Chapter 2

The word "father" landed like a bomb in the silent ballroom. The music faltered and died.

Every guest's gaze darted between the stunning woman in the trench coat, the pale-faced Herman Rich, and the bride, Dolores, whose perfect smile had frozen on her face. The air crackled with the intoxicating scent of scandal.

Herman's body trembled. "You're lying!" he roared, his voice cracking. He pointed a shaking finger at Adria. "Who are you? I don't know you! Security, get this crazy woman out of here!"

Caroline Rich snapped out of her shock, immediately playing the victim. She rushed to her husband's side, her voice a shrill cry. "Oh my god, who sent you? Are you trying to ruin my Dolores's wedding?"

Dolores's face had turned a blotchy, furious red. She glared at Adria with pure hatred, a look that could kill.

Adria ignored their hysterics. Her gaze shifted, moving past them to the man standing on the altar, the man who had remained impassive through it all: the groom, Hudson Davenport.

For the first time, a flicker of something—curiosity, perhaps—disturbed the cold stillness of Hudson's dark gray eyes. His gaze wasn't dismissive, but sharp and assessing, as if he were evaluating an unforeseen variable in a complex equation.

Adria met his gaze and started walking again, moving toward the altar. Her presence was so commanding that the security guards who had started to approach her instinctively stopped in their tracks.

She ascended the steps and stood directly between Dolores and Hudson, a physical barrier separating the would-be couple.

From the inner pocket of her trench coat, she produced a document. It was slightly yellowed with age but perfectly preserved. She held it up for all to see, her voice cool and steady. "I'm not here to cause trouble."

She paused, her eyes sweeping over Dolores with cold disdain. "I'm just here to take back what's mine." Another pause, longer this time. "Including this wedding... and the groom."

The hall erupted in a wave of whispers. "Who is she?" "Carlisle? That family is gone." "I thought Herman Rich only had one daughter."

An elderly guest, an old friend of the Carlisle family, squinted, studying Adria's features. He turned to his wife, his voice a shocked whisper. "My God, her eyes... they're Eleanor Carlisle's eyes."

Dolores could no longer maintain her debutante poise. "You liar!" she shrieked, lunging at Adria, her hands clawing for the document. "You're trying to ruin everything!"

Adria didn't even flinch. As Dolores's manicured nails came close, Adria simply took a small step to the side and extended her foot.

Dolores, unbalanced in her towering heels and heavy gown, tripped and went down hard. She landed in an ungraceful heap on the plush carpet, her elaborate hairstyle coming undone, her makeup streaked with tears.

Adria looked down at her, her expression devoid of pity. Only contempt. "What's yours? Do you really think stolen things belong to you?"

Herman, seeing the situation spiral out of control, rushed the stage. He tried to grab the document from Adria's hand while pleading with Hudson. "Mr. Davenport, this is a misunderstanding! She's just a lunatic!"

But Hudson ignored him. His eyes were fixed on Adria, and on the document in her hand. For the first time, he spoke. His voice was a low, resonant baritone. "What proof do you have?"

Adria handed the document to him, not Herman.

At the top of the page were two signatures: Marcus Carlisle and Arthur Davenport III-Hudson's grandfather.

It was a marriage contract, an agreement between two of New York's most powerful old-money families. It stipulated that the direct heir of the Carlisle family would marry the heir of the Davenport family.

And the beneficiary was explicitly named: Marcus Carlisle's granddaughter, Adria Carlisle.

Hudson's gaze lifted from the paper to Adria's face. "Adria Carlisle was reported dead in an accident seventeen years ago."

Adria smiled, a humorless, cutting smile. "Reports can be fabricated. Just like my father fabricated a way to remove me from my inheritance and replace me with his own daughter."

Her words were a final, fatal blow. They pierced Herman's last line of defense. He crumpled, his legs giving out from under him.

The guests gasped, the truth of the situation dawning on them. This wasn't just a disruption; it was a real-life soap opera of greed and betrayal. Their looks toward the Rich family turned from confusion to scorn.

Just then, a commanding voice cut through the murmurs from the front row. "The Davenport family recognizes this contract."

It was Hudson's father, the patriarch of the family, Arthur Davenport IV. He stood, his gaze sharp and unwavering.

Arthur walked slowly to the altar, took the document from his son's hand, and glanced at it. Then he turned to Herman. "Mr. Rich, it seems you owe us an explanation."

Sweat poured down Herman's face. He couldn't speak.

Adria watched the drama unfold with an unnerving calm. This was only the first step. Her eyes returned to Hudson, waiting for his final verdict.

Hudson's gaze was deep and unreadable. He glanced at the pathetic, sobbing Dolores on the floor, then back at the mysterious, powerful woman standing before him. After a few seconds of heavy silence, he made his decision.

Chapter 3

Hudson Davenport's silence was a heavy weight, pressing down on the entire ballroom. Dolores Rich, seeing a sliver of hope, scrambled to her feet and grabbed his trouser leg. "Hudson, you love me, don't you? We have feelings for each other! This woman is a liar!"

Hudson looked down at her, his eyes as cold and hard as granite. He slowly, deliberately, pulled his leg free from her desperate grasp.

He spoke to her for the first and last time that day. "Miss Rich, I believe there has been a misunderstanding. Our union was, from the very beginning, a business agreement."

His next words shattered her completely. "And you, clearly, are not the party named in the agreement." Dolores collapsed back onto the floor, all the color draining from her face.

Hudson turned to Adria. His dark gray eyes were impossible to read. He extended a hand. "Miss Carlisle, since you are the legal party to this contract, the wedding will proceed."

The decision stunned everyone, including Adria. She had expected a fight, a negotiation. She hadn't expected this swift, clean execution.

Arthur Davenport IV nodded in approval.

Adria looked at Hudson's outstretched hand but didn't take it. Instead, she asked a question. "Mr. Davenport, are you sure? Marrying a 'crazy woman' you just met could bring a lot of trouble."

For the first time that day, the corner of Hudson's mouth lifted in something that resembled a smile. "The Davenports don't fear trouble, Miss Carlisle. We solve it."

He countered, "And you? You went to all this trouble to get here. This is the moment you wanted, isn't it? Why hesitate now?"

Adria's ice-blue eyes met his. The air between them crackled with a silent challenge. After a few seconds, she placed her gloved hand in his large, warm one.

The contact was a jolt. She felt the heat of his palm, a stark contrast to the coldness of her own fingertips.

Herman and Caroline watched, aghast, as the scene unfolded. They tried to protest, but a single, sharp look from Arthur Davenport IV silenced them. Two of the Davenport's security guards moved to block their path.

"Clean up this mess," Arthur said to the wedding planner, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Then continue the ceremony."

Dolores, a sobbing wreck, was hauled to her feet by her equally devastated mother and escorted out of the ballroom like a dog being kicked out of a feast. Her final, venomous glare was fixed on Adria's back.

Herman was "invited" to a side room by the guards, to await his judgment after the ceremony.

The priest, after a moment of stunned confusion, received his instructions from the chief of staff. He cleared his throat, his face a mask of professional awkwardness, and tried to resume.

Adria still wore her black trench coat, a stark slash of darkness against the sea of white and pastel. But standing there on the altar, she looked more like the mistress of the house than anyone else.

Hudson did not let go of her hand. He led her to stand before the priest.

The priest looked at the bizarre new couple and stammered through the vows.

When he asked, "Do you take this man to be your husband?" Adria's response was, "I agree to execute the contract."

When he asked, "Do you take this woman to be your wife?" Hudson's reply was, "I will honor the agreement."

There was no love in their words, only the cold language of business. But it was more binding than any flowery promise.

When it came time to exchange rings, Hudson took the diamond ring meant for Dolores. It was obviously the wrong size for Adria's slender finger.

He glanced at her hand, then tossed the ring to his best man without a second thought. From his own pinky finger, he removed a heavy, antique signet ring bearing the Davenport family crest.

Without asking, he took Adria's hand and slid the ring, a symbol of Davenport male authority, onto her ring finger. It was too large, loose and heavy on her delicate hand.

"Now, you're mine," he murmured in her ear, his voice a low, possessive growl.

Adria's body went rigid. She could smell the clean, woodsy scent of his cologne, an aggressive, masculine fragrance.

She didn't pull away. Instead, she whispered back, "A temporary accessory to the contract."

The priest finally announced, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

The entire room held its breath, eager to see how this 'contract couple' would navigate the most intimate part of the ceremony.

Hudson slowly leaned in. Adria didn't move, but her eyes were wide and wary.

Just as their lips were about to touch, he stopped.

His thumb brushed lightly across her bottom lip, a fleeting, almost imperceptible touch. Then he straightened up and addressed the priest and the guests. "The ceremony is over."
