Chapter 1 of Carrying My Ex-Fiancé’s Mafia Uncle’s Baby

I spent three years serving whiskey until 2 a.m. so Marco Moretti could finish law school without debt.

Two months before our engagement, I drained my savings to cover the gambling bill he swore would be his last.

On engagement night, he pulled me into the service hallway, slid his thumb beneath my satin strap, and whispered that soon I would never carry another tray.

I believed him.

At our party, I poured champagne for his future partners while he introduced heiress Celeste DeLuca as the woman who had opened every door.

He kissed my forehead for cameras and told me not to embarrass him.

When he vanished upstairs, I followed with his tie in my hand, still stupid enough to think I was about to surprise my fiancé.

His suite door was half open.

Celeste was on the bed in her silk slip, and Marco’s shirt was hanging from a lamp.

Then I heard them laugh about me.

“She really paid your tuition and that casino debt?” Celeste asked.

“Every dollar,” Marco said. “She thinks sacrifice makes her wife material.”

“And the engagement?”

“Cancel it. Your father’s money is worth more than her ring.”

Lena POV

"Just one more hour, Lena," Marco murmured, his palm pressing flat against my lower back, pinning me to the service corridor wall.

His thumb hooked under the strap of my borrowed satin gown, sliding it back into place. I still wore the black canvas bartender's apron tied tight over the delicate fabric.

"After we make the engagement official tonight, you'll never serve another drink," he promised, leaning in to kiss my jaw.

I stared at our reflection in the mirrored service doors. I was twenty-three, and for three years my double shifts and tip jars had carried him through law school. Even at our engagement party, I was mixing martinis because he claimed the caterer was short-handed.

"Did you wire the last payment?" I asked, keeping my voice low.

Two months ago, Marco sat on our worn sofa, sobbing into his hands as he confessed to a thirty-eight-thousand-dollar gambling debt. I drained my savings and took out a high-interest personal loan to keep his kneecaps intact.

"It's handled," he said, smoothing my hair. "In five minutes, everyone downstairs will know you're mine. Go wash up."

He turned and disappeared through the swinging doors to greet the guests. I looked down at the twisted satin strap. His promises felt heavy, like a beautifully wrapped invoice.

Ten minutes later, I understood exactly what his promises were worth.

"I owe my start in the shipping sector to Celeste DeLuca," Marco announced to the crowd, raising his glass toward a woman dripping in diamonds and wearing a custom silk gown that cost more than my life insurance payout. "She opened every door for me."

He gestured lazily in my direction. "And, of course, to Lena. The girl who always took care of me."

The applause was polite. Thin.

Celeste glided over to our table the second Marco stepped off the stage. She didn't offer congratulations. Instead, she extended her empty champagne flute directly into my hand.

"Be a doll," Celeste said, her eyes dragging up and down my cheap dress. "You must be so used to working these rooms."

I stiffened, gripping the stem of the glass. I waited for Marco to step in.

Instead, he chuckled. "She really does pour the best vintage, Celeste."

When a photographer approached, Marco yanked me against his side by my waist, his fingers digging in a little too hard. He pressed a stiff kiss to my forehead.

"Don't let your temper ruin my networking tonight," he hissed through a flawless smile. "Play along."

I swallowed the bile rising in my throat. I set the empty glass on a passing tray and grabbed his forgotten silk tie from the back of his chair.

"I'll be right back," I muttered.

But Marco was already gone. I tracked his path out of the ballroom, watching the private elevator numbers light up, stopping on the VIP suite level.

The double doors to Suite 401 were cracked open.

A low, throaty laugh echoed from the bedroom. I pushed the heavy mahogany door inward.

Celeste sat on the edge of the king-sized bed, wearing nothing but a sheer silk camisole. Marco's dress shirt hung carelessly over the lampshade. He stood behind her, bare-chested, fastening a diamond clasp at the nape of her neck.

"Oh," Celeste purred, tilting her head to inspect me. "So this is the waitress who pays your tuition and clears your bookie tabs?"

"Stop making a scene, Lena," he said, his tone flat.

"A scene?" My voice cracked in the quiet room. "I just paid off thirty-eight thousand dollars for you. We are supposed to announce our engagement downstairs."

"You paid because you wanted to," Marco replied, stepping toward his discarded jacket to retrieve his phone. "I never promised I'd marry you just because I was grateful."

My chest seized. The three years of exhaustion, the burned hands, the late-night panic attacks—all of it reduced to a transaction he didn't even intend to honor.

I tossed his tie onto the mattress. Then I twisted the engagement ring off my finger and dropped it straight into the silver ice bucket. It hit the bottom with a sharp clink.

"Security? Yes, Suite 401. I have an unstable ex-girlfriend here harassing a VIP guest. Send someone up immediately."

Celeste crossed her legs, a vicious smirk playing on her lips. "By tomorrow morning, the press will know exactly what you are. A desperate gold digger trying to latch onto the Moretti name."

I didn't wait for the guards. I bolted down the hall, shoving open the heavy fire doors and taking the staff stairs two at a time. I just needed to get out of the hotel, away from the cameras and the humiliation.

I lost my bearings on the basement level. Pushing through an unmarked steel door, I stumbled directly into a dimly lit, smoke-filled room.

It wasn't an exit. It was a private gambling den.

Four men sat around a green felt table, counting stacks of chips. Two massive guards by the door instantly moved to block my path.

"I just need to use a phone," I said, backing up. "I'm with Marco Moretti."

The dealer at the table stopped shuffling. He reached under the counter and pulled out a leather-bound folder, flipping it open.

"Moretti," the dealer grunted. He slid a piece of paper across the felt. "Funny you should drop by. We were just about to send someone to find you."

I stared at the paper. It was a guarantee form. At the bottom, in blue ink, was my exact signature from the hotel venue contract I signed last week.

I, Lena Rivera, assume full financial responsibility for the new gambling debts incurred by Marco Moretti.

"He paid the thirty-eight thousand," I whispered, my blood turning to ice.

"He did," the dealer agreed. "Then he borrowed fifty more. Used your name as collateral."

The two guards lunged, grabbing my arms. Their grip bruised my skin instantly.

Adrenaline spiked through my veins. I twisted hard, kicking the nearest guard in the shin, and grabbed a thick-bottomed whiskey glass from a side table. I smashed it against the wooden edge of the counter.

The glass shattered, leaving a jagged, lethal point in my hand. I thrust it forward, forcing the guards to step back.

"Marco's debt," I snarled, my hand shaking but my grip iron-tight. "You go find Marco."

Behind me, the heavy steel door swung open.

The air in the room shifted instantly. The guards lowered their hands. The dealer stood up straight, his arrogant posture vanishing.

A man stepped into the smoky light. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit. On his right hand, a heavy black-gold family crest ring caught the dim overhead light.

His gaze swept the room, entirely unbothered by the shattered glass or the blood dripping from my knuckles. His eyes locked onto the silver L.R. pendant resting against my collarbone.

"She's right," the man said, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that commanded absolute silence. "Now, this debt belongs to me."
