Chapter 2

I sat by the bed and stayed up all night.

When Jocelyn woke up, she was full of energy. When she saw the dark circles under my eyes, she was stunned.

"Honey, didn't you sleep last night?" she asked me.

Then, she looked at the bed next to her in confusion.

"Didn't the nurse tell you that you can sleep there?"

  I stared at Jocelyn, absent-minded.

I had been taking very good care of her, so her face looked very delicate, and her skin was very smooth.

Especially when the morning light shone into the room, Jocelyn really looked like an exquisite doll.

In my memory, Jocelyn was a girl who loved me and left her hometown to marry me. Would she really betray me?

  I still didn't believe it.

To be exact, I didn't dare to believe it.

Noticing my gaze, Jocelyn suddenly asked me, "Honey, is there anything on my face?"

  I shook my head.

"No. It's just that I was worried about you and our baby Ian, so I didn't dare to fall asleep."

Jocelyn's eyes reddened when she heard this.

She held my arm intimately and kissed my face.

  "Honey, thank you.

  "I love you," she said.

Perhaps it was because I had a suspicion in my heart. Her intimacy made me feel a little uncomfortable.

I forced myself not to get up and shake off Jocelyn's hands.

I told myself not to think about it.

If Jocelyn really betrayed me, I'd rather die!

I really didn't want to think that way.

But the doctor wouldn't lie to me.

The doctor really thought that I was too embarrassed to admit that it was our sexual behavior that almost caused my wife to miscarry.

As for the protective measures the doctor had mentioned, I knew it very well.

After all, I had already learned some basic knowledge about it on the Internet.

The most important thing was that the female doctor had done an internal examination for Jocelyn. She knew better than me why Jocelyn showed signs of a miscarriage.

If the doctor wasn't completely sure, she wouldn't have been so meddlesome as to give me so much advice.

I tried my best to cheer myself up. After accompanying Jocelyn to do the fetal monitoring, I suggested that I should go home and cook.

  Jocelyn didn't refuse.

For some reason, I suddenly felt relieved.

I thought that I must have been overthinking.

After getting home, I cleaned up the takeout on the table and walked around the room. But I didn't find anything unusual.

I couldn't help but blame myself for being suspicious.

Maybe it was just because Jocelyn felt too lonely when I was not at home.

  I totally understood it.

After Jocelyn got pregnant, I also helped myself with my hand when I had an erection.

The haze in my heart dissipated. I hummed a song, threw away the garbage, and went to cook.

But I suddenly noticed that in the sink, there was some powder, which had not been completely washed away.

I got some of the power on my fingers and smelled it.

The next second, I was shocked.

  It was the cigarette ash!

No one in our family smoked at home, neither did Jocelyn.

Before Jocelyn got pregnant, she would feel suffocated when she smelled cigarettes. After she was pregnant, she still couldn't stand the smell of cigarettes.

So, I wondered which man had come to my house.

That man even smoked in the kitchen so openly!

I chopped the food with the kitchen knife faster and faster.

It was as if I was chopping that unknown man into pieces!

At this moment, Jocelyn called me.

"Honey, your mom brought chicken over a few days ago. Can you take it out and make some chicken soup for me?"

Hearing this, I thought, My mom has been here?

  That's right.

After all, my mom is addicted to cigarettes.

She must have taken a few puffs because of her addiction, and then Jocelyn stopped her.

My mom's addiction to cigarettes was also the reason why I didn't dare to ask her to come to take care of Jocelyn.

I opened the refrigerator and saw that there were indeed two chopped chickens.

The plastic bags were obviously the ones that my mom often used when she went to the grocery store.

If my mom had been here, I really couldn't blame others for the cigarette ashes.

While stewing the chicken, I called my mom.

"Mom, I've stewed the chicken. It smells so good! Thank you, Mom!"

My mom chuckled, "Well. That's a good thing.

"By the way, how's Jocelyn's appetite these days? Is she still suffering from morning sickness?"

My mom nagged at me about how to take care of pregnant women.

I held back my tears and didn't dare to tell her that Jocelyn was hospitalized.

Suddenly, my mom changed the subject.

"Edwin, did you change your car again?"

Chapter 3

When I heard my mom's question, my heart inexplicably skipped a beat.

I replied, "Mom, I'm saving money for my baby. Why should I change a new car?"

"Oh, then I got it wrong. Nothing now. It's all right."

After saying that, my mom hung up before I could say anything else.

After cleaning up the room and delivering lunch to Jocelyn, I finally got some free time and fell asleep next to Jocelyn's bed.

I forced myself not to think too much.

But in a daze, I always felt that someone was staring straight at me.

I didn't sleep well because I had something on my mind.

I even heard Jocelyn calling my name. But no matter how hard I struggled, I couldn't wake up.

Somehow, I seemed to have heard a familiar groan.

After a few hours, or maybe just a few minutes, I finally woke up.

When I saw Jocelyn, who was eating fruits next to me, I was stunned.

I felt that I must have been possessed.

  But Jocelyn's lips...

I asked, "Honey, why are your lips so red?"

Jocelyn suddenly stopped eating her fruit.

  She mumbled, "It's too dry.

"Honey, try this watermelon. It's very sweet!"

After hearing her words, I also felt dry in my throat.

"Honey, you need to rest well. Why did you go to buy watermelons yourself?"

But Jocelyn said, "No. I simply ordered it online. Someone else delivered it here for me."

I ate the watermelon, but my mind was full of guesses.

As the suspicion lingered in my heart, I couldn't control my thoughts.

Unfortunately, I didn't find any more clues until Jocelyn was discharged from the hospital.

I gradually put my mind at ease.

However, when I went to go through the discharge formalities, a doctor pointed to the B-ray report and said to me, "Mr. Holman.

"Your wife should pay attention to her diet. She's in the middle stage of pregnancy, but the fetus is already overweight."

  I blurted out, "What?

"How's that possible? She had serious morning sickness during the first three months of pregnancy. Her appetite just got better in the past two months. How could the baby be overweight?"

The doctor replied, "Well, it depends. Maybe the fetus absorbed nutrients very well, or maybe your wife's last period was not accurate. It's normal for there to be some errors!

"According to the current situation, I'd say it's about a month older than the fetus of the same age!"

After hearing this, I felt so angry that I almost blacked out!

  I thought, A month?

How could there be so many coincidences?

Am I really not the baby's father?

  Damn it!

So Jocelyn was already pregnant when she married me?

And I don't even know who that bastard is!

Before Jocelyn and I got married, we had been in a relationship for three years. But Bonita didn't allow Jocelyn to leave the city and marry me.

In the end, Jocelyn secretly packed her things, came to Philadelphia overnight, and proposed to me.

After getting off the train, she bought a pair of rings with all the money she earned from her internship, held a bunch of roses, and proposed to me.

At that time, I knelt on one knee to her.

"Jocelyn, being able to marry you is the luckiest thing I've ever had in my life!"

We hugged each other tightly and then went straight to the city hall!

A month later, Jocelyn began to suffer from serious morning sickness!

Seeing that Jocelyn was suffering so much, I decided to hold a special wedding with her on the 100th day of our baby's birth.

I had never thought that Jocelyn, who had abandoned everything just to be with me, would betray me.

I had been in love with her for three years before we got married. At that time, everyone in the school would say that we were a perfect couple!

Jocelyn had been away from her hometown and stayed in Philadelphia for only half a year. I knew all the men around her.

Every sleepless night, I would try to figure out who she cheated on me for, but I had no clues at all.

  Now, my mind was blank.

I couldn't help thinking, Am I just too narrow-minded? Am I in the wrong direction in my investigation?

However, everything went on as usual in the following days.

It was as if my suspicions were just my suspicions.

In order to catch the adulterer, I secretly installed surveillance cameras at home.

But the baby was about to be born, and I still didn't find any trace of that man!

After all, Jocelyn was the woman I had loved for so many years, so I still had to take good care of her.

However, no matter how hard I tried to control her diet, her belly still got much bigger than the pregnant women of the same pregnancy stage.

When Jocelyn was 35 weeks pregnant, she gave birth prematurely.

I felt a chill in my heart.

When the doctor urged me to sign the consent papers, I reluctantly signed them with my hands trembling.

A premature baby was a little overweight. Who would believe this?

But my mom held her grandson, Ian, with a face full of joy.

She said to me, "Edwin, this boy looks the same as you when you were a baby!"

Hearing this, I really didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

I also hoped that this chubby boy was really my son.

I took the baby's hair for a paternity test.

  The waiting was torturous.

When I got the results, my heart was eventually filled with disappointment and anger...
