Chapter 1
Town hall
"Mary, this split is merely a temporary strategy."
Mary Potter signed her name on the divorce documents without any expression, completely ignoring Ellis Hawkes’s words.
"The business is buried under a massive debt crisis. Only by separating and letting me shoulder the negative assets can I protect you and Sasha from being dragged down."
"Once this storm blows over, we'll remarry right away. You know you're the only woman I'll ever love; please wait for me."
Staring at the man she had shared a bed with for six years, Mary felt a wave of intense nausea wash over her.
Love her?
Talk is cheap.
At that exact moment, Ellis's phone, resting on the table, began to vibrate.
She caught a glimpse of the screen out of the corner of her eye and spotted a new message.
"Honey, are the divorce papers finalized? I've been waiting for you for ages..."
Even though she couldn't see the rest of the text, Mary could easily picture the kind of sickening exchange it must have been.
Mary let out a cold laugh and signed the "Divorce Registration Review and Processing Form" with a bored yawn.
"I've signed it, now it's your turn."
Ellis was taken aback by her sudden decisiveness and hesitated for a brief second before hurriedly grabbing a pen to sign his name.
The corners of his mouth curled up in a barely noticeable smirk, oozing the smug satisfaction of a successful trap.
"The paperwork is complete. I have an errand to run later, so I won't be able to drive you back."
Before he could even finish his sentence, Ellis's phone started ringing.
Mary, with her sharp eyes, caught the caller ID: My darling wife, Delilah.
She bit her lip, snatched her phone, and aimed the camera straight at Ellis’s face to answer the video call.
The next second, Delilah Norwood's exquisitely made-up face filled the screen.
She was wearing a pure white wedding gown, and the background showed the fitting room of a high-end custom bridal boutique.
She lifted her wrist, and a gold bracelet gleamed brilliantly under the store lights.
Mary recognized it instantly—it was the so-called family heirloom that Ellis’s mother had personally placed on her own wrist six years ago.
"Honey, do you think this wedding dress matches your family heirloom?"
The air in the room froze instantly.
Ellis’s face turned a deep, embarrassed shade of purplish-red, and he scrambled to snatch the phone away.
Mary let him rip the phone back, and then she delivered a ferocious slap right across his face.
She struck him with every ounce of her strength, hitting him so hard that his head jerked violently to one side.
“I have full custody of Sasha now. Don’t you dare bother us again. As for you secretly transferring our marital property, I will settle that score with you slowly.”
Leaving him with those words, she picked up her divorce certificate, spun around, and walked right out of the town hall.
More than a month ago.
That morning, Ellis, who hadn't come home all night, stepped through the front door beaming with pride, claiming he had finally found a way to solve their financial crisis.
While Ellis was taking a shower, Mary went to heat breakfast, just as his phone rang. The screen lit up with an unread message.
As if possessed, she clicked the notification open.
"Brother Hawkes, have you seen the ultrasound report yet? The baby is already six weeks along. When are you finally going to divorce that woman?"
When Mary read those words, she was completely paralyzed.
Her fingers began scrolling up through the chat history.
She saw exactly how Ellis and that woman named Delilah had plotted a fake divorce specifically to leave her entirely penniless.
She discovered that Ellis was not only targeting their joint marital assets, but also keeping an eye on her own private savings.
There were even chat logs showing the two of them mocking her behind her back, laughing about how she hadn't worked for five years, was completely out of touch with society, and would be a useless nobody after the divorce.
And then there was that ultrasound report.
Mary was utterly heartbroken, but even more than that, she felt a burning rage at being so deeply betrayed.
Her first instinct was to storm into the bathroom and confront Ellis about why he was treating her this way.
However, she forced herself to calm down by the time she reached the bathroom door.
She couldn't alert the enemy just yet.
Since Ellis had cheated on her during their marriage and was plotting against her behind her back, she absolutely could not sit idly by and wait for her own ruin.
She began secretly gathering evidence of Ellis’s infidelity and quickly discovered that he had started transferring all his assets to his mistress, Delilah Norwood, six months prior.
She went to consult a lawyer who specialized in high-stakes marital property disputes.
The lawyer told her that in cases like this, even with solid evidence, fighting for financial compensation is brutally difficult.
If the husband chooses to stall, it is common for a lawsuit to drag on for three to five years.
Even if she won, getting him to actually pay out would be a massive challenge.
More importantly, if Ellis became enraged and filed a countersuit to fight for custody of their daughter, Mary’s current unemployed and asset-less status meant she might lose custody of her little girl.
Therefore, she decided to play along and pretended to cooperate with Ellis’s so-called fake divorce scheme.
Her first reason was to legally lock down sole custody of her daughter.
Her second reason was to completely cut ties with Ellis.
One week later.
Mary had just finished giving her daughter some fever-reducing medicine when the doorbell began ringing loudly and aggressively.
Three men stood at the threshold, and the leader identified himself as a real estate agent.
“Ellis Hawkes sold this house a month ago, and the new owner wants to take possession immediately. You have to move out today.”
The agent held out a sales contract and a copy of the property deed.
The contract had been finalized a month ago, showing a transaction amount of 3.5 million dollars.
It was 300,000 dollars cheaper than the actual market value.
Ellis would rather sell the place at a low price than let the mother and daughter keep a roof over their heads.
Mary was so furious that she actually laughed out loud.
"Contract disputes are strictly civil matters. According to the law, illegal intrusion into a private residence can carry a prison sentence of up to three years. Are you really willing to lock yourselves up just for a tiny bit of commission?"
The agent waved his hand impatiently: "Cut the crap, or we'll start tossing your things out."
The two thugs backing him up took a menacing step forward.
Sasha was startled awake by the commotion. She rubbed her eyes and ran out of her room, using her tiny body to block the path in front of Mary.
"Bad guys, don’t bully my Mommy."
Mary scooped up her daughter, backed up toward the window, and suddenly slammed the window pane wide open.
"If you take one more step forward, we’ll jump right off this building and turn this place into a haunted house. The buyer spent over three million dollars to buy this house—let's see how you explain that to him then."
The real estate agent's face paled instantly, and the two thugs exchanged worried glances. None of the three dared to move another inch.
Just as the standoff froze the room, the agent’s phone began to ring.
"Mr. Locke, yes, the house is fine, we can definitely hand over the keys today..."
Mary felt an intuitive flash that the person on the other end of the line was the new homeowner. She set her daughter down, walked straight up to the agent, and ripped the phone right out of his grip.
“Mr. Locke, I am Ellis Hawkes’s ex-wife, Mary Potter.”
The line fell dead silent.
"You're a prominent businessman, so I assume you don't want any unnecessary trouble or bad press, right? Give me one month to find a new place. You can keep every piece of furniture in this house, and I'll pay you this month's rent at full market rate."
A moment later, a deep, icy male voice resonated from the speaker.
"If I still haven't received my property after one month, I don't mind taking the financial hit and letting the place become a haunted house."
With the agreement reached, Mary handed the phone back to the agent.
The moment the three men left, Mary slammed the door shut.
Her legs completely gave out, and she collapsed onto the floor.
Her daughter's tiny hand reached out to stroke Mary’s face. "Mommy, what's wrong?"
Mary leaned forward and buried her face in the warm, comforting crook of her daughter's neck.
"Mommy is fine."
By that evening, her daughter's fever had finally broken.
Mary stood by the window, staring blankly down at her phone screen.
Even though the new landlord had granted her a month's grace period, her meager savings were nowhere near enough to cover rent and basic daily living expenses.
She needed to secure a job as quickly as possible.
Right at that moment, her phone began to ring.
Chapter 2
"Mary, my mother mentioned that an incredibly wealthy businessman is urgently looking for a live-in nanny. The sole condition is that she must be able to manage his autistic son. The monthly pay is 30,000 dollars. Do you want to give it a shot?"
The moment the line connected, Nancy's urgent voice came rushing through the speaker.
Hearing that the monthly salary was 30,000 dollars, Mary Potter was definitely tempted.
"With a salary that high, I absolutely want to take it, but there's no one available to look after Sasha..."
"My mom already explained your situation to them, and they are willing to let you bring Sasha along to stay at the estate, provided you can really connect with the child. I heard that the longest any previous nanny managed to last was just a single month."
Mary hesitated for a moment before asking, "Any specific details about the employer?"
"I heard he's a young master from a collateral branch of the Locke family. He has a five-year-old son with autism, but I don't know much else. While working as a nanny might not sound prestigious, the pay is exceptional, and you get to keep Sasha right by your side. A job like this is a rare find."
"Send me the address."
After hanging up the phone, she casually searched for information on Caspian Locke.
The search results were incredibly sparse, yielding only a single piece of old gossip news.
It was an article about Caspian being linked to a female celebrity, featuring paparazzi photos of the two of them exiting a restaurant together.
Because it was a candid shot taken from afar, the image was quite blurry, yet it was still obvious that the man was exceptionally tall, wealthy, and handsome.
1 Nathan Road.
The Locke residence was not the gaudy, opulent villa one might typically picture, but rather a striking, modern, minimalist manor.
"The master gave instructions for you to see the young master first. If the boy doesn't accept you, there will be no need for you to meet with the master at all."
After delivering the message, the butler turned and led the way toward the conservatory.
Mary held her daughter's hand tightly, quickening her pace to keep up.
The greenhouse was situated right behind the main estate building, housed beneath a massive glass dome that sheltered an array of rare and precious flora.
In the center of the greenhouse stood a large sand table, and seated right beside it was a boy around five years old.
This child had to be Quentin Locke, the young master with autism.
The boy was staring intently at a peculiarly shaped object in his hands. Mary recognized it immediately as a geometric rhombic dodecahedron.
Right then, Sasha suddenly broke into short, hurried strides and ran straight toward the sand table.
Seeing this, the butler scrambled to intervene, but she was already too far ahead.
The little girl rushed right up to the boy's side, tilting her head to inspect the model in his hands, her tiny face wrinkling in deep confusion.
"Big brother, what are you playing with?"
Quentin Locke completely ignored her.
He kept his head lowered, entirely absorbed in the geometric module before him.
Undeterred by the silence, Sasha watched him for a little while longer before suddenly stretching out her tiny finger to point at a solitary piece sitting on the edge of the sand table.
"Big brother, there should be a smaller piece placed right here. You put that one in the wrong spot."
Quentin stopped moving.
He slowly lifted his head and fixed his gaze on Sasha.
He possessed remarkably beautiful, deep, obsidian-like eyes, though they were entirely devoid of any emotion.
Any other child would have surely been terrified by such an unwavering, intense stare.
But Sasha wasn't bothered at all.
She blinked her eyes, then flashed a bright grin that revealed two sweet dimples.
"Big brother, you are so handsome."
Suddenly, Quentin picked up a small twig and began tracing 3.1415926535 into the sand...
Mary understood what he was doing instantly; he was writing out the digits of pi.
Sasha tilted her head to examine the sand table, her long eyelashes fluttering.
"Big brother, did you deliberately mess up this spot because the number that belongs here is actually 5, the tenth digit of pi?"
Quentin's lips curved upward slightly, revealing a very faint smile.
That was the first time Mary had ever seen the boy show any sign of a smile.
It was a beautiful, heartwarming expression that instantly made Mary feel a wave of tenderness in her heart.
"Miss Potter."
Suddenly, a voice resonated from behind them, causing a quiet hush to fall over the entire greenhouse.
Mary turned around.
A man stood framed in the doorway. He was backlit, obscuring his facial features, yet his tall, commanding silhouette left no doubt that he was a striking man.
He walked inside, dressed in casual attire with his sleeves relaxed and rolled up, exposing his well-defined forearms.
Mary's eyes immediately caught the Patek Philippe watch on his left wrist, which she estimated to be worth at least a million dollars.
The man first cast a glance toward the two children by the sand table.
The boy still held that faint, subtle smile on his face, but he was undeniably smiling.
A wave of complex emotions flashed through the man's eyes, blending intense surprise with a sense of quiet confirmation.
Then, his gaze shifted directly onto Mary.
Now that he was closer, Mary could see his face clearly.
His features were sharply defined, looking as though they had been sculpted with a chisel, accented by a pair of narrow eyes beneath distinct double eyelids.
She had seen this face online just last night, but the real person carried an aura far more intimidating than any photograph could convey.
This man will be difficult to deal with.
The thought had barely formed in her mind when the man spoke.
“I’ve reviewed your resume; there is a notable five-year gap in your professional history.”
Caspian Locke’s voice perfectly matched his demeanor—cold, sharp, and detached.
Mary met his piercing gaze, correcting him with a tone that was neither submissive nor arrogant.
"I prefer to view it as spending five years as a full-time mother. Because of that, I have a much better understanding of how to connect with a child and meet their needs."
Caspian pursed his lips, offering no clear reaction to her answer. "And you intend to have your daughter live here with you?"
Mary nodded firmly. "If you allow it, I guarantee my performance will exceed your expectations."
Caspian fell silent.
He walked over to the sand table, dropping into a squat to look his son directly in the eye.
"Quentin, do you like this little sister?"
Quentin didn't say a word, but he gave a small, distinct nod.
Caspian stood back up and turned his attention back to Mary.
"You used to be employed at Ernst & Young?"
Mary was caught off guard, entirely unsure of where this line of questioning was heading, but she answered instinctively.
"Yes, I worked at Ernst & Young for five years before I left to have Sasha."
He narrowed his eyes slightly, turning to give an order to the butler.
“Take her to the study and provide her with all the receipts, invoices, and ledgers for the daily household expenses spanning from last year to the present day.”
He then looked squarely at Mary. "I expect to see a flawless, comprehensive financial statement on my desk tomorrow morning. If your work passes inspection, you and your daughter may stay."
"Let's go."
Caspian scooped his son up into his arms, his voice softening noticeably as he spoke to the boy.
Quentin leaned his head against his father's shoulder, but his eyes remained glued to Sasha, filled with an obvious reluctance to part.
Sasha waved her little hand at him. "Goodbye, big brother."
The study Caspian had directed her to was not his personal office, but rather a massive archive room.
The moment the door swung open, Mary honestly thought she had stepped into the wrong room.
The bookshelves lining the walls were completely devoid of books. Instead, they were packed tight with cardboard boxes, each overflowing with random receipts, statements, and bills.
On the long table positioned right in the center, a veritable mountain of account ledgers sat waiting.
The butler pointed toward the overwhelming pile on the table, his expression showing a mix of pity and an expectation to see her fail.
"All the ledger records are right there. If you find you need anything, just use the landline to call me."
With that, the door clicked shut behind him.
Mary looked at the room, swallowed by financial paperwork, and took a long, deep breath to steady herself.
Sasha looked up at her mother with a worried, anxious expression. "Mommy, do we really have to go through every single book in here?"
Mary’s eyes swept across the towering stacks of receipts, a sudden spark of professional excitement lighting up her gaze.
"We're practically there. Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work."
Chapter 3
Six o'clock in the morning.
After generating and saving the final analytical chart, Mary Potter rubbed her aching neck.
These ledgers were completely disorganized and bore several glaring signs of tampering. However, to a former top auditor from Ernst & Young like her, every single discrepancy stood out like a sore thumb.
Within the accounts of those subsidiary companies, there was a fixed monthly expense ranging from $50,000 to $200,000. Over the past two years alone, this hidden drain had accumulated to over $2 million.
Among the recipients of these payments, one specific name appeared repeatedly: Ecopark Culture.
The product description column uniformly stated "Artwork Procurement," yet there wasn't a single inventory list or delivery acceptance record to back it up.
Mary glanced over the registration details and froze in surprise.
The legal representative of Ecopark Culture was Peter Norwood.
And Peter Norwood happened to be Delilah Norwood's cousin.
"There's definitely something sketchy about this money. They funnel so much cash into art every month, but where on earth are the actual pieces?"
As she was pondering the situation, she heard a faint rustling sound near her feet.
Looking down, she saw Quentin Locke sitting quietly on the carpet right beside her chair. He was holding a tablet, his tiny face unusually serious.
"Quentin?" Mary asked softly.
Seeing that Mary had finally noticed his presence, the little guy held up the tablet and pointed to a specific folder on the screen.
Mary asked tentatively, "Do you want me to open this folder?"
Quentin nodded.
Mary tapped the screen to open it, revealing dozens of high-definition photographs.
As she scrolled through the images of crude imitations and cheap decorative paintings, a sudden flash of inspiration hit her.
Are these the actual 'artworks' recorded in the books?
She then noticed a clear 'Ecopark Culture' watermark stamped in the corner of each photo.
She abruptly looked up at Quentin.
This child was only five years old.
There was no way he could have taken these photos himself.
So the real question was, how did he manage to get his hands on them?
As if sensing her confusion, Quentin lowered his head and quickly tapped out a sentence on the tablet with his little finger.
"My program found them."
Mary’s pupils contracted slightly.
Was this little guy actually a tech prodigy?
No, none of that mattered right now.
The core question was, why was he going out of his way to help her?
She opened her mouth to ask, but when she met the little guy's silent, pleading eyes, she swallowed her questions back.
She reached out and gently ruffled his soft hair.
"Thank you, buddy. You are absolutely amazing."
The little guy lowered his head shyly and remained silent, but the subtle upturn of his lips completely gave away his happiness.
Nine o'clock in the morning.
Mary brought the fruits of her sleepless night to Caspian Locke’s office.
Caspian was currently hosting a multinational video conference, his fluent, deep British accent filling the room.
He cast a glance at her, gesturing with a hand for her to wait.
Mary stood to the side, her gaze involuntarily drifting over to him.
He wore a dark gray cashmere sweater with the top two buttons left undone, faintly revealing the sharp lines of his collarbone underneath.
When a man is completely immersed in his work, he possesses a captivating charm that makes it incredibly hard to look away.
Once the meeting concluded, Caspian closed his laptop.
"You found something?"
It wasn't an inquiry; it was a tone of absolute certainty.
Mary walked over and placed the tablet directly on the desk before him.
She tapped open the first summary chart detailing the abnormal expenditures. "I uncovered a financial loophole of more than $2 million in the records."
Then she pulled up the second chart mapping out the cash flow. "Every cent of that money traces back to Ecopark Culture."
When she opened the third timeline comparison graph, her tone grew notably serious.
“I suspect this isn't a simple case of embezzlement. Someone is systematically using the company to conduct illegal transfers of benefits.”
Finally, she brought up the gallery of photos.
"I highly recommend that you report this to the police immediately and launch an internal corporate audit."
After listening to Mary’s concise report, Caspian looked up, a distinct glimmer of appreciation surfacing in his eyes for the very first time.
He stared at her, genuinely taking stock of this woman.
She had stayed up the entire night. Even though there were faint, dark circles bruising the skin beneath her eyes, her gaze remained remarkably sharp, radiating a vibrant energy.
“You’re exceptionally capable. To pinpoint the core issue in just one night... You've probably realized by now that the rot isn't in the family's personal ledgers, but in the corporation's books.”
Hearing this, Mary's heart skipped a beat.
"You deliberately handed me the company accounts to check. Did you already know there were discrepancies?"
Caspian let out a faint smile but opted for silence.
He had known all along that the corporate accounts were compromised, but he had purposely played dumb to avoid raising alarms.
He couldn't trust the internal corporate accountants and was already planning to hire an independent third party to audit them from the outside when Mary showed up for the interview.
The moment he learned she used to be a senior auditor at Ernst & Young, he used the nanny interview as a perfect cover to test her with the books.
Mary took a deep breath, piecing it together.
"So, do you already know exactly who tampered with those ledgers?"
Instead of giving her a straight answer, Caspian countered with a proposal. "I need someone highly competent with an absolutely spotless background to help me thoroughly audit the corporate books. Are you interested?"
Mary remained quiet, neither agreeing nor declining right away.
The fact that she didn't instantly refuse meant the current offer simply wasn't enticing enough.
Caspian smoothly raised the stakes. "The monthly salary during your probation period will be $50,000. Once you transition to a full-time position, it will be $100,000, plus performance bonuses."
Mary was undeniably, completely tempted.
"Am I supposed to be a live-in nanny or your private accountant?"
"Both."
Ugh, ruthless capitalists.
Mary extended her hand across the desk. "Deal."
Caspian firmly grasped her hand. "It's a pleasure working with you."
That evening.
Mary was giving her daughter a warm bath.
"Mommy."
The little girl was splashing around in the water with her plush duck, her cheeks flushed a bright pink from the rising steam. Suddenly, she looked up at Mary.
"Are we really moving into the big house to live with big brother?"
"Yes, we are. Don't you want to go?"
The little girl nodded eagerly. "I do. I really want to play with Big Brother. He's so incredibly fast at math, way faster than me. He even promised he'd teach me how to do programming in the future."
Mary froze for a couple of seconds.
Was Quentin going to teach her daughter programming? A five-year-old child teaching another five-year-old?
"Mommy, do you think big brother and I look alike?"
Mary asked casually, keeping her tone light, "Why do you ask that, sweetie?"
"Uncle John and the others at the house said that big brother and I look just like real siblings. I really wish he were my real big brother."
You actually do have an older brother...
The words rushed to the tip of her tongue, but Mary quickly forced them back down.
Mary cupped Sasha's small, wet face in her hands, examining her features with intense scrutiny.
Sasha had bright, crescent-shaped eyes and two beautiful dimples whenever she smiled. Quentin rarely smiled, but on the rare occasion that he did...
The exact curve of his lips was identical to Sasha's.
If that other child were still alive today...
"Mommy," the little girl poked her hand, breaking her train of thought, "why did you stop talking?"
