Chapter 1

My entire family had suddenly fallen critically ill, their lives hanging by a thread.

The doctor said it was due to poisoning, and the only antidote was a newly developed drug by Griffin Pharmaceuticals, incredibly difficult to get.

Upon hearing this, I finally let out a sigh of relief.

After all, my fiancé, Noah Griffin, was the CEO of Griffin Pharmaceuticals.

It seemed like fate had dealt me a favorable hand.

But I never expected, while waiting for the life-saving drug, that Noah would fail me at the last moment.

Red-eyed and exhausted, I knelt by the ICU door, frantically calling Noah over and over again.

“Noah’s with me. Do you need something?”

The voice on the other end wasn’t Noah – it was Alice, his childhood friend. “Oh, sorry, Josie, my dog has acute gastroenteritis, and Noah’s helping me with that right now.”

I gritted my teeth and tried to stay calm. “But didn’t he promise to bring the medicine for my parents? Where’s the drug?”

Noah’s voice suddenly came through in the background.

“It’s just some medicine, right? Why are you so worked up? Can’t you see I’m busy? I’ll have my assistant bring it over later.”

But it was too late.

That night, I lost the last of my family.

——

The hospital hallway reeked of antiseptic.

I knelt in front of the doctor, begging him to save my adoptive parents’ lives.

The doctor frowned, a pained look in his eyes.

“Please, don’t do this. It’s not that we don’t want to help, but without the right medication, there’s nothing more we can do.”

I broke down, sobbing.

I knew the doctor was right.

Today was supposed to be a day of celebration, marking my parents’ wedding anniversary. They had spent their entire lives being frugal, and now that my career was stable, and I was engaged, it was time for them to enjoy life.

But I never expected that just two hours after returning from dinner at the hotel, my parents would collapse, vomiting blood and slipping into unconsciousness.

I tried calling my fiancé, Noah Griffin, but he didn’t answer, so I quickly dialed 911 and rushed my parents to the hospital.

When we arrived, I learned it wasn’t just some sudden illness – they had been poisoned.

The only potential cure was a newly developed drug from Noah’s pharmaceutical company. Nothing else would work.

I was spared only because I hadn’t eaten the last dish served, the chocolate mousse, due to my picky eating habits.

After begging the hospital staff, they placed my parents on the best life-support machines available. I sat vigil outside the ICU, dialing Noah’s number repeatedly.

On the way to the hospital, Noah had promised he’d bring the medicine as quickly as possible.

But now, hours had passed beyond the expected time, and I hadn’t even caught a glimpse of the drug.

Worse yet, Noah had seemingly vanished.

Dozens of calls later, he finally picked up.

But it wasn’t him who answered – it was Alice Lipton.

“Oh, you mean Noah? My dog got really sick out of nowhere, so he’s helping me nurse it back to health.”

I knew who she was.

Alice, Noah’s childhood friend.

“Josie, just be patient. Your family’s already so sick, what difference does a couple more minutes make?

“And besides, Noah has to take care of me too. I’m feeling pretty down, and he promised to make me some late-night snacks to cheer me up.”

A heavy weight pressed down on my chest, making it hard to breathe.

Clenching my teeth, I spat out my words slowly, “Didn’t he say he’d bring the medicine right away? Where is it?”

I could taste blood in my mouth as I finished speaking.

A moment of silence passed before Noah’s voice came through.

“It’s just some medicine, right? Why are you so worked up? Can’t you see I’m busy? I’ll have my assistant bring it over later.”

“Noah…” I choked on my words, desperation coating my voice. “My parents’ lives are on the line. Please, hurry.”

“Yeah, yeah, I got it. You’re driving me crazy.”

Then he hung up.

Half an hour later, the doctor approached, looking worried.

“Has the medicine arrived yet?” he asked urgently.

I was frantic with worry.

I tried calling Noah again.

This time, he answered with fury.

“What is your problem? Alice’s dog is seriously ill, and it could die any moment. Why do you keep calling me? I’m warning you, if anything happens to her dog, you’ll regret it!”

I sobbed, “Noah, my parents’ medicine…”

“Shut up!” Noah roared and slammed down the phone.

I was left utterly shattered, collapsing on the hospital floor, sobbing uncontrollably.

Chapter 2

Even though I was utterly disappointed in my fiancé, I had no choice but to lower my head and rush out of the hospital to find Noah and get the medicine.

That night, the rain poured harder than ever.

I ran into the downpour, the rain quickly blurring my vision.

Taxis were scarce on the road, so I had no choice but to stumble my way to Alice’s house, falling multiple times along the way.

By the time I reached Noah, I was on the verge of collapsing.

Panting heavily, like a desperate dog begging for help, I pleaded with him.

“Noah… the medicine… please… They’re the last family I have left in this world. I’m begging you…”

For a brief moment, I thought I saw a flash of disgust in Noah’s eyes.

I let out a self-mocking laugh.

“Noah, as long as my parents survive, I’ll owe you for the rest of my life. I’ll do anything to repay you.”

Perhaps my pitiful state was enough to move him; Noah didn’t say anything more to insult me. Instead, he called his assistant to arrange for the medicine to be delivered.

At that moment, I heard Alice sobbing dramatically from behind him.

“Noah! What are we going to do? Sparky’s not moving! Is he dying? Sparky, wake up! Mommy can’t bear to lose you!”

Noah immediately turned around and rushed to her side, pulling her close and whispering comforting words.

“It’s okay, it’s okay. I’ll take him to the vet right now. He’s such a sweet dog, he’ll be fine. Don’t worry.”

“But Noah… it’s pouring outside, and your car’s still in the garage… how will we get there?”

Alice was sobbing hysterically, but in that moment, I could have sworn I caught her giving me a fleeting glance – full of venom.

Wait… was she…?

“No! The assistant has to deliver the medicine to my parents first!”

I suddenly snapped back to reality and rushed toward the door.

But before I could move, a strong hand grabbed the back of my clothes, pulling me back.

“Sparky is critically ill! He’s about to die! Can’t you hear? Can’t you see what’s happening?” Noah’s voice was ice cold. “We’re taking Sparky to the pet hospital first!”

His words hit me like a lightning strike, shattering my world.

I lunged at him, grabbing his collar in desperation.

“Noah Griffin, are you even human? My parents are dying in the hospital, and you want to save a dog?!”

SLAP!

The sound of the slap echoed through the room.

The force of it left me dazed, my vision going black as I nearly crumpled to the ground.

“Listen to the nonsense coming out of your mouth!”

Noah’s voice was icy and distant. “Your parents’ lives matter, but a dog’s life doesn’t?”

Clutching my stinging cheek, I stared at the man in front of me, someone who now felt like a complete stranger. I couldn’t find the words to respond.

That stormy night, Noah drove off with Alice and her dog, disappearing into the darkness.

I was left standing there, clutching the box of medicine, before running back into the rain.

I didn’t remember how long I ran. All I remembered was being completely drenched.

By the time I handed the medicine to the doctor at the hospital, I collapsed, passing out.

When I woke up, I was lying on a pristine white hospital bed.

An IV drip was attached to my hand, the medicine slowly dripping into my veins.

I immediately sat up.

“My parents – did they use the medicine? Are they getting better?”

The nurses in the room fell silent.

They exchanged glances but didn’t say a word.

A terrible feeling started to sink into my heart.

I pulled the IV needle out of my hand and got out of bed.

“Miss Davis, please calm down. They’re gone… You need to take care of yourself now,” one of the nurses said, rushing over to hold me.

“You were out in the rain for so long – you’ve still got a fever!”

My chest tightened, and the tears came pouring out uncontrollably.

Chapter 3

I could still vaguely remember the day when I was four years old, and my parents came to the orphanage to take me home.

Yes, I’d been abandoned since birth.

It was my adoptive parents who gave me a second chance at life, who gave me a real home.

Back then, we were so poor. They went hungry so that I could eat well and have decent clothes to wear.

They told me they couldn’t have children of their own, and that since they had adopted me, I was their only daughter.

Later, they supported me through school, all the way to college.

During those years, Japanese cuisine had become quite the trend, and I remember craving it. So they bit the bullet and bought me sushi and ramen while they ate nothing but plain bread for days.

I remembered it all – I remembered every bit.

I promised myself that I’d study hard, and one day, I’d take care of them and give them a good life.

But things didn’t go as planned.

I hadn’t even gotten the chance… and they were gone.

Those bittersweet yet happy days, they’re gone forever. And now, I have no family left.

In the cold, sterile mortuary, I collapsed over their lifeless bodies, unable to cry anymore.

It was my fault they died.

If I hadn’t insisted on being with Noah… If I hadn’t stubbornly fought against Alice… Maybe…

The doctors told me that by the time the medicine arrived, it was already too late.

If it had come just thirty minutes earlier, they might have been saved.

But there’s no “what if” in this world.

“Dad, Mom… I’m so sorry… I failed you…”

I muttered under my breath, feeling as though a part of my soul had left me. My life felt completely directionless.

I couldn’t forgive Noah, but even more so, I couldn’t forgive myself.

I was sick with fever for three straight days, during which I drifted in and out of delirium.

At one point, I even thought I saw Noah in a dream, but it was only for a brief moment.

Three days later, I held a small, simple funeral for my adoptive parents.

I brought their ashes back to the home I shared with Noah, planning to bury them in a cemetery after our inevitable breakup.

After I had chosen the burial plot and returned home, I was shocked to find Alice sitting alone on my couch.

And the two urns I had left on the table were nowhere to be seen.

“What are you doing here?”

Alice let out a cold laugh and slowly stood up.

“This is Noah’s house. Why shouldn’t I be here?”

“This is my home. Our marital home. Get out!”

I practically screamed at her, my voice raw with anger.

Alice stepped closer and leaned down to whisper into my ear, her words dripping with venom: “I’ll leave, but first, I should tell you something.”

“I threw out those cheap urns. Leaving them in Noah’s house was just bad luck. And by the way, your precious fiancé has been staying by my dog’s side at the animal hospital for the last three days. Oh, aren’t you lucky, getting to marry such a kind, patient man like my dear Noah. You’re so fortunate.”

A surge of rage shot through me like fire.

I grabbed Alice by her collar and threw her to the ground.

Then, I sat on top of her and slapped her across the face, over and over, at least ten times.

But even then, it wasn’t enough.

If the law allowed it, I would’ve killed her right then and there.

Just then, the sound of the door unlocking echoed through the room.

Noah had come home.

As soon as he walked in, Alice scrambled up from the floor, clutching her reddened face as she whimpered and whined:

“Noah, she hit me! She pinned me down and attacked me!

“Noah, how could you marry such a violent woman? Look at my face, it’s ruined… I’m going to the police! I want an injury report, I’m going to send her to jail!”

At that moment, I couldn’t think clearly anymore.

My mind went blank, consumed by the thought of getting revenge for my parents.

I lunged toward her again, but Noah kicked me to the floor before I could get close.

“You’ve lost it, Josie. You’ve never been able to get along with Alice, and I’ve let that slide. But now, you’re acting like a crazy woman, fighting and hitting people. I can’t just ignore that.

“I’m taking Alice to the hospital right now. If she’s fine, then we’ll let it go. But if you really hurt her, I will call the police. You need to learn that actions have consequences.”
