Chapter 3

Holding the pregnancy test report, I was completely stunned.

It had the official stamp of the city hospital, and the doctor who signed it was my junior, Daphne Bailey. I knew her character well. She wasn't the type to falsify a report.

I looked at Amelia's belly. It wasn't obvious yet, but there was a noticeable baby bump.

Besides, she had recently gained weight. She had always been obsessed with her figure, so unless she was pregnant, she would never have allowed herself to put on weight.

Though deeply confused, I couldn't stop myself from reaching out to touch her belly. "How far along are you?"

Before Mom passed, her dying wish was for us to have a baby soon, and I promised her that we would.

Dad died in an accident when I was a kid. Mom raised me alone, worked herself into chronic illnesses, and died before she could ever enjoy life.

Having lost both parents at such a young age, I had always longed to start a family of my own.

Amelia had made the same promise before the wedding, but once we were married, she turned into a total workaholic.

Once, she got pregnant by accident and had an abortion behind my back. When I found out and asked why she hadn't talked to me about it, she just said she was too young and didn't want a baby to drag her down.

She told me to give her three years and promised she would give me a baby then, so from that day on, I never pushed her and stopped bringing it up altogether.

Now, on our third-year mark, it seemed like she was finally keeping her word.

I was ready to tell her about one of the villas I had bought before the marriage. I would give it to her as a pregnancy gift and two more after the baby was born, one for her parents and the other for her and the baby.

As for her affair, I could forgive her for the sake of the baby.

But something about the way she was reacting to the pregnancy felt off. There was something even stranger about her attitude toward me.

She avoided my touch and wrapped her arms tight around her belly. "I'm three months along now. I was just too careless to notice."

"Three months?"

My voice cracked. The thought of giving her a villa instantly vanished.

Three months ago… That was when Zayden first joined the company. They soon became inseparable and frequently went on business trips together.

Amelia barely came home, and on the rare nights she did, she always had an excuse to avoid intimacy.

At first, I thought she was just exhausted. I even felt sorry for her and swallowed my needs, taking cold showers just to cool off.

It wasn't until much later that I realized she was in love with another man. She was so obsessed with her new man that it seemed, in her eyes, I didn't even exist anymore.

For three months, I endured it and waited to see if she would come back to her senses.

I dropped hint after hint, reminding her to turn back before it was too late. But she never listened, and if anything, she started to despise me more.

She even started belittling me just to win Zayden's favor.

Three years of marriage meant nothing compared to a fling with an assistant of three months. It was ironic how fragile our relationship was.

"What's wrong? Are you saying that the baby's not yours? I've never slept with another man aside from you!"

Panic was written all over Amelia's face as she scrambled to prove that the baby was mine. The fact that she felt the need to defend herself only confirmed that she was hiding something.

We were husband and wife. There was no doubt that she should be pregnant with my baby, but the fact that she was so defensive spoke volumes.

Honestly, it was no surprise that she was nervous. She'd barely slept at home in the past three months. She would either be traveling for work or sleeping at the office.

We had only slept together once, and that was two months ago, the night I got drunk on Mom's death anniversary.

For once, Amelia came home and stayed with me.

When I woke up the next morning, we were lying in the same bed with our clothes in disarray. She acted spoiled, complaining that I had been too rough and hurt her.

But I couldn't recall anything from that night, so all I could do was let her complain.

I ended up buying her a luxury watch to make it up to her.

As the thought crossed my mind, I quickly said, "Of course, I trust you. I believe the baby's mine, so don't worry. I'll take good care of you both."

After coaxing her into the bedroom to sleep, I entered the bathroom alone, closed the door, and called Daphne.

"I need a favor, Daphne. Could you check if anything's off about Amelia's pregnancy?"
