Chapter 1
Just grabbed a birthday present for my husband.
Saw a bunch of people gathered at the mall entrance.
I looked closer and realized the mall was holding a kissing contest.
And there was my husband, hugging another woman on stage.
They closed their eyes and kissed like there was no tomorrow.
I pulled out my phone and snapped a pic of his grand performance.
Then I tossed his gift in the trash with a blank look and walked away.
The food I made had already gone cold.
Only then did Alex Johnson finally arrive home.
He saw me sitting on the couch, expressionless.
He walked right up to me.
The sharp smell of cheap perfume made me want to gag.
He leaned in and planted a gentle kiss on my forehead.
Thinking about where that mouth had been made my stomach turn.
"Babe, I'm sorry. Got held up at work and made you wait."
The man in front of me felt like a stranger.
Since when did he get so good at lying?
He looked around and then asked,
"Hey, didn't you say you were getting me a gift today? Where is it?"
His tone was overly sweet, trying to mask his nerves.
I couldn’t help but smile bitterly inside.
Three years with him, and I knew his game.
He was just trying to change the subject.
I ignored him and headed to the bedroom.
He followed right behind.
He squatted down, trying to be affectionate.
"Sophie, are you mad because I got home late? Don't be mad, I'll make it up to you tonight, okay?"
A sly grin crept across his face as he spoke.
He pulled out a sexy nightgown from the closet.
Then he motioned for me to take a quick shower.
My eyes were full of irony.
Was this all he cared about?
I stayed still, so he came over and tried to grab my hand.
I shook him off, my tone full of disgust.
"Don't touch me, you're making me sick!"
Clearly, my words tested his patience.
His eyes flashed with anger he couldn't hide.
"Sophia, what's wrong with you? I just got home a little late, why are you so mad?"
"I know, it's my birthday, and you made a big dinner for me, but I wasn't just socializing at work, I was doing it for us."
He lay on the couch, acting all wronged.
I found it laughable.
This morning, I told him before he left for office.
Today was his birthday, and I'd make a big meal for him.
But he totally forgot.
Not only did he miss dinner, but he also lied and said he was working late.
But he was actually with another woman.
He even hugged and kissed her in public.
He's supposed to be a family man.
He doesn't fear gossip, but I do.
And now I'm the fool in his eyes.
I looked at that lying face.
Disappointment and anger welled up inside me.
I calmly played the video I took today.
In the video, he's hugging her, smiling with happiness covering his all face.
His body froze when he saw it.
His face went from red with anger to pale.
The next thing he said was,
"You were following me?"
He questioned me coldly.
His eyes were full of ruthlessness.
So this is how he sees me.
I was just buying him a birthday present.
I just happened to see this.
Her face froze for a moment, then he spoke again.
"Sophie, listen, it's not what it looks like."
I suddenly looked into those lying eyes.
"Let's get divorced!"
Chapter 2
Alex Johnson is eight years older than me.
We met at a host competition.
He was a judge for the competition at that time.
And I was a contestant.
Because I excelled in all aspects, I naturally became the champion.
After winning, Alex asked for my contact information.
He pursued me vigorously afterward.
At that time, I had just graduated from college and was inexperienced.
Although I had never had a boyfriend before, I quickly fell for him.
During this time, I discovered some of his secrets.
This was his routine after holding such competitions.
He would consciously add these girls’ contact information.
Under the guise of a mentor, he said he wanted to train them.
But I found out things were not so simple.
His conversations with these contestants were extremely ambiguous.
When I found out, I got really angry.
So I broke up with him.
But he repeatedly assured me and tried to win me back.
I gave him one last chance.
Later, we got married.
I quit my job for him.
Just because he said he didn't want me to be in the public eye.
He also said his parents were in poor health and needed someone to care for them.
I agreed without hesitation.
This caregiving lasted three years.
I'd been a full-time housewife for three years.
After getting married, I realized Alex still had a woman in his heart.
Her name was Emily Smith, the campus beauty during their college years.
Every time he talked about her, his face lit up with excitement.
Emily was very influential in their school.
Almost all the boys liked her.
He even braved and confessed his feelings to her。
He was a step from becoming her boyfriend, but she was about to go abroad.
So, their relationship ended without any conclusion.
I thought Emily was just his unfilled wish.
A past memory would always stay in the past.
But now, she was back.
The woman who kissed him on stage today.
That was his old flame, Emily.
He put his hands on my shoulders, his eyes full of excuses.
"Sophie, it’s not what you think. Emily and I kissed, but there was no emotion. It was just some lip traction."
"Besides, Emily just returned to the country and hasn’t found a job yet. I wanted to help her get a high bonus. I thought you wouldn’t mind!"
Some lip traction without emotion? He could even say that.
This shameless excuse was disgusting.
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.
Alex was the first person I'd ever seen to talk about betrayal so righteously.
I asked him, "If I had a so-called reason to kiss another man, could you tolerate it?"
I wanted to hear his answer.
But he suddenly changed the subject and focused on me.
"Sophie, what are you talking about? Are you still thinking about your ex-boyfriend? Do you want to divorce me and then go back to him?"
I laughed out loud at his words.
He always likes to use his thoughts to guess my actions.
It’s a typical case of double standards.
In his eyes, I seemed to be someone who liked to cling to the past.
Every time we quarrel, he brings up my previous relationship.
Sometimes he even talks big and calls me an immoral woman.
I had never taken it seriously, thinking he was just talking nonsense out of anger.
But this time, I couldn’t bear it anymore.
He made a mistake and now he’s turning the tables on me.
I stared at him coldly, waiting for his next move.
But his attitude suddenly softened.
He gently took my hand, with a hint of pleading.
"Babe, don’t be mad. There’s really nothing between me and Emily. No feelings at all. I’m just helping her out. When the time comes, I’ll ask Emily to come and explain."
"Besides, if you really divorce me, what will happen to my parents? You’ve always taken care of them."
I was speechless.
His words made me more determined to get a divorce.
For three years, I was his nanny.
A nanny gets paid, but I got nothing.
I gave my youth and my feelings.
All I got was betrayal and hurt from him.
I stared into his eyes and replied suddenly,
"No need. Even if you, Alex Johnson, sleep with her right now, it has nothing to do with me."
A deep feeling of suffocation overwhelmed me.
That night, I took a taxi back to my parents' home.
Chapter 3
When I got home, my parents didn’t ask many questions.
But I could see the pain in their eyes.
They prepared a bath for me.
My stomach rumbled with hunger.
Without a word, they rushed to the kitchen to make me some food.
Seeing the white hair on their temples, tears welled up in my eyes.
The people who love me most in this world are my parents.
Since marrying Alex Johnson, I've been busy taking care of his parents.
I forgot that my own parents are also getting older.
They are simple, uneducated people.
But everyone knows they adore me.
In the countryside, boys are often favored over girls.
But they insisted on having only me.
I grew up in an environment full of love.
They knew my husband was much older than me and had some doubts.
But they always supported my decisions.
They believed as long as I was happy, that’s all that mattered. And they trusted my judgement.
But I was wrong. It was my fault for choosing the wrong person.
I tried to hide my anxiety and appear calm.
I didn't want my parents to worry about me anymore.
The next day, Alex blocked the door early in the morning.
Even though I had turned off my phone, he still found me.
In these three years, I’ve lost all my friends and social life because of him.
The only place I could go was my parents’ house.
This time, there was a woman beside him.
I recognized her immediately. It was Emily Smith.
I couldn’t see her clearly before, but now I could.
No wonder Alex has been thinking about her for so many years.
She has a delicate face and fair skin; she’s truly beautiful.
But so what?
To me, she’s just a mistress who stole my husband.
To avoid worrying my parents, I pulled him aside.
"Why are you here?"
My tone was flat, without any emotion.
My main concern now was that my parents might get upset if they found out.
He pushed Emily Smith in front of me.
"I brought her here. Let Emily explain."
I couldn’t help but laugh at myself.
That’s quite an intimate way to refer to someone.
Emily got the signal from Alex and ran to me immediately.
She glanced at Alex from the corner of her eye.
"Sophie, I think you misunderstood Alex. After you left yesterday, we drank together all night, and he was confessing his feelings for you the whole time. He really loves you."
It’s the first time we’re meeting, no need to be so close.
If he loves me, why stay with you all night?
"I didn't expect you to react so strongly to our kiss. It’s my fault for not telling you beforehand. He was just being kind, helping me win the grand prize in the contest."
She sounded like she was about to cry and looked at me pitifully.
The scene from yesterday replayed in my mind.
He held her, affectionate and infatuated.
When their love peaked, you could even see their tongues getting tangled.
Is that it? You want me to not misunderstand?
My heart felt like it was being crushed by a heavy rock.
They could talk about betrayal so lightly.
They are truly a perfect match—a scumbag and a bitch.
My fists clenched involuntarily.
"Then you two go ahead and enjoy yourselves. Leave me out of it."
I turned to leave, but Alex grabbed me.
I struggled hard, but his grip was firm.
"Sophie, are you crazy? Emily already explained, why are you still being so stubborn?"
"Look at yourself! You look like a washed-up old woman. Can’t you clean up a bit? Learn from Emily and act like a lady."
I looked down at my worn-out T-shirt.
I’ve forgotten how long it’s been since I bought decent clothes.
Ever since I decided to be a full-time housewife,
I lived frugally for this family and didn’t want to burden Alex.
I even spent my own money on this family.
I didn’t expect him to despise me now.
"Then be with her. I’m done serving someone who doesn’t appreciate it. A scumbag and a bitch—a perfect match."
At some point, my fist hit Alex’s face.
He covered his bruised face, roaring in disbelief.
He wanted to keep arguing.
Until Emily got a call and had to leave.
He immediately became her chauffeur.
Without a word, he took her away.
