Chapter 1
My husband's sister, Hanah, called the police because she ran out of toilet paper.
When they arrived, they contacted me.
I said nothing on her behalf and sent her to the police station because I had been reborn.
In my previous life, I endured immense suffering in this family, domestic violence from my husband, cold treatment from his parents, and ruthless exploitation from his sister.
After gently admonishing Hanah for misusing public resources at Christmas dinner, she retaliated by setting fire to my daughter's room.
My daughter, the only person in the world who cared about me, was burned to death, and I was also severely burned.
When I opened my eyes again, it was the day Hanah called the police.
When I received the call, I replied decisively, "Please put her in the detention center and educate her."
This time, I took my daughter and left that place of malice without hesitation.
——
I held the phone, listening to the voice in the microphone in a trance.
"Hello, is this Alivia? I am a police officer. Your family member, Hanah, called the police because she didn't bring toilet paper in the public toilet. This behavior is a serious waste of police resources. Can you come and help us deal with it?"
This conversation sounded so familiar. I seemed to have heard it once before.
Looking at my uninjured hands, I realized everything was starting over.
In my previous life, I was lying on a wooden board with severe burns all over my body. My husband Knox, who I had been married to for many years, gave up on treatment and, together with his family members, acted pitifully in front of the camera and used the livestream to make money.
After a few admonishments to Hanah, she set a fire that killed my daughter.
I rushed into the flames to save her, suffering severe burns, and then was left to die on a wooden plank. They used my pitiful look to livestream for sympathy and money.
My body was discarded only after neighbors complained of the stench.
I had been kind to them, yet this was my fate.
Reborn, I refused to handle Hanah's mess.
I couldn't stay in this home anymore.
"Police, her behavior is totally wrong. Please follow the rules and regulations and put her in the detention center."
After hanging up, I entered my daughter Lily's room and saw her quietly doing homework, tears streaming down my face.
After a brief cry, I wiped my tears and packed our bags, ready to leave this home that wasn't ours.
Just as we were about to leave, Knox burst in, furious.
"Alivia! You couldn't even care for Hanah. And now she's locked up in the police station. Did you do this on purpose?"
I quickly hid our luggage and my daughter in the closet and activated my phone's video function.
In the next moment, Knox's fist struck me, knocking me to the ground.
He kicked my stomach, yelling, "You bitch, the police said they called you. And you asked them to put Hanah in the detention center, right? You are really outrageous!"
I protected my head with my arms and turned towards the camera, screaming.
I knew arguing was futile. Anything I said would be twisted.
Knox's parents stood at the door and watched him abuse me, and even stoked the flames.
"Hanah is just a child. She wouldn't do anything wrong. How could the police put her in the detention center? It must be Alivia who said something to the police that harmed our Hanah."
"Knox, I think she is too ungrateful. She doesn't have to go out to work and just stays at home to take care of the children. She doesn't appreciate her good fortune and plays tricks on Hanah. You have to discipline her."
Knox's rage escalated as he grabbed my hair, preparing to smash my head on the floor.
Lily rushed out of the closet and grabbed Knox's arm, crying, "Dad! Don't hit Mom!"
Knox swung his arm and knocked Lily to the corner of the table, blood flowing from her wound.
"Lily!" I held her tightly, shielding her from further harm.
Eventually, Knox stopped, leaving us bruised while he went to dinner with his parents.
He warned, "I'll let you off this time, but you must come with me to the police station tomorrow to bring Hanah back. If you dare to do it again next time, I'll make you pay!"
There won't be a next time.
After this tragic death, I was no longer the timid person I was in my previous life.
I wouldn't let him do that next time.
After he left, I got up and blocked the door, then called the police, "My daughter and I are victims of domestic violence. Please help us!"
Chapter 2
Sirens sounded in the neighborhood.
Sensing something was wrong, Knox began to slam the door violently.
But I had blocked the door with a cabinet, so even though the three of them hammered the lock and chopped the door, they still couldn't open it.
As they persisted, neighbors complained, prompting the property manager to assist the police in opening the door.
Initially, the police thought it was a simple domestic dispute. Still, upon seeing the bruises on my daughter and me, as well as the damaged door, they decided to take Knox into custody.
Knox pushed and hit the policeman, swearing, "I just taught my wife a lesson. What right do you have to arrest me?"
After three warnings, he was handcuffed for assaulting an officer.
I grabbed my packed luggage and held Lily in my arms, preparing to go to the hospital.
At that moment, Paige grabbed my luggage bag, trying to stop me.
"Alivia, you are part of our family. Where do you think you're going?"
I deliberately let go of my hand, causing her to fall.
She landed on her back but was unharmed.
Zayden pointed at me, trembling with anger. "You called the police on Knox and attacked Paige! Is this how a daughter-in-law behaves? You're inhuman."
Inhuman? Who truly lacked humanity here?
In my previous life, I had always treated them well.
But I was not a good mother.
I foolishly believed Knox's sweet words and quit my job to focus on the family.
His parents had been brainwashing me, saying that I was worthless without a job. Enjoying a leisurely life at home and raising children was the blessing they had given me.
I nearly became Hanah's second mother, even being her guardian contact.
I helped Hanah, who was in her twenties and still getting into trouble, clean up all the messes, while neglecting my daughter.
When Hanah set the fire, Knox and his parents stood by and did nothing to help.
My daughter's cries echoed through the neighborhood, and the memory of her burned body haunts me.
Paige lay on the ground and pounded her fist, causing much noise and drawing a crowd.
She wailed, "Our Knox is so unlucky. He married this woman and has no son. We feed and clothe her, and this is how she repays us. Alivia, you won't end well for this evil."
Lily was scared to tears by Paige's wailing.
Seeing someone in the crowd picking up a camera to record a video, I had an idea and knelt before the local women's office's director, Alexa.
Alexa saw my action and took a step back, preparing to slip away, but I grabbed her trouser leg.
"Ms. Green, please help me and my daughter. Everyone in the neighborhood knows that I have been bullied by the Foster family for so many years and never complained.
"Today, Hanah called the police for running out of toilet paper in the public toilet and was put into the detention center. How could I have the right to order the police around?
"But they accuse me of playing tricks and use this as an excuse to beat us to death."
After hearing such explosive news, more people began recording.
Alexa, who ignored my cries for help from domestic violence countless times in my previous life, took on a righteous demeanor in front of the cameras.
"Paige, what are you doing on the ground? Everyone knows about your youngest daughter's behavior. How can you blame Alivia?"
Alexa was a well-known figure in the street. When Paige heard her speak, she trembled and got up from the ground.
Zayden, however, protested, "Alexa, she hasn't worked since marrying our son. We've taken care of her, and now she wants to leave after calling the police for a minor conflict?"
Hearing that I had called the police, people around me, especially the men, looked at me with disapproval.
Alexa looked hesitant and reached for my luggage bag, seemingly trying to persuade me to reconcile.
I dodged her hand and pulled open my sleeves and Lily's bangs, revealing the hideous scars on our bodies.
The people around gasped.
I rushed towards Alexa again, hugged her trouser legs, and prevented her from leaving. "You know that Knox abused me. You told me to tolerate him, but today Knox wants to beat Lily and me to death. If we don't leave now, we will die."
I was not lying. I had severed ties with them. If we stayed, our lives would be in grave danger.
I exposed Alexa's hypocrisy. Amid the sharp glances from the neighbors, her face darkened, and she seemed to want to get angry and clarify something.
Lily suddenly imitated me, kneeling and grabbing the other side of Alexa's pants. "Aunt Alexa. My dad always beats us! Please save us!"
Her innocence shifted everyone's gaze to Alexa, waiting for her response.
Alexa frowned and looked at me intently.
I was not afraid at all and looked back at her firmly.
Today, I had to get out.
Neighbors began to criticize Zayden, Paige, and Alexa.
Amid the rising tension, Alexa finally looked at Zayden and Paige and spoke.
