Chapter 1
I'm performing heart surgery when my "crimes" are announced through the hospital's speakers. The woman cries, "Dr. Maeve Thornton wrecked my family, seduced my husband, and chose to be with him despite knowing he was married!
"She contacted my husband in private and operated on my five-year-old daughter when she was perfectly fine. She attempted murder during the surgery!"
The woman is my husband's mistress, but she turns the tables on me and kicks the operation theater's door down with a group of people who think they're righteous. She curses at me and kicks the medical equipment over, wanting me to get on my knees and apologize.
She and her entourage take my scalpel away, strip me of my scrubs, and even stab me with my scalpel. There's blood everywhere.
I start laughing when my husband finally arrives. "So, this is the biggest surprise you've prepared for me, huh?"
While I was performing heart surgery on a five-year-old child, the hospital's loudspeaker suddenly blared and emitted an ear-piercing beeping sound.
After that, I heard a woman crying over the speakers. She said accusingly, "I want to report Dr. Maeve Thornton, the current attending physician for my daughter! She brought my daughter into the operating room without permission! She wants to murder my child!
"Unethical doctors run rampant these days. Why are you breaking up my family and trying to kill my daughter, Dr. Thornton?"
The voice on the speaker grew louder, and I could vaguely hear the outraged cries of disapproval from bystanders. My hand nearly slipped as sweat trickled down my cheek.
Several of my colleagues looked at me in shock. Their gazes were filled with mixed emotions—I saw mockery, confusion, and sympathy in their eyes.
I simply said, "The surgery is almost over. Stay focused."
But in the next second, a deafening sound of someone kicking and pounding on the door came from outside the operating room. Amid the noisy clatter, I heard the door lock being pried open.
A woman spoke up in a booming voice. "That shameless woman is in there. We mustn't let her hurt Ellie! Oh, God. Why hasn't someone as morally corrupt as the mistress been run over or suffered some kind of divine retribution yet? We're here today to seek justice for a wronged woman!"
I took a deep breath as I listened to the unbearable insults. My scalp tingled, but I kept my eyes on the scalpel, not daring to slip up in the slightest. Finally, the stitches were done!
The moment I completed the surgery, a crowd stormed in.
I tried to remain calm as I looked at the woman who looked like the leader and said, "Ma'am, we're in the middle of surgery. Please leave. We can handle this privately if there's an issue."
A colleague beside me also tried to dissuade them. "We're operating right now. Please don't disrupt our work and interfere with the optimal treatment for the child!"
But as soon as those words were spoken, the woman in charge, Faye Mitchell, became furious. She forcefully pushed me aside and reached out desperately to hold the little girl.
"This is my daughter! Why would she need surgery when she's perfectly fine? You're just trying to kill her and help the homewrecker steal my husband!" Faye cried pitifully as she shook the child's body, completely disregarding the fresh incision on her frail little body.
"Wake up, Ellie! Everyone is against us here. If anything happens to you, I'll die here in the hospital too!" Faye exclaimed.
I stepped forward to stop her. "That's enough!"
The moment I spoke, the crowd surrounded me. They drowned me in a flurry of accusations, their spit flying all over the place. Their gazes were murderous.
All of them looked furious and ready to kill. It was as though they might tear me apart at any second.
"How dare you have the audacity to be a doctor, you wretched woman? Maybe you're secretly infected with some disease. Shall we pay to get you examined?"
"My husband is 50 and still going strong. Do you want me to let you have him, you homewrecker?"
"I bet you're involved with all the men in your department."
They laughed loudly, their insults taking a turn for the worse.
I sensed that the situation was escalating, so I signaled to my colleague to move the young patient out first.
But Faye was sharp-eyed and quick to react. She shoved my colleague away immediately. A few of her righteous friends stood guard behind her and glared at the rest of the medical staff.
"What are you trying to do? You're planning to take my daughter's heart, right? You murderers deserve death!" Faye shouted.
I frowned as I wondered why the other hospital staff and security hadn't come in to assist us.
In the next moment, I heard Faye sneer like she'd read my mind. "We locked the doors with the locks we brought. They can't get in. No one's coming to save you anytime soon!"
My expression darkened as I glared at her. I retorted, "What exactly do you want? You're slandering me! I could call the police and press charges."
"Slander? What nonsense. You stole my husband, and you think I don't know? Ellie is my daughter. How did you get her in here, huh? It was you who tricked the child's father into signing for the surgery!" Faye hurled accusations at me one after another.
Her words made my heart skip a beat.
My husband had said he'd adopted this orphaned little girl from his hometown. He had lied to me!
Before I could respond, Faye began proclaiming my crimes to everyone. "I've been with Harvey for five years. Only today did I find out that this vixen had seduced him! While my husband was supposedly away on a business trip, he was actually out late at night to buy her contraceptives!"
Chapter 2
Faye's eyes became bloodshot with rage. She looked as if she wanted to hit me on the spot.
She released Ellie and stood up. Next, she pulled out her phone and showed everyone the chats between me and my husband. Some of the private exchanges in there made me blush.
In front of everyone, Faye began reading them out loud.
That night, Shane had decided to get intimate with me late at night even though we were out of condoms at home. Reluctantly, I told him to buy some contraceptives and specified the brand. He agreed and added some sweet nothings a husband would say to his wife.
But how did Faye know about this?
The name she kept using—Harvey—was my husband's younger brother's name. There must have been some misunderstanding, as my husband's name was Shane.
With this thought, I steadied myself and said, "You must be mistaken. My husband's name is Shane Peterson, and we've been married for a long time. You're talking about his younger brother—"
Before I could finish, Faye cut me off sharply, "Do you think you can lie your way out just by changing the name? I've got you, clear as day! Everyone, see for yourselves!"
Faye stormed toward me and yanked my collar down, exposing the kiss marks on my neck. Some people averted their eyes awkwardly, and I instinctively stepped back.
Completely enraged, Faye took out her phone and showed everyone a series of photos.
The man in the photos was my husband!
Shane was sleeping. He was bare-chested, and the kiss marks I'd left on him were all over his body. The suggestive angle of the photos felt like a blatant invasion. My heart sank at the sight of it.
Still clinging to a glimmer of hope, I tried to explain calmly, "Shane and I are legally married. We've been together for years. It's perfectly normal for us to be sleeping together. Is there some misunderstanding between you and Shane?"
A colleague of mine stepped in to defend me. "Shane has been married to Maeve for many years now. It's ridiculous of you to call her a mistress. Besides, the man in the photos is clearly Shane and not this 'Harvey' you keep bringing up."
Faye sneered, her words dripping with scorn. "My husband told me that Harvey is his real name. Shane is just an alias for dealing with shameless women like you who throw themselves at him!"
At that point, I couldn't hold back my anger any longer. "You keep calling him your husband. Are you even married to him? Are you sure Ellie is your daughter? If she is, then you're the mistress here, and your daughter is the illegitimate child!"
My words hit a nerve. Faye's fury was palpable as soon as my words fell.
She was hysterical as she clawed at my face with her sharp nails. I couldn't dodge in time. In the next second, I felt a stinging pain on my cheek. Faye had probably managed to scratch my face, which drew blood.
My colleagues were stunned.
The group of women who'd come with Faye clapped and cheered. They then hurled even more vicious insults at me. "She deserves to have her face scratched up! That lying, stubborn tramp!"
"Hey, didn't you hear that Maeve is Shane's lawful wife? I've worked with Maeve for years, and I'd know if she was lying," my colleague retorted, speaking up for me.
Hearing someone speak up for me only fueled Faye's fury more. Her expression further contorted with rage as she screamed, "You shameless bitch! If you hadn't pressured my husband to be with you and used your influence to force him to comply with your wishes, I'd be the one officially married to him!
"We were already married, and we consummated our marriage back in our hometown! We didn't get a marriage certificate back then because we were still too young. But I have a child with him. What do you have?"
"Yeah, they even have a child together! Aren't you ashamed of breaking up their family?"
"I get it! You used your power to make Harvey abandon his wife and child, right? You're a shameless homewrecker who relies on your connections to force others into submission. Why don't you just disappear?"
"She stole someone's husband and broke up a family. How could she cause the innocent child so much suffering? Oh my goodness! Could she have planned to take Ellie's heart during surgery?"
"How terrifying! Ellie is so young! This woman has a heart of stone!"
All of a sudden, everyone was staring at me with icy glares.
I felt like I'd fallen into a bottomless pit. My heart sank to my stomach, and I was stunned into silence.
Shane had married Faye under his brother's name back in his hometown and had a five-year-old daughter with her. She had come all the way here to confront me and even accused me of being a monster who would cut out a child's heart.
My colleagues tried their best to defend me. But Faye and her group only sneered and said in unison, "How do we know you're not trying to kill Ellie? Doctors aren't saints. Didn't a corrupt doctor scam a cancer patient not long ago? You cut up a healthy child's heart. Who knows why you did that?"
Their words made me tremble with anger.
I retorted coldly, "Ellie has had a heart condition since childhood. Moreover, our hospital would never harm a patient! Everyone's here, and Shane signed the consent for surgery!"
"Who knows? You're good at manipulating men. Mistresses have a track record of mistreating the children of the man they've latched themselves onto. You may be harboring evil intentions while doing the surgery!"
Faye cried louder and threw herself over Ellie's small body. "My poor child! Tell me if anything hurts. I'd rather die than let the mistress get away with this."
Anyone unfamiliar with the situation would believe I'd taken Ellie's heart out of malice once they saw Faye's heart-wrenching display.
I steadied myself and spoke up again, trying to keep my emotions in check.
Chapter 3
"If I wanted to harm Ellie, why would I bother carrying out this surgery and making sure that I completed it? Why would I have her sent to a regular ward afterward? She's very weak right now and shouldn't be dragged into our personal grudges.
"Open the door first. Let's settle everything after making sure the child is safe, okay?" I said pleadingly, looking at Faye.
But she only seemed to think she had me trapped. She scoffed and insisted, "Ellie and I aren't going anywhere. She's staying right here. She'll help me expose you. Then, we'll reunite with her father."
Faye's voice was loud. As the anesthesia began to wear off, Ellie started to gain slight consciousness.
Upon seeing this, Faye urgently shook Ellie's tiny hand like she'd seen a glimmer of hope. She hurriedly asked, "Ellie, is this the vile woman who stole your dad from me? Was she the one who kept us apart and mistreated you?"
Ellie looked up at me, her expression frail. I'd taken care of this child for a month after Shane brought her from his hometown without ever telling me he'd "adopted" a daughter. Despite my shock, I accepted her because he said she was a poor child with a heart condition.
I had been looking after her for a month, preparing her for surgery, with plans to return her to her foster parents after recovery. I might not have gone out of my way to shower her with love, but I provided her with comprehensive care.
They all waited for Ellie to speak. During the pause, I discreetly reached for my phone on the table and dialed Shane's number. However, he didn't pick up.
With tears in her eyes, Ellie looked at Faye.
"Just tell the truth, Ellie," Faye encouraged her with hopeful eyes. I watched Ellie intently too.
Finally, she said, "Ms. Thornton was mean to me. She said Daddy was her husband and told me to go away. She didn't give me food and wanted me to starve to death."
Her words hurt me immensely, and I felt a pang in my heart. I almost cried out loud when tears blurred my vision. No matter the truth, most people took a child's words as fact because they assumed children were too young to spout lies.
One of the women snarled, "You're a beast. How can you mistreat a child?"
"Are you even human? You stole someone's husband and mistreated their child. If I don't stand up for my friend today, god knows how many more unfortunate women will suffer in the future!"
"All we ask for is justice! The hospital must fire this shameless woman, and she must take responsibility for this mother and daughter! She should kneel and beg for forgiveness!"
"That's right. Anything less would be an injustice!"
After Ellie spoke, even my colleagues' gazes changed. I could see the conflicted look in their eyes.
"No matter what, children shouldn't suffer. You went too far."
"Exactly. My poor little Ellie is so young! Why did you mistreat her? You have a heart of stone, Maeve!" Faye cried.
As her words fell, her friends began smashing the equipment in the operating room. The sound of the device shattering echoed in the room. Someone grabbed my hair and tore at my surgical gown.
"How can someone like you be a doctor? You're a shame to all women!"
"Come on! Let's strip her of her clothes!"
The pain from my hair being yanked brought unbidden tears. The group of women wouldn't let me go that easily. They held me down on all fours in a humiliating position.
Taking advantage of the situation, Faye stepped forward and stomped on my hand that held the scalpel, grinding her foot into it. The searing pain from my hand made me cry out.
She lifted her head high and proclaimed, "What I'm doing is public service. A shameless doctor like you must have embezzled plenty of patients' money. I should just break your hand right here today!"
The waves of pain incapacitated me. I could only bite my lip until it bled. The more disheveled and miserable I appeared, the happier Faye seemed.
But even that wasn't enough for her. She looked around, and her gaze paused upon spotting something. Suddenly, she grabbed the scalpel. With everyone watching, she stepped on my hand and slashed at my finger joint. My blood dripped onto the floor horrifically.
As I let out a panicked and helpless scream, Faye's smile grew even more vicious.
The numbing pain in my hand became overwhelming. The blood pooling contrasted starkly against the pristine floor. It was a ghastly sight.
Someone shouted, "A doctor's hands are everything to them! No matter how mad you are, you shouldn't go for her hands! Dr. Thornton is a specialist in cardiac bypass!"
A young nurse took a deep breath and attempted to rush over to my aid. However, a group of burly women blocked her path.
She looked at them in disbelief. "Are you trying to destroy her career as a doctor? She's one of the best in the country…"
Her voice trailed off, choked with emotion.
Next, she pointed at Ellie and exclaimed, "This child has heart signal delay. Dr. Thornton saved her life! How can you ruin the person who saved her? No one else can perform Ellie's surgery except Dr. Thornton, but now her hands…"
Faye's friend sneered and said mockingly, "Isn't it a doctor's duty to save lives? They get paid by the government to serve the people. Do you expect me to thank them for doing their jobs?"
"Also, who knows if this murderer is really saving Ellie's life or doing her harm? We don't understand whatever it is you're saying."
"Faye is only teaching this mistress a lesson."
Faye laughed derisively, her face full of malice.
Fighting back the pain, I glared at her and said through gritted teeth, "I'll make you pay for this."
"I'm the voice of justice. A wicked homewrecker like you doesn't have the right to talk. It seems you crave more pain, don't you?" Faye said maliciously, raising the scalpel to strike again
Suddenly, there came a loud noise from outside the door. I heard something shatter, and then the door burst open.
Shane rushed in. When he saw my battered, humiliated state, he was shocked and looked pained.
Faye's expression was one of surprise and joy. "Dear, have you come here to support me because you know Ellie and I are being bullied?"
She walked over briskly, intending to link her arm with his.
However, Shane brushed her off and pushed her hand away forcefully.
He looked only at me, his voice breaking. "Who did this to you?"
I lifted my head and closed my eyes tiredly. "Do you really need to ask, Shane? You're quite something. Care to explain what your relationship with this woman is?"
