Chapter 2

After waiting anxiously for more than ten minutes, I finally received a call from Oscar.

I quickly answered the phone as if I had caught a life-saving straw.

Oscar sent me an address and asked me to pick up the antivenom myself.

The wind was howling outside, which was a sign of an impending storm.

I didn't have time to think about it too much, so I grabbed the car keys and headed out.

Lightning flashed and thunder roared, and soon it started pouring heavily.

There were no pedestrians or vehicles on the road.

I finally arrived at the address Oscar had sent me, eagerly asking for the antivenom.

Oscar frowned impatiently. "Is all you see in your eyes just the antivenom? Can't you see how miserable Betty's cat is?"

I couldn't hear anything, repeating over and over,

"Where is the antivenom?"

Because of this miserable cat, I had already lost nine families and friends.

Wasn't that enough?

Oscar seemed to be looking at a cold-hearted person, disgustedly staring at me.

"You can have the antivenom, but give me the car keys."

I finally realized his purpose.

Their car broke down halfway, and they were in a hurry to take Betty's pet to the hospital but couldn't find a car.

So they thought of me, the fool.

I felt very ironic.

The man in front of me was my boyfriend who I had been in love with for many years.

I suppressed my anger and wanted to reason with him.

"Oscar, you know my parents are in the hospital now, every minute and every second is a matter of life and death..."

Oscar's brow loosened a bit, as if he was thinking.

But the next second, Betty's voice, with a crying tone, sounded.

"Oscar, Pudding's breathing has become weak. It won't be able to hold on, right?

"I'm so scared, Oscar. I won't be able to live without it."

Oscar's umbrella covered most of Betty's head, and in her arms was a lifeless cat.

Her eye sockets were red, tears on the verge of falling, looking pitiful.

On the other hand, because I was in a hurry to get the antivenom and forgot to bring an umbrella, I was already drenched like a drowned rat, in a sorry state.

I didn't have time to wipe the rain off my face.

I instinctively grabbed his arm and pleaded, "Oscar, please, I'm begging you, give me the antivenom, okay?"

I couldn't bear the pain of losing loved ones anymore.

Oscar impatiently shook off my hand.

"I said, as long as you give me the car keys, I'll take as much antivenom as needed."

"Can't you see how poor Betty's pet is right now?"

My heart turned to ashes.

Her pet was poor, but the two living lives lying in the hospital were also poor.

Hesitating for even half a second between me and Betty was not in line with his style.

But now, let alone taking a taxi, there was not a single car on the road.

Even if I got the antivenom, how could I rush back to save them?

With my hair soaked by the rain, it was stuck to my face. Before I could even beg for mercy. I heard Oscar coldly instructing the driver to search my body for the car keys.

"If you don't give me the car keys, you won't get the antivenom, and you can't leave," he said coldly.

I widened my eyes in disbelief.

The driver was reluctant, but after all, Oscar was his boss.

Despite my desperate protests, the difference in strength between men and women was too great, and I couldn't resist.

Oscar held my car keys and was about to leave with tearful Betty.

I knelt on the ground, like a beggar, covered in mud, clutching his pants and begging humbly.

"Oscar, please... I'll kneel down and beg you, can you just send me to the hospital first? I don't take the car anymore, just send me to the hospital... please..."

Oscar mercilessly kicked me away, as if I were a lap dog.

"Don't I know that kind of snake venom? Your parents are so tough, they can hold on.

"But Betty's pet is different. Animal lives are fragile," he said, kicking away my hope along with his foot.

He had promised to give me the antivenom first.

But because of Betty's sudden appearance, he coldly threw me aside.

My nine families and friends suffered terribly from snake venom, with their lips turning blue and their deaths being extremely gruesome.

My parents were now suffering from the torment of snake venom.

Oscar held Betty's arm and walked towards my car, opening the passenger door for her with care.

"Oscar, please, take me to the hospital. Otherwise, my parents will really die. I beg you, please, considering how good they've been to you..."

From the day I brought Oscar home to meet my parents, they treated him like their own son and praised him all the time.

I wanted to get up and chase after them, but the driver held me down firmly on the ground, unable to move.

The antivenom that I desperately begged for was thrown in front of me.

"Take your antivenom and get out."

After saying that, he mercilessly drove away in my car.

When I arrived at the hospital, holding the antivenom, I was only greeted by two cold death certificates that needed to be signed.

My parents didn't make it.

They suffered for several hours before dying in agony.

I held eleven death certificates, crying so hard that I almost fainted.

Chapter 3

After handling the aftermath, my tears had run dry.

In the blink of an eye, I lost all my families and friends.

My boyfriend, however, was by the side of another woman during my darkest hour.

What I didn't expect was that just as I was about to handle the follow-up matters for my families at the hospital, I ran into Oscar, who shouldn't have been here.

He was accompanied by Betty.

Betty looked very anxious. "Oscar, do you really think the witch's method works?"

Oscar patted her back to comfort her. "Relax, it's sure to work."

I frowned and was about to turn away.

However, I heard Oscar's voice.

"Lily."

His tone was still so arrogant, "Where are your parents?"

I couldn't bring myself to face him with any emotion, so I spoke expressionlessly, "What's up?"

He furrowed his brow, seeming unhappy with my attitude, "What kind of attitude is this? Are you throwing a tantrum again?

"The antivenom's already been given to you, what's the problem now?"

Oscar stepped forward and grabbed my arm, questioning me.

Our skin touched, and the thing I loved most about him was the physical contact. But now I instinctively pushed him away.

"What's wrong with you? Let go of me!"

Oscar's hand was being held back for the first time.

He stood there for a moment, looking incredulous.

"What's gotten into you?"

I finally lost my temper and erupted in anger in front of him.

"Yes, I am crazy, I'm crazy to have been with you for so long!"

As soon as I saw Oscar, I thought of that rainy night, when I knelt before him, begging like a dog in desperation.

I thought of the eleven death notices.

Betty was still pretending to be righteous.

"Lily, calm down. You saw it that night, my cat had a sudden illness and needed to be rushed to the hospital. After all, it was the cat we had raised together before. He was just too nervous. Don't blame him."

When I heard her words, I almost burst out laughing.

"Your cat suddenly fell ill and you rushed it to the hospital, but what about my families? Eleven lives hanging in the balance in the ICU waiting for his antivenom to save them! Are they supposed to die?

"Who do you think you are? How dare you plead for him in front of me?"

The pale faces of my families and friends were still vivid in my mind.

I could see them all in my mind's eye every time I closed my eyes.

The antivenom was in the car... just a 30-minute drive.

All because of her cat's sudden illness.

If she hadn't called Oscar to take her to the hospital...

She could have taken a taxi herself.

Betty seemed startled by my outburst and began to cry.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean it, I didn't know..."

Oscar, who had looked somewhat apologetic before, immediately frowned and wrapped his arms around her.

"Lily, didn't you get the antivenom in the end? why be so mean to her? What did she do wrong?"

What did she do wrong?

In Oscar's eyes, Betty was always right and he cherished her in his heart.

I used to be jealous of her, but Oscar thought I was worrying for no reason. He said we were just friends, and I should stop being suspicious.

But how could a friend be more important than his girlfriend?

I was really tired.

I pulled back my lips in a weak smile.

"Oh, she did nothing wrong. It was all my fault."

My fault lay in not being able to see him clearly.

I didn't want to argue with them anymore. I turned around and left.

Oscar, however, noticed my unusual behavior for once and tightened his grip on my arm.

He showed rare concern for me.

"Lily, are you not feeling well?"

I had no interest in further engaging with him.

I stared at him, with no ripples in my heart.

Maybe I was already numb, or perhaps my love for him had vanished.

The person in front of me seemed like the most familiar stranger, I said in the most plain tone, "Oscar, We should break up."
