Chapter 1

"Alexander, look at me!" Clara’s voice cracked, sharp and raw. She grabbed his sleeve, pulling him back before he could take another step toward the main hall. Her breath came fast, her chest heaving against the tight bodice of her burgundy dress.

"Look at me for one second!"

Alexander stopped, but he didn't turn around completely. He stood there, tall and immaculate in his dark suit, adjusting his cuff links with steady, deliberate hands. When he finally shifted his gaze down to her, his face was like granite.

"Lower your voice, Clara," he said, his voice dropping into that quiet, heavy tone he used in the boardroom. "Half the company’s investors are out there. Don't do this here."

"I don't care about the investors!" The words blurted out, hot and stinging. Clara bit her lip, but the hurt was already overflowing. "You haven’t spoken to me all night. You walked into this venue with her. You spent the entire dinner fetching her water, holding her chair, checking her coat... while I sat three seats down like a complete stranger. I am your wife!"

Alexander let out a long, heavy exhale, pinching the bridge of his nose. He looked at her the way an exhausted manager looks at an unruly employee.

"Clara, look at her," he said, gesturing with a slow tilt of his chin toward the far side of the room. "Can't you see she's pregnant? Can't you see how fragile she is right now? She is going through a horrifying loss, and you're standing here counting how many times I pulled out a chair?"

"She is not your responsibility, Alex!" Clara stepped right into his space, her knuckles turning white as she clutched her purse. "She has her own family in Gold Coast! Why are you the one taking her to doctor appointments? Why are you answering her calls at two in the morning while I'm sleeping alone in our bed?"

"Because she has no one else right now!" Alexander’s jaw tightened, his eyes darkening with sudden irritation. He grabbed Clara’s wrists and firmly unclasped her fingers from his arm. "Where is your compassion? Where is your basic human decency? A woman is carrying a life, Clara. She’s scared, she’s grieving, and I am stepping up to help a family friend because it is the right thing to do. Are you really that cold? Are you really so self-centered that you're jealous of a pregnant woman?"

The words hit Clara right in the chest. Self-centered. Cold.

A wave of confusion washed over her, thick and suffocating. Her mind scrambled to defend herself, but the guilt was already sinking its teeth in. Was she being selfish? Was she forcing her own feelings onto a tragedy?

She looked at her husband’s stern, unyielding eyes and felt the ground completely give way beneath her feet.

"I am not jealous of her grief, Alex," Clara whispered, her voice shaking so hard the words almost lost their shape. "I am terrified of losing you. You're slipping away from me, and you won't even tell me why—"

"Alex..." A soft, trembling voice cut right through Clara’s sentence.

Evelyn was standing at the entrance of the shadowed hallway. She wore a simple cream silk dress that softly outlined her growing belly. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves, and her big, brown eyes were overflowing with tears. She took a shaky step toward them, pressing a trembling hand over her stomach.

"I'm so sorry..." Evelyn choked out, her bottom lip quivering. "I didn't mean to interrupt... I just... I couldn't breathe in there, Alex. Everyone keeps asking me about the future, and I... I don't have a future anymore. My chest hurts so bad..."

Before Clara could draw breath to speak, Alexander moved. He brushed right past Clara, his shoulder knocking into hers without a single glance. In a split second, his arms were around Evelyn. He pulled her flush against his chest, cradling the back of her head as she buried her face in his neck and sobbed.

"Shh, I've got you," Alexander murmured into her hair. His voice was low and soft—a tone Clara hadn't heard him use in months. "Take a breath, Evelyn. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."

Clara stood glued to the floor. The air trapped in her lungs turned to ice. She watched her husband stroke another woman's back, watched Evelyn’s manicured hands clutch Alexander’s jacket like he was the only source of light left in the world.

"Alexander..." Clara’s voice was barely a croak. "Let go of her."

"What on earth is going on here?!" Eleanor Vance’s sharp voice echoed down the corridor, followed by the rapid clack-clack-clack of her heels. Alexander's mother glided into the hallway, her diamond necklace flashing under the dim lights.

Directly behind her, stepping quietly out from the velvet curtains near the bar, was Uncle Julian. He didn't say a word. He just stood there, hands casually tucked into the pockets of his tailored trousers, swirling the amber liquid in his crystal glass. His eyes locked onto Clara’s tear-stained face, a subtle, unreadable smile playing on his lips as he watched the scene unfold.

Eleanor didn't ask questions. She took one look at Evelyn weeping in Alexander's arms and turned on Clara.

"Have you completely lost your mind?!" Eleanor snapped, her voice cutting through the quiet hall. "Look at the state of her! Evelyn is carrying a child, she is grieving, and you are standing here throwing a jealousy fit at a corporate gala!"

"Mother, wait—" Clara tried to speak, but Eleanor shut her down instantly. "Shut your mouth!" Eleanor stepped right into Clara's space, her eyes cold. "You ought to be ashamed of yourself. We welcomed you into the Vance family, Clara, despite your background. But you have zero class. My son is doing an honorable thing by supporting a vulnerable woman, and all you care about is your own petty ego!"

"He is my husband!" Clara’s voice broke into a desperate shriek. "He is my husband, Eleanor!"

"And he is Vance!" Eleanor countered, her tone sharp as glass. "Vance does not turn his back on people in need just because his wife is throwing a tantrum!"

Clara turned her desperate eyes to Alexander. "Alex... please. Tell her to stop. Tell her you're coming home with me."

Alexander looked up from Evelyn. His jaw was set tight, his eyes completely closed off. "Go home, Clara," Alexander said. His voice was flat. "You're making a scene. We'll talk when I get back."

The silence that followed was deafening. Clara stared at him, feeling the absolute, crushing humiliation settle into her bones. He hadn't just ignored her—he had handed her over to his mother's cruelty and walked away.

Before Clara could step back, Evelyn let out a sharp, breathless cry, clutching her belly as her knees buckled completely.

"Ah! My stomach!" Evelyn’s sharp, breathless cry cut through the air. Her face drained of all color, her body slackening as her knees gave out completely.

Alexander’s arm, already wrapped around her waist, clamped tight against her frame. He caught her weight before she hit the marble floor, dragging her flush against his chest.

"Evelyn!" Alexander’s voice cracked with panic, his face instantly pale. "Evelyn, look at me! Stay awake!"

"Look at what you’ve done!" Eleanor’s voice erupted into a hysterical scream. She rushed forward, grabbing Evelyn’s limp hand before her glare snapped over to Clara. "Are you happy now?! You rattled her with your disgusting, selfish jealousy, and now look!"

Clara stumbled backward, her hands trembling. "I…I didn't touch her, Eleanor, I was just—"

"Shut up!" Alexander snapped. His head whipped around, his eyes dark with frantic aggression. "Just shut your mouth, Clara! Can't you see she’s in pain?! Can't you see what your picking has done to her?!"

The accusation hit Clara like a physical blow, choking the breath right out of her throat.

"Don't just stand there staring!" Eleanor shouted, her voice echoing off the walls. "Go get water! Find the hotel doctor! Do something useful for once instead of destroying this family!"

"Clara, move!" Alexander barked, his jaw clenched so tight a muscle twitched in his cheek. "Tell security to clear the side exit! Move!" Clara’s legs felt like lead. She took another shaky step back, her vision blurring as tears finally spilled over her cheeks.

Before she could even turn, Alexander shifted his weight, scooping Evelyn bodily into his arms. "Frank!" Alexander shouted toward the security team at the end of the hall, brushing past Clara without a glance. "Get the SUV to the curb right now! Call the hospital!"

Eleanor rushed right after him, shouting into her phone, their frantic footsteps fading down the corridor.

As the heavy exit doors swung shut, silence slammed down over the hallway. Clara stood completely alone under the dim lights, her arms wrapped tightly around her chest as silent, ragged sobs shook her frame.

And from the shadowed velvet curtains near the bar, Uncle Julian took a slow, quiet sip of his whiskey, his dark eyes tracking Clara with absolute, silent satisfaction.

Chapter 2

The morning sun hit the master bedroom floor in pale, frozen strips, but it didn't warm the sheets.

Clara lay on her side, staring at the empty space beside her. The sheets were smooth, untouched, and cold. Alexander hadn't come home—not at midnight, not at three in the morning, not even when the sky over the Chicago skyline began to turn gray.

She pulled her phone off the nightstand, checking the screen—7:42 AM. No missed calls. No texts. She mindlessly tapped open a social media app just to drown out the silence of the massive room, but set it face-down seconds later. The screen went dark, and the suffocating quiet returned.

Downstairs, Clara went straight to the kitchen. The family’s private cook offered to take over, but Clara shook her head, pulling out the cutting board herself. She needed to do this. She needed to fix whatever had broken between them last night.

For over an hour, Clara focused every bit of her energy into preparing his favorite morning meal. She carefully chopped fresh vegetables, seasoned the eggs just the way he liked them, toasted the bread to a light golden crisp, and brewed a fresh pot of dark roast coffee. She neatly packed every portion into a sleek thermal container, wiping down the edges with a cloth.

Every single step was deliberate. It was her quiet olive branch—a way to show him that despite the harsh words and the humiliation at the gala, she was still standing by him as his wife.

She sat at the kitchen island, staring at the untouched silver thermal container. He hadn't called. No text, no update from the hospital, nothing. But Alexander never missed a day at the office—no matter how late he stayed out or how brutal the night before had been, he would be at his desk on the fiftieth floor before the market opened. He was a creature of habit like that. If he wasn't here, he was at Vance Global.

Clara picked up the container, smoothed down the front of her coat, and stepped out into the crisp morning air.

"Arthur," she called softly across the silent driveway.

The driver stepped forward, opening the door to the black Range Rover. "Good morning, Mrs. Vance. Headed to the corporate tower?"

"Yes," Clara said, settling into the warm leather seat. "He'll be at his desk by now.”

The SUV glided out of the estate gates, navigating the heavy downtown traffic. Outside, commuters wrapped in heavy winter coats hurried down Michigan Avenue under a gray sky. Clara sat in the back, her hands tightly hugging the warm thermal bag resting in her lap.

When the Range Rover pulled up to Vance Global Headquarters, the fifty-story glass tower stood cold against the horizon.

Clara walked through the revolving doors into the soaring marble lobby, her heels echoing against the floor. The security guard behind the desk nodded politely as she passed, acknowledging the legitimate Mrs. Vance. But as she walked toward the private elevator bank, she felt the quiet, lingering glances from the lower-floor staff—analysts and managers pausing their conversations as she walked past.

The elevator ride to the top floor was silent. Clara watched the digital floor numbers light up, her chest tightening with every floor they passed.

Ding.

The brass doors slid open to the executive suite.

Alexander’s head secretary, Sarah, practically jumped out of her chair. "Mrs. Vance! We... we didn't have you on the morning log."

"I brought Alexander breakfast," Clara said softly, holding up the thermal bag. "Is he in between meetings?"

Sarah’s eyes darted nervously toward the heavy double doors down the hall. "His schedule is extremely tight this morning, Mrs. Vance. The board called an emergency session—"

"It will only take a minute," Clara interrupted gently, already stepping past her.

Her heels clicked softly against the polished floor as she walked down the quiet hallway. She reached the double doors, took a slow breath to steady her shaking hands, and turned the brass handle.

She pushed the door open quietly. The words of greeting dried in her throat. The executive office was bathed in dim daylight, but Alexander wasn't sitting at his sprawling desk reviewing corporate files.

He was sitting at the private leather dining table near the floor-to-ceiling window. Spread out between two gold-rimmed plates was a fresh breakfast spread—gourmet pastries, sliced fruit, and steaming cups of tea. Sitting right across from him, draped in a warm cashmere sweater, was Evelyn. She was laughing softly, her cheeks flushed as she leaned across the table.

The silver container slipped from Clara’s fingers, crashing onto the hardwood floor with a sharp, metallic bang.

The thermal lid popped open, sending the breakfast she had spent over an hour preparing spilling across the polished floor.

The sudden noise shattered the quiet room. Alexander’s head snapped toward the door, his eyes widening in shock as he took in Clara standing at the threshold. Evelyn flinched, clutching her cashmere sweater over her chest with a small, startled gasp.

Alexander was on his feet in an instant. He didn't ask if she was alright; he marched directly toward her, his face darkening with immediate irritation.

"Clara? What on earth are you doing here?" he demanded, his voice low and harsh as he grabbed her arm to pull her further into the office, out of sight of the hallway. "Did you seriously come all the way to my office to throw a tantrum?"

Clara stared at him, her chest heaving as she looked from the spilt food on the floor to the lavish breakfast spread on his dining table. "A tantrum? Alexander, you didn't come home last night. You didn't call, you didn't text—and I come here to find you having an intimate breakfast with another woman?"

"Watch your mouth," Alexander warned, his voice laced with sharp aggression. "Evelyn had a medical panic attack after what happened at the gala last night. I stayed at the hospital until four in the morning to make sure she and the baby were stable, and I brought her here to get some food before her check-up."

"And that excuses you for ignoring your own wife?!" Clara’s voice cracked, tears of pure humiliation burning her eyes. "You left me standing alone at the Palmer House while everyone whispered behind my back! I spent my entire morning cooking for you, thinking something terrible had happened!"

Across the room, Evelyn remained seated, her chin resting softly on her hand as her dark eyes quietly tracked every second of the argument, her expression completely calm behind her fragile facade.

"That is enough, Clara!" Alexander snapped, cutting her off completely. "Look at yourself—you're causing a scene in front of my executive staff and stressing out a pregnant woman who barely survived last night! I am not going to stand here and argue with you in my own headquarters."

He pointed toward the double doors, his face rigid with unyielding authority.

"Go home. Take the driver and go back to the manor. We will talk about this tonight when I get back, if you can manage to calm down."

The dismissal hit Clara like a slap across the face. She looked at her husband, the man who had completely turned his back on her for another woman's comfort, and realized there was nothing left to say.

Without another word, Clara turned on her heel and walked out of the suite, her body trembling with a mixture of rage and grief.

She rushed down the quiet executive corridor, her vision blurred by tears. As she rounded the corner toward the private elevators, she nearly collided with a tall, broad figure stepping out of the shadows.

Uncle Julian stood near the glass wall, a tailored jacket draped over his arm and a quiet, calculating glint in his eyes. He didn't look surprised to see her in tears.

"Heading out so soon, Clara?" Julian asked smoothly, his voice dropping into a low, deceptive purr. "You look like you've seen a ghost.”

Chapter 3

"Heading out so soon, Clara?" Julian asked, his voice quiet and gentle as he stepped into the hallway near the elevators. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

Clara stopped, her hands clutching her purse tightly against her stomach. She swallowed back a lump in her throat, trying to force a brave smile, but her eyes were still rimmed red. "Uncle Julian. I... I didn't expect to see you here this morning."

Julian stepped closer, his brow furrowing with concern as he looked at her pale face. "What happened there? Why are you so upset?"

The simple gesture of kindness broke through Clara’s guard. After being yelled at, blamed, and dismissed by Alexander right in front of Evelyn, having someone in the family ask how she was doing made her throat tighten.

"It's nothing," Clara murmured, looking down at the floor as a stray tear escaped. "Alexander is just... busy."

"Busy," Julian repeated softly, letting out a small, sympathetic sigh. "Clara, you don't have to put on a brave face with me. I saw what happened at the gala last night, and I know how hard you're trying to keep things together.

It breaks my heart to see you going through all this."

Clara wiped her eyes quickly, looking up at him with vulnerable gratitude. "Thank you, Julian. That... means a lot. What brings you to headquarters today?"

"Just routine family business," Julian said, holding up a sleek leather document folder. "I brought over the quarterly reports from our family subsidiary—the ancestral real estate branch. Vance Global handles the master development oversight, so I needed Alexander’s sign-off. But seeing you like this is far more important than paperwork."

He paused, looking down at his watch before offering her a gentle smile. "Come on. Let me take you down to the cafe on the ground floor for a quick coffee. Just a few minutes to sit, catch your breath, and get something warm."

Clara shook her head softly, feeling completely emotionally drained. "I... I don't think I can do that today, Julian. My head is spinning, and even though it's barely morning, I feel like I've already had a long day. I just want to go home and lie down."

"I completely understand," Julian replied, nodding without pressing her at all. "How about lunch tomorrow instead? Let’s schedule a proper lunch for tomorrow afternoon. Give yourself today to rest and gather your thoughts."

"Tomorrow sounds nice," Clara said softly, feeling a genuine sense of relief. "Thank you."

"Of course, my dear," Julian said, pressing the elevator call button for her. "I'll send you the time and location. In fact, I'll message you on social media later today to check in on you and see how you're feeling."

The elevator doors slid open. Clara stepped inside, turning to face him.

"Rest up, Clara," Julian said with a warm nod as the brass doors began to close.

As soon as the elevator doors sealed completely, the warm smile faded from Julian’s face. He turned back toward the long executive hallway leading to Alexander's office, adjusting his cuffs with a quiet, unreadable expression.

The private elevator glided down smoothly to the executive basement parking.

Clara stepped out into the dim garage, her chest tight. She tapped Arthur’s contact on her phone, keeping her voice as steady as she could. "Arthur, I'm down in the underground bay. I'm ready to leave."

"Right away, Mrs. Vance," he replied.

Moments later, the black Range Rover pulled up alongside the curb. Arthur stepped out, opening the door for her with a quiet, respectful nod. Clara climbed into the back, leaning her head against the cold window frame as the SUV pulled up the ramp into the bright morning traffic.

Part of her wanted to tell Arthur to drive straight to Maya's place. But Maya was at work—running her art gallery in the Loop—and Clara didn't want to drag her best friend out of an important morning meeting just to watch her cry. A quiet afternoon at home felt safer.

"Take me back to the manor, Arthur," she whispered.

"Yes, ma'am."

The Gold Coast Manor was completely silent when she walked in. The household staff moved quietly through the high-ceilinged halls, but without Alexander there, the massive estate felt hollow and cold. Clara made her way up the grand staircase to the master bedroom, dropping her bag on the ottoman and kicking off her heels.

She lay back across the duvet, staring up at the ceiling. To distract herself from the lingering image of Alexander and Evelyn sitting across from each other at that dining table, Clara reached for her phone and opened her social media app.

She scrolled mindlessly through local news, fashion updates, and high-society event tags from the night before. Then, a suggested profile popped up under recent Chicago society tags: @Evelyn_Vance_.

Clara’s thumb froze over the screen.

She tapped the profile. The feed was filled with old, dark photos—moody artistic shots, black-and-white portraits, and older posts from years ago before Evelyn dropped out of sight. It was mostly quiet now, with only a few recent updates. Clara stared at the feed for a long moment, a strange knot tightening in her stomach, before sweeping her thumb upward and scrolling past it.

Before she could close the app, her phone vibrated in her hand. The screen lit up with an incoming call from Maya.

Clara swiped to answer, bringing the phone to her ear. "Maya?"

"Clara? Oh, thank god," Maya’s voice came through the speaker, sharp with concern. "I’ve been trying to get hold of you since eight this morning. Where are you? Are you okay?"

"I'm at home," Clara said softly, her voice cracking slightly as the weight of the morning came crashing back. "I... I went to Vance Global, Maya. I tried to bring him breakfast."

"You went to his office?" Maya sighed heavily over the line. "Clara... Please tell me you didn't run into her."

"She was sitting at his private dining table," Clara whispered, tears welling up in her eyes again. "Eating pastries with him. He yelled at me for throwing a scene, Maya. He told me I was stressing a pregnant woman out."

Silence fell on the other end of the line for a long second, followed by Maya taking a sharp, furious breath.

"That arrogant, ungrateful bastard," Maya snapped, her voice trembling with anger. "Clara, listen to me carefully. He is lying to you. There is something way bigger going on here than just 'taking care of his dead friend's widow.'"

Clara sat up on the bed, her breath hitching. "What do you mean?"

"I couldn't tell you last night because everything was so chaotic at the gala," Maya said, her tone dropping into a tense, deadly serious whisper. "But two days ago, my gallery handled an estate transfer for a high-end vault in the financial district. Clara... Alexander signed over a private offshore trust to Evelyn three weeks before she ever showed up at the gala. He's been moving assets behind your back for months.”
