Chapter 1
Yesterday, Sadie, my mother-in-law, violently beat me, who just had an abortion operation. She died today.
She died in the home of a mistress.
When the police called us to identify the body, I was struggling in the kitchen, trying to make a bowl of soup for myself.
Sadie was not at home today, so I secretly bought a pound of ribs online.
As soon as the ribs were cooked, my husband, Jarvis Cain, returned home with a pale face, his forehead covered with sweat.
His hand holding the key was still trembling.
"What's going on?"
I put down the lid in my hand and asked in a hurry.
Jarvis collapsed to the ground along the shoe cabinet, his eyes filled with fear.
"Mom is dead."
My hands paused as I was about to untie the apron.
"Are you kidding? This joke is not funny at all."
As soon as I finished, Jarvis' expression changed. He suddenly got up and rushed to me, grabbing my shoulder like a madman.
"Would I fucking joke with you about my mother? My mom is dead. She's really dead. The police just called me to identify her body."
Jarvis collapsed to the ground and muttered to himself as if he lost his soul.
"My mom called me today. It's only been a few hours. Why is she dead?"
"The police said that the suspect has been caught."
Suddenly, Jarvis grabbed my trouser leg. I was so scared that I almost cried out.
"They said that the suspect is my dad. Don't you think it's funny?"
I patiently pulled Jarvis up.
"Let's go to the police station first. What if it's a misunderstanding?"
Before leaving, I went to the kitchen to take a look at the pork ribs I had just cooked.
Fortunately, Sadie couldn't come back.
Otherwise, if she found out that I ate ribs secretly, she would beat me to death.
As soon as I arrived at the police station, I saw a shivering woman curled up in the corner.
I knew her.
She was the mistress of Martin Cain, my father-in-law.
I looked at her, who was always dressed glamorously, but now looked so wretched.
If it weren't for the jade bracelet on her wrist, I wouldn't have recognized her.
That bracelet was originally my only dowry. It was worth more than $40,000.
Later, Martin took it away when I was not at home on the grounds of doing business.
I made a scene for two days because of this and was almost driven out of the house.
Later, when I went to the office to drop off the files for Martin, I accidentally saw his secretary, Evie Hale, wearing my bracelet.
Only then did I realize that they had a close relationship.
As soon as Jarvis saw Evie, he rushed over and picked her up.
"Did you do this? What did you do to my mom? I should never have let you get hired into this company."
Evie was picked up by Jarvis, looking weak and helpless.
"No, I didn't. I didn't know anything. Jarvis, you have to believe me. It wasn't me. How could I possibly do anything to hurt you?"
Evie shook her head desperately, tears rolling down her cheeks. She looked so pitiful.
As Jarvis saw Evie like this, his heart softened, and he loosened his grip.
If I were Jarvis, I would also be tempted by such a pitiful beauty.
Martin and Jarvis really had the same taste.
"Sir, please calm down. This is the police station."
The police officer appeared in time to stop Jarvis.
Chapter 2
Jarvis was furious, had nowhere to vent his anger, and turned to look at me.
"What are you waiting for? Go and ask about the situation here."
I nodded and ran away in a flurry.
It almost came to me, who was innocent.
Jarvis and I were led to the morgue of the hospital.
Sadie was hale and hearty and arrogantly called me a loser in the morning, but she was now silently lying in the morgue.
Standing in front of the bed, Jarvis didn't dare to move.
I walked over, suppressed the fear in my heart, and slowly lifted the white cloth covering Sadie.
It was indeed Sadie.
However, at this moment, she had become a stiff corpse.
Sadie's face was livid, and there were a few scars. Her hair was in a mess.
Her eyes were wide open, and her eyeballs were protruding. Sadie died with a grievance.
One could imagine how badly Sadie had been beaten before she died.
Sadie was a tough woman.
Sadie was very conceited all her life, but she could afford to be such a person.
Sadie, a woman from the countryside, gained a firm foothold in this city and supported this family on her own.
Tears streamed down Jarvis' face. He opened his mouth for a long time, unable to say a word.
I extended my hand and slowly brushed past Sadie's eyes.
Finally, her eyes closed.
After identifying the body, we were taken back to the police station to give a statement.
As soon as I sat in the interrogation room, my legs couldn't help trembling.
"Don't be nervous. We're just asking you some routine questions. Just tell us what you know."
Seeing that I was a little nervous, the officer comforted me.
I nodded.
"Sadie is competitive and keeps her word. The family business was founded by her. After Martin got married, he has been idle at home. He often goes out to drink coffee and fish with his friends."
"Later, Sadie saw that Martin had way too much time on his hands, so she asked him to take up a position in the company. Every day, he went to the company and familiarized himself with the business. Later, Sadie had some health problems and went back home to recuperate, so the company was completely taken over by Martin."
"Martin is famously uxorious. He's an honest man."
"How much do you know about Martin and Evie?"
The officer asked.
I shook my head and thought for a moment before nodding.
"I only found it out recently. It was Sadie who discovered it first. She took me to the company and made a scene once. Only then did I find out that Evie had an affair with Martin."
"Sadie couldn't stand the blow and was hospitalized for a few days. No one expected that Evie would be with Martin. My husband also suffered a blow because of this."
"Jarvis and Evie knew each other before?"
The police officer seemed to have caught something important and hurriedly asked.
I nodded in embarrassment.
"She's Jarvis' first love."
Yes, Evie was Jarvis' first love.
They were college classmates. Evie was beautiful and majored in dancing.
Although Jarvis was average-looking, his family was rich.
Evie had got a lot of suitors, and Jarvis wasn't poor.
Jarvis chased Evie vigorously, and then they fell in love with each other.
However, before they could take their relationship to the next level, Sadie broke them up.
Evie's family was poor and she had a younger brother. Sadie was used to being snobbish, so she naturally looked down on Evie's family.
Sadie gave Evie $200,000 and sent her abroad.
However, while Sadie was sick and Martin was in charge of the company, Evie came back.
Not only had Evie successfully joined the company, but she had also become the president's secretary.
Needless to say, it must have something to do with Jarvis.
Jarvis thought that Evie had come back to renew their bond. Of course, he was happy to do her a favor.
However, Jarvis didn't expect that Evie would give a shit about being his wife.
Evie wanted to be the president's wife.
No one knew when Evie hooked up with Martin.
When Sadie took me to the company that day, she happened to see them having an affair.
Evie was in a white dress, which stood out in contrast with her bold and uninhibited posture as she sat on Martin's lap.
What happened that day got public. When Jarvis arrived at the office in a hurry, he still took Evie, the phony bitch, under his wing.
For the first time, Martin and Jarvis were so united because of an irrelevant woman.
Sadie was so angry that she was sent to the hospital on the spot.
"What's your attitude when you find out Martin has an affair with Evie?"
The officer put down the pen in his hand and stared straight at me.
I quickly waved my hand.
"I don't have any opinions. My attitude is not important to everyone. I have no say in this family."
When I rolled up my sleeves, the officer glanced at my exposed arm and continued to ask.
"What's wrong with your injuries?"
I hurriedly put down my sleeves in an attempt to hide the marks on my body.
"No... nothing."
Another policewoman walked over and lifted my sleeves, and the shocking scars were revealed.
Everyone present gasped.
"What the hell is going on?"
