Chapter 1 of You Blamed Me for Her Suspension, Now I Decide If You Play Again

The sound came first—a wet, violent crack that echoed inside my skull before my body even registered the impact.

One second I was cutting hard across the neutral zone, chasing a loose puck during Game Five of the Western Conference Finals. The next, two hundred and twenty pounds of defenseman caught me high, flipping my skates out from under me.

My helmet whipped back. The back of my head slammed flat against the ice.

The arena noise vanished into a high-pitched hum. Everything went black.

When the darkness shattered, I was staring at the glare of the rafters. Smelling salts burned inside my nostrils. Doc Miller was leaning over me, his hands pinned to my shoulder pads.

"Mason, stay down," Miller said, his voice sounding like it was underwater. "You were out for four seconds."

I shoved his hands off my chest and rolled onto my knees. Pain ripped through the base of my skull, but adrenaline forced me to my skates. The twenty thousand fans in the arena were roaring, but I blocked them out.

"I'm fine," I rasped, spitting ice shavings onto the rink. "Get off me."

"You took a massive hit to the back of the head," Miller argued, grabbing my jersey as I wobbled toward the bench. "We need to run protocol right now."

"We're down by one with five minutes left, and one win puts us in the League Finals," I snarled, ripping my sweater from his grip. "I am not sitting on the bench because I caught an edge."

I shoved past the trainers and stormed down the tunnel toward the locker room to get my visor swapped.

Coach stood by the double doors, arms crossed. "What happened out there, Mason? What's the score?"

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

The scoreboard had been right in front of me thirty seconds ago. I had looked at the glowing red numbers every shift. But looking at Coach's face, my mind hit a brick wall.

"It's..." I blinked hard, trying to clear the sudden static behind my eyes. "It's three to two."

Coach's expression hardened instantly. "It's four to three, Mason. We tied it before the power play." He turned his head toward the head athletic trainer. "Call the league office. Lock him in concussion protocol."

"Coach, wait—"

"You're done for tonight," Coach said flatly. "And if you don't pass the independent evaluation tomorrow morning, you're done for Game Six."

***

By nine o'clock the next morning, my head felt like a cracked engine block, but I had swallowed four Advil and drank two black coffees.

I marched down the sterile white hallway of the league's regional medical center, our general manager, Mark Caldwell, trailing two paces behind me.

"Just answer their questions, do the eye tests, and don't pick a fight," Mark muttered, checking his watch. "The league brought in an independent neurological consultant for this series. If they clear you, you skate tomorrow night. If they don't, we play Game Six without our first-line center."

"I know how the drill works," I snapped. "I do ten minutes of balance drills, read an eye chart, sign the release, and get on the team bus."

I reached the door marked *Exam Room 4*, turned the handle, and shoved it open.

"Let's get this over with," I began. "I have a morning skate in forty—"

The words died in my throat.

A woman was standing beside the examination table, her back turned as she reviewed a digital tablet. She wore navy league medical scrubs and an official black blazer. Around her neck hung an all-access league credential.

The badge caught the fluorescent light: *Dr. Tessa Ramos, Lead Independent Neurological Consultant.*

She turned around.

Her dark hair was pulled back into a neat knot. Her brown eyes were cold, sharp, and entirely steady as they locked onto mine.

Ten years.

Ten years since she had walked out of our arena with her career in pieces, and not a single trace of the hesitant graduate intern remained in the woman standing in front of me.

My jaw tightened until my teeth ground together.

"You have got to be kidding me."

Tessa didn't blink. She didn't offer a polite smile, and she didn't ask where I had been or how my season was going. She stepped over to the examination chair, pulled it out, and gestured toward the seat.

"Sit down, Mason."

Mark stepped into the room behind me, clearing his throat nervously. "Dr. Ramos, good morning. Mason took a hard hit last night, but he woke up feeling symptom-free. We're hoping to expedite the clearance process so he can join the team for morning skate."

"Mr. Caldwell, you're welcome to observe from the perimeter," Tessa said without looking at him. Her voice was steady and clinical. "The evaluation belongs to the patient."

She turned her gaze back to me. "I said sit down."

I stared at her for two seconds, debating whether to walk out, before I dropped heavily into the padded chair. The sudden movement sent a dull throb through the back of my skull, but I kept my face blank.

"Let's see the light," I said flatly.

Tessa pulled a small penlight from her pocket and stepped into my personal space. The faint scent of citrus and clean linen hit me, instantly dragging up memories I had spent a decade trying to bury.

"Look straight ahead," she instructed. "Follow the light with your eyes only. Do not move your neck."

She moved the beam slowly to the left.

I tracked it, fighting the sudden twitch in my left eye as the light crossed my field of vision. When she snapped it to the right, a sharp spike of vertigo tilted the room. My hands gripped the edges of the exam table.

She clicked the light off and made a quick note on her tablet.

"Repeat these five words after me," she said. "Apple, table, penny, jacket, green."

"Apple, table, penny, jacket, green," I repeated instantly.

"Count backward from one hundred by sevens."

"One hundred. Ninety-three. Eighty-six. Seventy-nine." I hesitated, my brain stalling on the next digit. A hot wave of frustration rose in my chest. "Seventy-two."

"Stand up, feet together, eyes closed, arms at your sides," she said, ignoring my mistake.

I stood up. The floor seemed to drop an inch beneath my sneakers. I locked my knees and closed my eyes, but within three seconds, my shoulders swayed toward the right wall. I caught myself immediately, planting my foot wide to steady my balance.

When I opened my eyes, Tessa was already typing on the screen.

"We're done," she said.

Mark stepped forward, hope flashing across his face. "So? Can he suit up for the team skate?"

Tessa set the tablet on the counter and turned to face Mark.

"His saccade tracking shows significant nystagmus. His balance testing shows active vestibular dysfunction, and his cognitive baseline deviation exceeds thirty percent from his preseason records." She delivered the verdict without a drop of hesitation. "Mason does not meet the Return-to-Play criteria. He is medically disqualified from all hockey activities."

The room seemed to freeze.

Mark's jaw dropped. "Dr. Ramos, Game Six is next. We are one win away from the League Finals. He is the captain. You can't just bench him on an eye-tracking test."

"I am not the team physician, Mr. Caldwell," Tessa said, her voice cutting through Mark's protest like a scalpel. "The league appointed me as an independent authority specifically to ensure competitive pressure does not dictate medical decisions. He has a concussion. He does not play."

I stared at her, the blood roaring in my ears.

Ten years ago, she had been an unpaid intern in our athletic training department. One word from me to the front office had ended her internship and nearly destroyed her license before her career even started.

Now, she stood under the league's authority with the absolute power to kill our entire season, and neither the general manager nor the team owner could overrule her pen.

I pushed myself up from the chair and took a step toward her, towering over the metal desk between us.

"How many careers do you need to ruin?" I asked, my voice low and venomous.

Mark flinched. The air in the room vanished.

Everyone in the organization knew what happened ten years ago with Sabrina. Everyone knew the fallout that had torn through the front office and left Tessa cast out into the cold.

Tessa didn't flinch. She didn't drop her gaze, and she didn't offer a single word of defense about the past.

Instead, she pulled a single sheet of paper from the printer, set it flat on the desk, and spun it around so the red header faced me: *LEAGUE RETURN-TO-PLAY MEDICAL DISQUALIFICATION.*

"Your career is exactly why I'm saying no," she said quietly.

She uncapped her black fountain pen. Without breaking eye contact with me, she pressed the nib to the bottom line and slashed her signature across the clearance block.

"You're out, Mason."
