Chapter 2

"Take your hands off her."

The voice belonged to the man gripping Julian's arm. Deep, resonant, and carrying the unquestioned authority of someone who never had to repeat an order.

With a violent twist, the stranger wrenched Julian's hand away and shoved him backward.

Julian stumbled over the wet asphalt, his polished loafers slipping on the slick surface. He caught his balance against the side of his black Maybach, instantly clutching his wrist. His face contorted in pain and outrage as he glared at the towering figure standing between us.

"Are you insane?" Julian shouted. "This is a private dispute. Keep walking before I have my security team break your jaw."

The man ignored him entirely. Arthur turned his broad shoulders toward me, blocking the icy wind howling through the parking lot. He slipped out of his charcoal, custom-tailored suit jacket and draped it over my shoulders. The heavy fabric settled around me, carrying the rich, grounding scent of cedar, vetiver, and a trace of cigar smoke.

"Did he hurt you, Hazel?" Arthur asked, his tone dropping into a low, intimate register.

"Only my patience," I answered, pulling the warm lapels closer to my neck.

Julian scoffed from across the puddle. He straightened his silk tie, his arrogance quickly returning as he sized Arthur up. He evaluated the suit, the posture, and the expensive watch, clearly assuming Arthur was just another wealthy passerby playing the hero.

"Look, whoever you are, I appreciate the chivalry," Julian said, his voice dripping with condescension. "But you are interfering in family business. I am Julian Croft. That woman is my ex-wife, and we are currently negotiating."

"Negotiating?" Arthur turned his head slowly. The icy glare he leveled at Julian could have frozen the rain mid-air. "It looked like you were trying to drag her into your vehicle."

"She is confused," Julian insisted. He took a step forward, though he kept a safe distance from Arthur's reach. "She has a habit of playing hard to get to drive up her price. I am offering her a massive settlement to fix a mistake from our past. She just needs a little push."

"You are offering her a cage," Arthur corrected, his voice dangerously quiet.

"I am offering her the Croft name," Julian snapped, losing his forced polite demeanor. "Something she desperately needs. Do you know who I am? I own Croft Industries. I can buy whatever company you work for and fire you before dinner. Walk away, and I will write you a check for your trouble."

Arthur let out a dark, humorless laugh. He closed the gap between us, and his large hand settled firmly on my waist, pulling me flush against his side.

"If you ever come within ten feet of my wife again, Croft, I will dismantle your company piece by piece and sell it for scrap."

Julian froze. The smug curl of his lips vanished instantly. He stared at Arthur's possessive grip on my hip, then his eyes darted to my face.

"Wife?" Julian repeated, the word sounding foreign and absurd on his tongue. He let out a harsh, barking laugh. "You are bluffing. Hazel does not have a husband. She has been scraping by on her own for seven years. I had my lawyers run a background check on her last month."

"You always did employ terrible researchers," I told Julian.

"She is barren!" Julian yelled, pointing an accusing finger at Arthur. "She cannot give you an heir. I dumped her because she was useless. You are picking up my trash and calling it a prize!"

Arthur's jaw tightened. The muscles in his neck strained against his collar. He shifted his weight, preparing to lunge across the wet pavement and beat Julian into the concrete.

I rested my hand flat against Arthur's chest, stopping his momentum. I did not need my husband to bloody his knuckles on a man who was already digging his own grave.

A gust of damp wind blew a stray strand of hair across my cheek. I raised my left hand to tuck the hair behind my ear.

The gray afternoon light caught the massive stone on my ring finger.

The Sterling Emerald Signet. A flawless emerald rested in an antique platinum setting, its deep green facets catching the gray light. It had belonged to my mother. Arthur had placed it back on my finger two years ago, moments before our private ceremony in Monaco, restoring the heirloom I had kept hidden from the world. In European financial circles, the signet was more than jewelry. It identified the controlling heir of Sterling Group.

Julian's eyes locked onto the gem. All the color drained from his face in a single second.

He stumbled backward. One step. Two steps. Three. His heel hit the front tire of his car, and he leaned heavily against the wet metal to keep from collapsing.

"That..." Julian stammered, raising a trembling hand to point at my finger. "That is the Sterling Emerald. I saw it in Forbes. That belongs to the head of the Sterling family."

"You finally learned something useful," Arthur said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.

Julian's chest heaved. He looked from the priceless ring, to Arthur's imposing figure, and finally back to me. His shock rapidly mutated into a venomous, panicked sneer.

"You hypocrite," Julian hissed, spit flying from his pale lips. "You stood there five minutes ago acting like you were above my money! You acted like you had too much pride to take my settlement!"

"I rejected your settlement because it was an insult," I replied calmly.

"You rejected it because you found a bigger wallet!" Julian yelled, abandoning his polished CEO persona. "You are a fraud, Hazel! You always played the devoted, selfless wife, but you are just a parasite. You latched onto the first billionaire who looked your way. Did you trap him? Did you forge medical records to get that ring?"

"Watch your mouth," Arthur warned, taking a single, threatening step forward.

"She played you!" Julian shouted at Arthur, desperate to regain some illusion of control. "She told me she bailed out my company. She probably stole your money to do it! She is a liar who will do anything for a paycheck!"

I met Julian's frantic gaze without a single trace of anger. His desperation was pathetic. He needed me to be the villain so he could justify his own failures. He could not fathom a world where I succeeded without crawling back to him.

"You are missing the point, Julian," I said, my voice steady and devoid of sympathy. "I did not marry Arthur for his money. I married him because he is twice the man you will ever be."

"You married him for the Whitmore name!" Julian accused, his voice cracking. "You want to destroy me!"

"You destroyed yourself." I reached into the hidden compartment of my Hermes bag. My fingers bypassed the folded ultrasound report and grasped a thick, textured envelope.

I pulled out the heavy gold cardstock.

Stepping out from under Arthur's protective arm, I walked straight up to Julian. He flinched, pressing his back harder against the Maybach, expecting a slap.

Instead, I slammed the gold Sterling Group dinner invitation directly onto his chest.

Chapter 3

The sharp edge of the gold invitation scraped against Julian's suit lapel. He stared down at the embossed Sterling Group logo. His lips parted, but no sound came out; for once, his arrogance had no ready answer.

I did not wait for him to find his voice. I turned my back on his ruined expression and walked straight to Arthur's waiting car.

The next afternoon, rain still threatened the city skyline. I sat in a booth at a downtown cafe, checking the final logistics for the Sterling charity gala on my tablet. The scent of roasted espresso beans usually calmed me. Today, it merely served as background noise.

"Hazel!"

The shrill voice sliced through the low hum of the cafe.

I did not look up from my screen. I knew that pitch. Seven years ago, Clara had used that exact frequency to announce her fake leukemia diagnosis, sobbing into Julian's chest while I stood in the hallway holding his dry cleaning.

Clara Bennett stomped toward my table. She wore a tailored crimson dress, her makeup flawless, her expression twisted into an ugly sneer.

"You think you can just waltz back into town and ruin my life?" Clara shouted, slamming her hands flat on my table.

I calmly saved my document and locked the tablet. "I have no interest in your life, Clara. I barely remembered you existed until yesterday."

"Liar!" She grabbed a steaming latte off a passing waiter's tray. The waiter yelped, stepping back. Clara ignored him, glaring down at me. "Julian came home last night looking like a ghost. He wouldn't even speak to me. What did you say to him? Did you threaten him?"

"I handed him an invitation," I replied. "If a piece of paper destroys his peace of mind, that is a reflection on him, not me."

"You are trying to steal him back!" Clara hissed. She leaned closer, her knuckles white around the paper cup. "You always were a jealous, pathetic loser. You couldn't give him a child, so now you want to take mine away?"

"You don't have a child," I pointed out, my voice flat.

Clara's eyes flashed with manic fury. "I will! Once Julian secures the Croft board, we are starting IVF. And you are not going to interfere."

"I assure you, I have better things to do than stalk my ex-husband." I picked up my water glass. "Now, leave. You are making a scene."

Clara glanced around the cafe. A few patrons were already recording on their phones. She smirked, a cruel, calculating glint appearing in her eyes. She shifted her weight, pretending her ankle gave out.

With a theatrical gasp, she lunged forward, hurling the scalding latte directly at my chest.

She aimed for my silk dress. A ten-thousand-dollar piece ruined in seconds, accompanied by third-degree burns. A classic Clara tactic: inflict maximum damage, then cry clumsy victim.

I anticipated the move. I shifted my chair sideways, leaning hard to the left.

The boiling brown liquid missed my shoulder by an inch. It splashed wildly across the table, sailing right past me and splattering heavily onto the chair opposite mine.

Directly onto Clara's open Himalayan Birkin bag.

The hot coffee soaked the pristine leather, pooling inside the bag and ruining the silk lining, her phone, and her designer wallet.

Clara froze. She stared at the dripping brown mess inside her bag, her mouth hanging open.

"My bag," she whispered, her voice trembling. "My bag!"

"You really should watch your step," I said, unbothered.

Clara snapped. Her face flushed purple. She let out a feral shriek and raised her hand, aiming a vicious slap at my face. "You bitch!"

Before her hand could descend, a massive figure stepped out from the shadow of a nearby pillar.

Luke, my personal security detail, moved with terrifying speed. He caught Clara's wrist mid-air. His grip was unbreakable. With a sharp twist, he forced her arm down, slamming her hand flat against the coffee-stained table.

Clara screamed, struggling against his iron hold. "Let me go! You're breaking my arm!"

"Do not move," Luke ordered, his voice a low rumble that brokered no argument. He kept her pinned, his eyes scanning the room for any other threats.

I stood up, brushing an imaginary speck of dust off my skirt. I looked down at Clara, who was now panting and squirming against the table.

"You always were reckless," I told her. "But attacking me in public? That is just stupid."

Clara bared her teeth. "Julian will destroy you for this! He will ruin your pathetic little life!"

The heavy glass door of the cafe violently swung open, crashing against the doorstop.

Julian stood on the threshold, his chest heaving, his eyes wide as he took in the scene. He stared at the spilled coffee, the ruined bag, and finally, Luke pinning Clara to the table.

"What are you doing?" Julian roared, charging forward. "Let her go!"
