Chapter 1
My name is Janet Chance, and I am a researcher focusing on cancer drug development. I have a blissful family life and a career worth fighting for.
However, just as I am about to go save a life using my newly researched drug, I discover that the car specifically used to transport the drug has inexplicably disappeared.
Upon checking the surveillance footage, I learn that my high school classmate, Melissa Lane, has driven it away.
"What do you mean it's your car? This is my husband's car!"
I snap back anxiously. "Give me back my car! Right now!"
Just as I finish speaking, I hear a crowd's mocking laughter coming from the other end of the phone.
"Do you know who you're talking to?"
"Your car? This car belongs to the wealthiest man in the country!"
Melissa immediately adds, "I'm about to marry the wealthiest man in Azlude! He was worried about my safety, so he specifically allowed me to take this car.
"He told me it's very well protected with its bulletproof glass. How dare you say this car is yours, you penniless loser?"
In order to take back the drug, I have no choice but to rush over to Melissa's wedding venue.
That is when I see the man embracing her in the poster is Samuel Fuller, who is none other than the husband I have been married to for the past three years.
My name was Janet Chance, a researcher focusing on cancer drug development. I had a happy family life and a career worth fighting for.
Just as I was about to rush off to save a life using my newly developed drug, I realized that the car meant to transport the drug had mysteriously disappeared.
After checking the surveillance footage, I saw that my high school classmate, Melissa Lane, had been the one to drive it away.
"What do you mean, your car? That car belongs to my husband!"
I demanded anxiously, exclaiming, "Return the car to me right now!"
I had barely finished speaking when I heard a crowd's mocking laughter coming from the other end of the phone.
"Do you know who you're talking to?"
"Your car? This car belongs to the wealthiest man in the country!"
Melissa immediately added, "I'm about to marry the richest man in Azlude! He was concerned about my safety, so he specifically instructed me to take this car.
"He told me the vehicle's well protected with its bulletproof glass. How dare you claim this car is yours, you penniless loser?"
Since I needed to take back the drug, I had no choice but to rush over to Melissa's wedding venue.
There, I saw that the man embracing her in the poster was none other than Samuel Fuller, the husband I had been married to for the past three years.
At first, I thought something was wrong with my eyesight. Why else would I be seeing my husband on a wedding poster with another woman?
However, in the next second, I spotted Melissa walking onto the stage with a bouquet in hand. She spoke proudly to the guests. "Everyone, welcome to my wedding with Samuel Fuller, the wealthiest man in the country!"
Digging out my phone, I stared at the message that Samuel had just sent me half an hour ago.
"Honey, I miss you so much! I have a ton of work to do at the company today, so I'll check in with you later! Remember to let me know when you're coming back home. I love you."
I felt as though I had been dunked in ice-cold water.
I thought back to the days I had spent in the research laboratory in the past few years. A lot of the time, I was so busy with my research and drug development that I wouldn't return home. Sometimes, it would even be half a year before I went home.
Nonetheless, despite knowing that I was a workaholic, Samuel had still proposed to me. In order to maintain our relationship during our time apart, he would report to me daily about his schedule. This also made me feel more at ease.
Every time we were separated, he would anxiously inquire when I would be returning home. I used to think it was because he cared deeply about me and missed me terribly.
Now, however, I realized how absurd those thoughts had been.
The dazzling lights from above illuminated Melissa, causing her to shine brilliantly from the countless handwoven diamonds on her wedding gown. The sight practically screamed opulence and wealth.
"Melissa, I'm so envious of you for being able to marry the wealthiest man in the country!"
"I heard he's a billionaire! Melissa, among all our classmates, you're probably living the best life right now!"
The crowd's praises had Melissa smugly lifting her chin. At the same time, she didn't forget to insult me. "Back then, wasn't Janet ranked first in academic achievements? Well, where is she now? She doesn't even dare show her face here!"
Upon hearing her words, the crowd nodded vigorously in agreement.
I, on the other hand, simply scoffed.
Years ago, if I hadn't handed the production rights for the most coveted drug I had developed then to Samuel, would he have been able to achieve his current achievements? He now held half the medical resources in the market and was a magnate in the medical industry.
Yet, he was using the resources he had gained from me to win the heart of another woman.
As the guests continued to chatter, Melissa's gaze abruptly locked onto me standing in the crowd.
"Oh dear! It seems I misspoke. Speaking of the devil, there she is!"
Immediately, everyone followed her gaze and turned to look at me.
Melissa's best friend pointed a finger at me while screaming shrilly, "How could you attend the wealthiest man's wedding in such attire? Don't you find it humiliating?"
I looked down at the plain shirt I was wearing. Since I had been busy with my research the past few days, I hadn't gotten a chance to change out of the wrinkled outfit yet.
At that moment, Melissa pushed down her best friend's hand, saying with an aggrieved expression, "Don't blame her. Janet's probably here to ask me for the car."
Staring her straight in the eye, I said, "Seeing as you know why I'm here, hurry up and give me back the car. If you delay any longer, it'll be too late!"
The drug in the car was vital to the survival of the leading figure in the business world. His status was on a whole other level than Samuel, who appeared insignificant in comparison.
I had received an emergency summons this time because this big shot had suddenly had a flare-up while working and was now in a critical, life-threatening condition.
I tightened my grip on the car key. Back then, to make it easier for Samuel to pick me up from work, I had given him the spare key. Never would I have imagined that it would lead to such a ridiculous situation today.
Raising the key I held so everyone could see it, I said, "I brought the key. Just tell me where the car is, and I'll get it myself."
Chapter 2
Seemingly not at all expecting that I would have the car key, the crowd clamped their hands over their mouths in surprise.
Someone called out, "Don't tell me that really is Janet's car? Hurry up and return it to her then!"
Melissa stared at me, her gaze burning with disdain. "How ridiculous. What you're holding is nothing but a key. Who's to say it actually is that car's key?"
In response, I answered in an exasperated tone, "If I can unlock the car, then I'm driving it away."
Raising her chin arrogantly, Melissa replied, "Fine!"
With that, several of our classmates led me in the direction of the car. Along the way, many of them were placing bets.
"I bet 80 bucks that Janet's key won't be able to unlock the car."
"Then I'm betting 100 dollars."
Once we arrived at the car, I hastily used the key to unlock it, not wanting to waste another second. The moment the headlights lit up, Melissa's expression fell.
She exclaimed, "How is that possible?"
Unwilling to explain to her, I started the engines.
However, I was abruptly yanked away by Melissa, who yelled, "What's that in your trunk?"
Hearing that, I hurriedly got out of the car to close the trunk. It was only then that I recalled that I must have accidentally opened it earlier in my haste to unlock the doors.
Just as I was about to start the engine again, Melissa smashed the trunk open.
Everyone stared at her in shock. "Melissa, that's Janet's car… It isn't very nice of you to do that, is it?"
Melissa scoffed before retorting, "Her car? Nonsense! I bet she stole that key!"
The crowd then turned their disbelieving gaze to me.
Melissa went on, exclaiming, "Everyone, just look at what's in the trunk! You'll understand then!"
My heart skipped a beat as I cursed in my mind. That drug couldn't be exposed to light!
"Everyone, this drug is a new product developed by Samuel's company! This thief must have thought she could steal it and sell it off for a good price!"
Taking out a vial of the drug, she continued, "Look here! Samuel's products always have a 'J' carved on them, and this vial happens to have it too! Judging from the packaging, I think this is the drug that's going to be released to the market soon!"
The letter "J" was actually the initial for my name. I had the habit of labelling whatever new drugs I had formulated with it.
When I noticed bubbles forming in the liquid drug, I hollered, "Quick, put it back into the cooler box! Hurry up!"
Not only was the drug sensitive to light, but it also needed to be stored under cold temperatures. Otherwise, once the compounds in it started to decompose due to the heat, it would lose its efficacy.
Nonetheless, even after hearing my words, Melissa was unbothered. She shook the vial in my face, taunting, "Oh? And what if I don't put it back? I definitely won't allow a thief like you to steal the fruits of Samuel's company's research!"
I struggled with all my might and finally managed to break free of the crowd's grip on me. Dashing forward, I snatched the vial from Melissa and placed it back in the cooler box. Then, I hugged the cooler box to my chest and made a run for it.
Unfortunately, I was instantly surrounded by the crowd. I bellowed, "Get lost, all of you! If you delay me any longer, you won't be able to handle the consequences!"
They laughed at me. "Who do you think you're scaring? You're just a thief!"
Eyes becoming red-rimmed in my anxiety, I warned the crowd. "Trust me. You'll all regret it if you don't let me leave right now!"
While I was distracted, Melissa came closer and seized the cooler box from me before smashing it onto the floor. "Well, I'd like to see what the consequences are!"
As the cooler box crashed to the ground, the vials inside it spilled out, gaining a cheer from the crowd.
"That's it! Make sure she can't get anything at all from this!"
Their fawning behavior had Melissa nodding smugly.
Suddenly, a low-pitched male voice rang out from the back of the crowd. "What are you guys doing?"
Chapter 3
Curious, the crowd looked back, only to see Samuel, who had just returned from welcoming the wedding guests. But what truly caught their attention was the people who came with Samuel.
"Look! I can't believe that man's here! He's a representative of the most influential family in the military world, the Snows. And that guy next to him? He's a legend in the business world!"
"Oh my gosh! The military, political, and business world are all showing their respect toward Samuel."
"As expected of the wealthiest man in the country. He truly is the epitome of a winner in life."
When Samuel heard the crowd's chatter, a proud smirk tugged on his lips. Following that, he walked on ahead, not noticing how the crowd was blocking me.
Among everyone present, only I knew that the reason the military, business, and political circles afforded Samuel so much respect was because of me.
Or more accurately, it was because of my anti-cancer drug. It was a drug that would shake the entire pharmaceutical industry, perhaps even the world.
If it weren't for the government secretly protecting me and the special attention that leading figures in the business world paid me, I probably would have died during one of the countless assassination attempts on me.
After all, that was a drug that could potentially cure cancer, making it of paramount importance. Someone once estimated that if such a drug existed, it could be worth several trillions. That was not even taking into consideration what a huge step that would be in society's advancement.
Although the government had tried its best to keep everything a secret, some of the higher-ups still managed to get wind of it. Thanks to me, the Fuller family received preferential treatment, which also extended to Samuel's Fuller Group.
I sacrificed over a decade of my youth, only to produce three vials of this anti-cancer drug, all of which were now spilled across the ground. Staring at the scattered vials, I could only weep silently.
Having left the cold environment of the cooler box and been exposed to sunlight, the drugs had lost all efficacy and were completely useless.
Forcing myself to remain standing, I took out my phone and dialed a number I hadn't called in ages.
A man picked up, his tone cold and stern as he said, "Hello."
I fought back the tears threatening to spill and tried to steady my trembling voice. "The drugs have been ruined. Come pick me up now! Don't delay any longer, or I can't promise he'll survive!"
Realizing the severity of the situation, the man instantly barked out orders. Within seconds, I heard the whirring sound of helicopter blades swirling to life and the military mobilizing.
After hanging up, I stood in the same spot and waited for reinforcements to arrive.
When the crowd saw that, they started to mock me.
"Wow, you sure know how to put on an act!"
"Whose life are you trying to save? Maybe you should be focusing on yourself first!"
"I'm dying to see how he'll deal with a despicable thief like you!"
I curled my fingers into tight fists while staring right at them. "Alright! I'm also interested to see how he'll punish me!"
