Chapter 7
I didn’t expect to see Dante again so soon. But there he was, standing in front of me like a shadow I couldn’t shake.
He’d given me his number days ago, and I’d been too scared to use it. But now, standing in my apartment alone, with nothing but thoughts of escape swirling around, I knew I had no choice.
I dialed the number. My hands shook, but I didn’t care.
“Laura,” he said when he picked up. “You’ve made up your mind.”
I took a deep breath. “Yes. I need your help.”
“Meet me tonight. I’ll send you the address.”
I didn’t question him. I just agreed and hung up.
Later that night, I found myself standing outside a dimly lit building. My heart was racing, but my feet moved without hesitation. Dante’s world was a dangerous one, but it felt safer than the one I was in now.
When I walked inside, Dante was waiting. He didn’t smile. He didn’t need to. There was something in his eyes that told me he understood everything without needing me to say a word.
“Sit,” he said, motioning to the chair across from him.
I did as he asked, my stomach twisting.
“I’m guessing you’re here because you’ve had enough of your husband.” His voice was calm, but there was an edge to it. He knew what he was talking about.
I nodded, unable to find my voice for a moment. But when I did speak, I didn’t hold back. “Lorenzo’s not who I thought he was. He’s not the man I married.”
Dante watched me closely. “I know. He never was.”
His words hit me harder than I expected. I thought I’d be angry. I thought I’d yell, but all I felt was exhaustion. The kind of tired you get when you’ve been carrying a weight for too long.
“I don’t want to be his wife anymore. I want to disappear. I want a life of my own.”
Dante leaned back in his chair, looking thoughtful. “You’re not the first person to say that. But it’s not so simple. You can’t just vanish. Not without help.”
I looked at him, my eyes wide. “You can help me, right?”
“I can. But I need something from you, too.”
I blinked. “What?”
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he pulled out a file from the drawer beside him and slid it toward me. “I need you to get inside Lorenzo’s operation. I need you to tell me everything. All his deals, his contacts, his movements.”
I stared at the file, my mind spinning. “You want me to spy on him?”
Dante’s gaze was intense, unwavering. “I want you to help me take him down. But you’ll need to be careful. This isn’t just about you anymore.”
I felt a pit in my stomach. “What do you mean?”
“Lorenzo’s not just a shady businessman,” Dante said slowly. “He’s involved in things you don’t understand. Dangerous things. But if you help me, I’ll protect you.”
His words hung in the air, heavy with meaning. I wanted to say no, but something inside me told me I couldn’t. I was already in too deep.
I leaned forward, eyes focused on him. “What do I need to do?”
Dante smiled, but it wasn’t a friendly smile. It was the smile of someone who knew the weight of what he was asking.
“You’ll start by getting close to him again,” he said. “Pretend like nothing’s changed. Be the good wife, the one he thinks he can control.”
I nodded slowly. It was the only way.
“But I’ll be watching,” he added. “And when the time comes, I’ll make sure you’re safe. No matter what happens.”
I felt a flicker of hope in my chest. It wasn’t much, but it was something.
I couldn’t believe I was agreeing to this. Spying on Lorenzo. Helping Dante take him down. It felt like I was stepping into a world I couldn’t fully understand. But the alternative—living in that cage forever—wasn’t an option.
“I’ll do it,” I said, my voice steady despite the whirlwind of thoughts in my mind.
Dante’s eyes softened slightly. “Good. You’re smarter than you look.”
I almost smiled at the compliment, but I didn’t have the energy. Instead, I looked down at the file in front of me.
“You’ll have to give me everything you know. Every detail. Nothing is too small,” Dante said. “And you’ll need to stay calm. Lorenzo’s going to be watching you, too. Don’t make any sudden moves. Keep everything as normal as possible.”
I swallowed hard. “And if I fail?”
Dante didn’t flinch. “Then you don’t want to know what happens next.”
I nodded, the reality of what I was doing settling in.
As I stood up to leave, Dante’s voice stopped me.
“Laura.”
I turned back, my heart racing.
“You don’t need to be afraid of me,” he said, his tone quiet, almost reassuring. “I’m not like him.”
For a moment, I just stared at him. He was right. Dante wasn’t like Lorenzo. I didn’t know what it was exactly—maybe the way he listened, the way he treated me like I mattered—but he was different.
“Thank you,” I whispered, almost surprised by the sincerity in my voice.
Dante gave me a slight nod. “Just remember, I’m the one who keeps you safe. And you’re not alone in this anymore.”
With that, I turned and left.
I had no idea what the future held, but one thing was clear. Dante wasn’t just a fixer. He had a plan. A bigger plan. And I was going to be a part of it.
Chapter 8
he days blurred together, each one a tightrope walk, balancing between pretending everything was fine and secretly collecting the pieces I needed. I had to move carefully, like a thief in the night, gathering everything that could save me. But I wasn’t alone in this anymore. Dante’s words echoed in my head: “I’ll protect you.” He was the only reason I had the courage to keep going.
I sat in the small office I’d set up in my apartment, files scattered across the desk. Each document, each phone call I’d secretly recorded, each picture I’d snapped—this was my escape plan. Every illegal deal, every shady business Lorenzo was involved in. It wasn’t much yet, but it was enough to start.
I glanced at the clock. It was almost time. I needed to head to the party. I had to act like nothing was wrong, like I hadn’t spent the last few days assembling the proof that could tear Lorenzo down.
It was the same event every year—a gala that people in our world used to show off power and influence. I hated it, but it was a perfect place to gather information. The rich, the corrupt, all in one room. And tonight, I had a feeling Sienna would make her move.
When I entered the venue, I could already feel the tension in the air. People glided past me in their expensive suits and glittering gowns, laughing and drinking. Lorenzo stood by the bar, his hand casually draped around Sienna’s waist. The two of them looked perfect together—perfectly fake.
I approached them, keeping my expression neutral. Sienna’s eyes flicked over to me, and I could see the challenge in them. She knew I was slipping away, and she hated it.
“Laura,” Sienna purred, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. “So nice of you to join us.”
I forced a smile. “Wouldn’t miss it.”
Sienna didn’t let me off that easy. “I heard some rumors about you. I wonder if they’re true.” Her smile turned into something sharper, her eyes narrowing with malice.
I felt my stomach churn. She was going to try something. I braced myself.
“Rumors?” I asked, playing along.
“Yes,” she continued, her voice just loud enough for a few people to overhear. “About you and someone else. An affair, perhaps?”
I froze, but only for a second. My eyes locked onto hers. She was trying to humiliate me, trying to tear me down in front of everyone. But I wouldn’t give her that satisfaction.
Before I could say anything, a voice came from behind me.
“I don’t think that’s what happened, Sienna.”
It was Dante. He’d arrived quietly, like he always did, but his presence was impossible to ignore.
Sienna looked taken aback, but she quickly recovered. “And who might you be?”
Dante didn’t smile, didn’t even flinch. “I’m someone who knows better than to spread lies about people without proof.” His voice was calm, but there was something dangerous in it.
Sienna’s face flushed with anger, but she tried to play it cool. “I’m sure you’re just a little confused, sir. Laura here has a reputation for causing drama.”
Dante raised an eyebrow. “Is that so? Funny, because the only one causing drama here seems to be you, Sienna. I’m sure everyone around us would agree.”
The people nearby began to whisper, their attention shifting from me to Sienna. The power had shifted.
Sienna’s eyes flicked around the room, realizing her audience was growing. “I—I’m just saying what everyone’s been talking about. I heard—”
“I’m sure you did.” Dante cut her off, his voice now colder, sharper. “But you know, rumors are rarely true. And I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t want to embarrass yourself by continuing down this path, would you?”
Sienna’s lips trembled, but she stood her ground. “You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I think I know exactly what I’m talking about,” Dante said smoothly. “You, on the other hand, are about to make a fool of yourself.”
Sienna’s face turned red with rage, but she didn’t say anything else. She just stormed off, her heels clicking angrily against the marble floor. The crowd slowly returned to their conversations, but the damage had been done.
Dante’s gaze turned to me, his expression softening just a bit. “You okay?”
I nodded, still feeling the adrenaline of the moment. “Thank you,” I said quietly.
He gave me a small nod. “It’s what I’m here for.”
As we stood there, a strange sense of relief washed over me. For the first time in a long time, I felt like I wasn’t completely alone. Dante had my back, and maybe—just maybe—I could make it out of this alive.
But I couldn’t stay in this world forever.
Lorenzo had started to notice the changes in me. I could feel it in the way he watched me now, in the silence that lingered whenever he spoke to me. He knew something was off, and he wasn’t stupid.
It was only a matter of time before he caught on.
Dante must’ve known that too because he leaned in closer, his voice low. “We need to speed things up.”
I nodded. “I know.”
“I’ll take care of things,” Dante said, his eyes locked on mine. “You just keep doing what you’re doing. He won’t be able to keep you under his control for much longer.”
I felt my heart race. Dante was right. Lorenzo was slipping, and the more I learned, the more I gathered, the closer I was to the endgame.
I wasn’t going to be his wife anymore. I wasn’t going to be anyone’s pawn.
I was going to be free.
But it wasn’t going to be easy.
As I walked away, I knew this was just the beginning. The pieces were in place, but there was still so much left to do. I had to stay focused. I had to be smart. And most of all, I had to be patient.
But the end was near. I could feel it in my bones.
Chapter 9
The night Lorenzo left with Sienna felt different. I hadn’t expected it to, but it did. He hadn’t even looked at me as he walked out of the house with her, his arm around her waist like he had every right to be there. It wasn’t just the obvious—him choosing her over me—it was the cold, casual way he dismissed me. As if I didn’t matter anymore.
I stood there, watching them go, a wave of emptiness sweeping over me. It wasn’t even jealousy. I couldn’t afford to feel that anymore. What I felt was something much sharper. Anger. But more than that—resignation. Because, deep down, I knew this wasn’t the first time, and it wouldn’t be the last.
He didn’t care about me. Not really.
I walked to the window, staring out into the night. The city lights below seemed so distant, so unreachable. But as I turned away, I heard the familiar sound of a knock on the door.
It was Dante.
I wasn’t surprised. He’d become a constant in my life, a presence that never left, always there when I needed him most.
“Come in,” I called softly.
The door opened, and Dante stepped inside. His dark eyes scanned the room, and his usual calm demeanor softened when he saw me standing by the window.
“Are you okay?” His voice was quiet but steady.
I forced a smile, one I didn’t feel. “I’m fine.”
He didn’t buy it, of course.
“You don’t look fine,” Dante said, crossing the room with his usual measured steps. He didn’t ask for permission. He just moved, like he always did. He leaned against the wall, arms crossed, watching me.
“You know, I thought I’d get used to this,” I said, turning back toward the window. “The feeling of being ignored. The feeling of being invisible.”
“You’re not invisible.”
I turned to look at him. “Then why does it feel that way?”
Dante didn’t answer right away. He stepped closer, his presence filling the space between us. For a second, I thought he was going to reach out, but he didn’t. He just kept watching me, his expression unreadable.
Then he pulled out a folder from his bag, and my heart sank.
“This is why I’m here,” Dante said quietly. “You need to see this.”
I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to know. But I also knew I had to.
He laid the folder on the table and opened it. Inside were photos, documents, and notes—too many to count, but they all led to one thing: Lorenzo’s betrayal.
“He’s planning to annul your marriage,” Dante said, his voice steady. “He’s been seeing other women, including Sienna, and he plans to cut you off with nothing. Not even a penny.”
The words hit me like a slap, but I didn’t react. I couldn’t. I just stared at the pictures—Lorenzo with other women, the contracts that stated he was preparing to sever all ties with me.
“You’ve been a pawn this whole time, Laura,” Dante continued, his voice low. “And you’re about to be discarded.”
I couldn’t breathe. The suffocating reality of it all settled in my chest. All these years, I’d been nothing more than a tool, a piece in a game I didn’t even understand. Lorenzo had always seen me as expendable. But this...this was worse than I had imagined.
I looked up at Dante, feeling something in me crack. For the first time, I felt like I wasn’t just watching everything fall apart. I was part of it now.
“Why are you showing me this?” I asked, my voice shaky.
Dante’s expression softened, just slightly. “Because you need to know the truth. You need to see the man you’ve been married to for who he really is.”
I swallowed hard, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to spill. “I already know who he is.”
“Do you?” Dante’s eyes narrowed, and for the first time, I saw something different in them—something deeper, more intense. “Because I think you’re still holding onto some idea of him. An idea that doesn’t exist.”
His words cut through me. I’d been holding on, hadn’t I? Holding on to some version of Lorenzo that wasn’t real. A version of him that was never there.
Dante stepped closer, his voice lowering even more. “You deserve more than this, Laura. You deserve to be free.”
“Free?” I whispered, barely able to form the word.
“Yes.” Dante’s gaze never left mine. “You’ve spent your whole life letting others control you. First your family, then Lorenzo. But it doesn’t have to be like this. You don’t have to be the victim anymore.”
I shook my head, still unable to believe it. “I don’t know how to fight back. I’m not strong enough for this.”
Dante’s hand brushed against mine, just a light touch, but it felt like a lifeline. “You’re stronger than you think. You just need someone to show you how to fight. And I’m here to help you do that.”
For a moment, everything was still. His words hung in the air, a promise, a challenge. And I knew, deep down, that it was time to stop running. Time to stop hiding.
I looked at the folder again, at the evidence of Lorenzo’s lies, and I made a decision.
“I want out,” I said, my voice firmer than I expected.
Dante’s lips curled into a slight smile, but it was full of resolve. “Good.”
He handed me the folder. “This is just the beginning, Laura. You’re not alone anymore.”
For the first time in a long time, I felt like I was in control.
I wasn’t going to let Lorenzo destroy me. I wasn’t going to let him win.
I was going to fight back. And Dante would help me.
The man who had shown me the truth, who had given me a way out. And somehow, in the chaos of it all, I felt a spark of something I hadn’t felt in years: hope.
But this wasn’t over. Not by a long shot.
We were just getting started.
