Chapter 1 of My Billionaire Husband Sold My Love, So I Bought His Empire

The lawyer's briefcase snapped open before Seraphina had even reached the microphone, and that was the first sign something was wrong.

Three hundred guests filled the ballroom of the Thorne Grand Hotel, champagne glasses lifted, waiting for the toast Seraphina had rehearsed in her head for a week. Seven years of marriage. Seven years of building Cassian Thorne into the man Forbes now called the most powerful CEO under forty. Tonight was supposed to be theirs.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Cassian said, tapping his glass, "thank you for celebrating this milestone with us."

Seraphina smiled and reached for his hand. He didn't take it.

"Cassian?"

"There's something I need to say first." His eyes didn't meet hers. They found the cameras instead three of them, positioned exactly where the light would flatter him, exactly where they'd catch every word.

A cold thread pulled tight in her stomach. "Say it after the toast."

"No," he said. "It has to be now."

The lawyer stepped forward, and that was when Seraphina saw the folder in his hands. Cream-colored. Embossed with the Thorne family seal. She'd seen a thousand contracts cross Cassian's desk in seven years she knew what that particular folder meant before he said a single word.

"Cassian, what is this?"

"This is me being honest with you," he said, "for the first time in longer than I'd like to admit."

The room had gone quiet enough that she could hear her own heartbeat. Somewhere near the back, a photographer's shutter clicked.

"I filed for divorce three weeks ago," Cassian said. "The papers are final. Your shares in Thorne International were transferred to a holding trust this morning."

Seraphina laughed a short, disbelieving sound, because surely this was some kind of joke, some twisted anniversary stunt he'd cooked up to test her, the way he used to test every deal before he signed it.

"You're not serious."

"I've never been more serious in my life."

"In front of everyone? Tonight?" Her voice cracked on the last word, and she hated herself for it. "Cassian, seven years!"

"Seven years I'll always be grateful for," he said, like he was reading from a script written by someone who'd never loved her at all. "You helped me become who I am. I won't forget that."

"Grateful." The word tasted like poison. "You're firing me from my own marriage and you want me to know you're grateful."

The crowd murmured, and someone gasped. A woman near the bar had her phone raised, already filming.

"Sera, please, let's not do this here”

"You're the one doing this here!" The words tore out of her before she could stop them, sharper than she meant, and she saw the flinch cross his face not guilt, she realized. Irritation. Like she was an inconvenience derailing his evening.

That was when Vivienne Laurent stepped out from behind the security detail, in a red dress Seraphina had never seen before, and rested one hand on Cassian's arm like she'd done it a hundred times.

The ballroom went silent again a different kind of silent.

"Cassian," Seraphina said quietly, "who is that."

"Sera "

"Who is she, Cassian?"

Vivienne answered for him, smiling with the practiced warmth of a woman who had rehearsed this exact moment. "I'm sure this is a lot to take in all at once. I'm Vivienne. I imagine Cassian's told you about me."

"He hasn't told me anything." Seraphina's pulse roared in her ears. "That seems to be a pattern tonight."

"Sera, it's not what you "

"Don't." She held up a hand, and to her own surprise, it was steady. "Don't you dare tell me what this isn't. Tell me what it is."

Cassian's jaw tightened. For one second one single second she thought she saw something crack behind his eyes. Regret, maybe. Or just the discomfort of a man who'd planned every detail of tonight except how it would feel to say it out loud.

"Vivienne and I have been together for the last year," he said. "I should have told you sooner. I'm telling you now because I want to build a future with her, and I couldn't keep living a lie."

A year.

A full year, while Seraphina sat beside his hospital bed after the merger collapse that nearly killed him. A full year, while she flew to Geneva to save his supply contracts with money from her father's estate. A full year of birthdays and business dinners and late nights convincing herself the distance between them was just extremely tiring, just the price of building an empire.

"You let me believe we were happy," she said.

"I let myself believe it too, for a while."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one I have."

The lawyer cleared his throat, sliding the folder onto the head table like this was any ordinary handoff. "Mrs. Thorne, if you'd like to review the settlement details with your counsel "

"I don't have counsel," Seraphina said. "Because until sixty seconds ago, I didn't know I needed one."

"We've structured it generously," the lawyer continued, as if she hadn't spoken. "A settlement reflecting your contributions to the company"

"My contributions." Seraphina's laugh this time had no humor in it at all. "I invested eleven million dollars of my family's money into Thorne International when the banks wouldn't touch it. I signed personal guarantees on loans that could have bankrupted my father's estate. I sat in board meetings for seven years so you could focus on product and I could handle the people who wanted to destroy you. And you're calling that a contribution, like I was an intern."

"Sera "

"Don't call me that. Not tonight."

She looked at the cameras. Every one of them was aimed directly at her face, capturing every flicker of humiliation for tomorrow's headlines. She understood, with a clarity that made her stomach turn, exactly what this was. Not a confession. A performance. Cassian hadn't ended the marriage tonight because he couldn't bear the guilt any longer.

He'd ended it here, like this, because a public ending was cleaner for him. It let him control the story before she could tell it herself.

"You planned this," she said slowly. "The venue. The cameras. Her dress matching the room. You planned every second of this."

Cassian didn't deny it. That was somehow worse than if he had.

"I needed people to see this handled with dignity," he said.

"Dignity." She stepped toward the microphone stand at the head table, and for one instant, the old instinct took over the instinct that had steadied a hundred rooms full of nervous investors, the instinct that had talked creditors off a ledge more times than she could count. If she could just get to the microphone, if she could just say what actually happened, the narrative wouldn't belong to him alone.

"Ladies and gentlemen," she began, reaching for the stand, "before anyone writes tomorrow's story, there's something you should "

The microphone went dead mid-sentence.

She tapped it. Nothing. She looked toward the sound booth and found a security guard already stepping down from the platform, radio in hand, eyes fixed anywhere but on her.

Cassian hadn't ordered it out loud. He hadn't needed to. Someone on his payroll had been watching for exactly this moment, waiting to make sure Seraphina Veyre didn't get to say a single word in her own defense.

"You cut my microphone," she said, and her voice, without amplification, still carried across the frozen ballroom. "You humiliate me in front of everyone I know, and you won't even let me respond."

Near the front table, Harold Grant Thorne International's longest-serving board member, a man who'd sat across from her at a hundred dinners rose halfway out of his chair, as if he meant to intervene. His wife pulled him back down by the sleeve. Nobody in that room was going to cross Cassian Thorne tonight, not even for the woman who'd saved half of them from ruin at one point or another.

Seraphina saw the exact moment Harold looked away. That was when she understood exactly how alone she really was.

"Sera, this isn't the place "

"You made it the place, Cassian." Her hands were shaking now, and she let them. Let everyone see it. Let the cameras capture exactly what he'd done to her, because if this was the story he wanted, she'd make sure it told the whole truth, even if it took years. "Seven years. I gave you seven years, and the last thing you're going to let me have is a microphone."

Vivienne's hand tightened, just slightly, on Cassian's arm a small, satisfied gesture, like a woman closing a deal she'd been negotiating for months.

Seraphina saw it. And in that instant, something inside her that had been bending for seven years finally, quietly, broke.

"Congratulations," she said, looking at both of them, her voice low enough that only the front tables could hear it. "You got exactly what you wanted. Everyone in this room just watched you throw away the one person who never lied to you."

She didn't wait for his answer. She turned, walked past the lawyer, past the frozen guests, past a wall of phones recording her worst moment for the world to replay tomorrow, and didn't look back once.

Behind her, she heard Cassian say her name soft, almost pleading but it didn't matter anymore. Whatever apology he thought he owed her, he'd chosen the wrong moment, the wrong room, and the wrong audience to offer it.

The cold night air hit her like a slap the moment the doors closed behind her. Somewhere behind those doors, three hundred people were already pulling out their phones, already typing the first drafts of a story that wasn't theirs to tell.

"Sera."

She turned. Rowan Valecrest stood at the edge of the valet stand, out of breath, like he'd run the length of the hotel to catch her. She hadn't even known he was inside.

"You saw."

"Everyone saw." His jaw was tight, his eyes furious in a way she'd never seen directed at anyone but Cassian. "I'm taking you home. Not to your place his security has the address memorized. Mine."

"I don't need rescuing, Rowan."

"I didn't say you did." He held the car door open anyway. "I said I'm taking you home."

She almost argued. Seven years of habit told her to smooth this over, to find the version of the evening that could still be salvaged, the way she'd smoothed over every other crisis Cassian had ever handed her. But there was no smoothing this. There was no version of tonight that ended anywhere but exactly where it had.

She got in the car.

By the time she reached the safety of Rowan's guest house, her hands had finally stopped shaking. Something colder had taken their place something that felt less like grief and more like the first cold breath before a storm.

Her phone buzzed in her clutch. A text from an unknown number, sent less than three minutes after she'd walked out of the ballroom.

You should see what's already trending. #ThorneDivorce is the top story on every finance feed in the country. He made sure of that before you even reached the door.

Seraphina stared at the screen, Rowan's voice asking if she wanted water, tea, anything, fading into background noise.

She opened the link.

The headline was already live: BILLIONAIRE CASSIAN THORNE ANNOUNCES NEW RELATIONSHIP, ENDS MARRIAGE TO LONGTIME WIFE. There was a photograph professionally shot, she realized, not a candid of Cassian and Vivienne standing exactly where they'd been standing an hour ago, timestamped from before the party had even started.

Cassian hadn't just ended their marriage tonight.

He'd built the story of her downfall before she'd even known it was coming staged the photo, briefed the reporters, cut her microphone before she could offer a single word in her own defense and by morning, the entire world would believe every syllable of it.

Seraphina set the phone face-down on the table, and for the first time since she'd watched that lawyer's folder hit the table, she stopped shaking entirely.

If Cassian Thorne wanted to write the story of tonight, fine.

She would simply make sure she wrote every chapter after it.
