."
"Eileen, please sit in the passenger seat. My husband and I want to experience what it feels like to have a driver."
Clara was in disbelief. Seeing me pulling her, she shed tears and said, "Senior, I don't have a driver's license."
Gavin looked lost, pretending not to hear anything.
"If you can't drive, then get off!"
"If you get car sick and vomit in my car, I will have to spend money on cleaning it!"
I wouldn't indulge Clara. Her pretentious look was an eyesore for me.
I knew she deliberately looked weak in front of Gavin.
She thought that she could win Gavin's favor with her good-looking face.
In front of me, she flirts with Gavin, who gave her the courage to act like this, did she think I was dead?
I pulled Clara out of the car. She stood outside the car window pitifully in the rain, saying, "Libby, I don't understand why you care so much about who is in the front passenger seat."
"In my house, sitting in the back seat is a disrespectful act to the driver!"
"But if you do care, I can sit in the back. Libby, I can't get wet in the rain. I will catch a cold."
I looked sullen. After graduating from junior high school, I gave up an opportunity to attend a regular high school and learned a trade to earn money to support Gavin's education.
Clara had no right to have the audacity to belittle me for not understanding manners.
If it weren't for me, Gavin would never have had an opportunity to go to school, and he would never have met Clara!
I slowly rolled up the car window without even looking at Clara, saying, "Where can you sit without getting carsick? On my husband's lap?"
The car started.
Gavin touched my head with his big hand, trying to calm my anger.
He comforted me gently. From childhood to adulthood, it was Gavin who comforted me every time I got angry.
"Honey, do you know where Clara lives?"
Gavin was stunned by my question. He remained silent for a while before saying, "Should I know?"
I chuckled, saying, "Why are you nervous?"
Adam's apple rolled. The car was air-conditioned, but his temples were sweating.
"Clara said she lived next to our house."
"Oh..." Gavin suddenly realized something, saying, "That's good."
Seeing Gavin's reaction, for some reason, I was nervous again.
I was nervous and anxious.
After dinner, I was washing dishes in the kitchen.
In the living room, I heard Gavin's voice, "Honey, the rain has stopped, I'll send Eileen home!"
Then, there was the sound of a door closing.
After tidying up the kitchen, I went to the room to help my daughter with her homework.
To be honest, I could no longer figure out her homework given my educational level. At most, I could only supervise her.
Until my daughter went to bed, the sound of a door opening never rang out.
I looked at the clock in the living room and saw that it was midnight.
Even if Eileen chatted with Gavin, Gavin should have come back at this time.
I dialed Gavin's phone number again. I involuntarily clenched the cell phone with my fingers.
