Chapter 2

As soon as I finished speaking, a wave of exhaustion washed over me.

Juan Sanchez, the Famiglia Medico, hurriedly injected me with a cardiac injection.

The sharp pain immediately brought me back to my senses.

Juan wiped off the sweat on his forehead and said, "Ms. Cabrera, you must try to stay awake as much as you can. If you pass out now, you may never wake up again.

"Think about your husband and your baby. They both need you."

Don also spoke up in a stern, authoritative voice, "You saved my life, and I will never forget it.

"When you've recovered, I will give you everything that you deserve. The child in your womb will also be my godson.

"Hold on. I've already sent someone to find Fabio."

I forced a small smile on my lips after hearing Don's words. However, I wasn't as naive as he thought.

The warm gush of blood from between my thighs during the explosion had already told me everything I needed to know. At the very least, I knew that my baby could not be saved anymore.

And as for Fabio, I knew that he would never come.

As if to prove my point, the Soldato that Don sent suddenly returned alone to report. He kept his head lowered and didn't dare to look Don in the eyes.

"Where is he?" Don asked with a frown on his face, sounding obviously displeased.

The Soldato's voice trembled as he replied, "Don Romero, Fabio… refused to return. He said, 'That's such a terrible script. Tell the actress to stop bothering me'..."

The Soldato was practically bent over 90 degrees as sweat kept dripping down his forehead.

I knew that Fabio's words had to have been a lot more cruel and harsher than what the Soldato said—he just probably didn't dare to quote Fabio word for word.

After all, Reina had been slandering me for a long time, and now, Fabio always thought that all of my pain and suffering were nothing more than just an act to try and get his attention.

In my past life, when I begged him for help, he accused me of coveting the position of the Underboss's wife.

Now, when Don told him to return, he said that I was just putting on an act.

If he only cared about Reina now, then what was the point of his pursuing me so relentlessly in the first place?

Sadness and anger rose up within me. I cocked my head to the side and coughed up even more blood.

Juan's face turned somber.

"Don, Mrs. Lopez is in critical condition now! Her life can't be saved just by medicine alone if there's nobody who can trigger her will to live!"

Don's gaze landed on my pale face. He couldn't suppress the fire in his chest anymore.

He took out the encrypted phone, the one only accessible to a select few, and slammed it into the Soldato's hand. His voice was as cold as ice as he said, "Use this to call Fabio.

"Nobody in the Famiglia will fail to recognize my number. If he still refuses to come over, then execute him as a traitor!"

Don was truly furious this time.

He was usually very heavily guarded, yet, in this situation, not a single Guardia Del Corpo was with him.

I had then risked my life to save him, but he wasn't even able to get my husband to come back.

This wasn't just negligence anymore. It was tantamount to a blatant challenge to Don's authority!

I was hurriedly rushed into a VIP ward at the hospital, kept alive by strong medication and medical equipment, awaiting further surgery.

When the Soldato spoke again, I was still half-conscious, but I managed to hear him anyway.

"Don Romero, Mr. Lopez still refused to return. But… He sent an assistant over instead."

I forced myself to open my eyes and saw Reina's personal assistant, Ana Rodriguez.

Ana used to be my personal assistant.

However, when I was pregnant, Reina bribed her into sabotaging my car brakes, and the accident that happened afterward nearly killed me.

Luckily, the paramedics appeared just in time, and I managed to survive.

I hadn't wanted to forgive this traitor. Just as I was about to punish her, Reina stopped me.

I still remembered that day like it was yesterday.

Reina wrapped her hands around Fabio's arm and scolded me in a righteous voice.

"How could you be so unreasonable, Sirena? Ana doesn't even know how to drive. How could she possibly know how to sabotage your car brakes?

"You can't convince me that you didn't orchestrate this entire accident by yourself. Even if you wanted to risk your life to win Fabio's attention back, you should never have tried dragging Ana into this!"

Then, she turned to Fabio and said in a soft voice, "Fabio, why don't we let Ana be my personal assistant instead? I won't get mad at her for ridiculous reasons, unlike someone else here."

Chapter 3

Hatred surged in my chest as I looked at Ana's face. My body wouldn't stop trembling from the intense emotions in my chest.

However, Ana thought that I was trembling because of guilt.

She had initially been somewhat frightened by my bloodied appearance. But now, spoke with righteous indignation and said, "Stop pretending to be hurt, Sirena Cabrera.

"Mr. Lopez is now accompanying Reina and specifically said that nobody is to disturb them. He told me to pass on this message to you.

"'Enough is enough. Stop making things too ugly for yourself.'

"He said that he never wanted to be so heartless toward you in the first place, but you were always so jealous and making a huge fuss, and even pretending to be gravely hurt. What is your child going to think when he grows up and learns what a hysterical woman his mother really is after all?"

When Ana finished speaking, Don's face was filled with murderous intent. Yet, Ana was still oblivious as to who he really was.

She even pointed at Don, who hadn't had time to change out of his bloodied clothes, and jeered, "And who is this filthy man, Sirena?

"Did you think that your pitiful act wasn't going to work anymore, so you thought of finding a random beggar on the street to make Fabio angry? You really have such terrible taste.

"What do you think is going to happen if I told Fabio that you were rolling in the sheets with this beggar, even while pregnant? Do you think he's going to chop you up and feed you to the dogs? Or, do you think that he's going to throw you into the sea to feed the sharks?"

Then, Ana began laughing loudly like a maniac, thinking that she had seen through my act.

After all, Don was now bloodied and disheveled, and she never thought to associate him with the important figure she imagined him to be.

That was why she assumed that the highly feared and respected Don was none other than my affair partner!

A cold snort interrupted her laughter.

Two Soldati immediately stepped forward and pinned Ana to the ground. It wasn't until the cold barrel of the gun was pressed against her forehead that she realized she had offended someone she could never have afforded.

Just as she was about to plead for mercy, the gun was slapped harshly against her mouth, and she was dragged out of the ward.

"Break her legs and lock her up. Take a photo and send it to Fabio," Don said, his voice as cold as ice. "Tell him to come here himself. I'd love to see just how important his matter is for him to abandon Ms. Cabrera without a care in the world!"

I immediately noticed how Don was referring to me now.

I was no longer "El Capo Lopez's wife", but "Ms. Cabrera" now instead.

This was the outcome that I wanted.

The lines were now clearly drawn in Don's eyes. I was his savior, and Fabio was merely a traitor about to be dealt with.

It had been an extremely risky move, but in the end, it finally paid off.

I was wheeled into the operating theater.

After regaining my consciousness, the nurse by my bed carefully helped me sit up.

"Ms. Cabrero, the attack on Don has alarmed all the Famiglia's top brass, and he has already returned to the headquarters to handle things," she said in a low voice.

"Before he left, he specifically gave orders for you to stay here and recover in peace. He said that he would personally come back to see you once he settled all his matters."

I nodded.

According to my memories from my past life, the attack on Don had indeed caused a huge upheaval in the underworld. All Famiglias involved in the attack had then been thoroughly wiped out.

Fabio was only then promoted to Underboss after the dust had settled.

Seeing that Don had so many things to attend to, it was quite rare for him to still have time to think about me.

All I had to do now was wait patiently.

Now that I had calmed down, I was just about to speak when I suddenly heard hurried footsteps outside the door.

Before I could even see who it was, a tight slap landed on my cheek.

It was Fabio.

His expression was dark as he glared at me with an icy, steely stare.

"You're such an evil witch, Sirena Cabrera! How dare you lay a finger on Ana just because you wanted to see me!

"Do you know how hard Reina cried when she saw that Ana's legs were broken? How did you ever turn out like this? I really regret making you my wife!"

My face was still stinging from the slap. I looked up at him and said calmly, "Really? Then let's get a divorce."

I sniffled and fought to keep my tears at bay.

I had been suppressing those words in my chest for a very long time.

At first, I thought of only saying it to him after Don had punished him. But now, I couldn't hold back anymore.

The pain from my past life and humiliation now was more than I could bear. They overlapped each other, the pain and agony weighing heavily on my chest, making it hard for me to breathe.

Obviously, Fabio never expected me to bring up divorce with him at all. He stared at me, his arrogant expression wavering for just a second.

While I was trying to gauge his reaction, Reina appeared.

She purposely pulled her collar lower to show off the love bite on her collarbones.

Clearly, even an attack on the Don that shocked the entire underworld hadn't managed to dampen their spirits one bit.

As long as she was there, Fabio could no longer look at anyone else.

He lovingly wrapped an arm around Reina's waist, the hand that had slapped me so harshly and cruelly earlier now being extremely tender and gentle with her.

"What are you doing here? The hospital is full of germs. You should be waiting for me at home."

Reina's eyes were slightly red as she shook her head, saying, "Home is too cold without you there, Fabio. I just wanted to see you as quickly as possible.

"But I heard you guys quarreling before I even came in. Was it because of me? If I caused any of you any trouble, then I can leave the Famiglia at once.

"I just want both of you to be happy. It's fine if I suffer just a little."

Then, tears began rolling down her cheeks.

Fabio felt extremely sorry for her and tried comforting her.

"It was Sirena who went overboard this time. A lunatic like her does not deserve to be my wife or a mother.

"When the baby is born, I will immediately strip her of her parenting rights. I'll only feel at ease if my child is raised by you instead."

Chapter 4

I forced myself to sit up in the hospital bed.

"So you want to give the child to Reina? Dream on, Fabio Lopez! Your child is already dead!"

I laughed hoarsely and brokenly at that.

Fabio frowned, impatience and displeasure surfacing on his face.

"That's enough! You still think it's not enough after breaking Ana's legs, now you're cursing your own unborn child next? How could you! Sirena Cabrera, I really think that you should spend a few days in the asylum by yourself until you finally wake up!"

The last bit of warmth in my heart died, and I didn't show any expression on my face.

"And what right do you have to yell at me for cursing my child? The baby had already completely taken form when it died! All because you abandoned your duties, the baby lost its chance to be brought into this world!

"But its biggest relief is not having to address a scoundrel like you as its father!"

"It's dead?" Fabio exclaimed in shock and disbelief as he stared at my belly. "That's impossible. Your due date is very soon. How could you just say it was dead?"

I laughed coldly and pulled off my covers.

My belly was flat. There was nothing in it.

The baby could not be saved because I'd lost too much blood. When the doctors pulled the fetus out of me, its hands and feet were already fully formed.

Fabio instinctively released Reina and stumbled over to me.

Just as he was about to feel my belly, Reina suddenly screamed, "Don't listen to that crazy woman, Fabio Lopez!

"I didn't want to say it at first, but… But I refuse to see you getting tricked by her again!

"Why did you think I insisted that you come with me to the fashion show? That was because I didn't dare to go out on my own! I found out that Sirena had been sleeping around with random men behind your back! If it weren't for your protection, she would definitely have tried to kill me!

"She only lost her baby now because she was sleeping around! That's why the baby is gone!"

Shock appeared on Fabio's face. Then, his expression darkened in a frightening manner.

"So, that's what it was… No wonder you refused to let me touch you while you were pregnant for the past eight months. It was because you were seeing other men behind my back! That's the truth, isn't it?"

I stared at his smug, know-it-all expression on his face, and felt the last of my hope in my eyes die out.

"Use your brain and think properly. Today was the day Don Romero was attending a banquet. Don got attacked, and I saved his life. Meanwhile, where were you, as the Capo?

"If you never brought your Guardie Del Corpo with you to the fashion show for Reina's sake, my child would not have died—"

However, Fabio refused to believe me.

A split second later, he pulled his gun out and exclaimed, "You're still lying to me!

"What Don are you talking about? You're only referring to the man you cheated on me with, aren't you? You despicable people, how dare you take me for a fool?

"Spit it out! Where is that bastard? If you refuse to tell me, I'm going to sell you at the black market auction. Let's see if you're still going to keep him a secret or not!

"As for that bastard, as long as he's still here in Sicil City, I swear to god that I will find him, and I will chop off every inch of his flesh and feed it to my dogs!"

The cold barrel of the gun was pressed hard against my temple, but it was still a thousand times less cold than the chill of disappointment I felt in my heart.

Just then, a fierce, angry voice sounded at the door.

"You've got quite the nerve, Fabio Lopez. I am that 'bastard' that you speak of.

"So, tell me. How exactly are you planning to chop off my flesh and feed me to your dogs?"
