Chapter 2

"What are you laughing at?" Amelia snapped with a look of contempt.

I reminded her. "Don't forget the company's mine, and you're just managing it for me."

Her expression contorted with rage as she clenched her fists. "Have you no shame, Mason? I've worked myself to the bone growing this company over the past three years! It would've long gone bankrupt if we'd left it in your hands."

I didn't bother arguing. Instead, I just dropped a simple "See you in court!" and started clearing my desk.

Just then, the office phone rang. Zayden eagerly jumped to answer it, but after just a couple of sentences, he frowned and shot me an annoyed look.

"Mr. Lange is asking for you."

Russell Lange was our biggest client and my junior in school. Half of our orders came from his company, mostly as a favor for my sake.

I picked up the phone and went straight to the point. "I won't handle this company's affairs anymore. I'm going to resign."

He froze for a moment, then caught on. "Understood. In that case, our partnership with the company ends here too."

The call was on speaker mode, so Amelia heard every word. She immediately snatched the phone and scrambled to explain.

"Please don't do that, Mr. Lange! Mason was just being difficult and unprofessional. I'll fire him if I have to!"

That immediately set Russell off. "What? You're firing Mr. Brooks?"

Amelia was genuinely confused. "Mr. Brooks? Mason is my husband, but he's just a junior assistant, so there's no need to treat a useless loser like him with that much respect."

Russell was so mad that he laughed. He decided to drop all courtesy and lashed out at her. "Who do you think you are, Amelia? Why would I even want to work with you if Mr. Brooks isn't around?"

Amelia's face flushed red in rage, but she dared not offend a major client like Russell. All she could do was stammer out apologies and beg for another chance.

Russell showed her zero respect and simply hung up on her.

She panicked and tried to call him back again and again, only to realize that he had blocked her number.

Her expression darkened as she furiously turned on me. "You useless loser! You just offended our biggest client! If you don't get Mr. Lange back on board, you're fired!"

I had suffered under her arrogant, overbearing tone and put up with it for three years, all because I owed her a deep favor.

Before we got married, my mom fell seriously ill, and Amelia meticulously took care of her for a while.

Before Mom passed, Amelia agreed to marry me and fulfilled Mom's greatest wish.

Out of gratitude, I handed my company over to her and tolerated her foul temper and all her out-of-line behavior. But my indulgence had made her forget who she was.

Now, it was time to put my life back on track.

I picked up my box of belongings and gave her a mocking smile. "I've wanted to quit for a long time. Fire me all you want, and even if you don't, I'm leaving anyway."

With that, I walked out carrying the box. Her angry voice followed me out of the room.

"You've got a lot of nerve, Mason! Who says you can just walk away? You're skipping work, and I can dock all your pay!"

I didn't respond and just kept walking. I was even walking away from my company, so why would I care about that measly pay?

After returning to our marital home, I started packing.

Before getting married, I had purchased several villas Amelia never knew about. I had planned to give her a surprise after we had a baby, but for the past three years, she had always used "work" as an excuse to refuse having kids.

Well, at least I saved myself an expensive gift.

I had just finished packing when Amelia returned. Her earlier arrogance was gone as she tossed a pregnancy test report at me.

"I'm pregnant. What do we do now?"

Chapter 3

Holding the pregnancy test report, I was completely stunned.

It had the official stamp of the city hospital, and the doctor who signed it was my junior, Daphne Bailey. I knew her character well. She wasn't the type to falsify a report.

I looked at Amelia's belly. It wasn't obvious yet, but there was a noticeable baby bump.

Besides, she had recently gained weight. She had always been obsessed with her figure, so unless she was pregnant, she would never have allowed herself to put on weight.

Though deeply confused, I couldn't stop myself from reaching out to touch her belly. "How far along are you?"

Before Mom passed, her dying wish was for us to have a baby soon, and I promised her that we would.

Dad died in an accident when I was a kid. Mom raised me alone, worked herself into chronic illnesses, and died before she could ever enjoy life.

Having lost both parents at such a young age, I had always longed to start a family of my own.

Amelia had made the same promise before the wedding, but once we were married, she turned into a total workaholic.

Once, she got pregnant by accident and had an abortion behind my back. When I found out and asked why she hadn't talked to me about it, she just said she was too young and didn't want a baby to drag her down.

She told me to give her three years and promised she would give me a baby then, so from that day on, I never pushed her and stopped bringing it up altogether.

Now, on our third-year mark, it seemed like she was finally keeping her word.

I was ready to tell her about one of the villas I had bought before the marriage. I would give it to her as a pregnancy gift and two more after the baby was born, one for her parents and the other for her and the baby.

As for her affair, I could forgive her for the sake of the baby.

But something about the way she was reacting to the pregnancy felt off. There was something even stranger about her attitude toward me.

She avoided my touch and wrapped her arms tight around her belly. "I'm three months along now. I was just too careless to notice."

"Three months?"

My voice cracked. The thought of giving her a villa instantly vanished.

Three months ago… That was when Zayden first joined the company. They soon became inseparable and frequently went on business trips together.

Amelia barely came home, and on the rare nights she did, she always had an excuse to avoid intimacy.

At first, I thought she was just exhausted. I even felt sorry for her and swallowed my needs, taking cold showers just to cool off.

It wasn't until much later that I realized she was in love with another man. She was so obsessed with her new man that it seemed, in her eyes, I didn't even exist anymore.

For three months, I endured it and waited to see if she would come back to her senses.

I dropped hint after hint, reminding her to turn back before it was too late. But she never listened, and if anything, she started to despise me more.

She even started belittling me just to win Zayden's favor.

Three years of marriage meant nothing compared to a fling with an assistant of three months. It was ironic how fragile our relationship was.

"What's wrong? Are you saying that the baby's not yours? I've never slept with another man aside from you!"

Panic was written all over Amelia's face as she scrambled to prove that the baby was mine. The fact that she felt the need to defend herself only confirmed that she was hiding something.

We were husband and wife. There was no doubt that she should be pregnant with my baby, but the fact that she was so defensive spoke volumes.

Honestly, it was no surprise that she was nervous. She'd barely slept at home in the past three months. She would either be traveling for work or sleeping at the office.

We had only slept together once, and that was two months ago, the night I got drunk on Mom's death anniversary.

For once, Amelia came home and stayed with me.

When I woke up the next morning, we were lying in the same bed with our clothes in disarray. She acted spoiled, complaining that I had been too rough and hurt her.

But I couldn't recall anything from that night, so all I could do was let her complain.

I ended up buying her a luxury watch to make it up to her.

As the thought crossed my mind, I quickly said, "Of course, I trust you. I believe the baby's mine, so don't worry. I'll take good care of you both."

After coaxing her into the bedroom to sleep, I entered the bathroom alone, closed the door, and called Daphne.

"I need a favor, Daphne. Could you check if anything's off about Amelia's pregnancy?"
