Chapter 1

I washed my hands of blood and gave up my undisputed underworld throne to build my wife, Lucia, a pristine corporate empire.

But tonight, I caught her male secretary breaking into my encrypted mafia files.

Instead of punishing the rat for breaching Omertà, Lucia shielded him behind her back and demanded I apologize to him.

"You are acting like a street thug, not a husband."

She called my mafia heritage a toxic paranoia and threatened to freeze my access to the very accounts I created.

When the secretary shattered my late mother's priceless emerald heirloom, she protected him again, telling me to stop acting like a savage over a piece of jewelry.

She even stood by while he mocked the unspeakable torture I had willingly endured in a cartel basement years ago just to secure her safe release.

For five long years, I played the quiet, supportive husband, taking bullets and laundering funds to give her a legitimate crown.

Yet she chose to hand the keys of our empire to a treacherous parasite, dismissing the blood I spilled for her as dirt.

I looked at the woman I had once sworn an eternal blood oath to protect, feeling the last thread of my humanity snap.

I felt no grief, only a profound and cold clarity as I realized my sacrifices meant absolutely nothing.

"Our blood oath is dead, Lucia."

I signed the annulment papers, liquidated every cent of the blood money backing her company, and threw her to the wolves.

Chapter 1

Vincenzo POV

Sitting in the interrogation room of the precinct, I observed how the table's cold condensation left a damp film on my forearm. I casually wiped a speck of drying blood off my knuckles.

I am Vincenzo Salvatore, the heir to the largest Cosa Nostra syndicate on the East Coast, a man who had once ended fifteen rival bosses in a single, blood-soaked night to crown his wife as a legitimate queen.

I watched the second hand on the wall clock complete nine hundred circuits. I did not feel the chill; I merely registered it as a condition of the room.

If she walked through that steel door and demanded I kneel to the rat who had just tried to steal my family's blood legacy, I would have to slaughter everyone she loved before sunrise.

I had given up my unchallenged authority in the underworld, washing my hands of blood to build Lucia a pristine corporate empire using my late mother's illicit funds.

I had played the role of a quiet, supportive husband for five long years.

Tonight, however, I caught her male secretary, Julian, breaking into my private encrypted files, searching for the Salvatore family's offshore accounts.

That was a direct, unforgivable breach of Omertà.

In the old days, I would have put a hollow-point bullet between his eyes and dumped his weighted body into the river.

Instead, I had my men drag him down to the precinct as a warning, handcuffed to a streetlamp outside while I waited for my wife to realize the treacherous snake she was harboring.

The heavy metal door swung open on a groaning hinge.

Lucia stood in the threshold draped in her designer trench coat, her eyes blazing with a familiar anger-but not at the man who had betrayed us.

Her disgust was a palpable thing, tightening the corners of her mouth and narrowing her gaze.

"Release Julian, or I am freezing all access to the family accounts."

Her voice was sharp, and the bare concrete walls did nothing to soften its edge.

"You are making a spectacle of us and ruining the company's reputation."

I stood up slowly, my shadow falling across her completely.

I looked down into the dark eyes of the woman I had once sworn an eternal blood oath to protect.

"He was digging into the restricted Salvatore archives, Lucia."

I kept my voice low, a vibration felt more than heard.

"He is a rat, and I want our marriage pact severed tonight if you refuse to handle this according to our laws."

Lucia let out a short, brittle laugh, dismissing my authority completely.

"You are irrational and paranoid."

She turned on her stiletto heel and walked out of the interrogation room, her steps echoing toward the armored Maserati waiting at the curb.

I followed her out into the biting night air.

I took the passenger seat and rolled down the window, letting the wind cut across my face, though it did little to cool the heat behind my eyes.

As she started the ignition, I saw my Capo standing near the precinct steps through the side mirror. I gave a single, sharp nod. The Capo immediately grabbed Julian by the collar. Julian stumbled across the pavement, shoved forward by my men.

He looked pathetic, his designer suit wrinkled, playing the role of the innocent, terrified civilian to perfection.

He rushed toward Lucia's side of the car, and tears began to trace paths through the grime on his cheeks.

"Lucia, please do not let him ruin your marriage over me!"

Julian sobbed, his trembling fingers gripping the edge of her half-open window.

"Mr. Salvatore, I beg you, punish me. Beat me if you have to. Just do not fracture the Family Bond because of my stupid, clumsy mistake."

Lucia immediately stepped out of the car, placing her own body between Julian and me.

She glared at me through the open door, her chest heaving with an indignation she had no right to.

"Where is your honor, Vincenzo?"

She screamed the words at me, and the sound seemed to hang in the quiet street.

"He is just a junior associate trying to organize our tax files, and you treat him like a cartel spy! You are a monster."

The obligations I had honored for five years-the bullets taken, the accounts laundered-all of it felt like a stack of ledgers set alight, the pages curling into black ash.

I slowly stepped out of the Maserati, leaving the door ajar.

The flickering streetlights cast long shadows over the damp pavement.

I walked around the hood of the car, my footsteps heavy and deliberate as I closed the distance between us.

Lucia held her ground, stubbornly lifting her chin to challenge me, expecting me to yield as I always did.

I raised my hand and delivered a slap across her cheek. The sound was flat and ugly in the night air, followed by a profound silence.

Lucia stumbled back against the car door, clutching her face, where a red imprint was already blooming, in speechless shock.

I looked past her at Julian, whose gaze was fixed on the tips of my shoes, his breath held in anticipation, and offered him a smile that did not reach my eyes.

"Congratulations on your promotion, rat."

I turned my vacant eyes back to the woman I had once worshipped.

"Our blood oath is dead, Lucia."

Chapter 2

Vincenzo POV

The silence that stretched between the brick-fronts felt heavy enough to crush bone.

Lucia slowly lowered her trembling hand from her stinging cheek, her eyes wide with a mixture of panic and disbelief.

"You hit me."

Her voice trembled, but shock quickly twisted into defensive rage.

"You are losing your mind, Vincenzo. My dealings with Julian are strictly for the legitimate facades of this family."

She jabbed a manicured finger at my chest.

"You are letting your mafia paranoia destroy everything we built."

I looked down at her finger, where the diamond of her wedding band caught the faint streetlight.

My pride as a Salvatore-the inherited cruelty of a bloodline of ruthless Dons-burned like battery acid in my veins.

"We built nothing, Lucia."

I kept my voice completely devoid of emotion, a dead, flat calm.

"I built your empire with my mother's blood money, and you handed the keys to a parasite."

Julian, misjudging the stillness between us, took a step forward, reaching out to grab my forearm.

"Vincenzo, please, let us just talk about this inside."

The moment his foolish, civilian fingers brushed my coat, years of trained violence took over.

I grabbed him by the lapels of his suit, twisting the expensive fabric into my fists.

I spun him around and threw him onto the pavement.

Julian hit the concrete with a sickening thud, crying out as his elbows scraped raw against the asphalt.

Lucia shrieked, the sound grating against the night, and dropped to her knees beside him.

She hovered over his whimpering form like a shield.

"Apologize to him right now."

She looked up at me, so deep in her delusion she was actually demanding submission.

"You are acting like a street thug, not a husband."

I looked at the woman I had taken bullets for, and felt not a shred of the old devotion, only a profound and cold clarity.

"This is my final command as the Don of this family."

I spoke slowly, making sure every syllable pierced the cold air.

"Either you sign the annulment papers tomorrow morning, or I will take this to the Commission and strip you of every dime, every property, and every breath of power you possess."

I did not wait for her response.

I turned my back on them, leaving the ruin of my marriage on the sidewalk, and walked to the corner of the street.

I went directly to the lead black SUV of my security detail. I opened the driver's side door, took the soldier by his collar, and pulled him out onto the pavement. "The keys," I said, my voice leaving no room for argument. I slid into the driver's seat and slammed the door shut against the chill.

The SUV sped away, leaving the life I had built for her shrinking in the rearview mirror.

An hour later, the heavy iron gates of my Caporegime's compound swung open, the screech of metal a welcome sound.

Rocco was waiting on the porch, a lit cigar clamped between his teeth, surrounded by heavily armed guards who stood at rigid attention.

He took one look at my face and knew. No questions were asked.

We walked in grim silence down to his underground bunker.

The room smelled of gun oil, imported whiskey, and old leather-the scent of mobilization.

Crates of illegal firearms were stacked high against the damp concrete walls.

Rocco poured two glasses of neat bourbon and slid one across the heavy oak table.

I picked up the glass, my hand trembling slightly as the shock finally found purchase in my nerves.

The adrenaline was fading, leaving behind a hollow, rotting pain in my chest.

I hurled the glass against the wall.

The crystal shattered, the amber liquid staining the concrete like a fresh wound.

I gripped the edge of the table, bowing my head as the reality of my dead marriage crushed the air out of my lungs.

"She chose the rat, Rocco."

My voice cracked, the broken sound foreign to my own ears.

Rocco placed a heavy hand on my shoulder, his grip tight and loyal.

"Give the word, Boss."

I lifted my head, wiping the moisture from my eyes.

The grief was gone, replaced by a dark, consuming need for destruction.

"Assemble the men. I want every casino she owns to close, every credit line severed. I will not stop until she lacks the fare for a taxi out of Brooklyn."

Chapter 3

Vincenzo POV:

For two weeks, I stayed locked inside Rocco's compound.

The days blurred into long nights of planning and mapping out the dismantling of my own empire.

In the dim light of the bunker, I scrolled through Julian's social media feed on a burner phone.

The rat was getting bold.

His latest post featured a picture of him posing on the boarding stairs of the Salvatore family's private Gulfstream jet.

The smug caption read: "Reaching new heights in business."

It was not his posture that held my attention, but the reflection in the jet's polished window: the unmistakable silhouette of Lucia taking the photo.

Beside me, Rocco slammed his fist onto the metal table, rattling the stacked ammunition boxes.

"Let me put a bullet in his skull tonight, Vincenzo," Rocco growled, his dark eyes locked on the glowing screen. "He is parading around in your territory, eating right off your plate."

I calmly locked the phone and tossed it aside, where it clattered against the concrete floor.

"His death is too simple a solution. It misses the point."

Leaning back in my chair, I stared up at the damp ceiling.

"Lucia's ignorance is the true offense. She gave him the crown. Now, she must be made to wear the ashes."

I stood up, the legs of my chair scraping harshly against the floor, and grabbed my heavy wool coat.

"I need to retrieve my mother's effects from the penthouse," I said, slipping my arms into the sleeves.

I shot a cold glance at Rocco.

"Especially the emerald ring. It belongs to the Salvatore legacy, not a corporate front."

Rocco gave a curt nod, snatching his sidearm from the table and signaling for a heavily armed crew to follow us.

The drive into Manhattan was a tense blur, the city lights reflecting like smeared paint off the black hood of our armored SUV.

The private elevator ride up to the penthouse was silent.

I keyed in my master access code, heard the satisfying click of the lock, and pushed the heavy mahogany doors open.

The sharp scent of an unfamiliar, expensive cologne hit me instantly.

It was not mine.

At that moment, Lucia walked out of the kitchen, freezing the second she saw me standing in the foyer.

"Vincenzo," her voice was tight-a mixture of guilt and feigned annoyance. "You could have called. We are just... going over quarterly reports."

Before I could respond, a loud crash echoed from the hallway leading to my private vault.

A cold dread settled in my stomach.

Without a word, I bypassed her, my boots thudding against the hardwood floor.

I shoved the heavy vault door open, the hinges groaning.

The interior was a disaster.

Encrypted hard drives were scattered across the floor, and my mother's velvet display cases had been overturned.

My gaze snapped to the center pedestal, the heart of the vault.

There stood Julian, his face now pale.

In his violently trembling hands, he held the shattered pieces of my mother's emerald heirloom.

The antique gold band was bent, and the massive, flawless green stone was cracked into a dozen jagged fragments.

His kneecaps struck the steel floor with a deadened thud. The fabric at the seam of his trousers tore, but he seemed not to register the pain, his head instinctively bowing.

He burst into loud, pathetic sobs, the illusion of his power shattering.

"I am so, so sorry, Mr. Salvatore!"

He crawled toward my boots, begging for a mercy he would not receive.

"I was just looking for Lucia's tax documents! I slipped, I swear to God. It was an accident, I swear on my life!"

I didn't look at him; instead, I stared down at the broken, scattered pieces of my mother's legacy, feeling the last thread of my humanity snap.
