Chapter 1 of When My Husband Cheated With His Assistant, I Bankrupted Him

The restaurant hadn't changed in six years. Same white tablecloths, same view of Midtown glittering through floor-to-ceiling windows. This was where Keaton got down on one knee, where I said yes before he even finished the question. I picked this table on purpose. Table twelve, by the window. I wanted him to remember.

I ordered a glass of wine at seven. Then another at eight. By nine, the waiter stopped asking if I wanted to see the dessert menu. He just refilled my water and looked at me the way people look at something breakable.

At nine-forty, my phone buzzed. Not a call. A tagged photo, posted by a colleague from Keaton's office. *Client dinner grind never stops!* Keaton in a charcoal suit, laughing, his hand resting low on a woman's back like it belonged there. Ariya Webb. I recognized her from the company directory Lawrence had once shown me, back when Keaton hired his new executive assistant and asked me, almost proudly, if I remembered her name from college.

I did remember. I just never said so.

I paid the bill. Three hundred and twelve dollars for a dinner I ate alone. I left a good tip. Then I drove home, hung up my coat, and sat down at my desk with the leather ledger I'd started keeping the week I first caught him lying about a business trip that wasn't a business trip at all.

I opened it to a fresh page and wrote the date. Then: *Anniversary. Six years. No call.*

He came home at 5:52 in the morning. I know because I was still at the kitchen table when his key turned in the lock.

His collar was crooked. His tie was gone entirely. He didn't smell like a client dinner.

"You're up," he said, like that was the strange part.

"I was at the restaurant until ten. Table twelve." I kept my voice flat. "Where you proposed."

He had the decency to wince. Just barely. Then it passed, and something colder settled into his face, something that had clearly been rehearsed on the drive home.

"Raelyn. I think we both know this isn't working." He said it like a doctor delivering a diagnosis. "I want a divorce."

I didn't move. "That's it? No preamble?"

"What's the point of dragging it out." He loosened his cuffs, already halfway to the bedroom in his head. "I'll be fair. A settlement. More than fair, honestly, considering—"

"Considering what." My voice didn't rise. It dropped, instead, the way it does when I've stopped being surprised by something.

"Considering everything," he said, waving a hand like the six years, the trust fund, the calls to my father's old partners, the check that kept his company breathing when it was three weeks from a shutdown, were all just *everything*, a rounding error.

I stood up. Smoothed my robe. "I'll agree to the divorce. One condition."

Something flickered in him — hope, maybe, that I'd make this easy.

"Get on your knees," I said. "Thank me. Out loud. For every dollar, every favor, every phone call my father made so your company didn't die in its first year. Then you can walk away. With nothing."

The hope died fast. His jaw worked. "You're out of your mind."

"I'm the most rational person in this kitchen."

"I built that company."

"On my collateral."

He left without another word, the door slamming hard enough to rattle the glass cabinet.

Seventy-two hours later, Marcus Reed's firm filed the petition. By the next morning, a tech blog ran a piece calling me a "cold, controlling heiress" standing in the way of a self-made founder's happiness. I read it over black coffee at the diner near Lawrence's office, and I didn't feel my hands shake once.

Then I called my cousin.

Lawrence Nelson had always been steadier than me — the kind of steady that came from watching disasters coming and never once saying *I told you so* when they arrived anyway. He met me at his office that evening, sleeves rolled, a legal pad already out.

I handed him the ledger without a word.

He read for a long time. Dates. Receipts. Screenshots I'd printed and taped in, timestamps beside every one.

"You've been building this for a while," he said finally.

"Since I stopped believing him."

He closed the ledger, careful, like it was evidence in a case he already knew he'd win. "This is enough to start."

"Then start."

He was already reaching for his phone before I finished the sentence — notice of appearance, discovery requests, a forensic accountant he trusted from a case years back. I watched him work and felt something settle in my chest that wasn't relief, exactly. Just clarity.

The war was declared. I intended to win it.
