Chapter 4
In my past life, I had tried collecting evidence and reporting Elton to the authorities, but I'd failed.
Before Lacey shoved me off the roof, my boss, Ronald Stevenson, had already asked to see me in his office that day.
He showed me a few screenshots taken from the surveillance cameras and said, "I know that you're investigating Elton and planning to report him for misconduct. Let me tell you now that I already know about it, and there's no need for you to investigate any further."
I looked at Ronald in confusion.
Ronald didn't bother hiding the truth. He said, "I started this company to make money, not to judge people for their inappropriate behavior.
"And compared to his misconduct, the amount of money he brings in for the company is more than enough to make up for his shortcomings. That's all that I care about."
I knew that the department Elton headed was the company's main cash cow. However, it wasn't until then that I finally realized how important Elton's money-making ability was.
This time, the only reason why I still stayed in this company and didn't investigate Elton any further wasn't that I'd admitted defeat, but rather, I was planning to completely uproot Elton and get rid of him, once and for all.
In my past life, I had once handled a very important part of a potentially very lucrative project when I was still under his department. And after I transferred out, Elton didn't continue working with my ideas and flow, and the proposal eventually fell through.
This time, I was going to use the failing proposal to turn the tide in my favor.
Everyone who had wronged me thus far would have to watch me as I made my counterattack!
Chapter 5
Although I had turned down Lacey's offer to go and serve Elton that night, she still carried on with her plan without me.
She got out of work that night as quickly as she could and hurriedly left the company.
I buried myself in the project proposal and paid her no heed. I even voluntarily began working overtime to complete the proposal.
Sometime during midnight, the sound of footsteps interrupted my work.
It was Xavier, Lacey's boyfriend, who had arrived at the company with supper for her.
It was only then that I realized Lacey had rushed off not to go on a date with Xavier, but rather, with Elton instead. Yet, she'd lied to Xavier about her whereabouts and told him that she was working overtime at the company and wouldn't be going home today.
Xavier's appearance, meant to be a pleasant surprise for Lacey, had now completely thrown her plans off track.
"Didn't Lacey say that she was working overtime today too?" Xavier asked. "Where is she?"
I shrugged. It was obvious to anyone that I was the only one with my computer screen still turned on and illuminating my face. His question suddenly sounded a little dumb.
The next day, when Lacey appeared at the company, she was immediately stopped by Xavier at the door, who had waited up for her all night.
He sniffed around Lacey like a bloodhound. Then, his expression turned dark almost at once.
"You weren't at the company last night. And this smell didn't come from our home. Where have you been, and what did you do last night?"
Lacey obviously panicked for a bit. However, she quickly calmed down and shook Xavier off. She then straightened out her messed-up clothes and said, "I'd wanted to keep it a secret from you at first, but since you've already found out about it, then there's nothing more for me to say.
"Let's break up."
Xavier stared at her in pure disbelief.
"You're not even going to pretend to try and explain yourself before breaking up with me? What are you taking me for?"
Lacey chortled out loud. She covered her nose and took a few steps backward, keeping a fair distance away from him.
"You can think whatever you want, but we're through. And you should stop bothering me again."
In my past life, Xavier had been very easily swayed by Lacey and convinced to help her throw me off the roof to my death. It was obvious that he was simply obsessed and even infatuated with her.
So, in this life, of course, he also wasn't going to take her flimsy excuse to break up.
He rushed up to her and grabbed her by the collar, throwing her against the wall behind them. He glared at her angrily and said, "Explain yourself properly! Why are you breaking up with me? Have you been sleeping with somebody else?"
Meanwhile, Lacey was influenced by her newfound power over the past few days and didn't feel threatened at all. Instead, she yelled back at him, "It's none of your business! You're a worthless piece of shit, and you can't tell me what to do!"
Xavier slapped Lacey hard.
"What do you mean by that? I'm your boyfriend—"
Xavier wasn't done shouting at Lacey, but she raised her leg and kicked him harshly in the jewels. Xavier's face immediately scrunched up in pain as he lost all strength in his arms.
Lacey fought Xaiver's hands off and glared at him while still nursing her cheek. Then, she spat at him and said, "Boyfriend? Look at how poor and disgusting you are! Did you really think that you deserved someone like me?
"If you want to suffer and rot away in the bottom rung of society, then do it yourself, by all means! But don't you dare drag me into your shit!"
After Lacey was done yelling at him, she waved at the security guards and got them to throw him out of the building.
I watched everything silently from the side.
Xavier was someone who would kill for Lacey. I simply couldn't imagine what he would do now if he were set on getting his revenge on her.
