Chapter 4
Suzanne was momentarily stunned by my question, "I just got back recently. Thought the neighborhood looked nice, so I bought the place. Didn't expect we'd be neighbors. Since we're old classmates, let's keep in touch."
She handed me a business card. I looked at it, CEO of Smitheagle PharmaTech.
So many years had passed, but Suzanne was still as impressive as ever. I kept the card and smiled at her, "Yeah, let's keep in touch."
Thinking back to the old days with Suzanne, I couldn't help but find it all amusing now. My smile softened without me realizing it.
The next day, I arrived at the hospital. But the moment I stepped into my office, I was shocked to see Barry sitting in my chair.
He looked at the wound on my forehead and smirked provocatively, "Rough night on the streets after Lilian kicked you out, huh? That injury on your head, man, you look pathetic."
He laughed and pulled out a box from his bag, "Lilian and I saw this on our trip, thought it'd be the perfect gift for you. Have a look, see if you like it."
I opened the box and saw … an ugly green shirt. I clenched the shirt, staring daggers at him.
But Barry just looked even more smug. He picked up the shirt from my hand and leaned in closer, mocking me, "This green shirt suits you perfectly. Even if Lilian knows I faked the cancer, so what? She's still gonna have my baby. She'll do whatever I tell her. She's more obedient than any dog. This hospital's profits will all be mine. She's mine to control, just like you."
Hearing this, my fists cracked from the pressure.
I swung and punched him straight in the face, "You disgusting piece of trash! Ruining someone's marriage and still running your mouth? I'll beat the crap out of you!"
Barry crumpled to the ground, holding his face in disbelief, "You hit me? Lilian won't let you get away with this!"
I sneered, grabbed his hair and was about to land another punch when Lilian suddenly barged in. Without hesitation, she grabbed a nearby chair and smashed it across my back, "Stop it, Lucas!"
My back burned with pain. I turned around to face her, only to be hit squarely in the face with a lunchbox. The sting of hot meal exploded on my skin.
Lilian glared at me viciously, "You said you're allergic to seafood, so I brought you Shepherd's Pie this time! And you repay me by beating people? Who gave you the guts to lay a hand on him!"
The sticky pastry clung to my face. My barely healed head wound split open again. But I didn't feel a thing. I stared coldly at Lilian.
I pointed to the green shirt on the ground and laughed bitterly, "Why don't you take a look at what he gave me just now? He said you cheated on me countless times and insulted you severely!"
Lilian only glanced at Barry. He quickly covered his face and pitifully showed her his injuries, "Lilian, my face really hurts. Help me bandage it, okay?"
Lilian panicked immediately, her eyes full of worry as she helped him up, "It was just a joke. Lucas, apologize to Barry!"
I stared at her coldly, "Apologize? In your dreams."
We locked eyes for a full minute before she finally pulled Barry away.
An hour later, the hospital's general meeting began.
Lilian opened the meeting with a bombshell, "After internal discussion, we've decided, Dr. Lucas violated company policy by assaulting a staff member. Effective immediately, he is terminated."

Lilian's words left everyone stunned. All eyes turned to me, filled with sympathy.
But the one who stood up first was Dr. Phoenix, my closest friend and colleague, "You're seriously going to fire Lucas? He's the star doctor of this hospital! Most of our patients are wealthy and high-profile, ninety percent of them came here because of him. If you fire him, are you out of your mind?"
As soon as Dr. Phoenix spoke, other colleagues who were close to me chimed in, "Yeah, Director, you can't fire Dr. Kentwood! He's got multiple surgeries scheduled next month, who's going to do them if he's gone?" Everyone was talking over each other.
Lilian's expression wavered. She knew exactly how important I was to this hospital. Without me, her small private OB-GYN hospital wouldn't have survived in the capital.
She glanced at Barry, then looked back at me. Her tone was full of condescension, "Lucas, I'll say it one more time, apologize to Barry. I'll consider not firing you."
I heard her and sneered again.
Barry frowned at her words, "Lilian, you're really going to let him off with just an apology? My mouth still hurts, you know!" A grown man whining in public, everyone shot him looks of disdain.
Lilian gave him a soothing look.
I watched them and laughed coldly before standing up. In her smug gaze, I said clearly, "Apologize? In your dreams! No need for you to fire me. I quit!" With that, I left the meeting room in big strides while Lilian stared after me in disbelief.
Back in my office, I started packing. I saw the wedding photo of me and Lilian on my desk. This time, without hesitation, I threw it into the trash.
That's when Lilian barged into my office. She saw the photo in the trash and screamed, "Lucas, are you crazy? What are you doing!"
Even though the trash can was filled with junk, she didn't hesitate to reach in and pull the photo out, "How could you throw away our wedding photo!"
She kept yelling at me, "Why are you throwing a tantrum again? I just asked you to apologize to Barry! I told you he was just joking! And there's nothing going on between me and Barry …" she explained impatiently.
I ignored her and handed her two documents, "A resignation letter and a divorce agreement. Sign them, Lilian."
I gave her the papers I'd prepared earlier. Her words froze in her mouth.
She grabbed the papers from my hand and then slapped me across the face, "You want a divorce?"
"I told you, there's nothing between me and Barry! Just because I'm having his baby? Just because I asked you to apologize? When did you become so petty? You're not acting like a man at all!" She went off on me, like I was the one who betrayed her.
I burst out laughing at her accusations, "If that's how you want to spin it, fine. But I can't accept my wife carrying another man's child and I won't tolerate your repeated cheating. That's why I'm divorcing you. Sign it."
