Chapter 1
The day my mother, Maria Davis, was buried, my son, Zachary Sinclair, had a high fever, so I had to ask my husband, Ethan Sinclair, to take him to the hospital first.
As they were halfway there, Ethan said he had an emergency, so he left Zachary at the intersection and sent a message for me to take Zachary to the hospital.
I was worried that Zachary wasn't safe outside, so I had to leave Maria's funeral and drive there in exhaustion.
Unexpectedly, something happened to Zachary.
A man drove straight into Zachary and ran over him because he was drunk.
I screamed at the top of my lungs, holding Zachary's mangled body in despair and devastation.
On the following day, Ethan's childhood sweetheart, Kayla Watson, posted pictures on Instagram to show off how close she and Ethan were.
Kayla: [You're always the first to be there whenever I need you every time! Thanks for staying with me on my birthday, my childhood sweetheart. It's so nice to have you!]
The accompanying picture was of Ethan gently looking down to help Kayla cut the cake.
I was so upset that I took a screenshot and asked Ethan: [Is this why you left Zachary behind?]
It wasn't until I finished selecting a grave for Zachary that Ethan finally realized and replied: [Zachary just had a fever. He still had you, right? But Kayla can't leave me!]
——
[Ethan, we should get a divorce!]
I felt completely desperate and devastated and no longer had any expectations of Ethan. I sent the last message and blacklisted and deleted Ethan.
In the darkness and emptiness of my home, I clung to Zachary's picture helplessly and wept with regret.
Ethan was the man I loved for ten years.
Since he had started his business at college, I had been there for him through thick and thin and helped him take risks.
Everyone knew that I was deeply in love with Ethan and that I wanted to marry him and build a wonderful family with him.
Ethan's company grew step by step. In the fourth year of our relationship, he proposed to me.
I got pregnant in the same year. Ethan seriously worked on Zachary's fetus education and insisted on applying stretch mark cream on me day after day.
Even when I was in labor, he held my hand tightly to reassure me.
I thought he absolutely loved me, until Kayla came back from abroad.
He stopped caring about me and Zachary.
As Kayla got stuck in the snowy roads, all she had to do was make a phone call, and no matter how much Zachary and I needed Ethan, he would anxiously drop us off and leave.
Our wedding anniversary couldn't outweigh Kayla's complaint that she was afraid of the dark due to the power outage.
Every time I confronted Ethan about it, he would justifiably and impatiently say, "Julie, what's wrong with you again?
"You obviously know that Kayla is just like a sister to me, and she doesn't have a boyfriend to take care of her, so I'm supposed to look after her."
They truly didn't do anything out of line.
Even as upset as I was, I trusted Ethan would have a sense of propriety and wouldn't let me or Zachary down.
However, no matter what, I didn't expect him to be so ridiculous that he left Zachary with a high fever halfway to Kayla's birthday and drove off alone!
If Maria hadn't passed away a few days ago from a serious illness, and I had been busy handling Maria's funeral, I would never have asked Ethan to drive Zachary to the hospital.
But it was the only time.
Zachary had lost his life.
He was so well-behaved, sensible and brilliant. Every time Ethan stayed up all night, he would hug me and comfort me, "Mommy, don't cry. I'm here."
How desperate could he have been when he was hit by that car?
Holding Zachary's picture, I cried my last tear.
I was about to get up and pack up Zachary's belongings when the door was suddenly opened. Ethan walked in together with his arm around Kayla's waist.
Ethan panicked for a moment when he saw me.
"Julie, why are you home?
"Shouldn't you be at the hospital right now?"
With that, he protected Kayla behind him.
Kayla was wearing a newly purchased dress, the same one I had wanted two weeks ago at the mall.
Chapter 2
Two weeks ago, I had been staring intently at that dress, fondling it admiringly.
However, Ethan looked up from his cell phone, glanced lightly at the dress, and said, "That dress is picky about your figure, and it doesn't fit you very well."
Besides, that dress was expensive.
Upon hearing what Ethan had said, I gave up on buying it.
A few days ago, I saw the purchase invoice for this dress at home, and I expected it to be Ethan's attempt to surprise me.
Unexpectedly, Kayla was wearing it at this moment.
Ethan seemed completely surprised that I would be in the house. He hid his inner panic and forced himself to stay calm.
"Julie, Zachary had a high fever. What are you doing at home instead of taking care of him at the hospital?"
Ethan was afraid I would retort to him, so he blamed me first justifiably.
I felt like everything was getting so boring.
Everything about marriage, trust, and so forth went up in smoke.
I felt extremely exhausted, so I held Zachary's picture in my arms without saying a word and turned to leave.
"Julie, what did you mean?"
Perhaps Ethan noticed that something didn't look right with me, so he stopped me, his tone softening as a hint of guilt showed in his eyes.
"I was wrong for leaving Zachary behind temporarily that day, but he's so well-behaved and sensible, so he can definitely understand me.
"When it's Zachary's birthday in two days, I'll buy him his favorite toy truck to comfort him."
I feel endlessly miserable inside.
He knew Zachary loved toy trucks.
But Zachary never got his favorite toy until he died.
Ethan left us so many times to spend time with Kayla, and Zachary always asked me in grievance, "Mommy, did I make a mistake and upset Daddy? Why doesn't Daddy come to see us?"
On the night Maria passed away in the hospital, I held Zachary in my arms and cried so hard that I couldn't breathe as I watched Maria leave this world.
At that time, I called Ethan, but he just said indifferently, "I'm busy."
He had no time to help with Maria's funeral, so I was left to deal with everything on my own.
I was not available for Zachary, so I could just ask the nanny to take care of him at home.
Unexpectedly, a few days later, Zachary had a high fever after not being covered at night.
By the time the nanny called me anxiously, I was at the crematorium arranging Maria's funeral and couldn't leave, so I had to call Ethan for help.
However, not long after losing Maria, I lost Zachary.
As Zachary's biological father, Ethan said such unashamed words while Zachary had just passed away.
I was so agitated that I slapped Ethan hard across the face.
"Fuck off! You don't deserve to mention Zachary!
"Get out of here, both of you!"
Ethan didn't expect me to get so agitated, and the guilt disappeared from his face, filling it with indifference.
"Julie, I'm warning you not to go too far."
Just then, Kayla came up from behind him, pretending to be understanding and comforting me.
"Julie, don't blame Ethan. It was my birthday that night, and I felt so lonely. Ethan was worried about me, so he came to stay with me."
With that, she looked up and smiled at me, her eyes filled with provocation and ostentation.
I knew she was trying to provoke me on purpose.
If it was before, she might have gotten her way.
I would have gone crazy with jealousy, pounced on her, pulled her hair, and kicked the bitch out of my house.
But right now, I just felt tired.
I sneered, "You're such a bitch. There's no one to be there for you, so you let my husband stay with you."
Kayla looked instantly embarrassed.
Ethan frowned tightly, "Julie, what are you being sarcastic about for such a trivial thing?"
I ignored him and turned to stride away.
I still had a lot of work to do. It was getting awfully hot, and if Zachary's body wasn't cremated, it would smell stinky, and I hadn't even bought him a suit yet.
Seeing my determination to leave, Ethan was stunned.
Over the years of my marriage, I had always been gentle and understanding around him, and I was especially considerate to him in front of others.
But now that I had lost the most important person in my life, I didn't want to play the role of a wonderful wife to him, and I didn't want him anymore.
"Julie."
I disappeared out the door, and Ethan suddenly came after me.
He called me from behind, "I just saw your message two days ago. Tomorrow afternoon...... no, I'm going to the hospital this afternoon to see Zachary and apologize to him. From now on, you're never going to say anything like divorce as a joke again, okay?"
He thought the message I sent him back then was a joke.
I sneered.
As long as he remembered to reply to me with a message, he would realize that he had been blacklisted and deleted by me a long time ago.
No wonder he hadn't replied to me these days, and he just took it as if I was angry.
I said coldly, "Ethan, I don't have time to joke with you.
"Find a time to go to the Courthouse as soon as possible to file for divorce.
"When the time comes, I will never interfere with you again, no matter who you want to hang out with."
I left with determination.
Ethan frowned tightly and helplessly took out his cell phone to call his assistant, Mark.
"Mark, get me a toy truck for Zachary and take it to the hospital this afternoon. Tell Zachary to convince his mom to stop being angry."
Chapter 3
I was at the children's clothing store that afternoon when I selected a blue suit.
Taking a suit in Zachary's usual size, I didn't hold back the tears.
It had been three days, and I still felt like it was a dream.
Zachary just left me like that.
I was just about to take the suit to the checkout when someone suddenly grabbed it out of my hand.
"Ethan, look, would Zach like it?"
I jerked my head up at the sound of Zach's name.
Kayla was smiling with her head cocked while Ethan stood across from her with a worried look on his face.
He looked at me quickly. "Julie, I have told you that I will visit Zachary at the hospital this afternoon, but why are you following us?"
My eyes instantly filled with disappointment.
Just now, I thought Ethan already knew about Zachary, so I...
But Kayla smiled and grabbed the suit out of my hand. "Julie, I don't blame you for stalking Ethan and I. My puppy Zach died, and Ethan was worried about me being heartbroken, so he accompanied me to buy a suit for my dog. Just give me this suit, please."
I stared at Kayla incredulously, thinking, "Why does she have a dog with the same name as Zachary?"
"Don't even think about it!"
I yanked that suit back like crazy.
That suit is in Zachary's favorite color. I asked the owner, and he said it was the only one in the store.
Zachary had already passed away. I didn't help him get what he wanted when he was alive, so I made sure to help him keep the suit he loved when he died.
Kayla seemed to be purposely trying to go against me, so she grabbed the suit tightly and wouldn't let go.
She looked over at Ethan miserably. "Ethan, it's Zach's suit."
"Julie! What are you doing here? Aren't you ashamed?"
Seeing that I was crazy, Ethan snarled at me, grabbed the suit out of my hand, and shoved me harshly.
"Kayla's upset about losing her favorite pet dog. You don't need a suit, so what's the point of taking it from her?"
I cried uncontrollably and couldn't hold back my rage at him any longer.
"Ethan!
"My son was killed by both of you, and I will never forgive you!"
Ethan was slightly stunned. After a moment, he sneered and taunted me, "Julie, you will say anything to pretend to be pathetic.
"Zachary's lying in the hospital, but why did you curse him?
"Women like you don't deserve to be a mother. If you continue to act like this, I'm going to take Zachary away, and you'll never see him again!"
I crouched down in despair, with tears all over my face.
I couldn't see Zachary anymore.
I glared at Ethan and Kayla, who had no conscience.
They obviously knew it was Zachary's name, and Kayla had to name her pet dog the same.
I hated them so much!
I hoped that the lightning would strike these two ruthless people dead.
Ethan had already snatched the suit out of my hand and handed it to Kayla, who was sobbing.
Before I could grab it back, I got a call from the crematorium.
"Ms. Davis, someone has taken your son Zachary's place, and it is your husband. He asked us to give up the place to a dog to be cremated first."
His words instantly made me jump up from the floor. I wiped away my tears and slapped fiercely towards Ethan.
"You're an animal!"
I would have to stand in line at the crematorium for a long time to get a place.
It was so hot right now, and I didn't want Zachary to leave smelling like something he didn't like.
He was clearly a kid who liked to keep neat and tidy.
He was so eager to be liked by his father, but not only was he left to die on the road by his father, but he was not even given a place in the crematorium after his death.
"You're an animal, and you're not a human being!
"You got Zachary killed, but you're also going to take away Zachary's cremation place for a bitch's dog."
I cried so hard that I couldn't catch my breath.
I even spat out a mouthful of blood suddenly.
Ethan had been sneering when he suddenly froze. He looked at the blood I spat out in shock and was filled with panic.
