Chapter 1

At the grand funeral of the Old Boss, an ironclad decree was laid down: the mother of my husband's firstborn son would inherit the entire mafia empire.

But before the ashes were even cold, my best friend Serena appeared in a hospital gown, cradling a newborn boy.

She slapped a DNA paternity report against my chest.

"Sign the divorce papers, and vanish."

My in-laws, who had always despised my three years of barrenness, immediately rejoiced and flocked to Serena's side.

They cursed me for being a useless wife and ordered the Syndicate soldiers to drag me out of the estate empty-handed.

When I desperately pulled out my ultrasound report to prove I was finally pregnant, my father-in-law actually drew his silver-plated revolver and aimed it directly at my stomach.

He ordered his men to drag me to a back-alley clinic for a forced abortion, claiming I was unfit to bear the Don's true heir.

I looked at the toxic family surrounding me, my heart turning to absolute ice.

For years, I had treated Serena like a sister, and I had served this family with perfect loyalty, yet they were ready to murder my unborn child for a lying usurper.

I wiped the blood from my brow and let out a cold, mocking laugh.

Instead of begging for mercy, I ordered the family doctor to pull up the raw diagnostic files from Serena's delivery, ready to show them exactly what kind of defective "heir" they were risking their lives for.

Chapter 1

Valeria POV

The air in the grand parlor of the Falcone Estate was thick with the funereal scent of lilies and old mahogany. I stood before the casket of Vittorio Falcone, a man whose name was a currency of fear, and I froze. My former best friend, Serena, was shoving a newborn infant toward me, her whisper a blade against my ear.

"Sign the divorce papers," she hissed, "and vanish."

Her threat was simple: if I refused, she would allow the Syndicate to execute me for being a barren queen, while she paraded my husband's firstborn son as her own.

We were standing in the shadow of the Old Boss's death. Before his heart had stopped, he had laid down an ironclad decree that sent a tremor through the foundations of our world.

The mother who births the firstborn Falcone son will inherit the network of deep-water ports that controlled Naples, and the unnumbered bonds in the Geneva vaults.

My husband, Dante, was currently thousands of miles away in South Africa.

He was the Don of the Falcone Syndicate, a man whose quiet efficiency in bloodshed had earned him the name 'The Reaper'.

He was there orchestrating a war against the cartels, securing our borders with methodical slaughter.

For three years of our high-stakes mafia marriage, my body had failed me.

I had struggled with a hostile womb, unable to conceive the heir Dante desperately wanted.

Serena knew this better than anyone.

She was an Associate who had used the scaffolding of our friendship to infiltrate the architecture of my life.

Now, she was wheeled before me at a heavily guarded mafia funeral by an attending nurse. She was draped in a luxurious, blood-red velvet coat over her silk hospital gown, looking pale but victorious as she cradled a newborn in her arms.

She had audaciously orchestrated her delivery in the VIP wing, right next to the Old Boss's deathbed.

She announced her victory in a low, smug tone, demanding I leave the estate with nothing, and then had the arrogance to command that the child call her godmother.

Then, with a flick of her wrist, she slapped a DNA paternity report against my chest.

The paper confirmed the infant shared Dante's bloodline.

I looked down at the document, my gaze catching on a single line of clinical text tucked into the bottom corner of the medical dossier.

A faint, humorless smile touched my lips.

Serena boasted that she had already moved into the main Falcone villa to recover.

At that moment, the parlor doors swung open and Carmela, Dante's mother, swept in.

She had just heard the urgent whispers from a breathless servant and her face was flushed with the ecstatic news of a grandson.

I held Serena's gaze, forcing my breathing to match the slow, deliberate tick of the grandfather clock against the far wall.

"Your child will never inherit a single cent of the Falcone assets," I told her, my voice even and low.

Serena scoffed loudly, pointing at the DNA results and warning me to sign the divorce papers and walk away empty-handed.

Carmela rushed over to the baby, marveling at how the infant resembled a young Dante.

She immediately turned and ordered the Syndicate Soldiers to block my path.

She meant to summon the Family Consigliere on the spot, to witness the transfer of the entire estate to Serena's name.

Carmela's disgust at my three barren years was a palpable thing, an open wound in the room.

I stood my ground, firmly repeating that Serena would not touch a single cent of the fortune.

Serena raised her voice so the gathering crowd could hear, claiming I had been unfaithful and was unfit to bear the Don's true heir.

Lorenzo, Dante's father and a former Capo, stepped into the circle.

He looked affectionately at Serena, discussing the immediate transfer of power with his wife.

He even offered Serena expensive delicacies from the catering table.

I let out a low laugh, mocking Lorenzo and Carmela for uncorking their champagne too early, and warned them their golden goose was a fraud.

Serena continued her venomous lies, vowing that Dante's son would never accept me when he grew up.

Carmela echoed Serena's delusions, swearing the infant was the spitting image of the Don.

Serena played the fragile victim perfectly, tearfully offering to do another DNA test to prove her innocence.

Carmela comforted Serena and furiously berated me, cementing her belief that the child was the rightful Falcone heir.

Lorenzo waved a dismissive hand in the air, ordering the guards to drag me from the funeral parlor.

He cursed me, his voice thick with indignation, for making the mother of the heir cry.

Two burly Soldiers grabbed my arms.

I clamped my jaw until I tasted blood, and then with a sudden, violent twist, I tore my arms from their grip. The coarse fabric of their jackets scraped against my skin.

I looked at the toxic family surrounding me.

"I am pregnant," I loudly declared.

Chapter 2

Valeria POV

Ignoring the sudden, leaden silence that fell over the parlor, I reached into my designer bag and pulled out a pristine medical ultrasound report.

I held it up, the crisp white paper catching the dim light from a high, curtained window.

The bold, black print at the top clearly stated a single, irrefutable fact: Sixteen Weeks Gestation.

Lorenzo and Carmela exchanged a look of conspiratorial disdain, and then let out a sharp, mocking laugh that struck the marble walls and died.

A sinew in Serena's neck jumped, and her fingers contracted, claw-like, around the ultrasound report, snatching it from my hand.

"You're barely four months along," she sneered, her eyes glinting with contempt. "The gender is unknown."

"You have no standing to challenge my son for the inheritance," she hissed. "Must I have the Old Boss's will read to you word for word?"

As if summoned by her words, the Syndicate Lawyer appeared at that exact moment.

He took his position near the mahogany casket and, in a voice devoid of emotion, read the will to the hushed room.

"The entirety of the offshore assets transfers exclusively to the biological mother of Dante's firstborn son — provided the child is certified by the Family's appointed physician as physically and genetically capable of continuing the Falcone bloodline. Should the heir be found unfit, the inheritance shall pass to the next eligible heir, as determined by the Don's discretion." he droned, his tone one of practiced neutrality.

Serena's posture straightened, her expression one of pure triumph.

She shoved the legal document toward my face and mocked me once more, a cruel twist to her lips.

Lorenzo and Carmela stared at me with a shared, visceral disgust that tightened their features into masks of contempt.

"You have a black heart, Valeria," Lorenzo accused, his voice heavy with venom.

He cursed me for the audacity of trying to steal Serena's moment of victory.

"I will not allow the Falcone bloodline to wither inside your weak, fragile body," he declared.

Isabella, Dante's sister, stepped forward, her face a mask of false sympathy.

She slandered me in front of the entire parlor, her voice pitched to carry, ensuring every ear caught its poison.

"We all know you entertained other men behind the Don's back," she claimed.

A low murmur stirred through the room as the surrounding mafia wives and Associates began to whisper.

They openly spread rumors about my alleged infidelity right in front of me.

"Just sign the divorce papers and spare yourself the embarrassment," one of them urged from the crowd.

I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms, the small pain a welcome anchor.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Dr. Enzo.

He was the Family's bound physician and a highly skilled mob doctor, whose loyalty was to the truth alone.

I ordered him to bring a full medical team and diagnostic equipment to the estate immediately.

"Prepare to examine Serena's child," I told him, my tone leaving no room for refusal.

The hard leather of Lorenzo's shoe scraped a piercing shriek from the Sicilian marble, and the pressure of his movement stirred the air against my cheek a half-second before his hand struck.

He slapped the phone from my grasp with vicious force.

"Are you trying to put a curse on a newborn heir?!" he roared, spit flying from his lips.

He threatened to destroy me if the boy was harmed in any way.

My phone struck the marble floor with a sound like cracking ice, the screen branching into a thousand fractured lines.

The back of my hand throbbed with a dull, angry heat from his strike.

Still, I did not flinch.

I looked at Lorenzo with a dead, empty stare.

"Once Dr. Enzo has completed his examination," I stated, each word falling like a hammer on a coffin nail, "you'll see exactly why Serena's 'heir' will never inherit a damn thing."

Chapter 3

Valeria POV

Half an hour later, Dr. Enzo and two assistants entered through the double doors of the estate's medical wing.

They moved with a nervous haste, their faces pale and slick with a fine sheen of sweat.

I locked my eyes on the infant, who was swaddled so tightly in Serena's arms as to be immobile.

My voice cut through their anxiety as I commanded Dr. Enzo to run a comprehensive genetic and physiological screening at once.

"Are the baby's heart and lungs functioning as they should?" Carmela nervously asked the doctor.

Dr. Enzo moved to check the infant's vitals. As he began to unwrap the tight swaddling to examine the lower body, his hands suddenly went still. A flicker of profound shock crossed his professional features, but Serena's hand shot out, the coarse wool of the blanket snagging on her rings as she pulled it back over the child before anyone else could see. She quickly announced that the cardiopulmonary systems were perfectly healthy.

Serena relaxed her shoulders, letting out a breath of smug relief.

She started boasting about her rigorous pregnancy routine.

She claimed she had taken ancient folk remedies to guarantee a boy.

She even bragged about drinking Lorenzo's morning urine and club soda, wearing the grotesque admission like a medal of honor.

Lorenzo turned to me, his eyes smoldering.

"You ungrateful wretch!" he spat, and the slap was not a sharp crack but a heavy, wet thud that sent a vibration through my jawbone.

My head snapped to the side from the force of the blow.

He threw the divorce papers at my feet.

"Sign them and get out of my sight!" he demanded.

I refused to sign.

Instead, I demanded a second, immediate DNA test to be conducted here, on these premises.

Carmela watched furiously as Serena stumbled forward, her balance lost for a moment, and her hands found my shoulders, her manicured nails pressing like thorns into the fabric of my dress.

"You forged the previous documents to ruin my life!" she accused me.

She barked at Dr. Enzo to run the test right now, her voice shrill with a rising hysteria.

She threatened me in front of everyone, spitting the words in my face.

"If the results confirm Dante is the father, you will abort your pregnancy!" she said.

"You will sign the divorce papers and vanish from the Syndicate forever!"

Not a single member of the Falcone family objected to this barbaric demand; they watched with a cold, silent approval.

Isabella snorted in disgust.

She took a clumsy step, her hand reaching for my hair, but her wrist was thin and I threw her arm aside with a force that made her stumble back. Seeing my defiance, Lorenzo drew his silver-plated revolver, aiming it directly at my stomach. He used his authority as a former Capo to bark orders at the surrounding Soldiers, forcing my loyal guards to stand down. "Get her in the SUV outside the clinic doors!" he roared. Isabella grabbed my arm, dragging me under the shadow of her father's gun.

She intended to force me to a back-alley clinic for an abortion.

I fought back fiercely, kicking and thrashing against her grip, my movements hampered by the gun trained on my womb.

I refused to let them touch my unborn child.

The Falcone family coldly declared that I had insulted the greatest contributor to their bloodline.

They said I must abort my child as penance for my supposed jealousy.

A surge of maternal instinct drove me to viciously bite Isabella's arm.

I twisted around and screamed at Dr. Enzo to speak the truth-to say what he saw during the physical examination and to pull the infant's full birth medical file.

Serena ran up behind me and kicked me hard in the back.

I crashed against the SUV's heavy steel door frame.

The impact bruised my eye, sending a starburst of white-hot pain through my skull.

Dr. Enzo caught my desperate, furious gaze.

He froze in his tracks, the color draining from his face.

His conscience at last broke his silence.

He pulled up the hospital's secure medical database on his tablet, retrieving the raw diagnostic files from Serena's delivery.

He read the obstetrician's hidden notes, and his breath hitched, an audible catch of air in the quiet room.

He panicked and shouted for them to stop.

"You cannot abort her child!" he yelled.

The SUV halted with a lurch.

Lorenzo impatiently questioned the doctor's sudden outburst.

Dr. Enzo swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing in terror.

He handed the glowing tablet to Lorenzo and urged him to read it before doing something unforgivable.

Lorenzo snatched it impatiently, his eyes scanning the digital text.

A second later, the blood drained from Lorenzo's face, leaving a waxy, pallid mask. His pupils shrank to pinpricks, lost in a field of white.

Carmela ripped the tablet from her husband's hands.

She glanced at it and began to shake violently, as if she had been struck by a current.

She stared at Serena in a state of stunned disbelief.

Isabella took the device next.

She froze as she read the medical notes, the blood leaving her lips.

"This is impossible," she muttered.

Serena grabbed the tablet from Isabella, her movements jerky and uncoordinated.

She laughed nervously and questioned their reactions.

She insisted she was a traditional woman and the child could only be Dante's heir.

I stepped out of the vehicle, wiping a single drop of blood from my brow.

I coldly instructed Serena to read the final line of the birth diagnostic file on the screen.

The medical file clearly stated the patient exhibited severe congenital reproductive system anomalies.

It confirmed the presence of severe bilateral cryptorchidism and a catastrophic chromosomal mutation-XXY syndrome.

In short, the child was genetically sterile, incapable of ever continuing the Falcone bloodline.

Serena's face drained of all color.

She trembled and asked Lorenzo and Carmela what this meant.

Lorenzo's face turned a dark purple with rage, the veins standing out like cords in his neck.

He turned on Serena and demanded an answer.

Serena shook her head frantically, backing away like a cornered animal.

She launched herself at me, her hands grabbing the collar of my dress.

"You altered the report to ruin my son!" she screamed.
