Chapter 1
Six years of marriage, two years of IVF, still no result.
To help improve my health, my husband hired a home nutritionist to design personalized meals tailored to my needs.
Three months later, the IVF finally succeeded.
Before I could even tell him, he sent a huge $800 cash gift in the family group chat, announcing he was going to be a dad.
Then I saw the nutritionist’s social media story post: a screenshot of the $800 transfer.
The caption read: “After three months of effort, I finally helped him achieve his wish to be a father~” My fingers hovered over the screen, and I ultimately didn’t tell him I was pregnant.
——
That evening, when Ethan Graham came home, his smile hadn’t faded.
Seeing my swollen eyes, he paused, then walked toward me expressionlessly.
“Ethan, congratulations on becoming a father. Let’s get a divorce!”
Ethan froze, then hurriedly explained,
“Hannah, did you misunderstand what I meant in the group chat?”
“I meant being a godfather? Sabrina is pregnant, and she asked me to be the child’s godfather… You know, there’s a folk custom of adopting children to attract fertility. If we become godparents, maybe we can conceive our own baby.”
Ethan rambled on, completely forgetting his MBA from the US. To hide the truth, he even believed in a folk custom.
I couldn’t stop a mocking laugh, tears streaming down my face.
“Ethan, when did even your words become a performance?”
“Is it about letting your white moonlight pretend to be a nutritionist, moving into our home to have an affair with you?”
As I spoke, I raised Sabrina Snow’s Social Media Story to his face, calmly handing him the USB drive.
Ethan’s face shifted instantly, followed by guilt.
“Hannah, I can explain. It’s not what you think…”
I looked at him quietly, finally speaking with grief and anger,
“Ethan, you and your first love slept in my bed! What do you think I meant?”
I had wanted a peaceful breakup. After ten years together, his vows of forever still echoed in my mind. I couldn’t stop the flood of sadness and rage.
Especially imagining that big bed I chose myself, where he held Sabrina, whispering the same sweet promises he once told me, I felt sick.
His lips kissed two people, saying identical words—how could he stay so calm?
I stared at Ethan, suppressing a tremor, and slowly spoke four words:
“I’m pregnant!”
Ethan rushed forward to hug me, but I clenched my teeth and slapped him hard.
“Ethan, you don’t deserve to be this child’s father. Let’s get a divorce.”
I couldn’t stop shaking, my voice trembling with emotion.
“That Sabrina, you got drunk for three days over her, even ending up with a stomach hemorrhage, and she still abandoned you and fled abroad.”
“Now she’s back, so you can’t wait to rekindle everything—movies with her, doctor visits with her, then having her child, making me watch the three of you act sweet right in front of me like I’m a fool.”
“I didn’t mean to lie to you!”
Ethan rushed over and knelt with a heavy thud, slapping himself repeatedly.
“Hannah, I can explain. Don’t be upset, it’s bad for the baby.”
“I just drank too much. That day, you went to the hospital, and she came in. I thought, I thought…”
I let out a bitter laugh.
That day, while I endured the agony of egg retrieval at the hospital—bleeding and confined to bed—he was passionately trying to conceive with his first love.
Chapter 2
I forced back my tears and said with sorrow,
“I don’t want this child. I’ll fulfill your wish.” Ethan’s pupils widened sharply, staring at me in shock. Then, he glanced at the fruit knife on the coffee table, grabbed it, and plunged it into his arm with a dull thud.
“Hannah, let me make it up to you, okay?”
“Keep the child. I don’t want a divorce.”
Before I could respond, a slim figure rushed over, clutching his wound.
“Ethan, how could you be so reckless!”
She yanked my hair and violently shoved me aside.
“Hannah Sterling, you’re so heartless. No wonder you can’t have children.”
With a crash, I slammed onto the coffee table, pain shooting through my spine like it was snapping.
Sabrina, pulled by momentum, stumbled and fell into Ethan.
As she frowned and held her stomach, Ethan panicked, sweeping her into his arms.
“Sabrina, where does it hurt? I’ll take you to the hospital right now.”
With that, he bolted toward the door, turning back anxiously once he stepped outside.
“Hannah, it’s not what you think. Stay calm, I’ll explain everything later.”
I tried to call after him, but a sharp pain seized my abdomen, and warm fluid streamed down my thighs.
Actually…
I really wanted this child. I said it only in anger; I never intended to give him up.
But he got upset, and he is leaving me.
Tears fell uncontrollably.
Through my blurred vision, Ethan carried Sabrina away, not once looking back at me.
The security guard at the entrance heard the noise and rushed in. Seeing me lying in a pool of blood, he immediately called 120 in fright.
I lay in the cold operating room, listening to the nurses gossip nearby.
“Mr. Graham treats his wife so well. She only sprained her ankle, and he insisted the hospital director check on her. Mother and child are both safe. They even handed out big Cash gifts, saying it was for the baby’s protection.”
“Sigh, too bad I wasn’t there. I’m here helping the chief doctor with the abortion. I should’ve hurried to tend to Mrs. Lane, too.”
One nurse pouted at me as she spoke.
I shut my eyes, feeling my child quietly slipping away from my body, tears falling endlessly.
When the doctor pushed me out of the operating room, Ethan arrived.
Our parents came with him.
The moment my mother-in-law saw me, she exploded in fury.
“You can’t even watch where you’re going while pregnant! An adult tripping on her own feet—what are you even capable of?”
“Do you know how many times I’ve prayed to the gods and Buddhas for Ethan to have a son soon? Otherwise, everything in the family will go to that little tramp.”
Ethan wasn’t an only child; he had a younger brother born outside marriage. My father-in-law declared that whoever bore the Graham family’s eldest grandson first would receive 20% of the shares.
My stepmother glanced at me with disdain before smiling obsequiously at my mother-in-law.
“My dear in-law, this child has always been stubborn. Don’t be angry. Mr. Sterling and I will make sure she’s disciplined.”
My father glared at me, too. After all, if I’d carried the Graham family’s eldest grandson, he could act superior when dealing with the Graham family.
But I was worthless; I’d lost that precious grandson.
Everyone stared at me, some satisfied, some disappointed, but no one asked why I miscarried, and no one even asked if I was in pain.
My face was ghostly pale as I listened to their scolding and insults, calling me useless.
Ethan finally couldn’t take it anymore. Breaking his silence, he roared.
Chapter 3
“Stop talking, it’s all my fault.”
He walked over, grabbed my hand, and pressed it to his face, his eyes turning red.
“I’m sorry, wife. I thought you were only a week along and had just fallen. I saw Sabrina looking so pale, so I thought I’d drop her off and then come back to take you to the hospital.”
He suddenly lifted my hand and slapped himself with it.
“Wife, I’ll apologize for Sabrina. Hit me, hit me harder.”
He said urgently,
“Sabrina was just worried about me and accidentally pushed you. You pushed her too. Let’s just let it go, alright?”
Just as I was about to pull away and question him, Sabrina walked in, holding her back, and screamed at me,
“Ethan, are you even a man? Your wife stabbed you with a knife, and you still kneel down and apologize to her!” “What?!”
“It’s just getting drunk and fooling around. She was probably nowhere near where we slept together before. If she’s that capable, why didn’t you sleep with her first back then?” She jutted out her stomach arrogantly,
“We slept together, and I’m carrying the Graham family’s eldest grandson. You want to divorce, right? You'd better think twice!”
“You’ll divorce once it’s over, and I’ll marry Ethan with our son. Then you’ll be the shameless mistress.” Hearing Sabrina’s filthy words, the smothered agony, and Ethan’s coldness, my fury finally erupted. I grabbed a teacup from the bedside table and smashed it against her shoulder.
“Sabrina, you’re a slut, born to be a mistress. You got dumped by a man, and now you’ve crawled back to cling to your old flame.” Sabrina shrieked, clutching her forehead. Blood seeped slowly between her fingers. Ethan immediately let go of me and rushed to pull her into his arms.
After glaring at me for ten seconds, she shook him off and screamed,
“Hannah, you fool! You can’t even keep your own husband, and you dare to hit me! I’ll never forgive you!”
She lunged at me.
Everyone hurried over to restrain her. Sabrina’s eyes were bloodshot as she glared at me, yelling at Ethan,
“Ethan, she called me a slut and hit me! You must avenge me, or I’ll abort the baby and never see you again!”
“Slap!” A sharp crack rang across the hospital room.
I held my face, staring at Ethan in disbelief. The ward fell silent, broken only by my anguished scream:
“Ethan, I want a divorce! A divorce!”
Ethan’s hand trembled as he slowly reached for my face, his voice shaking with panic.
“Hannah, stop it. Sabrina is pregnant.”
“You may not be able to have any more children, but this is still your child.”
Sabrina calmed down, smoothing her messy hair, looking at me with arrogance.
“If you want my son, you’d better behave from now on, or I’ll not only make Ethan hit you, I’ll get you thrown out of the Graham family instantly.”
With that, she strutted out of the ward, chin raised. A coy voice drifted from the hallway:
“Ouch, my stomach!”
Ethan immediately stiffened and rushed after her.
As she left, she shot me a nervous glance.
“Hannah, rest well. I’ve taken Sabrina to the doctor. I’ll be back soon.”
Watching her disappear, I covered my burning cheek and laughed coldly.
Back then, she was the campus beauty, with suitors lining the road to the south of the city, including Ethan.
At that time, I was disliked at home and constantly mocked and bullied by wealthy classmates at school.
It was Ethan, the class monitor, who angrily scolded the boy who humiliated me, publicly declaring to the class that I was his sister and that he would protect me from then on.
