Chapter 1

On the one-year anniversary of the company's public listing, my wife, Susan Lynn, publicly announced that she was gifting a supercar worth millions of dollars to her childhood friend, Charles Baker.

Charles, with his arm around her shoulder, raised his glass and said, "Thank you, Susan. Here's a toast to our friendship!"

I let out a derisive laugh and walked away. Susan, feeling upset, chased after me, shouting, "Angus, what's your problem? What's wrong with me giving the top salesperson a supercar? You're just a useless waste of space, and you still dare to throw a tantrum!"

I forced a bitter smile and turned around, leaving without hesitation. Behind me, Charles tried to comfort her, "Don't be angry, Susan, Angus didn't mean to lash out like that. You gave me such a valuable gift, and it must not sit well with him!"

"Hmph! If he doesn't like it, he should try harder! All he does is slack off day in and day out. If he can't stand others doing well, he should actually accomplish something!"

As usual, Susan Lynn lifted one person up while putting another down. I had long since gotten used to it.

Ever since Charles came back, Susan had become a different person. Whenever I showed even a hint of dissatisfaction, she'd mock me.

However, she never considered the fact that I was the one who brought in most of the company's major clients.

Even the deal that Charles just signed was a result of me hounding the client for a month before they finally agreed.

Since Susan valued him so highly, I figured I'd let him handle it.

Afterward, Charles sent me a video.

"Angus, Susan had too much to drink and insisted on dancing with me. I couldn't stop her, so please don't hold it against me!"

In the video, Susan wrapped her arms around his neck, her gaze dreamy as she looked up at him.

Her whole body was pressing tightly against Charles while the people around them were chanting, "Kiss! Kiss!"

The next second, Susan leaned in to kiss him, and the video cut off, but that was enough for me.

"Got it," I replied passively.

Maybe it was the lack of resistance from me, but Charles became even more brazen after that.

"Angus Baker, you're the most gutless man I've ever seen. Susan had too much to drink tonight, so she's staying over at my place. Don't worry, I'll take good care of her!"

I did not reply, figuring someone like him probably had no concept of honor or decency. I went home, packed up a bit, and went straight to sleep.

The next morning, I went to the office, organized all my client files, and then handed in my resignation.

Susan did not arrive until ten o'clock. When she saw my resignation, her face remained indifferent as she called me into her office.

"What's this about? Just giving up completely, are we?"

I shrugged. "I'm tired. Once you approve, we'll discuss our divorce."

Susan was visibly stunned. "Divorce?! Angus, have you lost your mind? All this over that sports car? I never realized how petty you could be! Do you have any idea how much this deal Charles brought in will profit us?"

I took a deep breath. "That's why I'm resigning. Since he's so capable, there's no point in you supporting a freeloader like me!"

"You!"

I seized the moment and interjected, "Think over the divorce. I only want what I'm owed—thirty percent of the company's shares and dividends."

"In your dreams!" Susan slapped the table. "You're a worthless bum who does nothing but waste time, and you still want a share of the profits? Keep dreaming! Fine, you can have your divorce, but don't even think about touching the company!"

With that, she quickly signed my resignation, threw it in my face, and said, "Get out!"

I clenched my fists. "Susan, don't regret this."

"Regret? You should worry about your future. You're too old to start from scratch!"

I gave her one last look, took the report, and walked out. I went straight to the HR department to finalize my departure. When my coworkers saw me packing up to leave, they were stunned.

"Angus, where are you going?"

"Are you leaving for a new job, Angus? What about us?"

I could not help but give a bitter smile. "I can't stay here anymore. You all should do your best but let me give you a warning: don't bite off more than you can chew here. I'm a cautionary tale! Five years of hustle, and not a single cent to show for it!"

I made sure to hint that Susan was stingy and broke her promises. The whole office quickly learned that I was leaving under duress.

Susan even withheld all my dividends. In everyone's eyes, she was just a greedy, love-struck woman.

But soon enough, I would make her regret it!

Chapter 2

Half an hour later, I completed all the formalities with the HR manager, and as soon as I stepped out, I ran into Charles.

With a mocking tone, he sneered, "Where are you off to, Angus? I heard you quit. Got a better opportunity lined up?"

His words immediately painted me as someone climbing the corporate ladder, assuming I was off to greener pastures.

Now, my colleagues were giving me strange looks.

I smiled calmly and did not bother to refute him. "That's right, I can see this company is going downhill, so I'm getting out while the getting's good. Take it easy once you take over. Don't run the place into the ground!"

His face darkened instantly.

"What's that supposed to mean, Angus?"

"Just what it sounds like. Didn't you understand?" I shot him with a disdainful look and turned to leave.

From behind, Charles chuckled derisively. "Susan said you'd come crawling back if you knew what's good for you. If you apologize, she'll forgive you. Then you can be my assistant and work under me."

I turned back and looked at him. "Didn't Susan tell you? I'm done with her. Tell her not to show her face around me anymore!"

Charles's brows furrowed tightly, but I walked away without a second thought.

Did he really think signing a contract was the end of it?

The partnership would only be considered a success after fundings were secured. Should the funding stall for three months, the company would go under.

My relationship with Mr. Reed spanned years. Could Charles even compare?

Back at home, I started packing up and dividing the assets. Did Susan really think that I would have no leverage after withholding my company dividends?

As long as we were still married, the company's assets included my share. But first, I needed to separate things.

I consulted a lawyer, laying out my current situation. I demanded half, given that I had no concrete evidence of their affair.

However, I instructed the lawyer to aim for seventy percent if possible, and the lawyer assured me it could be done.

I also hired someone to keep tabs on Susan and Charles. Those two schemers were bound to be together eventually.

I was in no hurry. Once I packed up, I moved all my belongings to a small apartment I bought before my marriage.

I lay down on the bed, feeling prepared for what was to come. The apartment was equipped with surveillance. Everything was in place and just waiting for the right moment.

But that evening, to my surprise, she returned home right on time.

She saw me lying in bed and flew into a rage, embarrassed and furious. "Get up! How dare you lie here doing nothing!

"Do you have any idea? Tonight, Mr. Reed already reached out to us and said I..."

I did not want to hear it and cut her off. "What does that have to do with me?"

"What are you talking about?" she snapped.

"I mean exactly what I said. If you don't like it, just ignore me. Also, sign the divorce papers so we can go our separate ways."

Hearing my words, Susan froze. "Have you lost your mind, Angus?"

"I never realized how petty you were!" she continued, indignant. "Today, in front of everyone, you said I wouldn't pay you even though it's our joint marital property. How could you be so shameless?"

I looked up at her calmly. "So you do understand that it's joint marital property. I'm just asking for what's rightfully mine, not a penny more. So, save your breath. Since you and Charles are so close, I'll let you have each other. From now on, you two can be the perfect pair."

Maybe it was because I was being too blunt, her face turned red with anger. However, she quickly softened her tone. "Don't act impulsively. Even though I approved your resignation today, you're still part of the company. Settle things with Mr. Reed first, then we can talk after that."

I shrugged. "I can't do that. That's Charles's job now. Everyone knows he's the big hero behind signing that contract."

I then added, just to mock her, "If I stepped in, how would that make Charles look?"

Chapter 3

I had been running around tirelessly, chasing down clients and even helping Mr. Reed take care of his sick son. But when it came time to sign the contract, Charles just showed up for a single meeting, and suddenly all the credit went to him.

I did not argue. I just stared at Susan, who knew she was in the wrong. Her face turned bright red with anger.

I placed the divorce papers on the table. She softened her tone. "Angus, is it really necessary? Why don't we compromise? I'll give you three million. Just don't divorce me and help me talk to Mr. Reed. Get him to release the payment as soon as possible, okay?"

I shook my head. "No. Let's just get divorced."

She flew into a rage, "Angus, don't you dare regret this!"

I did not respond. If she was not willing, then so be it.

Regardless, I still had to prepare for the worst. If they ran the company into the ground, or even into debt, I would still be responsible for a share.

So, I had to finalize the divorce before they made any irreversible mistakes.

Unfortunately, Susan was not ready to cut ties so quickly. She stubbornly refused the divorce. I sighed. It looked like I had no choice but to take the second step: if negotiations failed, I'd have to file a lawsuit.

For that, I needed Charles's help, indirectly. I deliberately posted on social media. [Even though I left the company, some people still want me back. They just can't manage without me!]

My friends cheered me on in the comments.

[I knew it! No way they'd let you go so easily, Angus. They can't do without you!]

[You were the key player in closing that deal!]

[Susan's blind, giving all the credit to some pretty boy!]

I laughed, replying, [Don't even get me started, it's all just the struggles of a hard-working employee.]

I kept an eye on things, and just as I expected, Charles could not sit still. He called Susan right away.

After taking the call, she stormed out of the office but not before glaring at me and warning, "Angus, I'm not granting you a divorce. You better close that deal with Mr. Reed, or I'll make your life a living hell!"

She left, and I grinned. I sent Charles a message. [Susan can't let go of me no matter how impressive you think you are.]

Charles did not reply, but I knew he was feeling the pressure. He was desperate to prove himself, to demonstrate his own appeal.

Less than thirty minutes later, he sent me a video. In the dim lighting, they were holding hands.

Charles's raspy voice asked, "Do you like me?" The camera shook, showing Susan sitting on his lap. They were making out passionately, and soon things escalated to something explicit.

The sight made me sick to my stomach. Despite that, I saved the video.

Charles, brimming with arrogance, texted. [Did you see that, Angus? I stole your credit, and I took your woman too!]

I immediately replied with a thumbs-up emoji. [Congrats, you're amazing.]

Then I sent the video to my lawyer, instructing him to proceed with the lawsuit. A quick glance at the background showed the video was filmed at a nearby hotel.

Charles did not even bother closing the curtains, and I recognized the view of the bank across the street. The room was probably around the fourth floor.

I grabbed my phone and headed out.

It was time for a show. On the way down, I called Susan's parents. "Dad, Susan said she was meeting with a client, but she hasn't come back. She sent me a text saying she's at a hotel, and I'm worried something happened."

Her father, immediately alarmed, replied, "I'm coming over right now. Send me the location!"

I shared the location and met them at the hotel.

At the reception, the staff tried to stop us, but my mother-in-law shouted, "My daughter's trapped inside with some criminal! If anything happens, you'll be held responsible!"

I seized the moment to give them Susan's name and urged the hotel to call the police. Then we rushed upstairs.

"It should be this room!" Her father pointed, looking at me. "Kick the door down!"

I suppressed my excitement and, hearing the sounds coming from inside, kicked the door open! In the next instant, her parents barged in.
