Chapter 2

Charlotte's POV:

I arranged the guest apartment for Ariel Fletcher, applied for the keys, made sure the cleaning staff had the room ready. I felt like a lowly stand-in.

Two days later, Bradley called again.

"Ariel's research project needs some design advice," he said excitedly. "It involves architectural elements, and your expertise would be incredibly helpful. Could you come meet us at the university's design lab this afternoon?"

My heart ached, but the habit of pleasing him kicked in, and I reluctantly agreed.

When I arrived at the lab, Bradley stood beside a large drafting table, his hand on Ariel's shoulder, talking intimately with her.

Ariel wore a soft cashmere sweater and perfectly tailored trousers, looking effortlessly elegant.

She had the same long black hair, the same intelligent eyes, the same slender figure as me.

Every detail I'd changed to please Bradley, she possessed naturally.

Bradley looked up and saw me come in. His eyes widened slightly, and his expression turned displeased. He quickly removed his hand from Ariel's shoulder.

"Charlotte," he said coldly. "You came."

"I didn't think you'd actually show up," he said, walking toward me and briefly touching my arm. "I assumed you'd be busy preparing for the competition."

I yanked my arm away, a flame of defiance igniting in my chest.

"You told me to come, Bradley," I said, my hands trembling but my voice steady. "You said I was 'irreplaceable.' Have you forgotten?"

"Of course not," he forced a smile. "It's just… this is a professional setting. I have colleagues here. We need to maintain appearances."

He gestured around the room. "Your role here is simply to provide technical advice, nothing more. Business only."

The words stung. In front of others, he'd reduced me to a mere technical assistant.

My face burned with anger. Years of sacrifice, dismissed with a flick of his wrist.

"My role?" I raised my voice. "Bradley, what am I to you, exactly? A tool? A resource?"

His eyes flashed with irritation. "Don't be emotional, Charlotte. This isn't the time for a scene. You're making trouble."

"Making trouble?" My voice shook with suppressed rage. "You bring your former student into my professional space, ask me to do behind-the-scenes work for her, and then tell me to keep it 'business only'? Bradley, what do you want from me?"

A suffocating silence fell over the lab. Curious glances turned toward us. Bradley's face flushed red. He hated public displays of emotion, especially when they involved him.

"You're being unreasonable," he said through gritted teeth, grabbing my arm again, this time more forcefully. "You always make a mountain out of a molehill."

"Overreacting?" I let out a cold laugh. "You call five years of being a replacement 'overreacting'?"

I looked him directly in the eyes, searching for a flicker of remorse, a shred of understanding. There was nothing—only coldness and calculated anger.

He released my arm and stepped back. "We'll talk later, when you've calmed down. For now, if you can't contribute, leave. I have work to do."

My heart shattered completely. His public humiliation, his total disregard for my feelings, his obvious preference for Ariel—he truly didn't care about me at all.

I suddenly remembered a conversation from early in our relationship. I'd asked him about his past, about previous girlfriends. He'd brushed it off: "None of that matters. Just superficial relationships. No one ever really understood me."

I'd believed him then, felt special, chosen. Now I understood. He'd just been waiting. Waiting for her.

He'd always presented himself as a man who valued a spiritual partner. He praised my mind, my talent, my independence. But now it was clear those qualities were secondary. What truly mattered was a face—a face that resembled someone else's.

The irony of it all was bitter beyond words. I'd prided myself on my uniqueness, my individuality. But in his eyes, I was nothing but a shadow, a matter of convenience. My pride, my dignity, my sense of self—all trampled.

Just then, Ariel—who had been quietly observing our argument—stepped forward. Her expression was calm, but something flashed in her eyes I couldn't quite read—curiosity, perhaps, or triumph.

"Professor, Mr. Bradley, is everything alright?" she asked softly, her voice angelic. She glanced at me, pausing for a second with a questioning look. "And… I'm sorry, I don't think we've been formally introduced."

I looked at Bradley, a silent plea in my eyes. I wanted him to introduce me properly, to acknowledge our relationship, to give me a shred of respect. I wanted him to say, "Ariel, this is Charlotte, my fiancée."

But he hesitated. He stammered, his gaze darting between Ariel and me, his face full of embarrassment. He opened his mouth, then closed it, unable to say the words.

My last flicker of hope died. He couldn't even acknowledge me.

A cold, hard resolve crystallized in my chest.

I extended my hand to Ariel, my voice clear and steady.

"Hello, Ariel," I said, a sardonic smile playing on my lips. "I'm Charlotte Lang. If you're wondering why we look so much alike, it's because for the past five years, I've been Bradley's replacement for you."

Chapter 3

Charlotte's POV:

At those words, Bradley snapped.

"Charlotte!" he roared, raising his hand.

I didn't flinch. I just held Ariel's gaze, refusing to look away.

Ariel's composure cracked for an instant, and she watched us with an amused expression.

"Goodbye, Ariel," I said coldly. "Enjoy your new role. But remember—it comes with quite a bit of baggage."

Then I turned and walked away from them, never looking back.

I drove home like an automaton, recalling the night he'd proposed. We'd just returned from Paris, and he'd recreated a romantic French dinner in the kitchen—candles flickering, a bottle of expensive champagne open. He'd gotten down on one knee, a small velvet box in his hand.

"Charlotte," his voice had been full of emotion, "you're the most extraordinary woman I've ever met. I can't imagine a future without you. Will you be my wife?"

I'd cried, tears of pure joy streaming down my face. I'd said yes without hesitation.

The diamond on the ring had sparkled, a symbol of a lifelong promise. He'd held me tightly and whispered, "Now everything is finally complete. Just one last piece of the puzzle."

Back then I'd thought he was talking about the wedding. Now those words cut through me like a knife.

The next few hours blurred together. I sat in the dark living room, numb and motionless.

The sun set, and the room fell into complete darkness. I didn't reach for the light. I just sat there, listening to the city's hum outside the window, feeling utterly alone.

It was late at night when the smell of alcohol preceded him. Bradley stumbled in, clumsy, kicking off his shoes and leaving them scattered by the entryway.

"Charlotte?" he mumbled, fumbling for the light. When the overhead lamp flickered on, he squinted, as if blinded by the sudden brightness.

"What are you doing sitting in the dark? Trying to scare me?" He walked over and collapsed into the armchair beside me.

"You were completely out of line today," he frowned. "You embarrassed me in front of my colleagues and Ariel."

My blood went cold. There was no remorse in his words—only shameless audacity.

"Ariel? You're worried about Ariel?"

He scoffed. "Of course I'm worried about Ariel. You made her look terrible in front of everyone. She's a sensitive person."

"You know what, Charlotte," he drawled, his words slurring slightly with drink, "you're smart, talented, beautiful. But… something's always been missing. With Ariel… it's just different. She understands me."

He closed his eyes and sighed, a smile tugging at his lips. "She's the one who's truly right for me. My muse."

A wave of humiliation burned fiercely in my chest.
