Chapter 1

At my father's funeral, my mother and I bowed to the people who came to pay their respects.

My fiancé, Rowan Nash, was nowhere to be found on that occasion.

He had originally promised to stand by my side and accompany me until after the funerals.

However, I couldn't see him all the time, even if my legs and feet were cramping.

Noticing that I was too weak to stand, my mother asked me to rest for a while, fearing that I would faint.

Walking to the lounge behind the mourning hall, I heard a strange noise.

A woman moaned intermittently, "Rowan, you are having sex with me behind your... your future father-in-law's mourning hall. Are you... Are you excited?"

The next second, Rowan's voice was heard. "Oh, yes! It's so amazing, and I feel very excited..."

Realizing what they were doing, I was so shocked that I was rooted to the spot.

I proposed to break up, and Rowan cried and begged me to get back together.

I shook off his hand: getting back together? never!get out!

——

My meeting with Rowan was a doomed fate, just like what would happen in romantic novels.

When I was in my last year of high school, on my back to apply for a university, I met a few thugs who blocked my way.

I hurried to take the exam, but they stopped me so that I couldn't get away.

Rowan, who happened to pass by, rolled up his sleeves and fought with those thugs. Meanwhile, he urged me to leave quickly.

I left the place so quickly that I didn't hear the smug smile behind me.

Having been admitted to the college, I met Rowan again. He, a super rich second-generation, was handsome and had a pair of charming eyes.

I fell in love with him at first sight, and it was my puppy love.

In my opinion, it was fate that we could meet each other again.

From then on, I started pursuing him like crazy.

He neither agreed nor refused me for three years. It was not until I was a senior in college that he agreed to date me.

I was so thrilled and never dared to disobey his request.

I would do whatever he wanted me to do, whether playing the violin in the middle of the night or dancing for him in the early morning. At that moment, I only hoped he wouldn't abandon me or contact his first love, Jane.

Unexpectedly, he actually slept with Jane at my father's funeral. How disgusting it was!

As I returned to the mourning hall, my mother's face had already turned pale.

She suffered from heart disease and had a heart bypass surgery half a year ago.

The money for the surgery was given by Rowan.

That was why my mother was very grateful to him and advised me to treat him well.

I gritted my teeth tightly as Jane's voice still haunted me.

I had no idea when they got together. Maybe they had never split up.

To my surprise, they dared to do such a thing under the gaze of my father's portrait.

To maintain our dignity, I didn't pull down the curtain and let all the guests see what the two were doing.

Suddenly, my mother asked me, "Why did you come back so soon?"

I refrained myself and replied, "It's okay. I'll hold on for a while and go back to rest after it's over."

My mother held her heart, saying, "Then I'll go sit for a while."

Having finished speaking, she was about to head to the back of the mourning hall.

I quickly grabbed her and persuaded, "Mom, please wait a while. Let's rest after everyone leaves, or it will embarrass Rowan."

Indeed, most of the people came to mourn my father today for the sake of the Nash family and Rowan.

Chapter 2

The Nash family, the influential one with a very high status in Yunnard, was so wealthy that everyone wanted to curry favor with them.

Thus, it was normal for Rowan to be difficult to pursue.

As I mentioned that it might offend Rowan, my mother hurriedly agreed, "That's right. We can't be disrespectful. Otherwise, others will laugh at us."

In this way, we both didn't leave until all the guests left.

My mother finally couldn't hold on any longer and went home first.

I was left alone in the mourning hall, waiting for Rowan who had disappeared for a long time.

In the past, I used to follow him wherever he went, and he was the only one I valued most.

I rejected many suitors due to him. Once, I even passed up an opportunity to perform because of his birthday.

It seemed like I was enchanted by him before. But the moment I saw him having an affair with Jane, I suddenly became clear-headed.

After a while, Jane and Rowan appeared together.

Before Rowan could say anything, Jane took the initiative to explain in a soft voice, "Jeanne, sorry we're late. I wanted to pay my respects to your father, but I didn't know the way, so he had to pick me up. Then you know it..."

The woman really made me sick.

She put on an innocent look seemingly, but she would give me a provocative look as Rowan didn't notice it. Meanwhile, she deliberately adjusted her collar to reveal the kiss marks.

The reason why she hated me was easy to understand.

The elders of the Nash family disliked Jane. They thought she was not good enough for Rowan.

After meeting me, Rowan's mother, Wanda Nash, felt displeased. Because I was a gentle and elegant girl with artistic aspirations, she treated me as the best candidate for her daughter-in-law.

I couldn't just endure the humiliation of being betrayed, so I spoke to her unpleasantly, "It doesn't matter if you come or not. Don't think highly of yourself next time."

After hearing what I said, Rowan scolded me in anger, "Jeanne, mind your manners! You show your true colors right after your father dies?"

It shocked me at this time. Just because I was impolite to Jane, Rowan criticized me with even harsher words.

If I wasn't so exhausted and it wasn't the right time to break up, I would have fought the two to the end.

So, I just rubbed my brows and said calmly, "It's over now, and I'm leaving first. You can do whatever you want."

Maybe Rowan felt a little guilty because of my words.

He caught up with me for the first time and proposed in a low voice, "Jeanne, I know you're very tired now. How about I arrange for someone to take you back?"

I just refused him.

He confirmed that saying such words could appease me.

After all, it was rare for him to soften it like that.

In his view, I should kneel in front of him at this moment and thank him for his concern.

But the next moment, I recalled the absurd and disgusting scene behind the mourning hall again.

I felt sick whenever I saw Rowan.

After walking a few steps, Rowan asked, "Where's your mother? I just saw her there. Is she all right?"

When he mentioned my mother, I remembered that it was he who had found the best doctor to perform the surgery on her. So, I had to answer, "She was not feeling well and left first."

All of a sudden, the sound of high heels was heard from behind.

Then, Jane cried and complained, "Rowan, come here and help me. My foot is sprained..."

Feeling nauseous again, I gritted my teeth and walked away quickly.

Chapter 3

My father died in a car accident.

Despite not knowing the details, I had a general idea of how it happened. At that moment, a large group was racing cars openly on the main road, and one of them lost control and rushed towards my father.

These people were held accountable later, and the driver who caused the accident offered a huge amount of compensation to beg for our forgiveness.

I was reluctant at first, but then Rowan persuaded me. He told me that it would require high medical bills for my mother to live, so he hoped that I would reconsider it.

Being in turmoil, I could only accept his advice and reached an agreement with the driver.

I wasn't doing it for the money.

I just didn't want to lose my mother after my father died.

Maybe it would cause me to be an orphan.

After my father's funeral, I planned to find an opportunity to talk to Rowan about our breakup.

Unexpectedly, my mother's physical condition deteriorated. Long after the heart bypass surgery, there was an immune rejection. As we were at home, she couldn't breathe suddenly.

In desperation, I called Rowan, hoping that he could contact the attending doctor who operated on my mother last year.

Yet, Rowan didn't answer it all the time, so I had to make an emergency call and then wait for the ambulance to arrive.

I did not receive any response from Rowan from the time I contacted Rowan until my mother was pushed into the operating room.

It wasn't until midnight, when my mother's operation was completed, that I felt relieved.

My mother was a little nervous, so the doctor asked me to find a way to divert her attention and make her relax.

Thus, when my mother woke up in the early morning, I connected my mobile phone to a small Bluetooth speaker to play some soft piano music for her.

Just at this moment, Rowan called back.

Without turning off the Bluetooth speaker, I answered the call directly.

The next moment, his voice was heard. "What happened? Why did you call me so many times."

I gritted my teeth and tried hard not to cry. "It's okay now."

He didn't ask more but said, "Okay then."

A few minutes after I hung up the phone, I received another call from an unfamiliar number.

Thinking that it might be a doctor or nurse from the hospital, I answered it quickly.

As the call was connected, a strange male voice came on the line.

The man asked, "When will you break with Jeanne? I've been interested in her for a long time. I just want to see this cool and artistic lady begging for mercy in bed."

I was stunned while hearing these off-color remarks.

To prevent my mother from being affected, I prepared to hang up the phone.

Suddenly, the mobile phone which I had used for several years malfunctioned, but the sound could be clearly heard on the Bluetooth speaker.

Rowan then said carelessly, "Kevin, you know it. Women are the same in the bed. Jeanne just has a better figure than ordinary women."

The man called Kevin added, "Speaking of it, I still remember that incident! As Jeanne applies for a university, you take a fancy to her nice body. As a result, you ask us to pretend to be thugs and block her way so that you can take the opportunity to sexually harass her. Mr. Nash, I really admire you. What a playboy!"

I stood in the ward, petrified.

Another man then joined the conversation. "I don't think so. Mr. Nash is so loyal to Jane that he finds a woman, whose name looks like her. Jane, Jeanne, that's interesting. What do you think? Is it right?"

I was thunderstruck, and it made my whole body numb, unable to move. Yet, I still tried to turn to look at my mother.

Having undergone surgery two or three hours ago, my mother couldn't receive any stimulation. I regretted that my malfunctioning phone was connected to the Bluetooth speaker.

I shouldn't keep this broken phone just to save money.

At this time, with my mother's eyes wide open, she was in shock and anger.

Yet, her body was full of tubes, so she couldn't make any sound. Finally, she could only hold the bed sheets tightly with her hands.

Her emotional fluctuations caused the electrocardiogram monitor next to her to start sounding the alarm.

Kevin spoke up again, "Mr. Nash, since Mr. Donald Wood will be put in jail for five years because of you, how do you deal with it?"

Others also echoed, "Yeah, after knowing Mr. Nash disliked Jeanne's father, Mr. Wood just killed him and put an end to it. Mr. Wood is quite something! Mr. Nash, you can't treat him..."

I finally managed to turn off my phone.

I was shaking all over uncontrollably. It seemed like I fell into the sea, or like I was electrocuted. At this time, I was completely unable to react.

The shrill sound of the electrocardiogram monitor echoed throughout the ward, but the nurse on the night shift had not yet arrived.

After coming to my senses, I rushed to the door of the ward and shouted desperately, "Nurse! Can anyone help us? Help!"
