Chapter 1 of Betrayed I Married HisBrother

"Just the ivory runners for the head table, Ms. Voss, or did you want the gold thread we discussed on Tuesday?"

Valerie blinked, dragging her attention back to the woman standing in her doorway with a clipboard and the particular brand of exhausted patience only wedding planners seemed to master. "The gold thread. Leo liked the gold thread."

"Perfect. And the ice sculpture the swans, still confirmed for the reception entrance?"

"Still confirmed." Valerie managed a smile she didn't entirely feel. "Sorry, Priya. My head's somewhere else tonight."

"Every bride's head is somewhere else the night before." Priya softened, tucking the clipboard under her arm. "For what it's worth, in six years of doing this, I've never seen a groom light up the way Mr. Blackthorne does whenever your name comes up in a meeting. You landed a good one, Ms. Voss."

Valerie laughed, and it came out only slightly hollow. "I hope so."

"You get some rest. Tomorrow's going to be perfect. I promise you that."

The door clicked shut, and Valerie was alone again with the storm gathering outside her window and a knot in her stomach that refused to loosen no matter how many times she told herself it was ordinary nerves. She picked up her phone and dialed Leo's number, needing to hear his voice more than she wanted to admit even to herself.

He picked up on the third ring, and something in the background sounded like a door closing too quickly. "Hey, you. Still up?"

"Still up. Priya just left. Everything's set for tomorrow." She twisted a strand of hair around her finger, watching her own reflection in the dark window. "I was actually thinking about coming down to steal you away from whatever's keeping you in that study. We're supposed to be celebrating our last night as fiancés, not filing paperwork."

A pause, half a second too long. "I'd love that, but the investors are being difficult tonight. Some last-minute cold feet about the merger, nothing I can't handle, but it needs my full attention right now." His voice was warm, practiced, the exact register that had made her fall for him a year ago. "Stay upstairs, get some sleep. I want you glowing tomorrow, not exhausted."

"You always say that like exhaustion is a personal failing."

He laughed, and it sounded almost right. Almost. "I say it because I love you and I want tomorrow to be everything you deserve. Now go to bed, Valerie."

"Can I ask you something?" The question left her mouth before she'd fully decided to voice it.

"Anything."

"Do you ever get scared? Before something big like this. I keep waiting for the nerves to feel like excitement instead of dread, and they haven't yet."

A beat of silence that felt, in hindsight, far too calculated for a man simply reassuring his bride. "Everyone gets scared, love. It means you care. Tomorrow it'll all make sense. I promise you that."

"Love you too." The words left her mouth automatically, the way they'd left her mouth a hundred times before, but tonight they landed strange in her own ears, like a phrase she was reciting rather than feeling. "I'll see you at the altar."

The call ended before she could ask anything else, and Valerie sat with the phone still warm in her hand, staring at the dark window, trying to name the exact texture of what she was feeling. Not doubt, precisely. Something closer to a held breath she couldn't remember starting.

It's just nerves, she told herself, standing, reaching for her robe. Everyone says the night before is the hardest. But her feet carried her toward the door anyway, toward the stairs, toward the one place in the mansion that might actually settle the unease sitting low in her chest the sight of him, steady and real, in the middle of whatever crisis had stolen his attention tonight.

The mansion was too quiet for eleven at night. Staff dismissed early at Leo's request privacy, he'd said, smiling, the night before their wedding and the silence had a texture to it now that made her skin prickle as she made her way downstairs, bare feet silent on the cold marble. Rain had started against the tall windows, first a whisper and then something heavier, more insistent. His study door stood ajar at the end of the hall, gold light spilling out into the dark.

She pushed it open with a smile already forming, already rehearsing some soft joke about working brides and workaholic grooms.

The smile didn't survive what she found.

The laptop on his desk sat open, documents scattered across the surface like they'd been dropped in a hurry. A hidden panel in the bookshelf the one Leo always joked was for boring contracts stood cracked open, a safe visible behind it, gutted. Her name sat on top of the nearest stack of papers, and something about seeing it printed there, formal and cold, made her stomach drop before her mind had even caught up.

She picked up the page. A transfer of ownership. Her family's entire estate the trusts, the land, three generations of everything her grandparents had built signed over in forged signatures dated three days from now. Hers. Her father's. Neither of them had signed anything.

This has to be a mistake.

She kept reading anyway, because some part of her already knew it wasn't. Beneath the transfer sat legal frameworks pinning a money-laundering scheme squarely on her father's company. Wire transfers to accounts she'd never heard of. Names of shell entities registered in jurisdictions she couldn't place, each one connected by a thin, deliberate trail back to accounts bearing the Blackthorne name.

An open folder labeled Post-Honeymoon Contingency she clicked it before she could stop herself, and found tide charts for a private stretch of coastline in Santorini, notes on currents, a plan dressed up in the sterile language of logistics for something that was very clearly not logistics at all.

Her hands were shaking too hard to keep scrolling. She clicked the audio file instead, some masochistic need to hear it in his own voice before she'd let herself fully believe it.

"After the honeymoon, make it clean." Leo's voice, warm and smooth, the exact register he used for toasts and interviews. "She disappears, the transfers go through, and the Voss name gets buried under enough scandal that nobody looks twice. Her father won't survive what's coming for the company either two birds, one stone , and nobody left to ask questions."

A second voice, rougher, spoke back. "And if she suspects something before the wedding?"

"She won't." Leo, certain, almost bored by the question. "She trusts me completely. That's the whole point of a year of work, Marcus. She'll walk down that aisle smiling."

The second voice laughed. Valerie's hand flew to her mouth, the sound that wanted out of her throat dying somewhere behind her palm.

He's going to kill my father too.

The thought arrived so completely formed it startled her out of the paralysis. Her body understood what to do before her mind fully caught up she yanked the flash drive from the open safe, shoved it deep into her robe pocket, and looked around the study for anything else that might matter later, if there was a later.

Footsteps. Familiar, unhurried, coming down the hallway.

"Valerie?" Leo's voice drifted closer, warm on the surface, threaded underneath with something she'd never noticed before tonight. "Baby, you in here? I thought I told you to stay upstairs."

"Just grabbing a book," she called back, astonished at how steady her own voice sounded, some animal instinct for survival overriding the terror flooding every part of her. "I couldn't sleep."

"I'll come find you. Give me five minutes." Closer now. Too close. The floorboard just outside the study door creaked under his weight, and Valerie's entire body went rigid, every instinct screaming at her to move, to think, to do anything except stand frozen holding evidence of her own planned murder.

"Actually," she called out, forcing brightness into her voice she didn't feel anywhere in her body, "I found what I needed. Heading back up now. Don't stay too late, okay?"

"Wouldn't dream of it." His voice had softened again, convincingly enough that for one disorienting half-second she almost believed the last ten minutes hadn't happened at all. Almost.

There was no version of the next thirty seconds where she stood in this study and let him find her holding his own confession in her hands. She lunged for the tall window instead, fingers fumbling at the latch until it gave. Rain and wind slammed into her the second it opened, and she didn't hesitate one leg over the sill, then the other, dropping onto the wet stone terrace below just as she heard the study door swing fully open behind her.

"Valerie!" His voice had changed now, all warmth gone, something sharper and more dangerous chasing her name out into the storm.

She ran.

The lawn was already slick, mud sucking at her bare feet as she sprinted for the gate where she'd left her car earlier that evening. Thunder cracked somewhere overhead. Behind her, she heard the study window bang open, Leo's voice shouting something into the rain that the wind tore apart before it reached her.

She reached the car, wrenched the door open, and threw herself inside soaked to the skin, shaking so hard the key nearly slipped from her fingers. The engine caught on the second try. No headlights she didn't dare, not yet. Gravel spit under the tires as she tore down the private drive, the mansion shrinking in her mirror, every window still lit like nothing inside it had just tried to end her life.

My father. I have to warn him. But calling now, with Leo's reach into every corner of the city, might be exactly the thing that got her father killed faster instead of slower. She had no plan. She had a flash drive digging into her hip and a car with a quarter tank of gas and absolutely nowhere in the world that felt safe enough to stop.

The city blurred past in sheets of rain, her wipers useless against the volume of it. She didn't choose the direction so much as let the car choose it for her, turn after turn carrying her further from the manicured streets of Leo's world and into something rougher cracked pavement, shuttered storefronts, neon signs flickering advertisements for things nobody discussed in daylight.

Good, she thought, half hysterical. Let it be somewhere he'd never think to look.

Her hands wouldn't stop shaking on the wheel. Every headlight behind her in the mirror felt like a verdict. She kept replaying the audio file, Leo's voice looping in her skull nobody left to ask questions until the words stopped sounding like language and started sounding like a countdown. She thought about pulling over, finding a payphone, calling someone, anyone, but every plan collapsed under the same question: who could she possibly call who wasn't already inside Leo's reach. Her father's lawyer answered to Leo's board. Her own security detail had been hired through Leo's company. There was no clean line left in her life that didn't eventually lead back to him.

The rain thickened without warning, visibility collapsing to almost nothing beyond the hood of the car. Valerie eased her foot toward the brake, some distant, rational sliver of her mind finally catching up to how fast she'd been driving.

Too late.

The tires caught a slick of oil-black water pooling across the cracked asphalt, and the back end of the car swung out from under her with no warning at all. She wrenched the wheel instinctively, overcorrected, felt the entire vehicle shudder as it fishtailed across two empty lanes toward the unlit mouth of the industrial district.

The last thing she saw clearly, before the world tilted sideways, was a wall of corrugated steel warehouses rushing at her.
