Chapter 2
For three days, Ethan wore the mask of a saint.
He woke up early every morning, plating my favorite avocado toast with agonizing precision on the kitchen island. He texted me hourly from the office. He even shoved his phone in my face on Tuesday evening as soon as he walked through the door.
"Look," he said, swiping through his empty contact list. "Victoria is gone. Blocked on everything. I swear to you, Bella, it is over."
He booked the corner booth at Le Petit Bistro, the French place I mentioned in passing months ago.
"We need to focus on us," he whispered over the candlelight, dropping a piece of roasted duck onto my plate. "Just you and me. We are going to fix this."
I chewed the food. It tasted like ash. I wanted to believe the warmth in his eyes, but the phantom echo of his voice calling another woman a dirty slut kept ringing in my ears.
Then came the fourth night.
The shower ran in the master bathroom, the rushing water masking the sound of my footsteps. I grabbed his wool coat from the living room sofa to hang it in the hall closet. A heavy weight swung in the left pocket, thumping hard against my thigh.
I reached inside. My fingers brushed cold metal.
I pulled out a phone. It was an older model, encased in matte black plastic. Ethan’s actual phone sat on the kitchen counter, plugged into the charger.
My pulse pounded against my ribs. I tapped the screen. A passcode prompt flashed in the dim light of the living room.
I typed his birthday. Incorrect.
I typed our anniversary. Incorrect.
A memory surfaced. Two years ago, Ethan introduced Victoria at a company gala as his new marketing director. I had found her social media later that night out of curiosity. May fourteenth. She threw a massive yacht party for her birthday.
My thumb hovered over the glass. I typed 0-5-1-4.
The screen unlocked.
I clicked the phone app. The top log showed an outgoing call to a single initial: *V* exactly one hour ago. Duration: twenty-seven minutes. He had texted me an hour ago, claiming he was stuck in gridlock traffic.
I opened the messages. The screen filled with texts sent today.
*V: Wanted to fuck you during the board meeting.*
*V: Is your wife still playing the victim?*
*V: Want to hear you say my name on the phone tonight while thinking of me masturbating.*
My knees gave out. I sank onto the edge of the coffee table, my nails digging into the hard casing of the phone. I scrolled up. The messages stretched back for months.
*Ethan: Yes, Mommy.*
*V: Good dog.*
A fresh wave of nausea hit me. I forced my eyes to read the next exchange.
*Ethan: I can't stand looking at her naked anymore. She’s letting herself go. There's too much fat on her waist.*
*V: Throw her away then. You have something better to use now.*
I did not cry. The tears from four nights ago were completely gone, replaced by a cold, hollow void in my chest. I pulled my own phone from my pocket, opened the camera, and snapped photos of every single message. Every timestamp. Every filthy word.
The bathroom door clicked open.
The shower stopped. Ethan strolled into the living room, a towel wrapped around his waist, whistling a cheerful tune. He froze.
His eyes locked onto the black phone in my hand. The blood drained from his face, leaving his skin a sickly gray.
"Bella," he croaked.
"Mommy?" I asked, my voice flat. "Good dog?"
He lunged forward, dropping to his knees right in front of me. He grabbed my wrists, his fingers trembling violently.
"It is a sickness," he blurted out, tears instantly welling in his eyes. "I have a problem, Bella. I need therapy. I did not mean any of it!"
"You complained about my body."
"She manipulated me! She makes me say those things!" He sobbed, burying his wet face against my knees. "I am a monster. I know I am. But I am trying to fix it. I kept the phone to tell her it was over!"
"You talked to her for twenty-seven minutes on your way home."
"I was ending it!"
I stared down at the top of his wet head. "She asked if I was still playing the victim."
He flinched. The crying stopped abruptly. He lifted his head. The tears were still there, but the panic in his eyes vanished, replaced by a hard, calculating glare.
He let go of my wrists and stood up. He tightened the towel around his waist and looked down at me.
"So what?" he asked. His voice dropped an octave, devoid of any warmth.
I blinked. "Excuse me?"
"I said, so what?" He crossed his arms over his bare chest. "You found the burner phone. You read the texts. Congratulations, Bella. You are a detective. Now what are you going to do about it?"
"I am leaving you."
Ethan let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Leaving me? Where to go?"
I stood up, gripping the phone tightly. "Anywhere away from you."
He stepped closer, towering over me. "Let us be realistic here. You are a housewife. You have not worked in eleven years. You have no job. You have no savings. The cars are in my name. The house is in my name. My company pays for everything you eat, wear, and use."
"I dropped out of my master's program to support your startup," I said.
"And I paid you back by giving you a mansion," he fired back. "You have not lifted a finger to earn a paycheck since. You think anyone else is going to put up with a boring, aging housewife? I am the best thing that will ever happen to you."
"You think I am trapped."
"I know you are," he sneered. He snatched the black phone out of my hand. "You think you can just walk away? You do not have the spine for it."
"Listen to me," Ethan said, pointing at my face. "I provide a great life for you. If I want to blow off some steam with a woman who actually takes care of her body, I will. Look at the big picture, Bella. Look at everything I give you."
I remained completely silent.
"I will not file for divorce," he continued, his tone turning magnanimous. "For the sake of the last eleven years, I will let you stay. Just keep the house clean, keep dinner on the table, and stop snooping through my things. We can pretend none of this happened."
He waited for me to scream. He waited for me to cry.
I just turned around.
"Where are you going?" he snapped.
"To sleep."
I walked down the hallway, my bare feet silent against the hardwood. I stepped into the guest bedroom and closed the door. The lock clicked into place with a sharp snap.
"You will get over it by morning!" Ethan shouted from the living room. "You always do!"
I walked over to the edge of the twin bed and sat down in the dark. My hands were not shaking anymore. My heart was not racing. The eleven years of love and devotion I had poured into that man shattered into a million irreparable pieces on the floor.
I picked up my phone. I scrolled past my contacts, past the local friends I made through Ethan, past the wives of his business partners. I opened the dialer.
My fingers moved on memory alone, punching in an international number I had not used in a decade.
The line rang twice.
"Hello?" a man's voice answered.
"Dad," I said.
A sharp intake of air echoed through the speaker. The silence stretched for three agonizing seconds.
"My dear Bella," Arthur said. His voice trembled with a heavily suppressed, frantic excitement. "After all these years... are you finally willing to come back?"
"Yes," I whispered into the dark. "I am coming home."
Chapter 3
Ethan yanked his suit jacket from the dining chair and shoved his arms into the sleeves. He marched across the kitchen tiles and pointed a finger inches from my nose.
"Keep your mouth shut today," he ordered.
I stared at his polished leather shoes.
"Did you hear me, Bella? Do not say a single word to anyone about last night."
"Or what?" I asked, keeping my voice flat.
"Or I will throw you out on the street," he snapped. "If you start spreading rumors and ruin my reputation with the board, you are done. You have absolutely nothing without me."
"I helped build your company."
Ethan laughed. A harsh, ugly sound. "You made coffee and ordered office supplies a decade ago. Do not forget your place. You are just a housewife. Who pays for your food? Who pays for your clothes? Me."
"I am fully aware of who pays the bills, Ethan."
"Then act like it. Be grateful."
He grabbed his briefcase and slammed the front door.
Hours later, the bell above the café door chimed. I walked into the room and saw Thomas stand up from the corner booth. He wore a crisp gray suit, but his shoulders slumped heavily.
"Ma’am," he said. His voice cracked.
I slid into the booth across from him. "Hello, Thomas. It has been a long time."
Tears immediately pooled in the old man's eyes. He pulled a pressed handkerchief from his pocket and dabbed his cheeks. "Mr. Langford sent me. He is heartbroken, Ma’am. The whole family misses you terribly."
"He made it very clear he never wanted to see me again," I said.
"He regrets the harsh words he said to you," Thomas pleaded. "He told me to tell you he forgives your ignorance."
My chest tightened. Eleven years ago, my father stood in his mahogany study and yelled until his face turned purple.
*That man is garbage,* my father had screamed, slamming his fist on the desk. *He only sees dollars. Every sweet word he feeds you is a calculated lie.*
*You do not know him!* I yelled back. *I am leaving. I will drop the family name right now!*
We finally struck a deal. My father handed over a massive sum of money to fund Ethan's tech startup. In exchange, I swore to bury my true identity. I could never tell Ethan I was a Langford. I could never touch my family's wealth or connections again.
I agreed. I loved Ethan enough to erase my own name. I loved him enough to empty my bank accounts when he was broke, to support him without ay regret.
"He knows he was harsh," Thomas added, his hands trembling on the table. "But he only wanted to protect you from a man who did not value you."
"He was right," I admitted, the words tasting like ash. "He was right about everything."
"Mr. Langford wants you home," Thomas said, leaning over the table. "When will you return to the family?"
"Soon," I said. "Tell him I am coming back."
"Will you need a car sent for you, Ma’am?"
"No. I will handle my own exit."
The sun had completely set by the time I arrived back at the house. The driveway was empty. Ethan was still out.
I walked into the master bedroom. The bedsheets were a tangled, wrinkled mess. I needed to pack. I opened the bottom drawer of the closet to grab a duffel bag for my clothes.
My hand froze in mid-air.
A pair of black leather handcuffs rested on top of my folded sweaters. Underneath lay a pink vibrator, a braided leather whip, and one massive silicone dildo.
My stomach violently lurched. I clamped a hand over my mouth, fighting the urge to vomit on the carpet.
I grabbed a heavy-duty trash bag from the kitchen. I marched back and dumped every single toy inside. I hauled the bag out the back door and tossed it into the outside garbage bins. I spent the next hour scrubbing the bedroom nightstands and dressers with bleach. I stripped the mattress, threw the contaminated sheets into the washing machine, and locked the master bedroom door from the outside.
I retreated to the guest room and crawled under the thin quilt. I planned to leave at dawn.
A sharp thump woke me.
I sat up. The digital clock read two in the morning. A sliver of yellow light bled under the guest room door.
*Slap. Slap. Slap.*
The wet, heavy sound of flesh hitting flesh echoed down the hallway. Low, guttural panting followed.
I slipped out of bed and crept to the door. I opened it just a crack.
"Deeper, Ethan," Victoria moaned. Her voice was sickeningly sweet and loud. "Yes, right there. Ram yourself right into my body."
Ethan let out a rough laugh. "You like how my dick feels inside you, Victoria?"
"It feels so fucking good," she gasped. "Will your miserable wife go crazy if we wake her up?"
"Who gives a fuck about her?" Ethan grunted. "She is probably dead asleep. Spread your legs wider. I want to fuck you harder."
I pressed my face near the gap in the wood.
Victoria straddled Ethan on the living room sofa. Her back faced me. Her crisp white dress shirt was unbuttoned and shoved down to her waist, exposing her bare spine. She bounced up and down, taking his entire length.
Ethan gripped her hips with both hands. His fingers dug into her skin as he thrust upward with brutal, rapid force. The wet slapping of their bodies filled the entire room.
"Look at my tits," Victoria demanded.
"I'm looking," Ethan panted. "You are so fucking wet for me. I am going to fill you up."
"Do it," Victoria shrieked. "Breed me right here on her fucking sofa!"
They did not lower their voices. They did not check the hallway. They simply did not care if I heard them.
I stood in the shadows. I dug my fingernails into my palms. The skin broke. Warm blood seeped into the creases of my hands, but I did not feel the pain.
I watched my husband fuck another woman in our home.
I stepped back and silently pushed the guest room door shut. I leaned my spine against the solid wood.
The marriage was completely dead.
And starting tomorrow, Ethan was going to learn exactly what happens when you cross a Langford.
