Chapter 3
Last night, after I left, Mr. Duncan from the finance department stopped me in the parking lot and offered me a word of advice.
"Mrs. Miller." he said, "though it's not our place to meddle in the boss's private life, I despise shady dealings."
Aiden was young, successful, and handsome, so he had his share of admirers.
But he had never done anything out of line until now.
When Mr. Duncan mentioned Karen, I knew where she stood in Aiden's heart.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
Mr. Duncan sighed. "About half a month ago, Mr. Miller took Karen on a business trip. After they returned, she started acting like she owned the place, giving orders left and right."
"Business trip?
That was on my birthday. Aiden said he had to leave for a last-minute trip." I thought.
"Why are you only telling me this now?"
I asked, my brow furrowing as my face darkened.
Mr. Duncan awkwardly smiled and brushed some stray hair away from his face. "Mrs. Miller, there's no doubt Mr. Miller loves you, but sometimes men get frustrated.
"A man like Mr. Miller, wealthy and attractive, is always in demand.
"They say men get better with age, but what about women?
"As women age, we start to lose that youthful allure, while energetic men often find themselves drawn to younger women.
"Especially the kind of girl who knows she has a bit of charm and will do anything to climb her way up."
As I stared into Aiden's eyes, doubt started to form in my mind.
"Had he really been unfaithful?"
Aiden noticed my change in mood. He took my hand, trying to explain.
"Garcia, Karen has an elderly grandmother who's been living in a hospital for years. If Karen loses this job, she won't be able to pay her grandmother's medical bills."
I frowned at him. "What does that have to do with you?"
Aiden fell silent for a moment before replying in a soft voice. "You know that I was raised by my grandmother, too.
"Garcia, I admit I gave her that dress, but I never intended to betray you.
"You're the only one I love. Karen... I only saw a reflection of my past in her.
"Garcia, I promise nothing like this will ever happen again."
I stared at him in silence.
I didn't say a word.
I wanted to believe him, to believe he hadn't betrayed me. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him.
After all, I'd been by his side since I was eighteen years old, and what I felt for him went far beyond love.
And for the past ten years of our marriage, he had fulfilled his duties as a husband.
But my instincts told me there was more to his relationship with Karen.
Before I could say anything, Aiden's phone rang.
"Mr. Miller, Ms. Reed has been in a car accident."
Aiden immediately let go of my hand, grabbed his coat, and rushed out the door.
Chapter 4
At the hospital entrance, Karen had a bandage wrapped around her forehead.
Her eyes were closed, and she leaned quietly against the bed, her face pale as paper.
A nurse was administering her an IV while Aiden paced anxiously at the door.
She had been distracted on her way to the hospital after finding out Aiden had fired her.
That was why she ended up in a car accident.
"How is she?" Aiden asked the doctor, glancing into the room at Karen.
The doctor responded, "It's not too serious. She just hit her head. There might be a mild concussion."
"Aiden..." Karen's voice was weak as she slowly opened her eyes at the sound of his voice.
"I'm fine. Don't worry about me. It was my fault for not paying attention to the road."
She grabbed the bed's railing and struggled to sit up.
"Don't move."
Aiden quickly strode over to her and gently supported her back.
Chapter 5
News of Aiden caring for his female assistant at the hospital spread quickly.
Soon, the scandal of the special female assistant became a hot topic.
Everyone now knew the relationship between the company's president and his assistant wasn't just professional.
By evening, I went to the hospital.
Karen was lying in Aiden's arms, crying as if her heart was breaking.
"Aiden, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it.
"Please don't be angry with me, okay?"
Aiden remained silent.
Karen, her voice choked with sobs, continued, "Aiden, if you're upset, just scold me.
"You've said it yourself. When someone makes a mistake, they deserve to be scolded."
Finally, Aiden's expression softened. "Alright, just focus on getting better. We'll talk when you've recovered."
But Karen only cried harder.
"Aiden, please don't treat me like this. I'll beg Mrs. Miller to let me stay. I'll ask her not to fire me."
Standing at the door, my heart grew colder.
But still, I stepped inside.
When they heard the door, both of them turned to look at me.
"Garcia."
"Mrs. Miller."
Aiden abruptly pushed Karen's hand away and walked over to me.
"Why are you here?"
I didn't respond, simply staring at Karen.
"Here." I said, handing the dress to Karen.
"Since Ms. Reed likes my things, I'll give it to you."
Karen's already bloodless face grew even paler.
"Mrs. Miller, I'm sorry. I didn't do it on purpose.
"I beg you to forgive me."
With great effort, Karen knelt on the bed, bowing her head repeatedly toward me.
"Mrs. Miller, please don't fire me. I can't afford to lose this job."
Seeing how much Karen was struggling to speak, Aiden stepped forward to help her up. His voice was cold as he said, "Focus on recovering first. Didn't you hear me?"
I watched their little act with icy detachment.
Aiden's secretary called then, informing him that the news about him and Karen had reached some clients.
In no time, several vital clients were demanding to see him.
After hanging up, Aiden hesitated as though he wanted to say something.
But I cut him off before he could speak, "I'll take care of Ms. Reed. You can go."
Aiden's face stiffened, and he remained silent for a moment.
I frowned at him. "You and Ms. Reed are already trending. Everyone knows something's going on between you two.
"Do you really want to tell them there's nothing between you?"
Aiden looked at me for a long time before he finally spoke, "Garcia, it's not like that."
But just as he said that his phone rang again.
Aiden glanced at it, then left.
The moment he walked out the door, Karen's expression shifted.
Her voice turned sharp as she demanded, "What gives you the right to hold onto the title of Mrs. Miller? Aiden hasn't loved you in a long time."
I calmly pulled up a chair and sat down.
With a calm voice, I replied, "Because I stayed by his side when he had nothing.
"Because I am his wife."
Karen let out a cold laugh. "You only met Aiden before I did."
Ignoring her words, I continued in a steady tone, "So you're knowingly being the third party?
"You really think clinging to Aiden will get you what you want?
"That only shows how pathetically naive you are.
"You're not a threat to me because Aiden would never divorce me for you.
"You think sleeping with him gives you power over him? You should stop dreaming."
Karen's face twisted in rage as she glared at me.
Her eyes were filled with so much hate they looked like they might burst out of their sockets.
"Garcia Wilson, just wait and see!
"Watch how he'll leave you behind!"
