Chapter 1
The supplementary card I've issued for my grandmother shows that an eight-thousand-dollar purchase has taken place in another city. But the transaction records show that the money is used on hymenoplasty.
I'm shell-shocked, to say the least.
Grandma is 84 years old this year. She's been bedridden and paralyzed for years. Why would she even get hymenoplasty done on her, to begin with?
But when my investigation leads me to a plastic surgery hospital, I find out that my wife, Stella Watson, is actually the lead doctor of said clinic. So, I call her to demand answers from her.
However, Stella refuses to answer my questions properly.
"Don't worry, honey. Something's most likely wrong with the system. Betsy is already this old—why would she have her hymen repaired?"
That's just a bullshit answer coming from her. She seriously thinks I'm gullible enough to believe her.
I merely huff coldly in return before calling my dad, who works in the Department of Commerce.
"Dad, Stella is most likely cheating on me. I want her plastic surgery hospital as compensation for my impending divorce!"
I jerked the steering wheel to the side, pulling the car to a stop in front of a newly opened plastic surgery hospital.
The trees on either side of the hospital entrance were adorned with colorful ribbons and balloons. There was also a poster prominently displayed at the entrance, featuring a "husband and wife" in scrubs and in the midst of performing surgery.
However, it was precisely this poster that instantly ignited my anger.
The woman in the poster was my wife, Stella Watson, but the man in the mask next to her was someone else.
I stormed into the hospital at once.
Just a while later, I noticed Stella and that man standing outside the operating room while being surrounded and interviewed by countless reporters and media. When I caught sight of the man's face next to her, I felt my breath catch in my throat.
Wasn't that Drake Fletcher, Stella's brother-in-law?
"Dr. Watson! What's the secret to the loving relationship that you and your husband have maintained for so many years?"
A reporter's question quickly drew me back to the present, and I balled my fists even tighter.
Stella just laughed happily under everyone's curious gazes and hugged Drake ever closer to her.
"Our marriage is as stable as ever because I make sure to keep our exchanges fresh and exciting every single day," she said. "Otherwise, even the most loving couple would get tired of each other after more than ten years. Don't you think so?"
Tired of each other?
We had been married for ten years, and yet, Stella had stayed separately from me for five years because of "work". And now, she was telling the world that it was because she was keeping things "fresh and exciting" for other men instead?
At once, I barged my way through the crowd, rushed up to her, and slapped her hard on the face.
The slap was loud and echoed throughout the room, nearly drowning out the clicks of the camera shutters around us.
"Stella Watson! You're saying that your so-called freshness and excitement is by having an affair with your own brother-in-law?"
Five years ago, Stella's older sister, Stephanie Watson, had died of a terminal illness, and Drake had no choice but to seek refuge in Jondavia out of desperation.
I took pity on him because he was all alone, and so I gave him a job as a caretaker to my grandmother, Betsy Mallory, and paid him a salary of 40 thousand dollars a year.
But now, it turned out that he was having an affair with my wife!
The slap was loud and resounding, and the reporters and media went into a frenzy as the flashes and camera shutters kept going off.
Yet, when Stella first caught sight of me, her expression tensed, and her lips turned pale as well.
However, before I could tear into her facade any further, Drake suddenly shoved me off and yelled, "Lucas Greene! What are you doing? Who told you to come here to look for her?"
He hollered at me like he was Stella's rightful husband instead, and I was the third wheel.
I staggered backward and saw Drake shielding Stella behind him, his face filled with terror.
Also, his yelling seemed to have relieved Stella as she regained her usual coldness and said, "Lucas, you're going overboard. Get out of the way! This is not a place where you should be!"
Stella's eyes were sharp as she faced the crowd of reporters with full confidence.
"I'm sorry for the minor disruption, everyone. This man is the caretaker I hired to look after my parents, and he's a little cuckoo in the head as of late…"
Me? Cuckoo?
Just yesterday, she was all nestled in my arms, asking me if we should think about having a baby together. But now, she had turned into a complete stranger in a hilariously terrifying way. Brilliant, just brilliant!
"Stella Watson, I dare you to repeat that to me again. Who is the caretaker and who is your rightful husband here?"
I immediately retrieved a photo of my marriage certificate on my phone and showed it to the reporters, also showing them the messages and call logs between us.
Stella's pupils constricted sharply, but before she could say a word, Drake suddenly fell to the ground, his eyes red-rimmed, and began rebuking me disapprovingly.
"Lucas! I know that you were assaulted by those crazy gangsters back then, which drove you completely insane, but you can't just doctor a wedding certificate with my wife and use it against her like this!"
With Drake misleading the public on purpose, Stella began regaining her composure as color returned to her complexion.
"That's enough! How many more times must you show that fake certificate in public?"
She then ran up to me, grabbed my phone, and flung it to the ground until it broke.
"You're out of your mind! How many times do I need to explain to you that men don't have a hymen! There's no use for you to keep threatening me like that!
"I might be a plastic surgeon, but I can't repair the damage you suffered from being raped by another man!"
Stella's words immediately turned the reporters' hesitation and curiosity into that of utter contempt and mockery toward me.
"Aw, look who couldn't take it just because he got raped by a man! And yet, he's begging Dr. Watson to restore him? Idiot!"
"Did he think that if he restored his 'hymen', he wouldn't be defiled anymore? Hahaha!"
I could no longer hold back my anger as the crowd around me continued laughing and jeering at me.
I grabbed Drake's work ID, which had my name written on it, and said in a voice louder than all the others, "Drake Fletcher, did you really think that you automatically became a medical student just because you're now using my name instead?
"My name is Lucas Greene, and I'm from the Greene family. I bet you know what it means that I have that as my last name!" I said, turning to look at Stella with cold, steely eyes.
"Stella Watson, have you forgotten whose money this hospital was founded upon and built with?"
Chapter 2
As soon as the words were out of my mouth, Stella and Drake turned pale at the same time, and the crowd of reporters and onlookers immediately sensed something fishy.
"Wait, if the crazy guy is so confident about it, don't tell me that he really is Dr. Watson's husband after all!"
"Exactly! Look, Dr. Watson's face is turning pale. Could it be that this man has been telling the truth after all?"
The murmurs in the hospital corridor grew louder and louder, making Stella feel increasingly worried.
Just then, a loud, crisp slap was heard.
Drake had just slapped himself in the face.
"I'm sorry! Since you think that I'm the one impersonating you, then I don't deserve to be a doctor anymore! I will resign immediately!"
Drake continued to weep as he kept slapping himself in the face again and again.
"Both of us are the ones who have wronged you. All you want is just money, isn't it? We'll give it to you! Just please, stop acting up all crazy in public like this again!
"We'll sell all of our belongings and scrape together all of our assets to make it up to you, alright?"
Drake's frantic, supposedly heartbreaking actions sent everyone into a daze, including me.
Before I could react, however, Stella immediately went over to him and helped him up. Then, she gritted her teeth as she glared at me.
"You madman! Just because I turned you away from surgery, you used all sorts of underhanded tactics to drive away all my other doctors at the hospital! Now, you're driving my husband away too?
"You just want money, don't you? I'll give it to you! There! Is that enough?"
Stella then grabbed a handful of money and slapped it in my face, cash flying everywhere and fluttering onto the ground.
"Take the money and get out of my sight! If you keep acting up again, I swear that you'll never get another penny from me!"
The cash hit my face hard, but my dignity felt as though it had just been trampled all over by her.
Was this really the same person whom I'd always thought was a good wife to me? To think that she was now humiliating me in public by throwing my money in my face!
And I was the dignified heir to the Greene family! I did not need any pity handouts from her!
Seeing that I was going to speak again, Stella immediately cut in before I could get a word out.
"I see now that you're not just trying to get your surgery done for free but also trying to extort more money from me, aren't you? Over my dead body!
"That 80-something year-old woman in there is much purer than you are after that hymenoplasty!"
An 80-something year-old woman? Grandma?
I was completely struck dumb.
I didn't know where my strength came from, but I pushed my way through security and stumbled into the operating room.
There, lying completely naked under a thin blue sheet with all of the livestreaming gear pointed at her, was my grandmother.
My breath caught in my throat. At once, a surge of deep hatred welled up within me.
Just a week ago, Stella had told me that she was bringing Grandma on a trip around the world. But as it turned out, she ended up using Grandma as a clinical model for her inaugural hymenoplasty surgery at the hospital!
She was such a beast! How dare she do such a thing to Grandma and humiliate the dignified matriarch of the Greene family like this?
Tears immediately sprang from my eyes. This time, I turned and glared at Stella with fierce hatred.
"Stella Watson! How dare you use Grandma as your clinical model? I will never forgive you for this!"
Every word erupted from my throat in great fury. However, Drake told the security guards to forcibly drag me away before he burst into uncontrollable tears.
"What nonsense are you talking about? Who's going to believe a madman like you?
"This is my grandmother! And she willingly became the live clinical model for the hospital! Don't you dare meddle in this and twist our words!"
What did Drake mean by Grandma "willingly" being a live clinical model?
I couldn't listen to another word he said. My eyes blazed with fury as I yelled, "Stella Watson! I'm telling you that my father is on the way here right now!
"How dare you do this to Grandma? He's going to make sure that your entire Watson family pays for this!"
Chapter 3
"Cupcake," Grandma suddenly said.
That was her nickname for me!
I ignored Stella's sudden look of terror and rushed toward Grandma, hugging her tightly.
"Grandma, you're awake! Wait for me, I'll save you. I'll get you out of here!"
My face was completely filled with grief as I took off my coat and draped it over her shoulders.
Instantly, murmurs of doubt arose from the crowd of reporters and onlookers.
"Look, Dr. Watson's face completely darkened! Could it really be that the man is from the reclusive Greene family after all?"
"I can't be sure, but I did hear that the Greene family had an old lady who was in her 80s too."
However, amidst the crowd's murmurs, Grandma suddenly shoved me aside and screamed at the top of her lungs.
"Ahh! Let go of me!"
Grandma looked terrified. It wasn't until Drake ran up to her and hugged her that she finally calmed down.
"Drake… Drake…"
I stiffened, looking as though someone had just poured a bucket of icy-cold water over my head.
Drake wouldn't stop howling and crying, however. He rushed up to me and forcefully shoved me aside.
"You kept abusing Grandma for years, and I never even held it against you as her caretaker! But Grandma has only just woken up from surgery now, and she needs to rest and recuperate. Please stop torturing her again!"
I was shoved back until my body slammed hard against the operating table. However, my mind had gone completely blank as I stared at Grandma in utter disbelief.
"How could this be? Grandma… It's me, Lucas…"
However, no matter how much I called out to her, Grandma would only look at me with terrified eyes.
But she was my grandmother, the one who'd watched me grow up since I was a baby!
What had Drake done to her?
My voice was hoarse as I lunged at Drake, grabbing him by the collar and shouting, "What have you done to my grandmother? Why doesn't she know who I am anymore?"
A split second later, however, Stella's face changed again. She kicked me hard in the waist, and I was sent flying back against the wall.
"You bastard! Get your hands off my husband!"
I slid to the floor after hitting the wall at full force, spitting out a mouthful of blood. However, the deadly glare in my eyes was still there.
"My dad will be here any moment, Stella Watson! Do you even know what you're doing?"
Stella stared down at me with a haughty expression as she spoke, her words sharper than a knife.
"Lucas, you're having a bipolar disorder attack again. I'm calling the mental institution now to take you in for some 'recovery'!"
At once, a few security guards rushed up to me and pinned me to the floor.
I still glared fiercely at Stella despite the immense pressure against my back.
At that moment, a wicked grin curled on Drake's lips. He smugly walked up to me and grabbed me by my collar, saying in a low voice, "Do you know why your beloved grandmother ended up like this?
"Ever heard of shock and aversion therapy? Maybe you should read up about it.
"After all, Stella shocked your stupid grandmother at least 200 times before she finally forgot about you, and Stella did it all to make me happy…"
My ears suddenly rang as my pupils constricted sharply.
Damn Drake! Who gave him the nerve to do such a thing?
"Ah! Lucas, you're acting up again! Save me, Stella! This psycho is going to kill me!"
Drake suddenly screamed as he backed away from me. The crowd also quickly dispersed in a panic and ran off helter-skelter after his actions.
I gritted my teeth as the security guards continued holding me down, glaring at Stella as I said, "Stella Watson! Did you think you could just do whatever you wanted after abusing your power to send me into the mental institution?
"You'd better release me and Grandma right now, and I'll just divorce you! We can still end on a good note!
"If not, you can jolly well wait until your entire family vanishes off the face of the earth in Jondavia!"
