Chapter 1 of Betrayal of the Husband: The Returned Wife

"I spent three years in the dark so I could learn how to burn their world down. Standing at the edge of the Hampton pool, watching my 'widower' husband pretend to mourn while his mistress wore my jewelry, I didn't feel sadness. I felt an exquisite, cold hunger for justice. I didn't just return to take back my name; I came to take back everything they stole, starting with their dignity."

The July heat smothered the Hampton villa, turning the pool party into a suffocating trap.

From the shadows of the patio, I watched Alexander Hamilton.

He was slumped in a wicker chair, his eyes pathetic as they glued to the glowing screen of his phone.

My own face smiled back at him—a three-year-old wedding photo. How touching, his fake grief.

A warm body pressed against his back, and manicured fingers snatched at the device.

"She's been dead for three years, Alexander," Bella Ross hissed, her voice sharp with an irritation she couldn't hide.

He yanked the phone away. "Don't touch my phone."

"You're being ridiculous," she scoffed.

"I said, keep your hands off my things."

I watched Bella pout, crossing her arms over a designer dress bought with my blood money.

"Mr. and Mrs. Chambers are here to discuss a massive investment," she snapped.

"Then go talk to them."

"They didn't come to watch you mourn your dead wife," she sneered. "Get up and act like a host."

"I'm not interested in playing host tonight, Bella. Walk away."

"You can't just sit in a corner staring at a ghost while real money walks out the door."

"Watch me."

Alexander unlocked the screen again, but I was done watching from the dark.

It was time to plunge his world into shadows.

I stepped forward, blocking the patio glare.

I stood over him, a silhouette in a black sleeveless jumpsuit, my blonde, chin-length hair catching the light like a halo of ice.

Then, I intentionally adjusted my left wrist.

The silver bracelet gleamed. Engraved with AH.

The salvage team’s official report had listed it as lost to the ocean. They were wrong.

Alexander’s bourbon glass slipped from his fingers. It shattered against the cobblestones with a violent, satisfying crack.

He shot to his feet, knocking the wicker chair backward with a thud that silenced the music.

He lunged forward and grabbed my wrist.

His thumb pressed hard into the metal clasp.

"Where did you get this?" he demanded, his voice trembling.

I didn't pull away.

I let him feel the cold weight of his sins.

"A thrift shop on Rue de Rivoli," I said, my French accent flawless and cold.

"You're lying," he snarled.

"Eighty euros," I replied smoothly. "It was quite a find."

"Who are you?"

"I am Diana Morales."

"Why are you here?"

"Invited by the Elysian Fund for tonight's preview."

The name Elysian hit him like a physical blow.

The ghost trust from Switzerland that had swallowed fifteen percent of his group's debt three months ago.

Bella shoved her way forward, her heels stomping the stone. "Who the hell do you think you are, coming in here and causing a scene?"

I shifted my gaze to her, my expression utterly unbothered. "I've seen you in magazines, Bella Ross."

Bella lifted her chin. "Then you know who you're talking to."

"I know your gallery," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "That blue abstract painting photographed quite well. The one you’re calling the centerpiece of your upcoming auction."

"Not that you could afford to look at it," Bella sneered.

"I don't need to afford it."

"Excuse me?"

I offered a small, terrifying smile. "That painting was done by me."

Bella let out a harsh laugh. "You're insane."

"I am the anonymous artist, L.M.," I stated. "You priced it at four hundred and eighty thousand, but I am the original author. And I never signed a contract with your pathetic gallery."

"Security!" Bella yelled. "Get this fraud out of here!"

Before she could signal the guards, I reached into my pocket and pulled out a folded sketch paper. I smoothed it open slowly.

The bottom right corner bore the clear signature L.M. Right below it sat a date: August 22, three years ago. The day I supposedly died.

Bella’s face drained of all color. She lunged forward, clawing at the paper.

I clamped my fingers around Bella’s wrist like an iron vice. She gasped, her eyes wide with sudden panic.

"You have seven renovation disputes and two employment lawsuits at your Paris studio," I whispered, the threat spiking in the air. "You can't tear all my paintings, Bella. But if you hurt my hand, your lawyer should have told you something crucial."

"What?" she hissed.

"Never touch anyone who has a contract with Elysian. We don't just sue—we liquidate."

Furious and humiliated, Bella raised her free hand for a slap.

Alexander shoved her aside before she could make contact.

He stepped directly in front of me, his eyes locked on the metal band around my wrist.

"My wife had one exactly like it," he said, his voice tight with a desperation that tasted like victory.

I twisted the silver band slowly. "Is that so?"

"She was wearing it when she died. It was never found."

"Then I guess I stole her luck," I said. "I've always been lucky."

I turned toward the nearby bar cart and reached for a glass of sparkling water.

I intentionally let the black fabric of my sleeve slip back.

The light brown burn scar marked my inner forearm.

Alexander’s knees buckled. He swayed, barely catching his balance against the edge of the stone table.

Three years ago.

A boiling coffee pot.

He had ripped it from my hands during a fight, the scalding liquid splashing across that exact spot.

"Diana," he choked out, his voice violently shaking.

I paused, my hand hovering over the glass. "Yes?"

"Your arm. That scar."

"What about it?"

"Where did you get it?"

I pulled the sleeve down, hiding the truth behind a mask of indifference. "A grease splash."

"That's a lie," he whispered.

"From working in a kitchen," I insisted, my tone hardening.

"I know that burn."

"You know nothing about me. Excuse my rudeness tonight."

I set the water glass down and turned my back to the party.

My silhouette vanished into the darkness of the wooden boardwalk, leaving him crumbling in the ruins of his own guilt.

Bella was screaming behind me, but I didn't hear a word.

I stopped at the very end of the boardwalk, letting the crashing ocean swallow the obnoxious noise of the villa.

I unhooked the silver bracelet and held it up to the moonlight. AH.

My skin felt like a hollow shell, but for the first time in three years, I felt alive.

The sea breeze didn't smell like the ocean; it smelled like the blinding white walls of the Paris clinic where I spent four hundred and thirty-seven days planning this moment.

"Hello, Alexander," I whispered to the empty night. "I'm back. And I'm taking everything."

My phone buzzed once in my pocket. A single encrypted message from Nate: *Phase one confirmed. Proceed.*

I slipped the device back into my jumpsuit. The boardwalk creaked under my heels as I walked toward the waiting car. Three years of planning had only just begun.
