Chapter 1
The new intern decided to play doctor on her own, misdiagnosed a patient, and it cost someone their life.
Instead of helping, my boyfriend covered for her and pinned the whole mess on me.
The hospital wasted no time in firing me, and the patient's family, blinded by rage, broke into my place and beat me to death.
When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day it all went down.
"It's nothing serious. Just get some rest, and you'll be fine!"
As soon as I walked in, I spotted Lucy Sutherland sitting in my chair, giving a patient her expert opinion.
Without missing a beat, I grabbed the report and shoved her aside. "Who gave you the right to play doctor behind my back? What if something goes wrong. Are you ready to take the fall?"
***
"It's just a migraine, nothing too serious," Lucy said, wearing a white coat as she sat in my chair, casually reviewing the patient's chart.
In front of her, a patient was clutching his head in pain, his face twisted in agony.
The scene was all too familiar, and before I knew it, I blurted out, "Who gave you the authority to treat patients on your own?"
I hurriedly snatched the report from her hands. But a voice came from behind me before I could say anything else. "Tina, don't be so overbearing. It's just a minor illness. Let Lucy handle it."
The moment I saw William Lunniker, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I had somehow come back to life.
William was my boyfriend and my boss.
Lucy was just an intern assigned to me for training.
In my past life, Lucy had taken advantage of my absence to treat a patient on her own.
I was furious like now, but William insisted that rookies needed more hands-on experience and told me to back off.
I refused, citing hospital regulations, but William lashed out at me, calling me too domineering for not giving the intern a chance to learn. He even ordered Lucy to handle the patient right before me.
Backed by William, Lucy arrogantly prescribed medication without so much as running a single test. She sent the patient home.
But what she thought was a minor headache turned out to be a brain hemorrhage.
Less than two hours after leaving the hospital, the patient died from it.
After the incident, the patient's family, consumed with rage, stormed into the hospital, demanding Lucy's life as retribution.
But when faced with the hospital's inquiry and the family's wrath, William shoved me into the spotlight.
"Tina, this is all your fault! Lucy is just an intern. She doesn't know any better. Why did you let her treat the patient?"
Lucy was crying. "Tina, you forced me to treat the patient, and now he's dead because of it."
The evidence was clear as Lucy had used my computer to prescribe the medication.
I couldn't argue my way out with William and Lucy testifying against me.
The medical accident caused a huge uproar, and the hospital immediately fired me.
The devastated family, led by none other than Lucy, broke into my home and beat me to death with whatever they could find.
I still couldn't forget how, as I lay there being brutally attacked, Lucy stood by, gloating. "Beat her to death! She's the one who killed your loved one."
As I took my last breaths, I saw William holding Lucy tenderly, whispering, "Don't worry, it's over now. You weren't too scared, were you?"
Their smiles were forever etched in my memory.
Remembering my past life's despair, I didn't hesitate for a second this time.
I shoved Lucy aside and glared at William, my voice cold and full of fury. "If something goes wrong, will you take responsibility?"
Chapter 2
William was stunned by my outburst, and Lucy, standing beside him, immediately tore up, looking pitiful and wronged.
William's temper flared in an instant. "Tina, what's gotten into you? Are you out of your mind? "What did Lucy ever do to you? And now you're laying hands on her? Have you no shame?"
Watching him comfort Lucy, holding her hand, I couldn't help but sneer and thought, "He has the nerve to ask if I have no shame? I just pushed her a little, and he practically cradled her in his arms. Who is the one without shame here?"
Ever since Lucy started her internship at our hospital, William, my supposed boyfriend, had been bending over backward for her.
Their constant flirting disgusted me even now.
I said, "If you care so much about Lucy, why don't you two just be together? I'll gladly step aside. But today, this patient is not your responsibility!"
William's face turned red with anger at my words. "Tina, I'm just calling you out on your bullying. Is this how you treat an intern? Even though I'm your boyfriend, I won't just stand by and watch you behave like this. Apologize to Lucy now."
His eyes locked onto mine, making it clear he wouldn't let this go until I apologized.
But I couldn't care less about these two shameless fools.
I sat back down and quickly ordered a series of tests for the patient, urging him to get them done right away.
The patient, after all, was innocent in this mess.
As much as I wanted to tear William and Lucy apart, the priority was to get the patient adequately diagnosed. Only then could the proper treatment be given.
If a brain hemorrhage was caught and treated quickly, there was no reason it had to be fatal.
However, as the patient took the test orders from me, he was shocked.
Lucy had only prescribed him cheap medication, costing just a few dozen dollars.
But the tests I ordered were going to run him at least a few hundred dollars.
The patient looked at the bill and immediately got upset. "Are you trying to scam me? It was only a few dozen dollars earlier, and now it's suddenly a few hundred dollars?"
Before I could explain, William slammed his hand down on my desk. "Tina, you're just ordering random tests to squeeze money out of the patient. That's against the rules! Even if you're my girlfriend, I won't hesitate to report you!"
Lucy looked at me and said, "Tina, so this is all about me getting in the way of your cash flow? But it's not easy for patients to earn money. How can you do this?"
It was unbelievable. I never imagined these two could be so good at twisting the truth.
Lucy, especially, was acting like some sort of saint. It made me sick just looking at her.
Her medical skills were barely passable. She mistook a brain hemorrhage for a simple headache and didn't even bother to run basic tests.
And when things went wrong, she only cried and played the victim. I was so angry I could've slapped her right then and there!
But I was busy trying to reason with the patient, explaining that his situation was serious and that he might have a brain hemorrhage.
After this whole commotion, though, the patient became even more reluctant. "It's just a headache. Why are you acting like I'm on death's doorstep?"
William, adding fuel to the fire, shoved me aside. "Get out of here! Are you trying to ruin the hospital's reputation? Lucy, come over here and treat him!"
I scoffed, "She's just an intern. She needs a supervising doctor with her to treat patients. What you're doing is against the rules."
The moment I mentioned regulations, William's voice grew even louder. "You've got the nerve to talk about rules when you're the one doing shady things? Am I not a doctor? Am I not qualified to supervise Lucy?"
His reaction didn't surprise me one bit. After all, he had said the same thing in my previous life.
But I kept my cool and asked, "And if something goes wrong, will you take responsibility?"
Without a moment's hesitation, William shot back. "I'm the associate director! Do you really think I can't handle the consequences?"
With that, he grabbed Lucy and started prescribing medication to the patient.
I tried to speak up several times, but William and Lucy shouted me down. Even the patient joined in, cursing me as if I were some heartless monster, accusing me of only caring about money.
Good advice often fell on deaf ears, especially when it was unwelcome.
Seeing that my good intentions were being twisted into something vile, I eventually gave up trying to intervene.
After they were done, the patient even threatened to report me and said I should get ready to be fired.
I watched him leave with a blank expression. Little did he know, he might not get the chance to report me.
William turned to me, his tone self-righteous. "If you apologize to Lucy right now, and she forgives you, I'll pretend this never happened."
The sheer absurdity of his demand almost made me laugh.
Ever since Lucy arrived at the hospital, William had been groveling at her feet, all because she had some connections.
I said, "Sorry, but if you enjoy playing the lapdog, that's your thing. I'm not into it."
Chapter 3
William slapped me across the face as soon as the words left my mouth.
"You really think I won't put you in your place just because you're my girlfriend?" He spat, glaring at me, clearly infuriated by what I had just said.
Lucy, who was standing beside him, chimed in softly, "Tina, how could you say that to William?"
My cheek burned from the slap, but I couldn't care less.
Any feelings I had for this man had long since withered away.
"I'll remember this slap. One day, I'll make sure you pay for it." Not just for this slap, but for everything he did to ruin my life in my past one, I would make him pay dearly.
"Tina, William didn't mean it. Please don't be mad at him," Lucy cooed, her sweet voice making my skin crawl.
"What? Can't stand it when someone talks back? You're young, yet instead of learning something useful, you spend your time flirting with someone else's boyfriend. Have you no shame?"
I spat on the floor, my disgust plain. "Just looking at you makes me sick. Get lost."
Lucy's eyes filled with tears again, and she whimpered, "Tina, how could you say that to me?"
William's fury flared up even more. "Tina, you're the one who needs to get lost! I'm reporting this to the director right away. You can start packing your things because you're about to be fired."
He then pulled Lucy over to my desk. "From now on, Lucy, this is your workspace."
William certainly had the power to make that happen, especially since I had crossed Lucy.
Getting fired seemed inevitable, but I wasn't planning on sticking around anyway.
As I packed up my belongings, William watched me smugly. "If you apologize to Lucy now, there's still room for negotiation. If you agree to let her have her way from now on, I might just forgive you."
"Forgive me?" I couldn't help but laugh. They were the last people I was interested in forgiving.
I sneered and was just about to gather my things and leave when the door was violently kicked open.
"It's her! She's the doctor who killed my husband! Give me back my husband!"
The woman's voice was filled with rage as she and a group of people charged at Lucy, knocking William to the ground in the process.
The room was filled with screams and cries of pain.
I recognized the woman immediately. She was the patient's wife.
In my past life, she was the one who had beaten me to death.
Lucy's screams pierced the air as she pointed at me, shouting, "You've got the wrong person! I'm just an intern! She's the one who treated your husband!"
The woman turned her furious gaze toward me, and I knew I was in trouble.
Just as I was about to make a run for it, the hospital security arrived, breaking up the chaotic scene.
"There's no justice in this world! My husband had a brain hemorrhage, but this heartless quack didn't even run any tests. Just said it was a simple headache! My husband died in agony because of her! She must take responsibility for this!"
The woman collapsed to the floor, sobbing and wailing, her grief palpable.
William and Lucy's faces drained of color, their expressions a mix of shock and disbelief.
"What's going on here?" The director arrived, his face grimed with anger as he surveyed the scene.
In the delicate balance of doctor-patient relationships, a medical mishap like this was serious.
"I don't know! I'm just an intern. It's all Tina's fault!" Lucy's voice trembled with fear, but she didn't hesitate to pin the blame on me.
William quickly chimed in, "Yes, I can vouch for that."
Then he shoved me and whispered menacingly, "Take the blame for this, and I won't hold it against you. I'll even stay as your boyfriend."
I nearly laughed out loud at his words. In my previous life, I fell for his lies, and it cost me everything, my job, my life, everything. As for staying his girlfriend? What a joke. I wasn't about to make that mistake again.
The director fixed his gaze on me. "Is that true?"
Without hesitation, I shook my head. "No, it's not. Lucy insisted on treating the patient, and when I refused, William said he would take responsibility if anything went wrong. That's what led to this tragedy."
"That's nonsense! You're slandering me!" Lucy burst into tears, her sobs echoing through the room.
Losing his temper, William shouted, "Tina, what's wrong with you? How can you pin your heartless actions on Lucy? Have you no shame?"
I couldn't help but smirk at the pair putting on their little performance. "And don't you feel guilty when you say that?"
William glared at me, putting on an air of righteousness. "Tina, even though you're my girlfriend, this mess is entirely your fault. The prescription was printed from your computer. That's proof."
Lucy, feigning concern, added, "Tina, this is serious. You should apologize to the family and hope for their forgiveness. Otherwise, you might end up in jail."
Even though I had lived through this once before, watching their shameless act still made me marvel at how low they could stoop.
Last time, they framed me, and I was the one who paid the price. But this time, they weren't going to get away with it.
I sneered and walked over to the corner, picking up the phone that had been recording the entire scene.
"Sorry, but I've recorded everything that happened right here. If anyone's headed to jail, it's the two of you."
