Chapter 1 of After Rebirth, I Gave Up Saving My Sister with Leukemia

In the dilapidated self-built house, my mother, whom I hadn't seen for several years, told me: "Your sister's condition has worsened. Go with us to the hospital now for a check. If your marrow's a match, you can have surgery immediately."

Beside her, my dad said impatiently, "Hurry up. She won't live through the year otherwise."

In my previous life, I listened to my parents, went to the hospital for the check and donated my bone marrow to my sister. But later, to cut corners on expenses, they let my sister stay in the VIP ward, while I was discharged early and moved into the stairwell.

Due to long-term lack of care, infection and malnutrition, my condition worsened, and I eventually died alone in the stairwell.

1

After my rebirth, I was back at the day my parents came to the countryside to take me to the hospital for the marrow check.

Grandma and I had just sat down at the table when my parents barged in. "Your sister is dying, how can you still have the stomach to eat?"

In my past life, I was so happy to see my parents I tried my best to please them. After all, the last time we met was five years ago, when Grandma fell and they came back to visit.

Dying once made me understand something: No matter what you do, people who don't love you, still don't love you. I accepted the fact that I was the unloved child.

Grandma asked tremblingly, "What happened?"

My mom, Holly, looked anxious. "Elaine's condition has worsened, and she needs a bone marrow transplant. Neither of ours was a match, so all hope's on Charlotte now. If hers match, the surgery can be performed immediately."

Grandma frowned. "Didn't you say the umbilical cord blood cured it? What's wrong again?"

My dad interrupted her, "Mom, stop asking questions. You won't understand anyway. Charlotte can just go with us."

He then turned around and yelled at me, "What are you waiting for? Hurry up! Any more waiting, and your sister won't live through the year."

Now reborn, I knew too well that even if my marrow was a match, my sister, who I had only met a few times, would not be able to undergo surgery immediately.

So I came with them to the hospital for the test, to give them hope. To pave the way to their later despair.

2

I followed my parents to the hospital to have my marrow checked. The result came back as in my previous life, a match.

Still, bad news kept coming.

Elaine's broken arm did not heal properly, the wound became infected, and her immunity was low, so an immediate bone marrow transplant was off the table. She had to wait until the wound on her arm healed before the surgery could be performed.

My dear sister was on a college graduation trip and was competing in rock climbing with her classmates. She slipped and fell off a cliff. Fortunately, she hadn't climbed very high and there was a crooked tree below that cushioned her fall, so she didn't die.

But her arms and legs were shattered, and she had to undergo several operations to preserve her life.

Just when my parents started to be relieved, Elaine's leukemia relapsed. It was then that they thought of me and asked me to test for a marrow transplant.

So I became my sister's walking marrow bag and was taken by my father to the small villa where they lived, ready for surgery at any time.

Just like in my past life, they kept me sleeping in their stairwell, despite several empty rooms in the house.

In my past life, I lived in this stairwell for a month before being hospitalized for surgery. After the surgery, my parents had me discharged early to save money. I returned to, and finally died in this small stairwell.

I was not going to live in this stairwell this time.

"Dad, this place is a little small, isn't it?"

Dad looked unhappy. "Stop complaining, you can sleep fine here."

I replied, frowning, "But this place is small, dark, and damp. What if I get sick and it affects the surgery later?"

"Elaine's surgery can't be delayed any longer."

His eyes were filled with resentment, like he was losing his temper. "Which room do you want to stay in?"

I pointed to Elaine's room and said, "The one upstairs!"

"Good location, good lighting and ventilation."

3

Dad yelled, "What is it you want? Don't you know that's your sister's room?"

I blinked innocently. "So that's Elaine's room?"

If I hadn't been reborn, I might never have known what kind of life my sister led since she was a child.

In my past life, my sister said something on the operating table that turned me into a resentful spirit after my death. I returned to the hospital and saw how well my parents took care of her.

Only the best and most expensive of foods and equipment, and she stayed in a VIP room, a stark contrast to me, who was dying in the stairwell.

I saw how I, since being a newborn, was treated as my sister's blood bag by my parents.

When I was less than a year old, Elaine needed a blood transfusion due to post-surgery adverse reactions. Like her, I have Rh- blood, so my parents hurriedly brought me back from Grandma in the countryside to provide blood for her.

The baby me was drained of 300 ml of blood and left alone in the ward. The nurse couldn't bear to see it and fed me a bottle of milk.

I returned to Grandma's house the next day.

Grandma looked at the dying baby in her arms and shook her head. After that, she fed me nutritious stew every day. Only then did I come back to life.

From that day on, as Elaine's blood bag, I had to be on call at all times. Whenever something happened to Elaine, my parents would come to demand me to give her a blood transfusion.

Old as she was, Grandma couldn't say anything in front of my parents. She only sighed and said she had a devil for a son.

Grandma was the person who truly loved me. After learning of my death, she went to my father's house to seek justice for me, but was accidentally pushed down the stairs by Elaine and died on the spot.

There I was, a spirit floating in the air, watching the three beasts cover up the truth of my grandmother's death, my jaw aching from clenching. I swore then that if I were granted a second chance at life, I would make them pay.

Then I was reborn.

My father's expression changed upon hearing my words. Who would have thought, that the younger daughter of the family was a complete stranger her own home.

The truth is, as their daughter of more than ten years, I had only stepped into this villa twice. The first time was when I was 5 years old and Elaine needed a blood transfusion in the middle of the night, and my mother just brought me here. The second time was now.

"You can move your stuff to the guest room next door."

I asked, "Oh, don't we have a housekeeper?"

Dad couldn't help but get angry. "She's cooking for your sister. Do you think everyone is as selfish as you? You are an ungrateful brat."

I acted mad. "Oh, then I'd better leave! I can't get used to living here."

My father cursed at me and asked the housekeeper to clean up the guest room, and I moved in.

One morning, I was awakened by a phone call while I was still asleep. "Elaine needs a blood transfusion, come quickly."

I was in a daze and didn't respond. I hung up the phone, turned over and went back to sleep.

Two minutes later, Holly called, "Charlotte, you ungrateful brat, lying in bed with what's going on with your sister?"

"Yeah." I replied then hung up the phone, turned on silent mode, and went back to sleep.

If Elaine had not pushed my grandmother down the stairs and said what she said on the operating table in my past life, I might have saved her life.

Too bad, there were no ifs.

Ten minutes later, I was pulled out of bed.

Holly yelled in frustration, "What are you doing? Why did we raise you this big? Your sister is waiting for you to save her life in the hospital, and here you are sleeping!"

I lazily got up from the bed. "Don't worry, she'll live."

My father finally couldn't stand my attitude. "What was that? Elaine's suffering in the hospital, and you are sleeping here. Don't you feel bad at all?"

"Why should I?"

"She is your biological sister, don't you feel sorry for her? You are such an ungrateful brat!"

I laughed and said, "Haha, did you raise me at all? You just gave birth to me."

My father lost it and slapped me. "Pack up and go to the hospital now, stop making a scene. After the operation, you can go back where you came from. You're no daughter of us!"

5

In the end, I followed my parents to the hospital, just to see how my so-called sister was doing.

In the room lied bald girl with a pale face and an oxygen tube inserted. She was all bones under her hospital gown. I was deceived by this sight in my previous life. I was so heartbroken that tears were streaming down my face.

Elaine saw me, smiled and said weakly, "Charlotte, you're finally here."

I pretended to be surprised. "Elaine, how did you get so thin?"

Before Elaine could reply, the mother next to her started to scold me, "What are you doing here? Go to the nurse's station. The nurse is waiting for you to draw blood."

"Mom, don't blame Charlotte. It's been a few years since we last met, she just wants to catch up. I'm doing fine."

Holly changed her expression and said gently, "Elaine baby, don't speak for her, you will feel better after the blood transfusion."

I wanted to laugh at their back and forth.

My father came over and dragged me to the nurse's station. "She's here, get the blood."

Then he turned and walked back into the room.

I lied to the nurse, saying I wanted to go to the bathroom, and fled from the hospital.

Ten minutes later, Holly called me on the phone, roaring from the other end, "You beast, where have you been? You have 10 minutes to get back here."

I put the phone far away. "I'll be right back."

Then I hung up and turned the phone off.

Finally, some peace.

I went to the United Bank in the city center to withdraw money from the bank card I had "cheated" from my father Charles.

There were only two thousand in it. I gave one thousand to Grandma and kept one thousand for myself.

With my good grades in the college entrance exam, I found a few part-time tutoring jobs.

I packed my weekends full with tutoring sessions, so I could earn enough for college tuition when school starts in September.

But I couldn't afford to rent a house now, so I had to move back to the villa.

6

When I got back, Charles and Holly were sitting in the living room waiting for me.

Charles' face darkened as he tried to play the solemn head of the family. "Kneel down!"

Too bad, I didn't care.

Holly gnashed her teeth and rushed over to slap me. I quickly grabbed her hand and acted surprised. "What's wrong?"

"Don't you know, with what you did today? I asked you to go to the nurse station to draw blood, where the hell were you?"

"You know Elaine was waiting for you to save her, but you want her dead, don't you?"

Failing to hit me, she pinched my arm instead. I grabbed her hands with both hands and pushed her away, and she fell down on the sofa.

Holly didn't react for a moment and just stared at me blankly.

Fortunately, I had been working in the fields with my grandmother since I was a child and was a strong girl, or I would have suffered a beating.

"Didn't you find the blood? Isn't Elaine fine?"

The city's hospital didn't have any Rh- blood, so they asked for it from the provincial hospital.

Rh- blood is rare, so it must have cost a lot of money.

When Holly mentioned this, she started to curse like a mad woman: "You bitch, do you know how much money we wasted because of you?"
